U. S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, 64 – Massachusetts Democrat
Ms. Warren is another influencial radical, second-wave feminist who thrives on irrational lies and is incapable of connecting-the-dots in order to determine the falsehoods that underpin her bizarre assumptions. And the reason? She has adopted the Marxist infused ideology of radical, second-wave feminism, as her bible.
Radical, second-wave feminism is notoriously successful at diffusing the truth, especially for women who are susceptible to their socialist way of thinking. And in 1970, Ms. Warren was that perfect young, female patsy – white, middle-class and one of the oldest female baby boomers, having been born in 1949.
Ms. Warren followed radical feminism’s handbook almost from Day 1. She married her high school sweetheart Jim Warren in 1968, just as feminism was coming of age. But soon after having her two de rigueur children, Warren began to veer away from home.
Soon after graduating from Rutgers University Law School, she began teaching law at Rutgers in 1977, divorced her inconvenient engineer husband in 1978, married another lawyer, Bruce Mann (but kept her surname) and never looked back.
Concerning her first marriage (to the now deceased Jim Warren) she would say that he was “not a bad guy.” But, it was the 1970s and she was the mom, which, thanks to radical, second-wave feminism, was no longer enough.
Later, Warren would again write about her first husband, “He had married a nineteen-year-old girl, and she hadn’t grown into the woman we had both expected. I was very, very sorry, but I couldn’t change what I had become (a radical, second-wave feminist). I was supposed to be the Betty Crocker award winner, but I set things on fire.” Typical snarky feminist remark.
Concerning her second marriage —- as soon as her Aunt Bee agreed to come and care for her two little children (so that Warren could keep teaching law), she filed for divorce. Not surprisingly, Warren was already involved with Bruce Mann. They had met earlier at a reception for a conference on law and economics in Florida.
Elizabeth Warren and Bruce Mann’s wedding day
The very timid Mann, who had never been married, was immediately smittened by the outgoing Warren and would soon begin to fly to Warren’s home on the weekends. Elizabeth Warren and Bruce Mann would be married within six months of her divorce. And, Aunt Bee? She would stay for the next 15 years.
So, in less than 10 years, Warren was transformed, by radical feminism, from a stay-at-home mom to a full-blown radical, second-wave feminist. She was the product of the feminist-imbued 1970s, jettisoning the traditional values of her Christian faith along the way and adopting radical feminism’s ideology in its place, becoming a liberated, self-centered, free-love, divorced, “career” woman instead.
According the radical feminism, Warren “had it all” – a “career” at a university that was looking for female law professors, a wimpy man (wife) waiting in the wings, and a babysitter for her inconvenient children. So now, it was truly, all-about-her.
In 1995, after having taught law at universities in Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania, the final transition to official radical, second-wave feminist would come when she began to vote Democrat. Somehow, I find it hard to believe that this was a coincidence, as she was made the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard University at the exact same time. So now, she was now a full-fledged, radical, feminist “believer.”
Scott Brown
By 2011, Warren was no longer content to spread feminist ideology, just to the young. She decided to expand her sphere of influence and enter politics. She chose to run, as a Democrat, for one of the two U.S. Senate seats in Massachusetts. This race would be against Republican Senator Scott Brown, who won a special election in 2010 to complete the remainder of the term of deceased Ted Kennedy.
Unfortunately, the highly touted Scott Brown, who was the first Republican elected to the U. S. Senate from Massachusetts since 1972, blew his credibility when he crossed party lines on many major issues. He voted for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the START Treaty and a $13 billion payroll-tax exemption for employers willing to hire unemployed workers.
Brown also voted against Republican Paul Ryan’s plan to overhaul Medicare. And then voted to support taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood and the two month extension of unemployment benefits.  All of which a majority of Republicans, especially the leadership, opposed. As a result, Brown’s strong support from the Tea Party, in his 2010 bid for Kennedy’s seat, all but disappeared and Warren won the 2012 election by a margin of 53% to 47%.
