Ben Doran messaged on Facebook: “When I received the "music only version" of the "The Gaelic Blessing" podcast, I was immediately reminded of one of the most moving arrangements of The Irish Blessing that I have heard  -  - by Bill O'Connor and Larry Theiss on their – "Traditional And Original" recording.
I am getting ready to have a day off tomorrow and will  get to chores and baking for the "Wild Hog in the Woods" usual Friday night concert that we host at a neighborhood center here in Madison. While I am mixing and baking, I'll surely/certainly listen to that "Gaelic Blessing" program in its entirety. Thanks!”
Ryan S. emailed some photos: "Hi Marc. I love the Celtic Women episodes!!
I am currently building trails outside of austin while I listen to the cast.the spring flowers are already out!"
Shel O'Toole emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, As I'm listening today I'm promoting the International Women's Day event I organised for the Ballarat and District Irish Association. The all women trio I play with, Skedaddle is performing on the day.   I'm also looking at ways to promote my newly released poetry book Wildsong. I'll be officially launching it at the IWD lunch.
I'm loving the Celtic Women special. There's so many fabulous Irish women singers and musicians. Noirin Ni Rian, the sean - ós singer and chanter, Sandra Joyce singer and bodhran player are two amazing teachers I met at the Irish World Music Summer School  - Blas, many years ago.  Niamh Parsons & Delores Keane are firm favourites & I love discovering new  female artists.
I'll probably go to a session on St Patrick's day and there's a band playing at one of the Irish pubs in the evening I want to see.

Favourite Songs From 2020
My 110 favourite songs of the year - basically one song per artist and then I doubled up on songs from my ten favourite albums of the year - Taylor Swift, Pheobe Bridgers, The Strokes, The Killers, Porridge Radio, The 1975, The Weeknd, Fleet Foxes, Soccer Mommy PUP - rather than do a seperate albums list. So 100 artists total.
It was definitely a year that I listened to songs more than albums. Blame Spotify for shrinking my attention span or the lockdown for pushing me more towards short bursts of pleasure.
I think it was a great year for music though, this list is as strong as any in recent years. Dominated by indie rock for the most part, and in turn as heavy on female led acts as any year, as they have taken over the rock scene (for the better) over the past couple years.
1 - Phoebe Bridgers - Kyoto 2 - King Princess - Ohio 3 - Taylor Swift - exile (feat. Bon Iver) 4 - The Strokes - The Adults Are Talking 5 - U.S. Girls - 4 American Dollars 6 - The Killers - Imploding The Mirage 7 - Caamp - By and By 8 - Nathaniel Rateliff - And It's Still Alright 9 - Porridge Radio - 7 Seconds 10 - The 1975 - If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) 11 - The Strokes - Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus 12 - The Weeknd - Blinding Lights 13 - Bright Eyes - Mariana Trench 14 - The Killers - My Own Soul’s Warning 15 - Mt. Joy - Strangers 16 - Dayglow - Can I Call You Tonight? 17 - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Be Afraid 18 - Phoenix - Identical 19 - Car Seat Headrest - Deadlines (Thoughtful) 20 - The Beths - Dying to Believe

Online shopping from a great selection at Books Store. Hi Jax & Hi Jinx Autobiography on @FeralHouse Love @DameDarcy -----------------Japan--------------------- Mom and I went to the San Diego Comic Con that year, and we met Press Pop, who invited me to come to Japan. Jim Woodring and Daniel Johnston were also there. It was Christmas, and there was a window display in the department store of Santa nailed to a cross surrounded by gifts. Speaking of gifts, they were so cute to me there, I received mermaid gifts of weird pale aquamarine toned glittery face powder and bright turquoise mascara. Also, there are eye drops that have this harsh minty stuff in them like dropping toothpaste in your eye which everyone loved and was addicted to. God I wish I could have that again. I saw a real geisha run past me in the dark hallway like alley paved with ancient cobblestones in Kyoto. They have the best socks in Japan, I think it’s because you have to take your shoes off everywhere so everyone sees them. Everything had a cartoon face on it and were made out of comics. Like for instance, in the cab, there were little public service STD announcements in little brochures hosted by smiling talking penis wearing a condom hat. There are crazy fashion trends beyond imagination. A lot of people have permed body waves and all kinds of colored hair. There were girls who had orange spray tanned skin and white lipstick and nails wearing all yellow. And dudes with permed afros and tons of gold chains emulating black rappers. Though in public places like the train station, there were only holes in the floor to stand over and pee. When I came down the escalator in this place, though as mentioned before everyone was really different looking they all stared at me like I was a unicorn freak or something. It made me feel a little self-conscious all the time. There was a lot of morbid innocence defiled imagery. Like animated baby heads vomiting black blood while their cities burned down. Maybe, it’s from when they were bombed in the forties. The Godzilla imagery. And I was astounded by the abundance of Lolita fashion and how this world and mine shared all the same elements.

