2011 Monaco GP
Round 6. Monaco. I know so far this season has been great but I can't imagine they managed to make Monaco interesting even then.
(Well in retrospect I was somewhat wrong...) (also no gifs this time 😔)
Sergio Perez crashed in quali and won't be able to race. It's a serious crash. He has a concussion and bruises on his legs. He's okay though.
Quali report! Nico crashed in a similar way in practice and Mercedes had to hurry to fix the car. He managed 7th, while Schumacher is 6th. Alonso was 4th. But for Lewis... He was fastest in Q1 and Q2, but then Perez crashed and Lewis had been saving the fresh tyres for a last minute attempt and he cut a chicane on his last try so his time got cut. He's 9th. He's not happy about it. Jenson is 2th, splitting the Redbulls. Of course seb is on pole.
Jake quotes Lewis "with racing experience you would assume most people would have that, we didn't have that." Jordan agrees McLaren is having strategy issues and Jake adds that Jenson has been critical in the last couple of races. Coulthard says at least you have to give credit to McLaren for letting their drivers speak their mind because that hasn’t always been the case.
Formation lap.
Lewis will start on the harder tyres while all the others seem to be starting on softs Jenson already says he has very heavy steering.
And they're racing!
Loads of movement! We have Seb, Jenson, Alonso who jumped Webber, then Nico who's up two places, Massa, Maldonado, Petrov, Lewis still ninth. Schumacher went doooown in 10th. But now Schumacher overtook Lewis FROM THE INSIDE IN THE HAIRPIN damn. Lewis says Schumacher touched him and he has a puncture? Apparently that happened in the first corner though.
From the garage, Ted says there's no issue with Lewis tyres but he's already falling behind. Yeah. I knew this was gonna be a bad race.
We see a replay and there was some contact to his rearwing. He's just behind Schumacher but well. This is Monaco.
Ah nvm. He did it. He overtook him.
On lap 16 Jenson pits already. As does Nico. And as did Schumacher. Seb also comes in. Oh my. Not only are they putting him on hards but they weren't quite ready and he's losing time. Webber is also in. Oyyy. They botched both stops. Alonso also stops so now Jenson is leading in front of Seb. Webber is way down in 14th now. No wait, Alonso got out in front of Seb in p2.
Lewis also pits from 7th but again the mechanics weren't ready. Wtfffff. He's gonna be so mad. He's losing so many places. Jesus. 9.7 seconds. He's out in FIFTEENTH. Auszgdgegehe I’m so done with this fucking race. We're not even a third done. I hate it.
32 laps in Lewis is racing Massa for 10th. Jenson is still leading. Timo Glock retires. Jenson pits again and again he's out in clear air while Lewis is stuck in the traffic, actually making contact with Massa in the hairpin as he tries to pass him. And Massa is off the road probably because of the damage of that contact and the safety car is gonna come out and fuck everybody's race. Great job Lewis. Also he's probably gonna get a penalty for that so yeah. Great weekend really. Now Schumacher has stopped at the entry of the pitlane. Seb hasn't pitted from the lead with the SC. This is cursed. Actually Massa crashed on his own maybe? Lewis overtook him in the tunnel and Massa slid on the marbles and caught the wall.
Brooooo. McLaren asked Lewis if his wing was okay and Lewis says it should be okay but Massa turned on him. "It was on purpose". No it wasn't come on.
We’re finally more than 50% done and I've stopped paying attention cause fuck Monaco. Lewis gets a drive through of course. He's 7th atm so yeah.
Jenson pits. This is critical as Redbull was waiting for his tyres to run out and he's been told that if he wanted to win he needed to overtake Seb on track. Redbull doesn't respond and Seb doesn't pit yet. He's out on the hards... He's stuck behind Buemi for a few seconds and then he's full out. Will Seb pit? No he really doesn't. Lewis does though. He's 9th.
Seb is still not pitting and that might have been a bad decision for Jenson. This is so looooong...
10 laps to go. Jenson is stuck between Alonso and Seb but their tyres are starting to fall apart. Oh god oh god. This was really boring but there's huge traffic behind Petrov and the lead caught up to them and there's been contact! Petrov in the wall, Alguersuari in the wall, safety car deployed, the three leaders are through though. Lewis was in the midst of that too, where is he now? There's 8 laps to go and that safety car will be out for a while... Oh no. McLaren is clearing space in the garage it seems Lewis got damage from it... Someone is retiring anyway. Yeah Jenson is still looking okay it's for Lewis for sure. Broken rear wing. He's still out though. Yeah that's not good he has to come in or he'll catch another penalty for dangerous driving. He got hit in the back by Alguersuari after Lewis had to brake because Sutil made contact with the barrier. That was a mess. Oh what. The medics are on track? But Alguersuari got out fine and Petrov didn't crash that hard did he? Is the race gonna finish under safety car?