Former Republican Senator from Massachusetts – Scott Brown
Elizabeth Warren and her husband Bruce Mann
Warren’s campaign would begin to expose her devious nature and her inability to stick with the truth.
1.  It began with her daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi’s, efforts to manipulate the race. Her company, Demos.org sued the state of Massachusetts to enforce the National Voter Registration Act. The state settled and mailed voter registration forms to welfare recipients. Sen. Brown claimed this was done to boost Democrat voter numbers and to increase the turnout for Warren.

2.  Then it was revealed that she had lied on employment forms and law teaching directories when she claimed to have Native American (Cherokee and Delaware) ancestry on her mother’s (Pauline Reed Herring) side of the family. It would soon be shown that her claims were based only on family lore and that there was no documentation, or evidence, to prove her assertions. In fact, no one who attended her mother’s funeral in 1995, or her three older brothers, or her two children have come forward to corroborate Ms. Warren’s, “I’m a minority. Give me special treatment”, story.
3.  Warren also took liberties with the truth when she claimed to be the “first nursing mother to take a bar exam in the state of New Jersey.” Oh please. How pathetic that she resorts to fabrications on this low level. She reminds me of Texas gubernatorial candidate Sen. Wendy Davis’s pathetic pattern of inconsequential lies.
4.  Once elected, Warren’s one-sided, radical, second-wave feminist views on capitalism, and the Christian businessmen whose monumental efforts sustain it, would continue to color her politics when she was quoted as saying – “You Didn’t Built It.”
“I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever.’ No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own — nobody. You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police-forces and fire-forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory — and hire someone to protect against this — because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea. God bless — keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is, you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”
Obviously, every American is provided with those same “advantages” and yet very few men are capable of creating a thriving, successful business. And their success has nothing to do with the roads and everything to do with the talent, tenacity, trustworthiness, character, ambition, honesty and the drive each man brings to his business every day! Only a radical, second-wave feminist, who has been trained to abhor strong men in general, and strong, successful, Christian men in particular, could come to such an outlandish, irrational, and socialist conclusion.
Bill Gates – Microsoft
Donald Trump
Steve Jobs – Apple
5.  Now lets talk about Warren’s minimum wage IQ. I can’t even decipher her twisted views on this topic. But basically she thinks that the minimum wage should be around $22.00 per hour, based on “economic developments” since the 1960s. And since it’s only $7.25, she claims the missing $14.75 was “stolen” by those baaaadd male employers. If you want to torture yourself with her reasoning, click here Realclearpolitics.com
Larry Summers
6.  Now let’s move on to why the Catholic Church will never allow women to become priests. Simply put, women can’t keep a confidence. And Ms. Warren’s stunning, and naive revelation, about her conversation with Larry Summers, shows that she doesn’t even know enough to keep a confidence (given to her as a newbie) by very big “insider”. The very same Larry Summers, who at the time was the director of the National Economic Council and a top economic adviser to President Obama. She wrote the following in her book:
“After dinner, “Larry leaned back in his chair and offered me some advice. I had a choice. I could be an insider or I could be an outsider. Outsiders can say whatever they want. But people on the inside don’t listen to them. Insiders, however, get lots of access and a chance to push their ideas. People — powerful people — listen to what they have to say. But insiders also understand one unbreakable rule: They don’t criticize other insiders.”
Granted, I’m not the least bit impressed with Mr. Summers legacy, but, as a Progressive, Ms. Warren should be. So, why did she do it?
Well, being a feminist first, this deliberate betrayal has to have its roots in radical feminism once again. Hummm? But, of course! This Larry Summers is the very same Larry Summers who was ousted as President of Harvard (while Ms. Warren was employed there) because he had the unmitigated gall to speak the truth about the statistical disparity between men and women and their mathematical abilities. This is what he said while speaking at the National Bureau of Economic Research conference in 2005:
“It does appear that on many, many different human attributes—height, weight, propensity for criminality, overall IQ, mathematical ability, scientific ability—there is relatively clear evidence that whatever the difference in means—which can be debated—there is a difference in the standard deviation, and variability of a male and a female population.”
