Kaiju Week in Review (November 20-26, 2022)
Tumblr media
Megumi Odaka, best known as psychic Miki Saegusa from the Heisei Godzilla series, retired from acting in 2000 due to health issues and disappeared from the public eye for a decade. The narration she contributed to Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex was her first role since then, and she's finally ready to go back in front of the camera. 3Y Film (The Great Buddha Arrival, Nezura 1964) has a new kaiju movie in the works, Hoshi 35, which Odaka is set to star in. Since it's a 3Y joint, and part of a celebration of the 35 years since her acting debut, expect it to get meta. As usual, Hiroko Yokokawa is directing; another key player is Daisuke Sato (Howl from Beyond the Fog), who will serve as director of special effects, cinematographer, and suitmaker (with Tomoya Ayaki).
3Y productions are known for bringing back veteran kaiju actors, and Hoshi 35 has already cast several besides Odaka, this time focusing on the Heisei era instead of the Showa era. Jun Hashizume played MOGUERA pilot Koji Shindo in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Kojiro Inaba in Ultraman Z, Daijiro Harada was Mechagodzilla captain Takuya Sasaki in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Akira Ohashi stepped inside Gamera in Gamera 2, Iris in Gamera 3, and King Ghidorah in GMK. He'll be playing another monster in this one, Hoshikuzu. Hiroshi Miyasaka and Yumiko Tanaka will appear as well.
No plot details are currently known. The film is aiming for a October 2023 release date.
Tumblr media
Gridman Universe, the crossover film for SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYANZENON, has a new pair of posters and a teaser trailer. It'll hit theaters in Japan on March 24 (and hopefully arrive in the West before the year is out). Excessive fanservice aside, I really enjoyed GRIDMAN, but haven't gotten around to DYNAZENON yet... it aired in Spring 2021, which was a pretty chaotic time to be a Wikizilla editor, and I think I was under the impression it was all mecha, no kaiju. Guess I have to now!
Tumblr media
Veteran Ultra Series director Takeshi Yagi debuted a proof-of-concept short at Tokyo Comic Con called AKARI, which you can also watch online. The story is simple—a giant heroine (Akari) battles a rampaging cyborg kaiju (Pythagodon) in a futuristic, neon city—but Yagi and company have far greater ambitions for it. They created it as part of a course on tokusatsu techniques, and hope to turn it into a feature or series with the funds from that course, as well as other crowdfunding efforts. The story they've drawn up is pretty intriguing: a 2076 Japan where corporations run amok, the AI uprising is at hand, and an alien race who survived their own rogue AI empowers a woman to save the Earth.
Matt Frank designed Akari. Akihiko Iguchi (Mechagodzilla, King Caesar, Titanosaurus) came up with Pythagodon, and boy, you can tell. I hope we haven't seen the last of them.
Tumblr media
One more kaiju short for you to watch: Ivalla the Land Mine Monster: Case of Extra. This one is in more dire need of subtitles to get the full experience, but there's still a quality rampage to witness. From the other videos on the channel, Yuki Kurosu has been working on this for 8 years—props for persevering!
youtube
Godziban squeezed another episode out of Godzilla Festival 2022, this one focusing on the puppet displays and demonstrations at the event and the upcoming Blu-ray-only episodes which will see Bagan make his debut and many others battling it out.
youtube
Kadokawa released a fine video tribute to Gamera for his 57th birthday, which naturally ends by teasing the Netflix project. Interesting that they skipped over the 2015 short though.
Tumblr media
Your reading assignment for the week is Patrick Galvan's excellent tribute to Kazuki Omori for Toho Kingdom, a well-researched overview of his career and analysis of the two Godzilla films he directed.

Characters
Ritsuko Kijima
The narrator and main protagonist of the series. She initially is skeptical of the existence of the paranormal. After meeting Magari, she is overwhelmed by the prospect of such fantastical things being real after all. As the series progresses, Ritsuko becomes increasingly accepting of the strange things that she and her friends encounter. She also slowly grows less introverted as time goes on.
Magarikunetta Yama no Megami Hime
A female kami who wants to build her own shrine. Ritsuko nicknames her “Magari”, much to her initial chagrin, though she eventually gets used to it. At first living on the streets of Enkotan, this doll-sized and short-tempered deity is captured and tormented by three amanojaku disguised as humans, but is rescued by Ritsuko. The experience causes her to become fed up with a life of homelessness, so she has Ritsuko smuggle her to the Kijima residence. After initially hiding in Ritsuko’s bedroom, Magari disguises herself by transforming into a mortal teenaged girl, taking on the alias Megu Hiroyama, having Ritsuko’s unsuspecting parents “adopt” her under the pretense of being a homeless orphan and transferring into the girl’s school with the help of some other kami that she knows. She was born in the Kofun period, when China first influenced Japan; thus she wears a vaguely Chinese dress with water sleeves. Despite coming across as rude and bossy, in reality, she does care for Ritsuko and her friends. Her full name (曲がりくねった山の女神姫) means “Goddess Princess of the Winding Mountain”.
Natsuko Takashima
Ritsuko’s classmate. Contrasting with Ritsuko’s initial skepticism, she is a firm believer in the supernatural, mostly the reason she is eyed as an oddball by the other students, whom she sometimes annoys with her antics. She is an energetic girl and bluntly says what she is thinking, although she also begins to change after meeting Magari.
