Yuletidings 2011: Reindeer Games

1. Rudolfiana:  Thirty-four minutes of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'' as performed in mind-bending variety by (In order of appearance): The Temptations, Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra, Los Lonely Boys, The Melodeers. Jack Johnson, Peach Hips, Ray Charles, Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband, Straight No Chaser, The Asylum Street Spankers, A.B. Green, Yvonne Norman, Chris Isaak and The Rev. Horton Heat.

2. Reindeer Games:  A seemingly endless but in reality only four-and-a-half minute instrumental “Rudolph” collision, featuring (again in order of appearance): Tuck Andress, Eddie Layton, Los Straitjackets, The Big Band of Billy May, John Bayless, Sy Mann, Don Patterson, The Gypsy Hombres, Ira Ironstrings, a music box, The U.S. Arm Band, Lawrence Welk and His Champagne Music Makers, Urbie Green, Soda, Andre Kostelanetz, The Three Suns, a carousel organ, Roy Smeck and NRBQ.

This is, for now at least, the last of my forays into “supercut” montages*: 34 minutes of vocal versions of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, followed by a 4:30 instrumental edit as a so-called bonus.  You get Motown, polka, rock, doo-wop, singer-songwriter, Japanese pop, funk, a kind of calypso/bluegrass hybrid, a cappella, blues, and lots more.  

To be honest, “Rudolfiana” is just a bunch of wildly disparate versions of the song all strung together, and as such is pleasant enough, but I think “Reindeer Games” is a pretty good job of editing and a lot of fun to listen to.

Testing the Turntable, she flipped over in the back of my truck coming home, I had to drag the console out of the back of the shed that has been broken into and looted. This old girl is tuff as nails. She still plays, both the radio and the turntable. I cannot believe how many times I have had to save this stereo, from a foreclosed home to a looted shed. My life is a nightmare, but my Curtis Mathes is a blessing.