Remember, radical feminists are feminists first and foremost and they reserve their greatest ire for those who refuse to maintain the smoke screen of lies surrounding their ideology, especially when it comes to the radical feminist high jinx, concerning the “equality of the sexes.” Mr. Summers overlooked this little detail and now we know why Warren threw him under the bus.
7.  Now for her claim that interest rates on government issued student loans are “morally wrong.” Despite Ms. Warren’s claim that she is a consumer finance expert, she fails to connect the dots on the simple fact that if the kids, who take out the loans, don’t pay something for the privilege, the taxpayers will have to pick up the slack! AGAIN! Considering the fact that, even with the kids interest payments included, the government’s student loan “program” is already one billion dollars in debt, Warren’s comment is upside-down, off-the-charts, socialist, STUPID!
8. In her misguided efforts to get the minimum wage raised again, Warren tweeted that it “no longer keeps a mom and her baby out of poverty.” What? It never kept single mothers (aka. radical feminists) out of poverty because it was never intended to support a mother and her children. Moms and their children are not a viable economic unit under any circumstances. That’s why God invented fathers! The minimum wage was originally intended for entry-level jobs for unskilled teenagers, period. And for Warren to claim otherwise is just plain dishonest (something at which she excels).
Sen. Elizabeth Warren
It is rumored that Warren is considering a run for the Presidency in 2016. She better reconsider because there’s just too many of her own quotes to use against her. Shall we continue?
The following is a list of more preposterous quotes from Warren which were put together by thedailybanter.com in 2013.
1. “People feel like the system is rigged against them, and here is the painful part, they’re right. The system is rigged.” (It is rigged against average people – by politicians like radical feminist, and socialist, Elizabeth Warren. kqd)
2. “If there had been a Financial Product Safety Commission in place 10 years ago, the current financial crisis would have been averted.” (OMG. What a simpleton. The financial crisis was deliberately caused by financial ditz’ s Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Barney Frank (Heads of Federal Banking Committee) who relaxed the banking regs which caused a feeding frenzy in the industry.kqd)
Sen. Chuck Schumer, 64 NY
Sen. Chris Dodd – Conn, (D)
Rep. Barney Frank – Mass. (D)
3. “You built a factory out there, good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads that the rest of us paid for. You hired workers that the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.” (Duh, again. kqd)
4. “Look around. Oil companies guzzle down the billions in profits. Billionaires pay a lower tax rate than their secretaries, and Wall Street CEOs, the same ones the direct our economy and destroyed millions of jobs still strut around Congress, no shame, demanding favors, and acting like we should thank them. Does anyone here have a problem with that?” (WHAT? Radical feminist ideology again. Capitalists don’t destroy jobs, they create them!!! Plus, they are the primary supply line for the taxes on which the government functions! What an arrogant dope! kqd)
75,000 employees
255,000 employees
4,700 gas stations
5. “I do not understand how it is that financial institutions could think that they could take taxpayer money and then turn around and act like it’s business as usual. I don’t understand how they can’t see that the world has changed in a fundamental way, that it is not business as usual when you take taxpayer dollars.” (Well, maybe this would be true, if it weren’t for the fact that the incompetent, meddling GOVERNMENT REGULATORS initiated the meltdown that the banking industry endured. kqd)
Sen. Chuck Schumer, 64 NY
Sen. Chris Dodd – Conn, (D)
Rep. Barney Frank – Mass. (D)
Mitt Romney – Former Massachusetts Governor, Christian and co-founder of Bain Capitol Investment Firm
6. “Mitt Romney is the guy who said corporations are people. No, Governor Romney, corporations are not people.” (OK. I’m not even going to respond to this totally absurd comment. kqd)
7. “You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything in your factory and hire someone to protect against this because of the work the rest of us did.” (A repeat. For radical, second-wave feminists, the “battle” never ends – radical feminist vs. Christian men, over and over again. kqd)
