Midnight Peepshow: a horror anthology film to love
Tumblr media
Midnight Peepshow is a horror anthology film that combines several popular sub-genres, including holiday themes, dark web, and anthology. The movie is set on Valentine's Day and follows a businessman who stumbles upon a darkly magical peepshow booth that provides its clients with experiences based on their deepest fears, desires, and sins. The film is directed by Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci, and Jake West, with Vinod Malgewar and Airell Anthony Hayles serving as producers.
The movie stars Zach Galligan, who is best known for his role in Gremlins, along with Ryan Oliva, Derek Nelson, Jamie Bacon, Richard Cotton, and Mark Hampton. The cast also includes Sarah Diamond and Roisin Browne. The film is produced by GoViddo, The Haunted Cinema, and Golden Gate Motion Pictures.
Midnight Peepshow has received mixed reviews from critics. The film is praised for its strong overarching story, which is said to be the best part of the movie. However, some critics argue that the larger tale should just be there to prepare audiences for the smaller parts, and it should not stand out. The individual stories are also praised for their good moments, with the second story being a dark take on a popular game of hypotheticals and the third story featuring some of the film's creepiest visuals.
Tumblr media
However, some critics argue that the film never provides enough and always seems to pull back before going too far. The promise of sex, sin, and gore is there, but it is not as over the top as some viewers might expect. The film is described as entertaining but not the over-the-top watch that many will be expecting.
Midnight Peepshow is out on VOD and Digital, making it accessible to a wide audience. The film is a good Valentine's day-themed sadistic offering for those who enjoy horror anthologies and darker themes. It is a movie that is likely to appeal to niche-horror seeking fans who enjoy films like American Mary, May, and Excision.
In summary, Midnight Peepshow is a horror anthology film that combines several popular sub-genres, including holiday themes, dark web, and anthology. The film is set on Valentine's Day and follows a businessman who stumbles upon a darkly magical peepshow booth that provides its clients with experiences based on their deepest fears, desires, and sins. The movie is directed by Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci, and Jake West and stars Zach Galligan, Ryan Oliva, Derek Nelson, Jamie Bacon, Richard Cotton, and Mark Hampton. The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the strong overarching story and individual stories, while others argue that the film never provides enough and always seems to pull back before going too far. Despite the mixed reviews, Midnight Peepshow is a movie that is likely to appeal to niche-horror seeking fans who enjoy horror anthologies and darker themes.

Horror Movie Review: Werewolf Santa (2023)
Written and directed by Airell Anthony Hayles, Werewolf Santa is a found-footage horror as silly as it sounds, yet it lacks in both the fun and over the top departments.

THEY'RE OUTSIDE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A professor of Folklore provides context to the found footage we are about to watch. An internet celebrity psychologist's last case involves an agoraphobic woman he sought to cure. A bit of a self centered narcissist, Max learns that at the root of Sarah’s phobia is the local legend of “Green Eyes,” which she believes abducted her daughter. Max is determined to cure Sarah but the harder he pushes and deeper he probes the more he is drawn into the supernatural events of the coastal town.
REVIEW: Sam Casserly & Airell Anthony Hayles’s THEY’RE OUTSIDE is a clash of old folklore and modern technology. It’s more of a polished found footage movie as it is presented more as a mockumentary.
The premise is interesting. I found the characters and their motivations engaging. Clearly this is more about the internet psychologist, Max, then his patient, Sarah. There are dark comedic beats, or maybe what I perceived as such, in the narrative that were distracting. Likewise, the “expert” at the beginning of the film seems out of palace as the opening scene has one of the characters we’ll meet contemplating suicide. The characters lack any depth, most importantly of all Max. Even as the film moves to the climax and resolution there is no change in Max or Sarah. They enter this nightmare, something that should shock Max’s grasp on his personal reality.  Understanding that this is an independent film doesn't give the filmmakers’ a pass on their writing. The final act feels too much like a “Blair Witch” ending but there is nothing here to elicit an emotional response to the viewer. Other than his baser actions nothing has really changed. We really need to see Max unravel a bit and possibly see a glimpse or two of his humanity. The characters plateau too early and the end had no emotional impact.
The filmmakers have some excellent locations, especially footage of the local May Day celebration. They found a nice location for Sarah’s house with the deep forest encroaching on her backyard. The cinematography is a bit crisp but they manage to get some artist shots of the location. The effects are simple and they could have done a bit more to add atmosphere to the film. I thought the production designs were interesting and the illustrations for the green man were nicely done.
I was a bit shocked to see the credit for Sascha Blank for the score. I know that there was some music in the film. However, the majority of the film lacks any musical accompaniment I can recall.
I like the entire cast. They’re strong performances, but they are not multidimensional. For me, these performances might have been more effective in a short than a feature. It might have been a problem with what was on the page or possibly the direction. Each character hits their stride and never changes after that, it’s just more of the same. Actor Nick Vince is the folklorist at the beginning of the film and once that scene is played out Vince is gone from the film. His performance feels like it was an afterthought and a combination of script and improvised material.
I don’t feel that THEY’RE OUTSIDE is a bad film, but it is a flawed one. The idea of this local folklore is interesting but the premise comes up short in the execution. There is no atmosphere and the cinematography is stark, the lighting utilitarian. I like the actors yet the performances are lacking. I was engaged and vested early on but had to struggle to stay engaged with the film. There are good elements to the film that might best serve another genre or television, but doesn’t have what is required to be an engaging horror film.
