“mummy, what is it?” changbin asked in distress, lifting his arm up so his mother could see clearly.
his mum gasped, “that’s your soulmate, changbin!”
“i don’t like it! mummy, i hate it!” changbin shouted, rubbing his skin raw.
the tattoo was multi-coloured, the small drawings of plants and portraits of the sky taking up the whole of his lower arm and changbin couldn’t hate it more. words were written along the bottom in a deep black, the only thing interesting about the whole tattoo.
‘until we meet, i will be unable to see the purpose of anything. until you fall in love with me, i will be unable to see the beauty in the world’
“hello,” you said, putting on a fake smile and bowing as another customer stumbled in from the windy day outside.
he smiled, walking up to the display of cakes and pastries, glancing along.
“can i have a raspberry muffin?” he asked, his voice raspy and his hair messy atop his head.
“of course!” you said as happily as you could, getting the muffin out the case, “anything else for you today?”
he looked at the board above you, “and an iced americano please.”
you nodded, handing him the muffin as he handed you the money, “your americano will be ready in a second.”
he smiled, “thank you.”
you sighed as you turned around, gathering everything you needed and beginning to make the coffee.
“good morning y/n,” felix smiled, tapping either of your shoulders as he went into the back room and pulled his apron on.
“morning,” you grumbled.
“oh! jisung! what are you doing here?” felix smiled, seeing the boy picking at his raspberry muffin behind the counter.
“felix? i didn’t realise you had a job!” jisung exclaimed, smiling at the sight of his apparent friend.
felix shrugged, “gotta get that bread, plus this is y/n’s place, gotta help out a lonely girl.”
you rolled your eyes, finishing up the americano for the boy (who you recently learned is named jisung) and handed it to him.
jisung nodded, looking at you, “i haven’t seen you before, are you from around here?”
you nodded, completely unhappy to be talking to yet another person today, “yep. born and raised.”
“she doesn’t leave her house,” felix chuckled, nudging you.
jisung nodded, furrowing his eyebrows as he continued to look at you, as though he was trying to read you, “hey, Y/N, have you met your soulmate?”
before you could answer, felix lifted up the sleeve of your hoodie, showing off the tattoo that covered your entire lower arm.
“that’s incredible!” jisung exclaimed, studying the multi coloured swirls around your arm.
the drawings were of many things: some of cakes and pastries, some of microphones and lyric sheets. across the bottom, the words ‘until we meet, i will be unable to be happy. until you fall in love with me, i will be unable to laugh’ were written.
you snarled at felix, pulling your arm away before jisung had chance to read the words.
he chuckled, “me and my friends are having a party this friday night. we’re inviting everyone we know in hopes someone will meet their soulmate.”
“that’s stupid,” you scoffed, “why do you assume that you’re the key to people meeting their soulmate?”
“because it’s happened before, bean!” jisung exclaimed, “okay, gotta go. bye felix, bye bean.”
“don’t call me that,” you grumbled, watching as the smiling boy walked out your shop.
“there she goes again,” felix muttered, going and cleaning the coffee machine as you began to snarl at him again.
___________
“i’m not going felix,” you said, rolling your eyes.
“come on y/n! you were invited by jisung himself! j.one! everyone else is coming by word of mouth!” felix exclaimed.
“and?” you said, shrugging, “tell him i apologise but your royal highness will not grace them with her presence this evening.”
“i expect this dress to be on and for you to be outside my door in half an hour,” felix said, throwing the newly bought dress on your bed and walking to the door.
“felix!” you whined, watching him go, “felix!”
but he was gone.
you sighed, rolling onto your back and staring at the ceiling for a while, before looking at the dress he’d bought. you felt bad seeing the price tag, but you couldn’t go. you didn’t even know jisung! he was just a boy that had come into your coffee shop and nicknamed you ‘bean’.
you sighed, standing up and looking in the mirror as you put the dress against your body. it was sleeveless, the perfect chance to see your tattoo.
“absolutely not,” you muttered, pulling the new dress off and pulling your pyjamas on.
half an hour later, you were eating crisps while watching sky castle and laying in bed as a loud banging continued to rap against your door.
“y/n, hurry up! you were suppose to be doing this to me! not the other way round!” felix shouted.
you groaned, getting out of bed and stumbling to the door, opening it to see an agrivated felix turning even angrier at the sight of you.