8. “In a democracy, hostage tactics are the last resort for those who can’t win their fights through elections, can’t win their fights in Congress, can’t win their fights for the presidency, and can’t win their fights in the courts. For this right-wing minority, hostage taking is all they have left, a last gasp for those who cannot cope with the realities of our democracy.” (Hostage tactics? Cannot cope with the realities of our democracy? Come on. I don’t think so. Warren and her ilk are the ones who are trashing democracy. It’s very difficult to win when the system is rigged against the productive Christian businessmen, by influential lesbian-led, radical, second-wave feminists, like political hack Ms. Warren, and her socialist cohorts, who are in cahoots with atheists like the vindictive, litigious Atty. Mikey Weinstein. It’s time for Christian men to FIGHT BACK. kqd)
9. “If you’re caught with an ounce of cocaine, the chances are good you’re going to jail….Evidently, if you launder nearly a billion dollars for drug cartels and violate our international sanctions, your company pays a fine and you go home and sleep in your own bed at night.” (Only if he’s, i.e. a friend of Democrat Eric Holder/Bill Clinton. kqd)
Eric Holder
Bill Clinton
Marc Rich
10. “Nobody’s safe. Health insurance? That didn’t protect 1 million Americans who were financially ruined by illness or medical bills last year.” (OMG! Alert! Alert! Nobody’s safe! – The truth is that nobody’s safe because radical, second-wave feminist Elizabeth Warren is roaming the halls of Congress and, the truth is, she knows EXACTLY what she’s up to! Beware. If the Christian men don’t stop her soon, she’ll throw us all under the bus! kqd) Current EVEntS – Radical, Second-Wave Feminist Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Mass (D) – Just Doesn’t Get It, or Does She? U. S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, 64 - Massachusetts Democrat Ms. Warren is another influencial radical, second-wave feminist who thrives on irrational lies and is incapable of connecting-the-dots in order to determine the falsehoods that underpin her bizarre assumptions.

Fighting Big Pharma: Business Leaders, Social Justice Organizations, Public Health Experts & Internet Freedom Activists Have PharmacyChecker’s Back
In America, tens of millions of people are skipping necessary medications because the prices are too high. PharmacyChecker exists to help people, mostly Americans, find prescription drug safety and savings information on the Internet. Founded in 2002, our greatest accomplishment is verifying and identifying the safest international online pharmacies, sites that process orders filled by licensed pharmacies in Canada and different countries that require a prescription. We’re bestknown for comparing drug prices among properly credentialed online pharmacies.
This week the Business Leaders for Health Care Transformation (BLHCT) sent a letter to the CEO of Microsoft, signed by over 1,100 business owners, CEOs, and entrepreneurs and nearly 40 non-profit organizations:
“We do not all believe that having to personally import prescription medicines, using online pharmacies or otherwise, is the best solution for high drug prices in America, but we all recognize that it can be done safely and is a lifeline for many. To that effect, PharmacyChecker plays a valuable role in protecting consumers’ safety.”
The elephant in the room here: personal importation of prescription drugs is technically illegal under most circumstances. We get that. Still, millions of Americans buy medications from other countries each year, often online, because of cost and they are never prosecuted for doing so. Here’s the thing: We don’t sell medication, process or distribute prescription drugs in any manner. We verify and provide information. Period.
What’s up with the letter to Microsoft? What do they have to do with any of this?
In late 2018, things really went too far. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) added our website, www.pharmacychecker.com, to a list of “Not Recommended Sites,” an initiative initially funded by drug company giant Pfizer, ostensibly to help fight rogue online pharmacies and counterfeit drugs online. They even added PharmacyCheckerBlog.com to the list, a website where I write about policy and politics relating to drug prices, online pharmacies, and importation. That list mostly includes some really bad sites selling drugs, real and fake, mostly without requiring a prescription. We don’t belong on it and we sued NABP and other groups that we believe are funded by or allied with drug companies: Partnership for Safe Medicines, Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies, Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies and LegitScript.