Red flag?!
So that's the end of the race...
Hopefully Petrov is okay?!
So Seb wins, followed by Alonso, Jenson is third. Lewis is 7th.
What is going on.
Actually everybody is behaving as if the race might restart again? So mechanics on the grid, cars on the grid, everybody on the grid.
We hear Petrov has been moving but he's complaining about pain in his back.
Ah and actually the race will start again even though they covered more than 70% of the distance... So they're now fixing Lewis rear wing on the grid even though nobody has the right to do such mundane things as changing tyres.
It'll be a safety car start then. What a weird weird race.
Ah Ted says they heard that actually Petrov was very still and eyewitnesses think he was indeed knocked out by the shock but quickly came to. In any case he's now okay and talking, being taken out of his car. We see them pushing his empty car away now.
Now they are actually able to do whatever they want to the cars? Apparently they were wrong before they're just not used to red flags...
15mn to the restart as we see a McLaren mechanic carry a front wing from Lewis’ car to the garage.
Someone from Renault confirms Petrov is okay but his legs are hurt, nothing too bad it seems, no fracture but bruising and that's why it took some time to get him out of the car. The word concussed has also been thrown out. No problem with his back.
Yeah I don't think we'll have no after race content with that. Istg if I watched this awful race and don't get one gif out of it I'm gonna be pissed.
McLaren seems to be struggling to repair the rear wing and they will have to stop working on the car soon.
Here we go. Safety car start. 5 laps to go.
Annnnd they're racing again!
Oh shit. Are you fucking kidding me. I'm gonna throw things at a wall. Maldonado has crashed. Because he turned into Lewis who might just get another fucking penalty. Istg. I wanna slap 2011 Monaco Lewis so bad. No safety car though somehow. These marshals are legends. So Lewis is 6th but an investigation is pending. I can already tell he won't say it was his mistake after the race and it's gonna piss me off even more. Lewis is racing Webber and Kobayashi hopefully he doesn't crash into someone again... Two laps to go... DRS enabled. Webber pushed Kobayashi to make a mistake, he cut the chicane and so now Webber is through. Last lap.
And it's finally the end of the race!
Seb wins, Alonso p2, Jenson p3.
Lewis p6 but who knows for how long. Terrible race for him.
Yep. We don't even get the post race interviews so no content at all for all that.
I'm gonna look up what happened to Petrov and Lewis after all that.
So Petrov said afterwards he didn't lose consciousness but he couldn't feel his legs very well so he thought it would be better if the medical team helped him out. He was in pain.
And Lewis did get a 20s. Penalty. He kept his 6th place though.

“Max,” Daniel calls to him from the bedroom, just as he is rinsing the shampoo from his hair. Not wanting shampoo in his eyes or his mouth, Max keeps them all firmly shut.
“Baby?” Daniel says again, louder.
The warm water is a gentle relief running over his sweat sticky skin, nowhere near the scalding temperatures Daniel sets their shower to at home. It’s why Max had insisted that they clean off separately, the Austin heat far too much for Max to endure boiling water too, despite Daniel’s pouting and dramatic insistence that Max couldn’t just ‘fuck and flee.”
“Yes,” he calls when all the suds are safely sliding past his shoulders, but he didn’t need to shout. When he opens his eyes he sees Daniel leaning against the doorway with a smirk, still wearing his unbuttoned satin shirt, cowboy hat and nothing else. His wedding ring sits heavy on his finger, and Max thumbs over the matching one on his own hand.
Max’s come is a shiny presence he can still see smeared between Daniel’s thighs.
The sight of him makes Max’s dick twitch. Daniel notices and his grin only widens.
“Baby,” he says again, too sweet. “Baby, why is your most recent Google search is it weird that my husband saying yeehaw makes me come?”
And just like that, Max suddenly longs for a hot shower, an excuse for why his cheeks start to burn red.
“Why are you snooping through my phone?” He demands, forcing himself not to turn away casually and instead keep rubbing the hotel’s own body wash under his armpits.
“I wasn’t snooping,” Daniel says easily, “I was looking to get us some ribs delivered, my phone died at the track, remember?”
