Sweet being a wolfhound 👀
Alpha being a wolfdog 👀👀👀👀👀👀
Oh! But asking about another character, what about Storm?
My god, when I realized a breed of sighthound was used to hunt wolves, I about died of joy
For Storm and her brother Fang, they got a breed change too. So far the Fierce Pack are changed from a pack of dobermans who were trained for guarding and stuff, they're a pack of abandoned fighting dogs. Athena (Blade) is the most respected dog not just for her ferocity, but also for her oracular power; the abandoned dogs don't know how to direct their rage without her. Dobermans can be intimidating, but they're not great villain material for this story, nor are they stupid like the books portray. I think chaotic neutral-leaning-evil diverse collection of fighting dogs would make for better antagonists than the neutral-evil-leaning-lawful dobermans.
Storm and Fang I've entertained on being pitbulls, the former a blue solid, the latter a blue brindle; the former to represent the sweet hippo-hearts and the latter to represent the aggressive ones.
Storm is the centerpiece of the Storm of Dogs prophecy, something I'm... still trying to figure out ngl. I think it's something like a cycle of prophecies amongst various animals to herald holding off the end of the world, and identifying who will be the one to hold it off. I'll have to read A2 to fully solidify it, since I gather it throws wolves and foxes into the mix while I'm also adding coyotes, badgers, crows, and potentially lynx and cougars. Each species has its own prophetic cycle identifying the individual who'll bring in the Storm of Dogs with some overlap and some unique aspects. Even dogs have their own prophecies, but they've preserved as nursery tales, something mother dogs tell their pups to entertain them.
I know I've talked a lot around Storm and not a lot about her, but I'm just not great at solidifying characters'... well, character. Characters are the puppets with which to enact plot. Characters who have the amount of detail OC creators love tend to work better with low-stakes narratives like romance and slice-of-life, not plot-focused stories where entire societies are at stake. This isn't to say all plot-focused narratives have cardboard cutouts of characters, but while planning, plots and characters can and will clash with one another somehow, sometime, some way, be it a character not functioning in their role in the story or the story not fitting for the character. If something isn't working, trash it.
This got off-topic and I'm not sure if I'm making much sense, but oh well. I like Storm in Survivors proper and hopefully she'll get minimal character changes in Redux. She'll definitely get some POV time in whatever equivalent to A1 exists before gradually becoming the main character in the equivalent to A2.

General thoughts/ideas on Sweet?
Clearing out my inbox and saw I missed this! Sorry!
Sweet is a strange character in Survivors. Due to the shoddy writing, she ends up treating Lucky extremely cruelly and yet somehow he still hold affection her at the end to sire her pups by next arc? If I were treated by my crush the way Lucky was treated by Sweet, I'd go for greener pastures. She has astounding potential tho.
First things first, Redux!Sweet gets a breed change. Greyhounds are too skinny and thin to be able to live without human assistance. One bad injury and she'll be dead by week's end. So she's changed to be a much hardier breed that can withstand Northern California while still keeping her a sighthound: a wolfhound. She could be a mix with strong wolfhound influences, but she's primarily a wolfhound.
Redux!Sweet retains her canon backstory of "I used to be in a pack but then I got caught", but she flees northward after departing from Lucky. She bumps into the Wolfdog's pack, and the two are extremely wary of one another. Sweet feels pity for the dogs under his rule, and plots to undermine the Wolfdog and usurp him herself. She plays the part of supportive second-in-command because she's trying to stay on his good side to blindside him in the future. Upon seeing Bella's potential for leadership, she ropes her into her plans, setting her up to become second-in-command if she becomes boss, or to carry out the rest of her plans if something were to happen to her.
She still treats Lucky pretty badly, though not out of malice. She's deep in character, and if she gets too friendly with Lucky, the Wolfdog is going to treat her poorly too. Lucky's pretty hurt by her treatment of him, and his ideal of her is shattered to the point he doesn't want to be romantically involved with her anymore by story's end. They do make up, don't worry, but it's not the same.
Upon becoming the boss of the OG wild pact, the pet pact, and Twitch's pact, she makes movements to get the dogs more independent from one another and turn them back into a proper pact, or rather trio of pacts. Martha and Lucky are given more importance as oracles of the Waters and the Earth respectively, and she teaches Bella and Twitch how proper leadership is done for dogs.