Microsoft relies on the NABP’s list to place red, scary looking pop-up warnings on its search engine Bing against sites on that list. In other words, when people search for PharmacyChecker on Bing, they are warned against us and the click to our site is blocked. BLHCT’s letter states:
“Mr. Nadella, for the sake of public health, free speech, and fairness to American consumers who cannot afford their medications, take down the censorious warning on Bing against PharmacyChecker.com.”
Why does Big Pharma not like PharmacyChecker?
While we’re small, our very existence and message threatens the pharmaceutical industry’s greedy profit model and exposes its lies about prescription drug importation. Prescription drug importation, when orders are placed online and filled by licensed pharmacies that require a prescription, is not dangerous. Buying counterfeit medications and/or controlled drugs without a prescription online is. There’s a huge difference but one that the industry has probably spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to conflate for almost 20 years. One of my best articulations of this baloney was published in the NY Times in 2014.
For an objective treatment of this issue, please see: Personal medicine importation: What are the risks, and how can they be mitigated?
Thank you BLHCT!
In the Trenches to Lower Drug Prices
I have been fighting misinformation and lies by the drug companies for what is now approaching two decades. And I wholeheartedly agree with BLHCT that personal drug importation is not “the answer” to our drug prices problem. I started a non-profit organization called Prescription Justice that is dedicated to a future America where drug prices are lower and the need to go online for lower prices in other countries is greatly reduced. We’ll get there…
BLHCT and other others who backed this letter gave us much-needed back up. BLHCT believes that our employer-based health care system is broken. And, for the record, I agree. They know that drug prices are a big part of the problem and that the pharmaceutical industry is capable of the most egregious behavior to make sure America remains its captive marketplace. They understand exactly how wrong Microsoft is to cooperate with them.
Other organizations that signed the letter include:
Social Security Works
Electronic Frontier Foundation
Treatment Action Group
Prescription Justice
JustCare USA
People’s Pharmacy
Unfinished Business Foundation
Hunger Free America
American Sustainable Business Council
Notable individual signers include:
Stephen Salant, Economics Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan
Roger Bate, PhD (formerly of the American Enterprise Institute)
Monique Morrissey, PhD, Economist, Economic Policy Institute

FORD
The Ford Motor Company (commonly referred to simply as "Ford") is an American multinational automaker headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand and most luxury cars under the Lincoln brand. Ford also owns Brazilian SUV manufacturer, Troller, and Australian performance car manufacturer FPV. In the past, it has also produced tractors and automotive components. Ford owns an 8% stake in Aston Martin of the United Kingdom,[needs update] and a 49% stake in Jiangling of China[citation needed]. It also has a number of joint-ventures, one in China (Changan Ford), one in Taiwan (Ford Lio Ho), one in Thailand (AutoAlliance Thailand), one in Turkey (Ford Otosan), and one in Russia (Ford Sollers). It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is controlled by the Ford family, although they have minority ownership (but majority of the voting power).
Ford introduced methods for large-scale manufacturing of cars and large-scale management of an industrial workforce using elaborately engineered manufacturing sequences typified by moving assembly lines; by 1914, these methods were known around the world as Fordism. Ford's former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford owned the Swedish automaker Volvo from 1999 to 2010.[5] In 2011, Ford discontinued the Mercury brand, under which it had marketed entry-level luxury cars in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East since 1938.
