i think this song works so perfectly for john and sherlock, the beautiful relationship they have and how they fit together like puzzle pieces, they are truly the best team and totally lost without each other.

Our coming-of-age has come and gone Suddenly the summer, it's clear

sherlock and john meet at a time in their lives where they have grown up. they have lived separate lives and have both assumed that they are fine on their own. then 'summer comes', they meet and it becomes clear that they have more growing up to do, they push each other to change and be better.

this line is john speaking, sherlock has never had a lack of courage in his convictions, he speaks his mind and john respects him for it. john has been away from civilian life for some time, he has less experience in standing up for his values when it really counts, but sherlock pushes him to.

And it's just around the corner, darling 'Cause it lives in me

sherlock thinks he is dangerous, he believes he is unfeeling and logical and he hurts people when he is trying to help. he has been told this so much he accepts it as truth. sherlock thinks he is inherently dangerous to know, because, despite his deep understanding of how humans work, he doesn't know where he fits into that. he keeps causing people pain when he doesn't mean to, so he warns them against him.

no, I could never give you peace

this is the truly beautiful message of the song. sherlock needs danger, he thrives off cases and mystery, without it he loses the will to live and spirals. John loves to investigate with him, this has been made clear as he comes back to work alongside sherlock time and time again, however, he does not NEED it as sherlock does. in the chorus, it truly shows how sherlock is telling john that a life with him, can never be peaceful.

but I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm

what better metaphor to describe sherlock holmes than a fire. he blazes around london, bright and powerful, once set off there is little point controlling him but he channels his energy towards burning out all evil he can find. john is struggling until he meets sherlock holmes, the fire to make him feel alive again and warm his brittle heart, toughened by years in a war.

if your cascade ocean wave blues come

all these people think love's for show but I would die for you in secret

sherlock ruined his whole reputation, died a fraud and a traitor, to save john, lestrade and mrs hudson. the man who once scoffed at the weaknesses of human emotion finally understands how powerful it is and truly dies for them in secret.

the devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me would it be enough if I could never give you peace?

the devil really is in the details for sherlock holmes. his head runs round with theories and deductions and observations. "it's always you john watson, you keep me right". with the swirling mess inside his head, it's watson's constant presence that keeps him from losing his sanity to the devil of unending thought.

your integrity makes me seem small

despite his intelligence and incredible abilities, sherlock often loses sight of what matters to normal people. i believe there is no time that sherlock feels smaller than when john is yelling at him for being unfeeling. especially as sherlock often does not know what he has done wrong, he feels superior to john in every way apart from emotions. in that he feels inferior.

you paint dreamscapes on the wall

a dreamscape is "a landscape or scene with the characteristic of dreams". both sherlock and john have dreams of what life could be like, but, as the show goes on, they each become happier with their reality, raising rosie in 221b, even if it isn't perfect.

however, the dreamscapes could also be about sherlock's mind palace, because what better way to describe a mind palace than a dreamscape of information.

I talk shit with my friends it's like I'm wasting your honour

john perpetuates his friends' general opinion that sherlock is cold and has no feelings when he knows that isn't true. he makes jokes at sherlock's expense when it is clear that sherlock is not emotionless, he just doesn't show emotions in the same way.

and you know that I'd swing with you for the fences sit with you in the trenches.

sherlock and john are with each other in the highs and lows in life, when they solve cases and save lives or when they lose the ones they love most. they may drift apart but they will always come back to each other. the wartime imagery of trenches could also reference john's army history.

give you my wild, give you a child

this line is so perfect, in the last scenes of the final problem, john and sherlock are seen raising rosie together. she may not be sherlock's child but john is entrusting him with her care as they raise her together. i think this is a really beautiful conclusion to their story, especially because of how much john struggles to trust sherlock after the six thatchers. it clearly depicts that the trust there is stronger than ever as john allows sherlock to be such a big part of rosie's life.

give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other

the understanding between john and sherlock is unmatched. the amount of communication that goes unsaid throughout the whole show is so intricate and detailed and yet they both understand the other one very clearly. a level of connection that allows them to be so incredible at what they do.

family that I chose now that I see your brother as my brother

Is it enough? But there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west

sherlock and john can never relax, they have made too many enemies over the years, there are people everywhere who are angry at them and nothing can change that. but they don't let that come between them, they fight their robbers and clowns together.

I'd give you my sunshine, give you my best

sherlock wants to be his best self for john, so many times we see him trying to change something in his life when john asks him to. sherlock truly values his opinions. however, sherlock also always attempts to only show john and those around him his 'sunshine', he struggles to be vulnerable and open with others.

but the rain is always gonna come if you're standing with me

john and sherlock both know that life would be easier for john if he didn't stand with sherlock, but he does anyway, and I think that is such a powerful thing.