Arisa Kida
A gynoid created by collaborating Japanese and American developers. Designated ALICE-2000, she is originally a spy robot designed by a private corporation for industrial espionage, until she is reprogrammed to spy on Magari by Kankuro “Cipher” (C1PH3R) Ashiro, a former worker of the corporation who sees the goddess in her true form and vows to prove the existence of supernatural beings. When her true robotic nature is discovered, Magari, to thwart Kankuro, gives Arisa full sentience, allowing her to feel genuine emotion. After Kankuro is apprehended, Arisa quits the corporation and transfers to the school to be with those she befriended.
Gui
A small, bloblike inhabitant of the planet Ubbalia, Gui is sent to Earth to gain insights into the local paranormal occurrences. She disguises herself as a human named Ginko Nunomaki by piloting a Biomecha, a biomechanical mecha designed to resemble its pilot as a human. Like Magari and Arisa, she transfers to the school, only to discover Magari’s divine nature. After the others discover that she is an alien, they manage to teach her about life on Earth. She is stubborn in demeanor, but demonstrates willingness to learn from her mistakes and to treat others with respect and compassion.
Hachishakusama
The female yokai of Japanese urban legend, so named for her height. Hachishakusama is actually a misunderstood entity who loves children, despite her outwardly creepy behavior and bizarre priorities. She has a deep, somewhat masculine voice despite her gender, and she tends to end her sentences with the syllable “Po”, which leads to Natsuko nicknaming her “Po-chan”. Hachishakusama also has a slight tendency to make strange Freudian slips.
Gōon no Taki no Megami Kizoku
Magari’s sister and rival, who also wants a shrine of her own. Like Magari, she takes the form of a teenaged girl in order to blend into mortal society, using the alias Kin Takimoto. After contending with the group, she and Magari get on mostly good terms, and she is nicknamed “Gōon” by Ritsuko. She was born earlier than her sister, wearing vaguely Korean clothing. Her full name (轟音の滝の女神貴族) means “Goddess Noblewoman of the Roaring Waterfall”.
Kōdaina Mori no Megami
Magari and Gōon’s mother, whom the group refer to as “Kōdai”. She is a kind goddess with a vast knowledge, though she also comes off as airheaded or unconcerned over most things. When either one of her daughters is in trouble, she is tenacious; refusing to relent until she is able to help them. She has made it very clear that no matter what, she would always love her children. Kōdai lovingly revers to Magari as “Hime-chan”, and Gōon as “Kizoku-chan”. She was born during Japan’s early years, long before giving birth to Gōon and Magari. Her full name (広大な森の女神) means “Goddess Queen of the Vast Forest”.
Fēngbào Gōngjué
A Chinese dragon god, referred to as “Fēng” for short. He arrives in Japan searching for a bride, and attempts to woo Magari at Gōon’s suggestion. Similar to Magari and Gōon, he takes the form of a teenaged human boy under the alias Fèng Guang. He commands a quintet of yaoguai who, despite their annoyance with him, are extremely loyal, following his orders by oath. Arrogant and overconfident, Fēng can be very prideful, unwilling to admit to feeling hurt. Rather than simply talk things out, he instead resorts to various schemes or antics in response to a problem. His hijinks tend to annoy everyone, especially Magari. His full name (風暴公爵) means “Storm Duke”.
Shiuu
The former chief secretary of state of Gui’s birthplace, the Ubbalian capital city of Picora. Despite her position, she is disliked by some of the Ubbalian general public, as well as several members of the Ubbalian court for her underhanded nature. Whereas Gui is fluent in the many languages of Earth, Shiuu barely speaks them, thus using "pidgin" Japanese when speaking to the group. When Gui brings the others to Ubbalia, Shiuu makes attempts to trick the Ubbalians into distrusting the Earthlings, seeing them as an obstacle in her quest for power. However, her plans to dethrone the Ubbalian Queen are uncovered by the group, leading to her exile from Picora. Vowing vengeance, she and the very few Ubbalians loyal to her create her own Biomecha. Traveling to Earth, Shiuu confronts the group, but after many failed attempts to exact her revenge, Gui, taking pity on her, takes her to live in the penthouse that serves as her “headquarters” on Earth, creating the human identity of Chinese orphan Sia Yin for her. Ambitious and arrogant, Shiuu carries an extremely amiable facade of a friendly, lovable and charismatic Ubbalian, first appearing to those who don’t know her as a benign, harmless individual. This tends to work in her favor as others underestimate her and overlook the fact that she is actually a manipulative “little turd blossom”, as referred to by Magari. After meeting Fēng, the two sometimes band together to conjure various plots.
Bashira Hashizume
Another gynoid like Arisa. Designated VANESSA-2002, she was created by millionaire Ban Hashizume, who, aware of the existence of gods, aims to achieve godhood himself. When he lures the group to his mansion in order to abduct Magari to make himself a deity, Bashira is recognized as a robot by Arisa, who befriends her. Bashira later helps the group rescue Magari and turn her creator in to the authorities, and the goddess gives her a true soul on Arisa’s suggestion. Unlike Arisa, she is an AI who can exist in various compatible systems. She often inhabits one of two bodies: the main robot body in human shape, or a small stuffed doll.