“what are you doing?!” felix shouted.
“you can’t go to a party looking like that, bean,” jisung sighed.
“really?! you got jisung round?!” you exclaimed, shutting the door in their faces, “give up, guys, i’m not going.”
“fine! but expect some visitors later!” jisung shouted before you heard footsteps, and no more sounds after that.
you sighed, the ominous comment confusing you, but choosing to ignore it as you went back to bed.
____________
“y/n!” jisung shouted, the banging on your door second loudest to the voice coming from behind it.
you sighed, getting out of bed and walking to your door, opening it to reveal jisung and two other men men, both covered in tattoos.
“good day,” jisung greeted you, walking into your apartment, “hey, have you got any food, bean? i’m starving!”
“why? no food at your party?” you scoffed, watching him walk into your kitchen and open the fridge.
“no, there’s tons,” jisung shrugged, “we left just for you.”
you furrowed your eyebrows, “go back jisung, and your friends, or would you really prefer to spend your night with a miserable 20-year-old girl?”
“well, i have my reasons, so i’m staying here,” jisung said, coming back to the front door having attained some oreos, “this is chan and this is changbin, guys this is y/n.”
you nodded at them, “how do you know them anyway, ji?”
“oh, they’re my best friends,” jisung explained, to which the tallest of the two boys at the door muttered ‘debateable’, “we run a tattoo parlor together.”
“oh. well, explains that,” you said, motioning to their arms.
chan laughed, nodding. changbin meerly smiled and nodded.
“alright then, come in,” you said, confused in yourself, what was the point of them coming over?! but, then again, why ask yourself that?
“why didn’t you come?” jisung asked, watching as you went into the kitchen to get them all drinks and snacks.
you sighed, shrugging, “i didn’t see the point.”
“oh, have you found your soulmate?” chan asked, he was sat next to jisung and changbin was sat on the floor.
you shook your head, “nope. still stuck with this ugly tattoo. you?”
chan nodded, getting up and walking to you, “here, in between the others? ‘julia’.”
“julia?” you repeated, “where did the rest of your tattoo go?”
“it disappears when you fall in love,” chan explained, “much to the dismay of me and changbin here.”
“why?” you chuckled, pouring four drinks out.
“we’ve spent our whole lives in the tattoo industry, just trying to find ways to cover our tattoos,” chan explained.
“then chan goes and finds his, so i have to recruit jisung,” changbin finished.
“have you got tattoos, jisung?” you asked.
the younger boy nodded, pulling up his long sleeve t-shirt’s sleeves. on one side was his soulmate tattoo, on the other several cartoons.
you nodded, looking at them as you came over and put the snacks down.
“what does yours say?” jisung asked, “mine says that they’ll never be able to swim at all till we meet and they won’t be able to swim in the sea until we fall in love. but look! the entire thing’s water! i feel so sorry for them.”
“what does the water have to do with it?” you asked, watching him as he looked at his tattoo sorrowfully.
“the drawings are to do with your soulmate’s interests,” jisung explained, “so yours is someone who likes cakes and music! but what does it say?”
“oh, just something stupid,” you laughed nervously, pulling your sleeves down so they were over your hands.
“no, what does it say?! soulmate tattoos interest me so much!” jisung exclaimed, reaching for your arm.
you pulled your arm back as quickly as you could, slapping changbin’s face in the process.
“i’m so sorry!” you exclaimed, jumping up, “are you okay?”
changbin tilted his head back, blood spilling from his nose, “yeah, i think i’ll be—“
“come on,” you said, taking his arm and pulling him up, leading the way to the bathroom, “changbin, i’m so sorry.”
changbin smiled, “it’s fine! honestly, y/n.”
you got as much tissue as you could, holding it to his nose, “ah, i don’t know what to do, i’ve never had a nose bleed before.”
changbin smiled, shaking his head as he held the tissues to his nose until he thought the bleeding stopped (which it had). but you kept tissues in your pocket, just in case.
____________
“hel– changbin? oh hey,” you smiled, seeing changbin walk into your bakery.
“hey y/n,” changbin smiled nonchalantly, walking up to the counter, “jisung was right.”
“huh?” you asked, scrunching your face up.
“jisung told me this was your coffee shop, and he was right,” changbin explained.