Max makes a noncommittal noise because vaguely he does remember Daniel saying he needed to put it on charge. That was before Max started pawing at him the moment the hotel door shut behind them though, and then it had been forgotten by both of them.
There’s just the noise of the extractor fan whirring for a moment, but Daniel doesn’t move. When Max sneaks a glance at him, he’s still leaning against the door frame looking amused.
“Sooo.” He drawls out the word in the stupid Texas accent that Max wishes he didn’t find so strangely sexy. “Are we going to talk about this, little lady, or-“
“Nope,” Max says firmly, turning off the shower.
Daniel nods. It makes the lights of the bathroom catch on his chain and Max- Max really wants to fuck him again.
“What about the one below it?” He asks, “Daniel Ricciardo Austin 2023 photos?”
“Nope,” Max says again, stepping out of the shower and reaching for his towel. He’s smiling now too, because he knows that beneath Daniel’s teasing that one will have made him happy to see.
“Okay,” Daniel says, then he unlocks Max’s phone. “What about how to ask my husband to-“
“Daniel,” Max interrupts, taking the phone from his hand and putting it into the empty sink. “Do you want to read more of my internet history, or do you want to get back on the bed and play good cowboy, bad cowboy again?”
Daniel grins, takes the cowboy hat from his head and puts it onto Max’s. When his arms wind around Max, the silky fabric of his shirt presses cool against Max’s shower-warm skin, his nipples.
“Well, when you put it like that,” Daniel says, leaning in to put his mouth on the skin just beneath Max’s ear. “Yeehaw, baby.”
Max laughs and pinches Daniel’s ass, at the same time as his dick twitches again. Backing him out of the bathroom, towards the bed, his phone is forgotten in the bathroom.
Google never had all the answers when it came to them, anyway.

Fernando Alonso & His Relationship With Cards
I'm sure we're all familar with the cards on the back of Fernando's Vegas GP helmet by now, but did you know his relationship with cards goes a lot deeper?
I. Magic Tricks
You've probably seen or heard someone at least mention Fernando's propensity for card tricks. As far as I can tell he was doing them(publically) as far back as 2003 all the way to as recently as 2018. Even once performing a card trick, with a condom and a teddy bear(!??!?!??!!), in front of Valentino Rossi who said "How was that possible?"(x)
But how did this start? According to James Allen, "Fernando admits to having been heavily influenced by his grandfather, a mercurial figure, who taught him magic and card tricks, still one of his passions away from the race track."(x) And I'm not sure the validity of this one, because I couldn't find an actual source, but apparently he once said: "My parents are responsible for the two things I like doing most - driving and magic tricks. They bought me my first go-kart and a magician's kit."
In several interviews he described it as his hobby off track, and that he loved learning new tricks and surprising others in the garage with them! So clearly cards are pretty important to him both as a hobby but also to who he is as a person since they've been with him just as long as racing has.
II. Card Symbolism in His Helmets
This is the reason I originally made this post, but I thought I should also explain the origins of his card fascination first. As I said, we probably all remember the cards on the back of his helmet in Vegas, but did you know that wasn't the first time he had cards on the back of his helmet?
From 2008-2013, he used to have a pair of cards on the back of his helmets. The symbolisms of the cards themselves as well as the evolution of their design is really fascinating to me! Even more so with the recent development of the card choice in 2023.
Fernando said he wanted to reference his two titles in some way on the back of his helmet and after his friend sent him several ideas, he decided on having two cards(an ace of clubs and an ace of hearts, sometimes pictured with 05 and 06 on them as well), saying: "I picked the cloverleaf [the ace of clubs - Ed] to give me luck, but the only pity is that it doesn't have four leaves!"(X)
2008.
Here's the very first appearance of the cards! They're displayed flat, with the 05 and 06 clearly visible
2009.
Very similar to 2008, but with a slightly different design, and they're maybe a bit more straight with less shadow?
2010.
This is the first major change! I was sad they didn't have the years on them anymore, but then I realized they're sparkly to match with his signature lightning bolts on the top of the helmet!!
2011.
Honestly I'm still somewhat unsure if this is the actual 2011 helmet? It's pretty difficult to find clear photos of the back of helmets from older seasons. It's easiest to find them on replica sites or auction sites so I'm not 100%? But anyways, I like that this has the championship years on the underside of the cards
2012.
This is when I started getting weirdly emotional about the helmets. Do you see how they've progressed from being a centerpoint to being curled up and sad at the bottom of the helmet? Not listing the year anymore??
2013.
