My Internship journey at Cathay

It has been almost more than two months now since my internship with Cathay Pacific at Pearson Airport. I have been learning a lot and still learning more such as security clearance, arrival and departure gate duties, boarding passengers, assigning them baggage tags, helping them with the security clearance, helping and guiding passengers for their needs and especially those who are travelling with kids and aged people. One specific thing that I and my fellow classmates learned was to know about different types of restrictions that were applied because of Covid-19 in all other countries where Cathay Pacific was travelling to which I believe was never there before us and hopefully will not be there after us.

Flight Class with Code

Do you know that airlines are using an alphabetic code to identify a fare type and also to identify rules applicable to that fare? yes, I came to know about this during my internship with Cathay Pacific. Cathay Pacific is using different classes of flight starting with different alphabets. Such as Economy (Y, B, H, K, M, L, V), Premium Economy (W, R) or Business (J, C, D, P, I). It was kind of a little confusing initially but still, I was able to remember it. These codes are really helpful when working and identifying passengers.

First thing I learned at Cathay

I started my internship with the intent to learn as much as I can and learn and learn and learn all the skills that I can benefit from in my future career.

Today, I will share what I learned very first at work. Obviously, all the orientation and going through all the procedures, documents and learning and observing everything are the most crucial aspect of work. But, talking about actual work in action very first thing I learned was 'how to print bag tags and crew tags'.

I printed tags for the baggage of customers, also tag them and the same goes for the crew members also. I enjoyed doing that and that kicks off my journey.

Something Special at work yesterday

Today, during my work shift when I was helping passengers, Communicating with them and working on providing them boarding passes. I felt very happy that now our life is slowly getting back to normal. Suddenly, the pictures from the last two years came in front of my eyes for a second. How bad it was, the whole world was locked down because of the Pandemic and the aviation industry in particular had a catastrophic impact.

And today, when I was working on a boarding pass for one family for their flight from YYZ. While I was handing over the family their boarding passes I was literally able to see the smile of relaxing and stepping out for vacation after a long period of time. Even they also communicated their feeling and excitement with me and I greeted them for the best vacation.

Unfortunately, I wanted to ask them for a picture but I did not :(

Day Out in Summer

During my study break time and while I was not having any of my work shift for two continuous days, I decided to take a break from my routine and go out to visit Niagara Falls and City - a place that has its own beauty.

Niagara Falls I visited my uncle who lives in Niagara Falls and there I went to see the falls. I believe, among all the best-known falls in the world, Niagara Falls is the best and most impressive. I feel that the beauty of Niagara Falls is difficult to explain in words. It is must visit place if you are visiting Canada or living in Canada. It is also connected with the U.S.A. by the rainbow bridge on Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is also surrounded by very beautiful views and places to visit.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Later in the day, er also visited the beautiful town of Niagara-on-the-Lake located in southern Ontario, just a few minutes of drive from Niagara Falls. This small beautiful city is on the shores of Lake Ontario and the Niagara river. It has spectacular views of nature especially the shore of the lake.

Just WOW WOW WOW!!!

Butterfly Conservatory A house of Butterfly. When I first heard the name at that time only I decided YES I am visiting this place. It is located on the way from Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake.

I am a nature-loving person and I love all kinds of animals, insects and birds. This beautiful place features over 2,000 colourful tropical butterflies just floating freely all around the museum and plantation they have made for them such as lush, exotic blossoms and greenery. We spend almost an hour inside the conservatory but it was worth it.

Lovely place you should visit if you are a nature lover. I was just got immersed in this nature’s beauty, away from the traffic and city.

DAD's Birthday Surprise

Today I want to share about my recent visit to my DAD for his birthday. Yes, he was so happy that I came to the USA to visit him on his birthday.

He was celebrating his birthday on July 20th, 2022 and I decided to pay him a surprise visit. I drove from Toronto, Canada to New Jersey, USA. It was nearly 8hrs of drive and I literally enjoyed it. Upstate New York was really undeniably beautiful. I must admit that upstate New York countryside is once in a lifetime to experience.

Now back to my main point. When I reached my home in Jersey City, as soon as I knocked on my door my mom opened the door for me and the first thing she said was I knew you are coming for his birthday.

Isn't it amazing that parents know what their kids can think!

Afterwards, on the day of the birthday, we had a cake cutting and also we invited a few friends and we had a barbecue. Towards the end of the day, My dad said to me that you really made it memorable for me. Thank You.

That gives a lifelong smile on his face and my face as well.

We have to love and respect our parents and we have to do our best to make them happy.

A Day to Cherish

May 20, 2022, a special day of my life.

I have been to the airport many times, and have taken flights many times but today was DIFFERENT for me.