“oh, okay,” you nodded, “so what can i get you today?”
“um, what do you recommend?” changbin asked, smiling at you.
it was shocking. the overall visual of the boy, and things felix had told you, had led you to believe that changbin was one of the grumpiest people alive, never smiling and never joining in with anything. but here he was, smiling at you while stood in your coffee shop.
“well, this is inspired by my soulmate,” you said, motioning to the chocolate pastry at the bottom of the window, “i’ve got drawings of them all up my arm.”
changbin smiled, “okay then, and can i have a black coffee?”
there it was, the classic ‘i-drink-coffee-the-same-colour-as-my-soul’. you rolled your eyes as you turned around to get a cup.
“anything else?”
“i’ll have a vanilla frappicino please,” changbin said, smiling, “i can’t drink coffee.”
oh.
you smiled, “that’ll be £9.16.”
changbin handed you the money as you quickly laughed, this boy was full of surprises.
“hey,” you spoke, so unusually full of confidence, “have you found your soulmate?”
changbin sighed, shaking his head, “chan and jisung throw those parties for me. they’d never say that out loud but i know they do.”
you nodded, “but jisung hasn’t—“
“i know,” changbin said, “but he’s so fascinated by other peoples to have time to find his own.”
you chuckled, “he seems to be that way with a lot of things.”
changbin nodded, “he is.”
you handed him his order and he thanked you, going to sit in the darkest corner of the coffee shop and pulling out a notepad, starting to sketch.
“good morning to you!” felix exclaimed, skipping in.
you smiled, laughing at your overly-happy friend, “good morning felix.”
“oh?” felix asked, stepping back, “what happened here?”
“i don’t know,” you laughed, “everything just seems to make so much sense now!”
felix furrowed his eyebrows, pointing at you, “who are you and what have you done with y/n?”
you laughed, swatting his hand away, “i am y/n, you fool!”
felix gasped, “maybe you met your soulmate! and now you realise how beautiful and purposeful the world is! look outside, the sun’s shining! the birds are chirp—“
“and they are giving me a headache,” you finished, “i may be fine now, but the world is still ugly and against me.”
“and she’s back,” felix said, walking into the back room to get his apron, “i missed you.”
you rolled your eyes, “shut up lix.”
____________
“hey,” you spoke, gaining changbin’s attention again, “want another refill?”
changbin looked at his empty coffee cup before nodding, “yes please.”
you walked over and collected his cup, refilling it with a latte (he needed something ‘stronger’) before handing it back over to him.
“you alright?” you asked, glancing at the concentrated boy.
he looked up at you in confusion, “yeah, i’m fine.”
“it’s just that you’ve been sat here all day,” you said, “i was just wondering if—“
“no, no, I’m fine,” changbin smiled, “the shop’s closed today and i was going to do this at home but this place is just so relaxing, i lost track of time.”
you nodded, “well, it’s okay with me. i’ve got to do some baking for tomorrow.”
“oh my god, are you closed?!” changbin exclaimed, looking around.
you chuckled, nodding, “changbin it’s fine, as i said, stay until i’ve finished baking, you seem to be pretty busy anyway.”
changbin sighed, nodding, “hey, this may seem really weird but, um, could i watch you? you know, baking?”
you chuckled, “sure, follow me.”
changbin smiled, picking up his notebook and latte and fitting his pencil behind his ear as he followed you to the kitchen, sitting himself on a chair with access to one of the work benches.
“do only you and felix work here?” he asked.
“full time, yeah, felix says he’s doing it so he can inherit the shop,” you chuckled, getting out the ingredients, “we’ve got two part timers though: jeongin and seungmin. jeongin’s a teenager and seungmin’s a college student.”
changbin nodded, “but this place is yours?”
you nodded, “yep. my parents left me a load of money to do whatever i want, and i bought this.”
changbin smiled, “but, why?”
“my soulmate, whoever they are, they like cakes and pastries,” you chuckled.
changbin smiled, nodding, “i got into tattoos due to my tattoo as well.”
“really? did you like the design?” you asked, glancing over at him as you began to weigh everything out.
“no,” changbin said, “i hated it. i used to sharpie over it, but it would always come off, i needed something more permanent.”
“do you not agree with soulmates?” you asked, confused.
