Sister and I have been discussing ReiMob again – specifically, they're out late at an exorcism, riding back to the office after another salt splash. It's the third night of this in a row and Mob is overtired and overworked. He drifts off and falls asleep on Reigen's shoulder, sleeping straight through to their stop. Reigen tries to wake him up, but he isn't fast enough, the bus/train is gearing up to leave and so he does the first alternative that comes to mind: he picks Mob up, balanced on his left hip, heavy enough to set him off-center. Mob wakes up just enough to burrow into Reigen's collar, warm and familiar. They maneuver so that Mob's arms are looped around Reigen's neck, and at some point on the way back to the office he wakes up entirely, and he's not sure why, but he doesn't speak up, doesn't ask to be set down. This is new. Mob is paralyzed and he doesn't know why. His face is hot. Reigen smells nice. He's steady, footsteps sure even with Mob weighing him down and then they're there. He's set back onto his feet, Reigen ruffles his hair and the moment is over.

Without really knowing why he does it, Mob pretends to fall asleep the next few times – he's not very good at acting, not like Reigen, but he never pretends to the point that it's a problem, never does it on a day when Reigen has pulled a hamstring or strained himself massaging a client. They let it slide. Eventually, Mob gets too big for Reigen to safely carry.

as someone who’s arospec/ace, and headcanons reigen as aroace, i deeply adore the relationship reigen and mob have — not necessarily in a shippy way, but it’s so touching how the two of them have become so important to each other, if not, arguably, the most important person (in reigen’s life at least). reigen was searching for meaning and purpose and grew bored of all the things he has tried. and then mob shows up in his life as this earnest little kid who wants to trust him, and it makes reigen want to be someone worthy of mob to look up to.

for mob, reigen is his last line of defense. as long as reigen has a handle on the situation, mob has faith in him, and reigen has faith in mob. the moment reigen is lost (during dimple arc), mob feels truly alone. i love that they’d do anything for the other if the other is in danger. relationships can be incredibly deep and meaningful without “shippy-ness” or any extra attachments. they’re important to each other in a way that’s not familial, friendship, or romantic. i often joke that it’s an inverse anime mentorship, and it kinda is, but it also goes even beyond that. it’s just clear that mob and reigen mean something incredibly special to each other.