Ok I know this blog isn’t super active- but I got this random memory of Sunshine the other day. In the hypothetical redux… she doesn’t stay a wild dog right?? Or she gets a breed change perhaps?
I have dogs a similar breed to her and they need (NEED) to be brushed at least weekly. At least and that’s pushing it. And the idea of a dog similar to them being out just… living as a wild dog bothers me a tad. Her coat! The matting I couldn’t imagine.
I was pleasantly surprised to find this in my inbox! Don't be afraid to send in asks, I mostly don't know what the end-state of arc one should be so it can pick up from arc two and that's the paralyzing factor.
As for Sunshine, you are absolutely correct about her coat. It's even weirdly highlighted in this passage from Book Five The Endless Lake:
Tumblr media
I couldn't find much of a long-term narrative use for her, so she'll probably be shipped off the plot somehow during the Homeward-Bound-esque first leg of the story. She'll have her utility in that she's the only dog who can understand TV and she likes being helpful to the others like in Survivors Proper, but her narrative usefulness quickly drops as soon as the pets integrate with the Wolfdog's pack.
So here's the options I got for how to deal with her. Content warning for backstabbing and suicide below the cut, reader discretion is advised. If you're unable to read further, know one of the options for her is one where she ends up happy and healthy.
Leaning into the more adult side of YA, dogs believe that they should serve the purpose humanity bred them to fulfill. Sunshine, being bred to sit and look pretty, is much more of a load on the party, unable to hunt or scavenge well. Her one utility might bring them out of a scrape or two, but as her fur grows longer and gets dirty and matted, she runs the risk of getting infections in her skin and succumbing to a slow death.
If we want to give some of our protagonists some unsavory qualities, they can discuss (potentially with Sunshine present) that she's a burden on the party and needs to be gotten rid of for the survival everyone else, though other dogs can argue on her side that she's their friend and they can't just let her die.
Here are her options:
One of the dogs arguing against her kills her on the spot. Or kills her some other time. Could even just be an attempt on her life that the other dogs thwart, and now they have to deal with wounds inflicted from infighting that could get infected.
Sunshine's special item is the leash her old lady gave her walks on. If you know that one discussion at the beginning of Isle of Dogs... She still has her collar on...
Alternatively, if they last long enough to get out of the evacuation zone, Sunshine could be left with a lonely human who desires animal companionship. The human cleans her up, trims her up, and makes her feel personally fulfilled being a sweet little lap dog.
If anyone has alternative options for her narrative path, I'd love to hear it. I'd even like to hear others' thoughts on these options. Whatever fits best.

Breed: Golden Retriever / Chernobyl Dog mix
Backstory: A once-beloved pet living in the City, self-imposed leader of the band of abandoned pets. Grew up hearing the stories of a City abandoned long, long ago.
Bella's arc is about coming into her own as a leader, and learning leadership is less about bossing others around and more about creating fertile ground for one's charges to flourish. She will start having perspectives during the journey to find their humans, and will continue having perspectives for the entire First Arc.

Breed: Golden Retriever / Chernobyl Dog mix
Backstory: A stray who scavenges among the City after escaping his abusive household. Trained by canids of all kinds and befriended by a strange little crow.
Lucky's arc is fundamentally about learning to rely on others just as much as himself, sacrificing for the benefit of others, and taking value in others' lives.
not sure what else to put in here, but i'll reblog when there's more stuff to work with

hmmm an idea for wild packs in general:
Instead of a single pack of like 15+ dogs cause that’s just not sustainable or realistic, how about several nearby family groups that all have their own kinda territories? Like, not super protective of their land just a “this is occupied think twice about settling here” mentality, and they semi regularly band together under Mr Wolfdog because he’s the strongest. Lots of taking small prey until deer season or something which is when Wolfdog calls the mega pack together?
You're not far off the mark from what I made!
Packs have now become Pacts, and are more a loose conglomeration of dogs who swear fealty to a leader, called a Boss. In an ordinary pact, dogs live a little more spread-out from one another, usually sheltering with their sibling, lover, companion, or family. The Boss is the one in charge of organizing dogs to take care of a threat or negotiate with other Bosses.
Pacts only gather during nights of the full and new moon and other important nights for the great howl. Nights of the full moon also are the appropriate times for new dogs to swear fealty to the Boss and for puppies to undergo the final step in their coming-of-age ceremonies. These great howls are for dogs from the same pact to get to know one another and to learn of any new dogs in the region.
The Wolfdog subverts this by making everyone sleep in the same camp, nearly micromanaging their lives, and punishing dogs when they behave how he doesn't want them to. Most of his dogs were strays, abandoned pets, or were born into the pact, so most of them are extremely vulnerable to his abuse.

