She Never Died (2019)
Tumblr media
Sometimes, I overthink movies. In the Canadian film She Never Died, I saw a slave-turned supernatural avenger/superhero story set in modern times. Some not-so-subtle clues throughout make it pretty clear the casting of a black woman in the lead was more coincidental than symbolic. At worst, it means director Audrey Cummings made a film that isn't as airtight as it should be and leaves the audience with a few more unanswered questions than intended. At best, it means the production team really was color-blind when casting the film, which is a great thing. As for the movie itself, its limited budget shows at times but the central mystery kept me intrigued.
Detective Godfrey (Peter MacNeill) has been following the trail of a serial killer who has been leaving the bodies of women - sans fingers - across the city. He suspects the murders are tied to a crime organization specializing in human trafficking and snuff films led by Terrance (Noah Dalton Danby). When he witnesses a homeless woman (Olunike Adeliyi as Lacey) leave Terrance’s studio unphased despite a bullet in the head, he pursues her for answers.
Going into the film cold and never having heard of 2015's He Never Died, also penned by Jason Krawczyk, also about an immortal cannibal with divine ties. It took me a while to orient myself. Lacey’s initial appearance, droning voice, apparent inability to control her actions, visions of a mysterious man in a top hat (Lawrence Gowan) and her cannibalistic urges led me to believe her a Voodoo zombie. The scenes of women chained and ready to be sold at auction certainly helped but this isn’t trying to draw parallels between modern-day sex trafficking and America's history of slavery. Actually, the supernatural elements are somehow tied to angels, demons and the apocalypse.
I like this movie better than Audrey Cumming’s previous effort, Darken. There are moments of comedy throughout and when the film dips its toes into the horror genre, the gore and violence are satisfying. Halfway through, Lacey meets Suzzie (Kiana Madeira) and the actresses make a great pair. Either are more interesting than Peter MacNeill’s police officer, who under reacts to everything he sees and never calls for backup, which makes him seem pretty stupid. Numerous characters nonchalantly react to big events.
She Never Died ends with a promise of more to come and I hope it does. The film has rough spots and with only half an ending, this film's watchability strongly depends on us actually getting a sequel. For now, there are moments where the acting is not all there and the story focuses on the wrong character but the leads are good, the amount of blood spilled is satisfying, and the humor well-balanced. Audrey Cummings continues to grow as a filmmaker. I’m looking forward to what’s coming next in the careers of everyone involved. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 1, 2019)

The sensation of a successful tasting. When the reflection of her bright red hair reminds the glow of an amber whisky, When her smooth and delicate skin evokes the finesse of a scotch malt, Then the brightness of her gaze will take control and you won’t be able to stop… Just Keep Walking