“i mean, i’d like to find mine,” changbin sighed, “but that’s only because of our connection.”
you chuckled, “me too. i thought these were suppose to be happy.”
“is yours not?” changbin asked, going back to his drawing.
you hummed, “not at all.”
“neither,” changbin said, “i just wish they’re happy, wherever they are.”
you nodded, humming in response.
the room fell into silence besides slight tunes the two of you hummed, before the smell of freshly baked goodies was pouring out the oven.
you never realised being with someone could feel this comforting. you never really thought about it having any purpose, spending time with others. but it was in that room that you understood. changbin made it make sense.
“how long will they take?” changbin asked, glancing up.
“25 minutes, but now probably about 5,” you said, wiping the side, “have you finished?”
“mostly,” changbin said, standing up and stretching, his tummy becoming exposed from under his black t-shirt, “want to look?”
you turned around, nodding eagerly as changbin picked up his notebook and walked towards you.
he held it open, flicking throw the pages of designs. they all had headings, things like ‘nature’, ‘animals’, ‘skulls’.
“changbin, you’re amazing!” you exclaimed, looking through the pages in amazement at the drawings.
changbin blushed, “chan’s better bu—“
“i won’t believe it till i see it,” you said, turning to face the boy.
it was only then you realised how close you were to him. you were close to touching, changbin’s face near yours and your hand was on top of his, holding the notebook.
you chuckled, taking a step back, “sorry, that was—“
“no, no,” changbin said, also taking a step back, “it’s fine, i just—“
the timer began to beep, making you jump, but changbin just smiled. odd, you thought, most people would have burst out laughing, but then again, changbin wasn’t like most people.
you reached down, getting all the bakes out the oven and letting them cool as you chose some music, blasting it throughout your small coffee shop and dancing around.
changbin made no noise, but you could feel his eyes watching you.
“y/n,” changbin said, smiling as you looked back at him, eyebrows raised, “do you want a tattoo?”
___________
“i really cannot choose,” you said, flicking through your friend’s notebook for the hundreth time in the past two weeks, “why is this so hard?!”
changbin just smiled, shrugging as he looked through himself, “what do you want? nature?”
“yes, 100%,” you said, nodding.
“i thought the world was ugly and against you,” changbin teased.
you furrowed your eyebrows, “i guess i used to feel that way.”
over the past week, there’s just been more occasions when you stopped to smell flowers on the way to work and began to water the plants at the coffee shop. sometimes, you lay down outside and look up at the sky, taking in the natural beauty.
but that wasn’t the you everybody knew.
“but i find it all so beautiful now,” you chuckled, “the flowers and the sky and the green grass and the—“
“i get it, i get it,” changbin said, smiling, “so, what is the most beautiful?”
“daisies,” you said, “or just flowers in general?”
“and where do you want it?” changbin asked, turning to a new page and getting his pencil.
“on my forearm,” you nodded, “but that would look a bit weird, wouldn’t it? such a big tattoo on this arm and a tiny one on this one.”
“well let me look at your soulmate tattoo,” changbin said, offering his hand.
you paused, but rolled up your sleeve, giving him your arm.
for the past week, the boy in front of you, despite the 30 degree water, had been wearing hoodies and jackets out of desperations of not wanting anyone to see his arm.
suddenly, a few days ago, underneath the tattoos that chan had filled his arm with years ago, there was no longer portraits of the sky and trees, and flowers. there was only one word: y/n.
he had fallen in love with you so quickly, he hadn’t known what had happened, but it all made sense to him when he noticed the swirls of colours gone. your suddenly positive attitude was confusing everyone but changbin, but he knew he couldn’t tell you.
you weren’t in love with him.
“until we meet, i will be unable to be happy. until you fall in love with me, i will be unable to laugh,” changbin read, “unable to laugh?”
you nodded sadly, “it’s so shit, changbin. i’m causing so much unhappiness in this poor person’s life and i– i don’t even know who it is!”
changbin nodded, tears threatening to spill as he grabbed his bag, shoving everything into it before pulling you into a hug as he usually did.
“i just remembered something i have to do. i-i have to go,” changbin lied, rushing to your front door, “i’ll finish your tattoo design. promise!”
“wait! changbin!” you called, but the door slammed shut before you could say anything else.
and there you were, alone again.