During the financial crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, it was close to bankruptcy, but it has since returned to profitability. Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based automaker (preceded by General Motors) and the fifth-largest in the world (behind Toyota, VW, Hyundai-Kia and General Motors) based on 2015 vehicle production. At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth largest automaker in Europe. Ford is the eighth-ranked overall American-based company in the 2010 Fortune 500 list, based on global revenues in 2009 of $118.3 billion.[8] In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million automobiles[9] and employed about 213,000 employees at around 90 plants and facilities worldwide. The company went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still retain 40 percent voting rights.

Wacker Drive, Chicago (No. 2)
In 1909, architects Daniel Burnham and Edward H. Bennett drew up a plan for the Commercial Club of Chicago to unify the city's urban design and increase its physical beautification. The improvement of traffic flow in Chicago was a major part of the plan. Among its many recommendations was a double-decked roadway along the river, intended to relieve the congestion at River Street and Rush Street, where 50% of the city's north–south traffic crossed the Chicago River. Charles H. Wacker, chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission, pushed the idea.
The original double-decker road, replacing South Water and River Streets, was completed in 1926 at a cost of $8 million and named after Charles Wacker. The 1926 section stretched from Lake Street to Michigan Avenue, the latter of which was also rebuilt into a two-level road.
An extension south to Congress Parkway and Harrison Street was built between 1948 and 1954, replacing Market Street (after the Market Stub of the elevated Lake Street Line was removed). Extensions east were built in 1963 and 1975, with the latter taking it to Lake Shore Drive, and a new lower level starting at Stetson Avenue. At the time, Lake Shore Drive had an S-curve at the river, running where Wacker now goes between Field Boulevard and current Lake Shore Drive. This S-curve was on a viaduct over the Illinois Central Railroad's rail yard, and was at the level of Upper Wacker; the middle and lower levels dead-ended at that point. The current alignment of Lake Shore Drive was finished in 1986, and in 1987 Middle Wacker was extended to meet the new alignment. The ramps to bring upper traffic down had already been built; upper has been dead-ended where it used to end at Lake Shore Drive.
In 2001–2002, Wacker Drive was redesigned and reconstructed between Michigan Avenue and Lake Street.  The original upper deck was crumbling, and the entire roadway did not meet modern standards for road widths and clearances.  Using a specially-developed "flat-slab, longitudinally post-tensioned, reinforced, high-performance concrete cast-in-place system", the new road deck was expected to have a lifespan of 75–100 years. Walkways along the river were meant to make the drive more pedestrian-friendly, while restoration of historic limestone elements and reproduction lighting evoked the drive's original 1926 appearance.  The 20-month, $200-million project was completed on time and within budget.
In spring of 2010, work commenced on rebuilding the north-south section of Wacker, from Randolph Street to Congress Parkway, including the upper and lower levels.  This is a continuation of the Revive Wacker Drive project started in 2001.
Wacker is the only street to intersect both State Street (the east–west center line) and Madison Street (the north–south center line), although Lake Shore Drive and LaSalle Street/Drive also each cross both dividing lines.
In April 2014, The American Council of Engineering Companies awarded the Wacker Drive and Congress Parkway Reconstruction project its Grand Conceptor Award. The project team was led by TranSystems and included roadway, bridge and tunnel improvement work. The project involved complex staging to keep 135,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians moving through the construction zone each day.

To Fuel Inclusive Entrepreneurship, Give Communities a Voice
May 6, 2020

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
The pathway for entrepreneurs is frequently filled with roadblocks, especially for women and people of color.  But employing community-driven solutions to shape public policy can help overcome barriers to many of these entrepreneurs’ successes. To find solutions that work, it’s incredibly important that ideas for development are shaped within communities, instead of from outsiders purporting to understand a community’s perspective and needs.
Community engagement is key
Girls for Technology is one of my favorite examples.  It was started by Sabrina Tucker-Barrett, who worked for an insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut, where she became concerned that local insurers struggled to find qualified workers largely because the school system wasn’t training students for the quality jobs available.
She formed Girls for Technology and began working with local schools to offer STEM-related programming to encourage and prepare young women to be leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Last fall, four Hartford high school students who had participated in the Girls for Technology afterschool program pitched an extraordinary invention to Facebook executives in Menlo Park, California.
