I feel like I’m getting somewhere medically. My GP reckons my symptoms are mostly because my current borrowed wheelchair isn’t (and to a lesser extent my old wheelchair wasn’t) meeting my postural needs and my breathing has been more restricted which is causing more issues (because oxygen is important). We’re running some tests to check there’s nothing more sinister going on but it’s a pretty good explanation I probably should have thought of myself.

I could list some of LXC's more obvious traits here, like the fact that he's kind and gentle and treats everyone around him with respect. He is very supportive of his loved ones, and respects their choices even when he worries about them. He had a lonely childhood but despite having only one or two friends in adulthood seems content with a few close relationships and doesn't seek out further friendships. He has a playful sense of humour that comes out with his close friends and family, e.g. his teasing of LWJ and NMJ, and his little teacher-student game with JGY. But instead I think I want to dig into his underlying principles and how they should be accounted for when writing him.

LXC is a peacemaker, but he seeks compromise in an active way rather than in a passive 'both sides' way, and the times at which he steps back and chooses not to intervene are the times when he judges that his intervention would make the situation worse. He is a good, kind person and his reputation and the opinions of those close to him bear that out. But there's also a lot going on behind LXC's gentleness and kindness that needs to be accounted for. Specifically, that when his options narrow he is capable of making hard choices.

LXC spends a lot of time listening to others: we see it in the source material, and we're explicitly told by the narrative that it is extremely unusual for him to interrupt anyone. This isn't just because LXC is a lovely polite person. It's because he wants to understand others. And that's not because he wants to get to know everyone, since as established the only close relationships he has in canon are with his brother, NMJ, JGY and to a lesser extent NHS. But LXC is very, very interested in motive and context. While consequences obviously matter to him, he also places huge weight on intentions. And in order to know someone's intentions—well, you have to listen to them. All this comes to the surface during the temple sequence, in which we get a really good look at what LXC thinks and how he behaves in a scenario where there are no good options.

There's no disputing LXC's goodness, but when writing him I do my best not to depict him as too naive or oblivious when faced with difficult decisions. He spends almost the entirety of canon lacking key information through no fault of his own, but once he is presented with an indication that there might be something wrong he actively seeks evidence and investigates. He is accused of naivety by JGY when he suggests that JGY could simply have broken off his engagement with QS and avoided that particular pitfall, but that is during what can definitely be described as a stressful moment, and I wouldn't necessarily take it as a definitive statement on LXC's naivete or lack thereof. Yes at the temple LXC is grappling for other courses of action that JGY could (should) have taken, but that's his initial kneejerk reaction to some pretty horrific revelations. For example, when JGY points out that LXC's proposed alternative (not marrying QS) would have led to disaster, LXC acknowledges this and accepts that JGY had to marry her. Where JGY is able to put forward a logical assertion as to why he committed terrible acts, arguing that they were the least bad of a litany of bad options, LXC is able to accept his reasoning.

This is actually one of my favourite things about LXC: he is in theory prepared to accept anything as long as the justification is convincing enough. When JGY lists all of his supposed crimes and says to LXC that LXC knows him and knows he wouldn't have done any of those things without a good reason, LXC relaxes. At this point LXC believes JGY has orchestrated not only mass murder, but patricide, fratricide, the murder and dismemberment of his sworn brother, the suicide of his sister-wife, and also the infanticide of his own son (some of these untrue or ambiguous, but this is the info LXC currently has). And yet LXC's reaction is not 'there is no possible justification for this'. He is ready and willing to hear JGY out, because if JGY truly had good intentions then that changes everything. It's not a pass to immediate trust and forgiveness, but for LXC it is absolutely crucial.

And we do indeed see LXC agreeing with much of JGY's reasoning. His main source of distress by the time of the temple is the needless cruelty of the patricide and the needless mass murder attempt at the Burial Mounds; essentially, it lies where JGY cannot or does not justify himself to LXC's satisfaction. Where JGY is able to lay out a case that he had no other options, LXC is right there with him. He might not be happy about it, but he follows JGY's reasoning. That's what I think is vital when writing LXC: there is a certain naivety to him in that he finds it impossible to come up with drastic solutions of his own accord (see above and his unworkable suggestion re: JGY breaking off his engagement to QS), but if they are outlined to him and he is logically convinced as to why it is the best of a list of bad options, he will be on board. So LXC can be written as committing or endorsing quite terrible acts if they are placed in a context where the alternatives are worse.

That's what happens the moment LXC stabs JGY, in fact. In that moment, according to all the information LXC has, to follow through on his promise and kill JGY is the option that will cause the least amount of pain and damage overall. He doesn't put JGY's life or even his own devastation over doing what he believes to be the best thing for everyone else.

So, when I'm writing LXC, I'm constantly asking myself the same questions LXC asks himself in canon: what is the kindest thing to do here? Is the kindest thing to do nothing? Is the kindest thing, in fact, to do something awful—as long as it's less awful than any of the alternatives? As long as I'm satisfied I can answer those questions, then I feel like I'm generally on the right track.