Why so different? Because I stepped into the world of my dream career. My first placement with Cathay Pacific Canada at Pearson Airport, Toronto.

I was excited as well as thrilled that how it will go!

Man! I was not able to sleep till late at night the day before. I checked my uniform many times a day before and my shoes and my ID and my badge and myself in the mirror to gather all my self-confidence. I did prepare myself to look decent and professional. I did many exercises greeting people and recalling all that I have learnt from my professors.

I am really thankful to all my professors who have helped me a lot to nurture my skills and now it's my time to prove that in my work.

On that auspicious day, I woke up early, finished my routine early and got ready to start my day. I was relaxed and confident. I went to the airport, and I was warmly welcomed by Cathay Pacific. I also met my peers and fellow classmates, it was a really good time. We were given an orientation and the journey begins.

Journey to touch the sky and fly on high altitude with a dream to be a successful future flight attendant.

The Selection Day

Today, I want to talk a little about my selection process for an internship as a Customer Service Ambassador.

I know all of my teammates have already posted about their placement and the first day of work already in the beginning of their journey but I wanted to be a little different. I wanted to learn and explore and then bring it to you. So here I am today to share a little about my experience.

Well, I am a student of Flight Services – Operations & Cabin Management program at Seneca College in Toronto, Canada. In our last semester, we go through the process of interviewing to get placement with WESTJET and Cathay Pacific Canada at Toronto Airport as an intern.

Like my all other fellow classmates, I also prepared a lot to face the interview. In fact, I asked my mother to take my moke interview which was fun though. Finally, the big day came for the interview and I went through the interview process by Cathay Pacific and WESTJET.

After completing both the interviews, I was a little nervous. Yeah, you read it correctly after the interview. I know everyone gets nervous before the interview but I think I am a little different than others. In fact, I was not able to sleep a night after the interview was over. I was also curious to know what could be my final results.

On the very next day, when I was preparing my breakfast and to my complete surprise I got an email from WESTJET and also on the following day from Cathay Pacific, both mentioning that "I WAS SELECTED". It was a great pleasure and honour that I got an offer from both WESTJET and Cathay Pacific. Undoubtedly, It was really challenging for me to decide which offer I should accept.

Believe me, it took two whole days for me to decide. Indeed, It was very difficult to decide but I have to select one. Both airlines are outstanding in their own way. And finally, I accepted the offer from Cathay Pacific Canada.

Friends, this was my selection process and I was thrilled during the complete selection process.

Flight Attendant Life

The life of a Flight Attendant can be challenging but also fascinating. It is true that they will never know in which city or country they are going to travel in their next shift. However, In all these chaos flight attendants have to manage their work-life balance. As a full-time FSO student at Seneca college, I am going to share my views on the passionate life of a flight attendant. Manage routine It is most important that a flight attendant must have a proper routine. Such as strict time management before work and reaching the workplace, it is said that 'On time is late' and 'Before time is on time so a flight attendant should always have to reach their work site prior to the shift timings. Also, Airlines are so strict regarding uniform policies, Cabin crews always have to be in the proper and full uniform.

Being a flight attendant absolutely is a true adventure but many people also say that an airline job is one of the horrible professions. Is it really? In my opinion, I don't think so. I am still not in the aviation profession because I am a student but soon I will be flying on the same flight. I also have been discussing the life and profession of a flight attendant with my college professor(s) who have been working as a flight attendant for a long period of time. This job provides many perks like having more than fifteen days off in a month, flying first class for holidays, and also relocation benefits if required.

Surely the job of a flight attendant is not glamorous but completely opposite of that. The experience offered by aviation has no other comparison. I can’t imagine who, what, or where I would be if flying is not part of my life.

Change in Life

We all have dreams, and we should do our best to achieve them.

like all other I do have a dream and I am going to share my dream with you all today.

My name is Grayson Thomas. I am from a small city in India. Since my childhood, whenever I saw flight flying over our city, I always thought to make my career in the field of flight and aviation industry.

However, being a child from a small city it was hard for me to find out ways how I will be able to make my dream true. On the top of that, I was little shy kid who was hesitated to talk with strangers and less speaking person.

“The future has a way of arriving unannounced.” --George Will. This quote completely truly fits into the change of my life. My mother got a good job opportunity in the USA. My family moved to the USA and I came and stepped into a completely new world.

I started school in Big Apple city known as New York. I loved staying there and I completed my graduation there and then I moved to Canada to fulfil my dream to be a flight attendant. I started my journey as a student at Seneca College.

Today, I am in my last semester of my program. In this last semester we have a co-op placement, and I am blessed to be a selected at ‘Cathay Pacific Airways’.

I am excited to start my journey and looking forward to seeing all ups and downs in flight and life.
