Drag Racing: Drag Racing is the loudest thing I have ever experienced in my entire life. No, I'm not exaggerating, it is stupidly loud. When we first got there, we went up to the stands to watch the races and we didn't have earplugs on, oh boy did we regret that, my ears were hurting the rest of the day. John Rafteseth and his 1996 drag car:

If 8.67 seconds at 161 mph sounds both fast and quick, you’re right. Big John was from Lawrenceville, GA and laid down these numbers at the 2008 Southern Super Heavy Shootout held at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA in a 4,200 lb twin turbo beast with a 419 ci engine built by Bill Brady Racing Engines. Back in 2005 he ran 11.921 seconds at 113.59 mph at the Mountain MadneSS race coming in second in the Super Pro class. A similar twin-turbo 1996 Impala SS drag race car is the 10.5 second 400 ci LSX powered 2,048 hp made under the direction of Mike Copeland of GM Performance Division. Based on the #7 pilot-build car for the 1996 model year it still has VIN tag 0007. He was one of the original members of the Southeast Impala Lovers (SEIL) which later morphed into the GASSIT Impala SS club.

Originally used for “validation testing” at GM's Desert Proving Ground in Arizona, before it ended up at the Milford Michigan Proving Ground test site to be worked over by Thomson Automotive and Vanishing Point Race Cars. It wears a coat of Corvette Atomic Orange paint and was in Super Chevy Magazine’s January 2010 issue. Runners up in the speed and grace category would have to be Glen Koenig and his LS-6 461 ci powered 1996 that ran 10.37 at 130 mph and Jorge Perez-Gurri's very fast 1996 Impala SS that made a 10.1 second run at 136 mph, or was that 9.9? Big John passed away July 4th, 2020 taken from us by a heart attack in Louisiana.