To show the differences, for each Empathy scene that has an equivalent scene outside Empathy, I cropped the footage from both versions of the scene, lining them up where they are identical, letting them play next to each other where they differ—running at 80% speed, so everything's easier to catch. I also trasncribed the Chinese dialogue, and under each video I created a table indicating where they matched, where they differed completely, and where they differed subtly, bolding the differences to make them clear. Note that while this is comparing the Chinese dialogue, this dialogue is always accompanied by the YouTube subs English translation. I also discuss the "am I the evil exchange", which I think is also frequently misinterpreted, perhaps due to a reluctance to fully acknowledge NMJ's antipathy towards the Wen. Anyway, I digress. I hesitate to call it a rogues gallery because personally, I don’t think most of the people on my list are villains; they’re victims who are sick with a horrible virus. Though some of these people have gone up against Spider-Woman and were actively doing crimes and whatnot, others never had did anything bad per say… they just were at the wrong place at the wrong time when the outbreak was in full swing. And some of these people, while not infected, have been less than friendly to me. Here are some notable examples:

Dr. Curtis Connors/“the Lizard”: Dr. Connors.. was a colleague of mine and an employee of OsCorp.. I met him several years back at a conference, he’s a brilliant geneticist and he was quite interested in my work in bioengineering. He was also a herpetoculture hobbyist and he just adored lizards. I used to consider him a good friend… right up until he got infected. From what I could gather from my encounter with him, I hypothesize that one of Dr. Connors’ lizards might have been initially infected at one point and it transmitted the virus to him after biting him. I’m almost certain it was his prized Chinese water dragon. Whatever the case was, the result was the same: he eventually turned into this… massive, bipedal, monstrous lizard. He, along with his infected pet lizards, now stalking Druid Hill Park, nearby the Baltimore Zoo.

Dr. Michelle Morbius/“the Living Vampire”: Another colleague of mine, I first met her at a scientific exhibition about 3 years ago. She was a biochemist and I recall her expressing her desire to take part in a hematology clinical trial at OsCorp’s laboratory due to a rare blood condition she had. But… Dr. Morbius vanished a year before the outbreak. I haven’t heard from her since then… but I suspect the strange, bat-like creature that now lurks around Westminster Hall might be the answer to what had happened to her after she vanished.

Felix Hardy: I have.. mixed feelings about Felix. Supposedly, Felix claims to be an investigative journalist from Norfolk who wanted to investigate OsCorp, though I’m not sure how truthful that is... I feel like he knows more than he lets on. Like me, he wants to go into the OsCorp labs as well and he and I have crossed paths in my treks back into the city. Even though he’s never really tried to antagonize me and he has helped me a few times (though he does tend to flirt with/tease me for reasons I don’t fully understand… does he actually like me or is this all just to get a ride out of me..?), I don’t entirely trust him… or rather I don’t trust his motives, whatever they are. What does he want from me? Why can’t I stop thinking about him?

Nora Osborn: Though as far I know, she hasn’t been infected yet, I do believe that she is most likely the one responsible for this outbreak. It feels like everything I learn about the NH virus (and to a lesser extent, the OZ virus), it always seems to be coming back to her and/or OsCorp. But, I need more evidence to truly be sure of my suspicions. I need to find her… or maybe her daughter, Hera. That is of course, if either of them are still alive in spite of everything. I feel like I’m missing something important regarding the Osborn Family, and obviously, she’s been hiding something. I wonder if Pax ever found anything on her. If I ever do come across her, I will exercise caution. Speaking of Pax…

Pax Parker/“the Harvester”: Or, previously know as Spider-Woman. I first met her about five years ago, by chance, when she saved my life. I, along with several other civilians, were caught in the infighting crossfire of several Maggia members. It got rather messy, though it would’ve become fatal had Pax not intervened. I would sometimes see her in passing but I truly got to know her when a work friend of mine, Dr. Elena Wirtham, brought her in one night after a particularly vicious fight. Now, we weren’t supposed to meet, I just happened to walk in on Pax as she was being secretly tended to by Elena. I realized who Pax was pretty quickly given the circumstances but, I promised her that I would keep her secret and that I’d offer help to her whenever she needs it. It was the least I could do. From then on, we quickly became good friends! She seemed to be just as interested in science as I am, though she was a talented mechanical engineer/programmer while I dealt with bioengineering and viral pathology. But.. I wasn’t there for her when she truly needed me the most. I remember she hurried into the hospital nearby the lab as she got bit by some sort of animal and she got quickly treated for rabies via postexposure vaccinations. She got the treatments done and all seemed fine… until over two months later we all learned the hard way that whatever Pax had been infected by, it was not rabies at all. And by then, others were beginning to get infected too… I failed Pax Parker. And in some ways, I failed this city too. It’s only right for me to find something to cure or at least stop its spreading. I don’t feel good calling Pax a villain but… now that she has been infected, she has become violently aggressive and has started the beginning stages of the mutation process. But… due to her spider-powers she got from a spider infected with the OZ virus, I think it had slowed down the stage progression significantly compared with others and she seems to be more lucid than most of the infected individuals I’ve encountered. But I need more evidence to back that up. But maybe I could still save her…

Hmm, going off your last interactions, I think people misunderstood you on your reasons why you ship Naruto and Sasuke. Nowhere in your blog do you say that Naruto is Sasuke's "savior" or anything like that. Hell, you constantly point out the flaws this ship and criticize some of the fans that ship these two characters. You're one of the few blogs that ship these characters for legitimate reasons based on the manga/narrative. And some need to understand that there are legitimate, factual reasons why Sakura is hated in the fandom. The same goes for SS and NH, to a lesser extent. I feel your posts offer the most criticism on SNS, which is why you get alot of hate. And people need to respect the fact that your blog is not Sakura friendly. I don't necessarily agree with everything you say on this blog, but I believe alot of folks don't take the the time to understand your posts and it shows.

It was just kinqpein, they’re a Sasuke fan who dislikes the ship and diverted our argument about Sakura to me shipping Naruto and Sasuke.