SERIOUS HEARTLESS SPOILERS

i was just beginning marissa meyer's beautiful prequel to alice in wonderland when i first played taylor's song for a friend. she immediately heard the parallel between the two and, when i finished it, i totally agreed.

here is my analysis of how catherine's love story in heartless links to taylor swift's wonderland.

let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start) (i'm sorry, that was bad)

flashing lights and we

took a wrong turn and we

fell down a rabbit hole

you held on tight to me,

cos nothing's as it seems

and spinning out of control

the alice references are clear and intentional but the immediate 'spinning out of control' foreshadow's the book's inevitable chaotic ending, the scene is immediately set for Catherine and jest's tragic love story.

didn't they tell us don't rush into things?

didn't you flash your green eyes at me?

haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?

this pre-chorus seems to mimic the gossip and constant judgement catherine and jest face from all directions.

yes i read the book right, jest does have gold eyes but i think the simple fact that eyes are mentioned makes up for the slight colour difference. jest's eye colour is a detail so often described as he flashes smirks and side eyes all over the place that it only makes the connection to this song stronger.

ooh, didn't it all seem new and exciting?

i felt your arms twisting around me

i should have slept with one eye open at night

jest and catherine fling themselves head first, fearless, into their newfound love. perhaps too fearless as they forget all the dangers of the world they live in.

we found wonderland, you and i got lost in it

and we pretended it could last forever,

we found wonderland, you and i got lost in it

and life was never worse but never better

catherine’s life has gone wrong in every way possible, her dreams can never come true and she must marry a man she does not love, and yet, she is lost in a wonderland of hope. her life was truly never worse but, with jest, never better.

so we went on our way,

too in love to think straight,

all alone or so it seems.

but there were strangers watching,

whispers turned to talking

and talking turned to screams.

THIS SONG COULD NOT BE MORE PERFECT AND IT HURTS. jest and catherine set off on their mission to solve all their problems but we know that that never happens. their blind hope only makes the pain of their failure hurt more.

Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?

Didn't you flash your green eyes at me?

Didn't you call my fears with a Cheshire Cat smile?

i mean, we are all aware of the deathly qualities of the smile of a certain joker...

Ooh, didn't it all seem new and exciting?

I felt your arms twisting around me

It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses their mind

FORESHADOWING. life is fun and games ‘til jest is KILLED and catherine loses her mind. someone prove to me that taylor didn’t read this book.

i reach for you but you were gone

you knew i had to go back home

you searched the world for something else

to make you feel like what we had

and in the end, in wonderland

we both went mad.

this bridge does not apply to jest and catherine but to catherine and the hatter. without jest, without their martyr, they both search the world for a reason to live and without that reason, without jest,

they both went mad.

let me begin with the title, and the oxford dictionary definition of illicit:

and therefore, by definition, an illicit affair is not exclusively one that involves a separate marriage. emma and julian are prevented from being together because of the shadowhunter law preventing parabatai from falling in love, making their relationship an illicit affair.

the link does not stop here though, the lyrics of the song line up so perfectly in so many ways, let’s start with the first verse.

make sure nobody sees you leave,

hood over your head, keep your eyes down.

tell your friends you’re out for a run, you’ll be flushed when you return.

take the road less travelled by, tell yourself you can always stop.

what started in beautiful rooms, ends with meetings in parking lots.

this is a simple connection, emma and julian have to hide their relationship and this verse perfectly encapsulates that. the secrecy and the realisation that their love will not be easy and beautiful, especially with so much against it.

and that’s the thing about illicit affairs and clandestine meetings and longing stares.

it’s born from just one single glance,

but it dies and it dies and it dies, a million little times

so much of what makes this parallel so perfect is taylor’s unrivalled ability to put the beauty and pain of a secret love into two sentences, the chorus alone has few specifics and yet it seems to be speaking directly about emma and julian in a poetic but painful line.

i am going to skip to the bridge as the song only gets more perfect in this parallel.

and you wanna scream don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby,

look at this godforsaken mess that you made me.

you show me colours you know i can’t see with anyone else.

we know what colours julian can’t see with anyone else, they are in all the paintings of emma he has hidden away...

don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby,

look at this idiotic fool that you’ve made me

you taught me a secret language i can’t speak with anyone else

can this song get anymore painfully perfect? emma and julian have a secret language of sorts when they write on each other’s arms...

and you know, damn well, for you i would ruin myself, a million little times.

emma and julian put their whole hearts into a relationship that they believe can never happen, one that jeopardises their whole lives.

with this final line, taylor puts the final brushstroke on the painting and simultaneously drives the knife into our hearts

this song is so beautiful and i hope you will hear it anew with this parallel, i love linking characters to songs, it gives an added depth and emotion to both sides.