Billie Eilish - “my future” [Darkroom / Interscope Records]
Tumblr media
Billie Eilish is not one to sit still, even if the world has stopped moving for the most part right now. This comes on the heels of a massive last year and big start to 2020 thanks to last year’s mega hit debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? turning her from an Internet alternative-pop prodigy to a festival must-see and eventually, an awards-garnering household name. “my future”, only her second new music since 2019′s epitaph “everything i wanted”, is her way of setting her sights on better times. “Can’t you hear me? / I’m not coming home / Do you understand / I’ve changed my plans / ‘Cause I’m in love with my future / Can’t wait to meet her,” she sings. The listen pairs up a switch-up between a slumbering ballad and an upbeat dreamer's oasis is a good look for what’s to come...

glass beach - “running” [Run for Cover Records]
Tumblr media
glass beach may as well be time travelers themselves considering the buzzworthy Los Angeles post-emo band managed to released their debut album the first glass beach album three times digitally and physically within a year’s span by the start of 2020. When news broke that they were contenders to be on the soundtrack to Bill & Ted Face the Music, that felt right at home. Unfortunately, their song written for the Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves’ surfer bro rock ‘n roller time-bender didn’t make the final cut, but Glass Beach are releasing it anyway. It’s called “running”, and its got all the monsters of rock energy coupled with the band’s 8-bit emo epics that would have made for a most excellent theatrical montage.

No Age - “Turned to String” [Drag City]
Tumblr media
Earlier this summer, noise pop architects and Los Angeles DIY scene heroes No Age return with another recommended album with their fifth full-length effort Goons Be Gone. It’s a listen that once again finds them bending light and electricity through noise, punk, and pop atoms in the air, which under these days of sweltering sunlight, has a way of dizzying us through the season. The album now gives us a visual that does just the same for the track “Turned to String”. Directed by Jonn Herschend, it follows performance artist and cinematographer Katie Faulkner tearing through the ‘burbs under her own accord.
youtube
tricot - “Omae” [Cutting Edge]
Tumblr media
Across the ocean, the year began for Japanese experimental rockers tricot with the release of their major label debut Black for the Japanese label Cutting Edge. An unfortunate byproduct of that move is that it feels like without an American label relationship championing their work right now, the best of the Kyoto quartet is getting lost out there, because with that album and the release of the new standalone single “Omae”, they’re venturing beyond the ear-boggling math-rock of their early work and still sound fascinating even when bouncing around the soundboad with a punk-pop energy and melodic hardcore aggression. If you will, imagine this is what a J-pop take on Saves the Day would be like.
Wicca Phase Springs Eternal - "I Want to Go Out Tonight" [Run for Cover Records]
Tumblr media
This Moment I Miss, the new collaborative EP between the face of the GothBoiClique, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and dark-pop producer Darcy Baylist, is one of the latest recommended listens. The pair spoke with FLOOD Magazine to discuss some of the influences behind their creative process, and called the track “I Want to Go Out Tonight” a straight-up witchhouse tracks. Judging by the EP”s latest video for the track directed by ADAM from PHRENDS, the granular VHS aesthetic paired with Adam McIlwee’s emo mugging and brooding naturecore energy fits astutely.

We've played five of the eight games in this drawer.  Two Innovation expansions are taking up additional space here.  I would really like to get the complete edition but it's been out of print for a while.  Also, there’s an appearance by Sei!
The three games we haven't played are Shadows in Kyoto, Mottainai, and Fantasy Defense.  Shadows in Kyoto is an EmperorS4 game that was imported to the States.  We have it because we enjoyed our time with Hanamikoji and love the theme.  Glory to Rome is one of my biggest white whales.  I missed out on acquiring the black box addition and have never been willing to pay the absurd prices for a card game.  Mottainai is Carl Chudyk's evolution of that game with a theme that rivals it in our affection.  Honestly, I don't know how I haven't gotten it to the table.  Fantasy Defense is a cooperative turn-based tower defense game.  The huge footprint is the only reason we haven't managed to play this yet.
We have played Innovation, Marrying Mr. Darcy, High School Drama, Galaxy Command and Polyhedral Park Planner.  Innovation has been in our collection for years and it's been years since we played it.  I've been holding out hope for a reprint of the complete box but I should just go ahead and get this back to the table.  Marrying Mr. Darcy is exactly what is sounds like and, as my wife is a big fan of Victorian literature, this will always have a place in our collection.  High School Drama is one of the oldest games in our collection and is basically The Sims, set in high school, with a few more rules.  Every time we play, our goal is to get our characters to date.  Galaxy Command is a semi-cooperative space exploration game that I always confuse with two other similarly themed games in our collection.  This needs a replay so maybe I'll finally remember exactly which one this is.  Polyhedral Park Planner is a print-and-play roll-and-write where you're trying to tailor your park to the random goals for that game.  It's deceptively thoughtful and we've had a lot of fun each time we played it.
There's nothing in this drawer that's really under purge consideration.  Galaxy Command needs a replay but the semi-cooperative nature probably still keeps it in the collection.  I really want to play Mottainai and I'd like to get back to Innovation.