It all began when the girls in the afterschool program were challenged to create a chat-bot that addressed a community concern. A month later, the students, Elyece Patterson, Natalie Best, Chelsea Cranford, and Angelique Phillips, invented a computer program called “Eboni” that helps African American youth prepare for their first jobs. It relays information on workplace attire, hairstyle, and demeanor.  Their idea, inspired by the community program, won a Facebook “Best Social Impact Award.”
Throughout the country, community-based organizations and programs are recognizing the need to invest time and resources into helping underserved entrepreneurs. These are people with big ideas for scalable businesses and the potential for expanding markets, but they require outside investment to establish themselves and grow.
Entrepreneur activities are increasing across the country, but government, philanthropy, and the private sector must step up efforts to make the entrepreneur environment more inclusive and ensure everyone is welcomed, respected, and valued. Only with equitable treatment and access to opportunity can women and people of color reach their full capacity in the nation’s economy.

Access to capital is a huge hurdle
A primary concern for these entrepreneurs is access to capital. The wealth gap demonstrates that African Americans and Latinos have fewer financial resources than whites, so when it comes to financing their dreams they are disadvantaged.  (For example, recent U.S. census data revealed that black wealth is 7% of whites’.) In fact, financing is a challenge for all entrepreneurs: Venture Capitalists reject 98-99 percent of the ideas they are presented because they don’t meet their criteria for funding, or other subjective reasons.
Entrepreneurs often turn to their savings or family, friends, and networks for funding. Women and especially minorities don’t often have access to networks of wealth and social capital or simply don’t know how to navigate. This fact makes it even harder to get ideas out of the garage.
There are a small number of community-created sources for startup capital. Detroit has two notable organizations – Michigan Women Forward, started by 30 Michigan women in 1986, and ProsperUS. Both are sources of microfinancing for new and very small businesses with a focus on helping minority entrepreneurs. (To date, ProsperUS has allocated 93% of its loans to minority-owned businesses.) But these two are the exception, not the rule; the nation needs many more locally created sources of this type.
Technical knowledge is a valuable currency, too
For those entrepreneurs skilled enough to chart a course forward, another hurdle is developing the tactical and technical knowledge to launch and run their startup. Entrepreneurs need know-how on everything from fleshing out a business plan to bookkeeping and recruiting investors. Technical assistance is almost as valuable for entrepreneurs as capital.
That is why it is heartening to see community-based organizations and programs banding together with entrepreneurs to provide the resources they need.  In Connecticut, as well as across the country, entrepreneurs are being assisted with strong mentorship, seed capital, working space, and professional expertise.  It’s making a difference.

Partnerships are critical
The Women’s Business Development Council supports women entrepreneurs across Connecticut with workshops, one-on-one coaching, and training programs.  In just five years, The Refinery has mentored 39 companies and helped raise more than $30 million in funds for women and diverse entrepreneurs.
Collab New Haven, an incubator/accelerator, is providing funding, mentoring, and education to entrepreneurs, focusing primarily on minority-and women-owned startups. Build Institute in Detroit exemplifies what’s happening across the country – since 2012, more than 1,800 aspiring entrepreneurs have graduated from their classes, which providws them with tools, resources, and a support network.
Part of what makes these organizations successful is their understanding of entrepreneurs and their communities. Local, state, and federal governments have significant resources that can be used to assist entrepreneurs, but a partnership within the community is essential for success. The same is true for the private sector.
Why is this kind of collaboration important?
Successful entrepreneurial ventures in high-growth industries can account for half the new jobs created in a metropolitan area. But for that kind of activity to happen in communities of color, we must make more of an investment in developing community-based programs and solutions that enable entrepreneurship and innovation.
That’s the inclusive economic development story we should all want to tell.