Same thoughts as 2012. And after this season, they cease to exist (just like his ferrari chair in the garage, WOAH CALLBACK), until cards make a reeappearance in his Vegas helmet, albeit in a different form
2013 Monaco(Honorable Mention):
For some reason 2013 helmets were easier to find proper pictures of, so I happened to witness this absolute beauty. The creativity of this helmet genuinely blows me away??? Wanting to keep the card motif, but making sure to incorporate it into the rest of the puzzle piece design?? Mwah! There was another special 2013 helmet but they didn't change the cards at all so I really applaud this one
2023 Las Vegas(The Return of The King):
The magnificent return! But look! The cards are different cards! Instead of being two aces, it's now an ace of hearts, a four of hearts(his driver number of course!) and, the, now iconic, representation of himself as a Joker. I literally could not believe my eyes when this helmet was released and I saw the Joker card, what a fucking silly old man....I really wonder if he felt nostalgic having cards on his helmet again or if he didn't think about it all and was just like, "ah cards because Vegas!!!"
III. Why Does This Matter?
*The rest of the post was factual, this is moreso my personal thoughts on the symbolism of the cards/designs
This post spawned from me recently watching the 2010 Bahrain gp and noticing "hey wait a minute...are those CARDS ON THE BACK OF HIS HELMET!?" It's a really tiny detail that's unfortunately covered up by the HANS device pretty much whenever he's wearing the helmet, so it's really difficult to spot! But I became fascinated with the fact that he had cards on his helmet before that recent helmet, and now here we are!
There's something to me about how the design of the cards evolves over the course of six seasons from the cards being front and center to being smaller, more folded up and closer to the bottom of the helmet. As I said, the 2012-2013 ones genuinely made me depressed because it feels, symbolically, like his hopes for getting another Ace are becoming more and more unlikely and falling away until they eventually fall falt and fade away entirely after 2013 and disappear for basically a decade.
But when they return? They're not the same cards! Instead of representing Fernando's championships, they now represent him as a person, displaying his driver number and his persona of being a Joker!! Though I do think it's interesting he happened to keep the Ace of Hearts, even though he talked more about the Ace of Clubs before. I'm not sure it's actually this deep in reality, but I like to think that it's him not letting his championships(and the lack thereof) define him, but rather letting who he is as a person shine and be the centerpoint instead! But on a sadder note, as @suzuki-ecstar said to me, maybe the Aces aren't there anymore because he's lost all hope for a chance at a third Ace entirely :(

At 16, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc has just completed his final season of karting with the significant result of KZ World Vice-Champion its first year in 125cc gearbox. Winner of the Academy Trophy in 2011 and World Vice-Champion U18 in 2012, his rise has been meteoric for a driver who does not spend much time training on the track.
"Naturally I started in France in Minikart then Minime and Cadet before making my debut in KF3. The 2011 year marked a turning point in my career. I focused on an international programme including the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy. This competition takes place with identical karts and gave me a lot, especially as I finished first! But I also gained confidence. I also won the KF3 World Cup at Sarno, one of my best memories.
"The following year, I moved up to KF2, with the title of European Vice-Champion and a 5th place at the World Cup. But I wanted to participate in the U18 World Championship in parallel as a sequel to the Academy Trophy, because it is very useful to fight on equal terms. 2nd place at this level is a good result. I knew I would soon move to cars, but I took advantage of the opportunity to pursue karting for one more season. 125cc gearbox is a good learning experience before going to cars and I was able to compete with the biggest names in karting like Davide Fore and Marco Ardigo who made me dream when I was younger. I even took 2nd place at Varennes in the KZ World Championship behind Max Verstappen, a great satisfaction for a rookie like me!
"Numerous clashes with Max Verstappen track gave me additional experience that I am enjoying now. He is a formidable rival and competing with him builds character! I am currently preparing for Formula Renault 2.0 in 2014. Of course, the experience of competing in karts is irreplaceable, even if though the car world is very different. Karting has the advantage of driving a lot, you learn to manage stress and stay calm in the paddock, to put pressure on your opponents, and when you're in a well-structured team like ART GP, working constantly on data acquisition, which is very important in cars.
"To succeed in karting, you must have good associates. The family of course has a major role, as do the teams. All of the teams which I found myself in since Minikart helped me progress and I thank them because it is thanks to them that I can continue my career. Then being identified and supported by All Road Management and Nicolas Todt remains a fundamental point. I guess all the drivers who leave karting have a touch of nostalgia, but the lure of the new challenges we face is the strongest motivation."