Darcy is looking beautiful in her yakuta (cotton robe) while feasting on shojin ryori (multi-dish gourmet Buddhist vegan cuisine) and sitting on tatami mats. We’re staying at a Shingon Buddhist monastery in the mountains south of Kyoto called Fukuchiin. The gardens are the views out of our window. Later the trays will be removed from our room and replaced with futons for sleeping. Feeling super lucky again!

This week, we caught up with 10 really good albums released so far this year that you should listen to, escaped to post-emo band Glass Beach’s buzz, experienced a post-hardcore “Miracle” as part of Sparta’s comeback, ran away with rising Chicago indie-pop quartet Varsity, traveled to “Kyoto” with Phoebe Bridgers, and did our part of social distancing with love forever from Charli XCX.
Here’s the best of the rest from the week of April 5th, 2020…
Angel Olsen - “All Mirrors” (Johnny Jewel Remix) [Jagjaguwar]
Tumblr media
Angel Olsen previously teased that there would be an acoustic version of last year’s epic, grandly-produced storyteller All Mirrors. There’s no word on if that’s still a forthcoming plan, but with the arrival of a new remix of the album’s standout title track from Johnny Jewel, an alternative would be to give him the reigns to reworking every listen in his singular Italo disco synth reflection. Olsen is also streaming a ticketed acoustic and piano live set until 6pm on Sunday, April 12th, with proceeds going to the MusiCares relief fund supporting her touring band and crew during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Beths - “Dying to Believe” [Carpark Records]
Tumblr media
With just the right mix of indie rock licks, punk kicks, and emotive resonance, New Zealand four-piece the Beths made a promising first impression with their 2018 debut Future Me Hates Me. On July 10th, they’ll be following it up with their sophomore effort Jump Rope Gazers, and they’re rolling out with righting the wrong kind of relationship energy in a supremely pepped up kissoff of a lead single in “Dying to Believe”. Sure, the tightly wound verses and hooks feel effortless, but rest assure that the emotional labor on the part of vocalist Elizabeth Stokes is unfurling as fast as her relationship. “It burns me, but I’ll smile through the heat / I’m dying to believe that you won’t be the death of me.” Callum Devlin directs its instructional video.

Boy Harsher - “Electric” [Ascetic House / Nude Club]
Tumblr media
Western Mass experimental electronic duo Boy Harsher released one of last year’s best album’s in Careful, but in the time since, they’ve also been revisited its 2017 listmaker EP and predecessor Country Girl with an expanded release entitled Country Girl Uncut. One of its standout listens “Electric” now has a visual to accompany it, and as usual, Boy Harsher’s synthetic movements in the dark continue to be the perfect environment for an entrancing, nightmarish watch. Directors and creative minds Idan Brazani and Taka Arakawa helmed the visuals, filmed in Tokyo, which includes a venture into suspense and horror between the neon glow.

Hayley Williams - “My Friend” [Atlantic Records]
Tumblr media
“My Friend” is the latest preview off of Paramore leader Hayley Williams’ forthcoming solo debut Petals for Armor, set for release on May 8th. The listen continues to follow the dark alternative-pop trajectory of its preview singles with Williams’ voice toeing over syncopated beats, thin lines illuminated in synths, and cascading over cavernous post-emo rhythms. To date Williams has shared eight songs from the album in the form of a five-track EP, and more recently, a collaboration with boygenius alongside the track “Over Yet”.

Sugar High - “Ugly” [DERO Arcade]
Tumblr media
Back in March, King Woman overseer Kris Esfandiari introduced us to her umpteenth project of the year, Sugar High, a collaboration with Australian emo-rap producer Darcy Bayliss (Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Georgia Maq) with “Losing”, the morose yet sultry leadoff single from the duo’s debut album Love Addict, due out on April 28th. Its latest preview “Ugly” follows in pursuit from the polar opposite side of longing with a self-loathing in a smattering of aggressive post-trap hi-hats and bass-heavy beats. Martyna "gingerdope" Wisniewska.directed its accompanying visuals, an ultraviolet smear of entwined bodies against an occult alter.