SmartNews’ local news feature now covers more than 6,000 U.S. cities

SmartNews’ local news feature now covers more than 6,000 U.S. cities
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SmartNews, the news aggregation app that hit unicorn funding last year, has spent the last year growing its local news feature. With the United States presidential election underscoring both the importance of local news and its challenges, SmartNews has a huge opportunity to gain new users.
In early 2019, SmartNews had 40 local partners. Over the past year, it has expanded that to publishers in over 6,000 cities, with the goal of covering the majority of the U.S. population. The app also currently has an election news section, with live updates on primary results and sections focused on each presidential candidate.
For local media, apps like SmartNews and competitor Flipboard, which recently launched its own local news feature, offer less reliance on search traffic for much-needed traffic and revenue. A Pew Research survey published last year found that while most American adults believe it’s important for journalists to be engaged with local communities, only about 14% said they have paid for local news, with many citing the availability of free content as the primary reason why.
Both local and election news are presented as tabs in the SmartNews’ main navigation menu and the company says the Local News tab, which shows headlines personalized by user location, now drives almost as much engagement to publishers as the default Top News tab.
Founded eight years ago in Japan, where it is now one of the top news apps, SmartNews launched its American version in 2014. The app’s content team, including former journalists, screen publishers before they are added to its platform, but articles shown to users are picked by machine learning. Over the past few years, as the political and media landscape in America becomes increasingly polarized, SmartNews has focused on discovery tools with the goal of breaking readers out of “filter bubbles” reinforced by social media algorithms.
For example, last year it launched a feature called News From All Sides, a slider that displays headlines about the same topic from publications across the political spectrum.
For the Election News tab, the slider was adapted for news about each presidential candidate. When it originally launched, the slider had five sections, but that has been pared down to three, with the goal of encouraging people to explore more news sources instead of focusing on how they are labeled, said Jeannie Yang, SmartNews’ senior vice president of product.
“I think one of the improvements we made is that it’s not exactly about getting it ‘right,’ quote-unquote, but about how do you let people explore the spectrum and actually be able to understand it without feeling they are locked in,” she told TechCrunch.
While working on its local news and election news features, more than fifty people from SmartNews, including Yang, head of global growth Fabian-Pierre Nicolas and members of its engineering, product, data and marketing teams, traveled through Minnesota and Iowa. More recently they drove through Nevada and California, with Michigan and Florida next on the itinerary. These “listening tours” were inspired by trips SmartNews Ken Suzuki and its other co-founders made through the United States in 2016, to connect with potential users of the app.
“It is meant to get us out of our bubble, since our main [U.S.] offices are in Palo Alto, San Francisco and New York and build empathy with how people connect to the news and the app,” said Nicolas. The team sent out surveys on Craigslist and went to places like cafes and churches to ask people about a wide range of issues, including politics, how they get election and local news and their communities.
A lot of people they talked to rely on TV or radio for most of their news. If they browse online, they often use their desktop computers instead of smartphones because of costly or limited data plans. Many said they had issues finding reliable local news sources, especially as more publications are purchased by larger outlets. Articles may no longer focus on their communities, for example, or they have to sort through more sponsored content and opinion pieces to get to news.
To ensure the quality of news sources on its platform, SmartNews’ content team screens publications first and partners with local news publishers, like McClatchy. The content each users sees in their Local News tab is based on their location. The app prioritizes neighborhood news first, then brings in news from next-largest administrative area.
For example, if a reader lives near a large city, SmartNews will display headlines from newspapers published there. If they live in a less densely populated area, it will show articles from newspapers in their county. In the future, the Local News tab may also include information from other sources, including local deals, crime and safety incidents or city council agendas.
SmartNews is taking advantage of election season to get more readers, with marketing campaigns that include running commercials during debates. The app’s goal is to convert them into long-term users and be the first news app that people go to on their phones. In turn, Nicolas said, they hope this will create a healthier media ecosystem by giving local publishers an additional source of inbound traffic to monetize.