so I started working on Lucky and immediately got stumped on something. I already had to throw his canon breed (Sheltie-Retriever) out the window since he and Bella are treated as medium-large dogs, yet Sheltie-Retrievers are on the smaller end. I'm definitely keeping that Golden Retriever half for the friendliness, but he and Bella need a new half.
So, new poll. I only ask you do some cursory research before making your decision.

Lucky wins!
So the order thus far will be Lucky, Bella, the Wolfdog, and Sweet. Mickey will be held back for the next batch!
now that I've read the first arc, it's time to get rewriting. first place just means they'll be done first, second place will get done next, etc, etc.

So out of curiousity would you be changing the names of the dogs similarly to how some of the pets in Iterum/Redux had their names changed.
I remember being absolutely baffled reading Survivors when Lucky knew that Bella meant “beautiful” and wondered how the hell a dog knew this.
I might if they would make more sense in the context of their character arc or backstory, like Moon, Snap, and Twitch are probably gonna get a rename for just how confusing their names are in the context of dog religion and puppy names, and maybe some of the pet dogs might change their names to something else after getting acquainted with the wild, likely Bruno given his frequency of wanting to fit in.
I personally think it's fine that the dogs in Survivors understand and adopt the names the humans give them - they're man's best friend after all - yet not the cats in Warriors keeping names like Sasha and Cody and Monkey. Cats would see their human-bestowed names as "not their real name", but dogs would for what I'd assume are fairly obvious reasons.'I personally think it's fine that the dogs in Survivors understand and adopt the names the humans give them - they're man's best friend after all - yet not the cats in Warriors keeping names like Sasha and Cody and Monkey. Even then, the dogs don't really know Mickey is a diminutive of Michael which comes from the Hebrew name Mikha'el which is a rhetorical question of "who is like God?" They just recognize and adopt the funny sounds their humans are making; good frickin luck if one of them overhears a conversation about their dog's name meaning and have just enough mental capacity to keep up with them.

This seems super interesting! What book are you currently on and what characters seem weakest(writing and personality wise) to you?
Even though the month is soon to be wrapping up, I'm only a few chapters into Darkness Falls.
Also all of them have the weakest writing so far. Because this is an Erin Hunter series. Sorry for the copout of an answer, but that's my legit opinion.

hey guys, this blog ain't dead on arrival, I'm just trying to figure out what to post first since I have no idea what to do. I'm partially wanting to wait until I finish the books to string together anything since it's better to adapt/remix a character arc than to make a guess and fail at it.
if you guys got any ideas, shoot. let's get this ball rolling.
also if anyone has a clue as to what this frickin storm of dogs could possibly be, that'd be great

Introduction to the Blog
Alright, let's get this out of the way.
The name's Lynx and I'm the curator of this blog. Whilst reading The Empty City, I got the desire to rework Survivors' world and lore, but that's a herculean undertaking, so this is my way of scratching that itch while still giving me freedom to do things higher on my priority list.
Here's how this'll work.
At the time I write this, I'm currently reading the first arc of Survivor Dogs by Erin Hunter. On this blog, I'll write down cursory overviews of lore, factions, or characters to serve as a jumping-off point. You guys will then add, embellish, or analyze these elements and present your own takes to contribute to the lore. This is were my role of curator comes in, as I'll be the one interweaving people's suggestions into a coherent tapestry.
My only requests before you contribute to the blog are as follows:
I wish for you to have read Survivors
Or I wish for you to have a good grasp on Survivors Redux's lore.
Some notes about the atmosphere of Survivor Redux:
This iteration will be curated for at least a young adult audience.
Animal biology and behavior will be upheld as faithfully as possible in Mythic Animal Xenofiction standards.
Dark subject matter is permitted to be explored, but I only ask for it to be handled in a nuanced manner. (If you need any content warnings tagged for blacklisting purposes, just let me know!)
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
