Miss Meadows (2014)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miss Meadows. The first film I'm posting about after literal years. I wanted to get back into doing this for the fun. The original goal may not have been met, but I like this method of watching movies. It helps me focus on what's happening... That said, this movie started interesting and fun and slooowly went downhill. Her entire relationship with the Sheriff? Awkward. So painfully awkward. The writing was not great. Not taking points off for the writing was extremely generous of me. But I had fun watching it, to be fair... that said... ESE: -10/100
50 +2 for immediately CGI squirrel +5 for living your best tap dancing life -10 for creepy-ass dudes harassing women +5 for Miss Meadows attempting politeness in the face of grossness +2 for tiny purse gun +10 for "Toodaloo" post-murder +5 for post-murder tap dance +3 for the quick return of CGI squirrel +3 for Mother Meadows giving bloodstain cleaning advice -10 for only God knowing our destiny +5 for the exception of no one knowing their destiny being best-selling authors +5 for "The truth is relative." +5 for Ava Kolker +5 for Heather thinking corpses look like string cheese -10 for the principal's shitty attitude -5 for new neighbors trying to hook you up with dentist friends +5 for having "no intentions to start domestication training" +10 for saving a toad on the road -10 for constant tap shoes +5 for Heather's healthy skepticism +5 for admitting being wrong -10 for being far too young to hate the world so much +5 for a child being smart enough to see the world for what it is -5 for not finishing her answer to the teachers who invited her for Happy Hour -5 for incredibly awkward exchange with the Sheriff -10 for using your position to find a woman's workplace to ask her on a date +10 for Miss Meadows pointing out that that behavior is illegal -5 for not allowing the Sheriff a turn to ask questions, turning the conversation into an interrogation +5 for not promising not to laugh +5 for wanting to play accordion -5 for tap dancing on grass +5 for the Sheriff's rhythmically challenged dance -10 for awkward post-kiss silence +5 for not living in fear -10 for church service +10 for Katie Holmes's singing +10 for not being Catholic, but enjoying singing in choirs +5 for James Badge Dale -10 for the most awkward sex scene I have ever watched -10 because no... seriously... When Sydney to the Max Was First Announced I Wound Up Very Surprised
Tumblr media
I will still remember the day I first saw the announcement for the new Disney Channel series: Sydney to the Max. I was doing a Google search to see what the actors from my former favorite Disney Channel show: Girl Meets World were up to. Then I saw this article that announced a father/daughter sitcom was coming to the channel. I saw the image above which featured Ava Kolker and immediately thought the show was going to be about her, and that the other girl in the photo was going to be just the best friend.
Then I read the article for a minute, and I realized... wait, the other girl is going to be the lead!? Wait. Disney Channel is really doing a show focused on a biracial girl and her white parent!?! I know it doesn't seem like a big deal to some, but I will forever feel bad for assuming from one picture alone that the white girl had to be the lead, just because the father and grandmother are white.
As I began to watch the series, I was fascinated to see if Sydney was indeed going to be Max's biracial daughter, or adopted. Either way, I was happy to see Disney Channel give more representation to all types of families, and portray it as simply normal. I of course was definitely pleased though when the show eventually confirmed Sydney was definitely Max's biological daughter.
However I remember later in Season 3, Sydney mentioned once that some neighbors thought she was adopted... like she didn't technically belong to her father. That line broke my heart... only because I once thought the same. Again, I still feel totally bad inside that from one image alone, I thought that only the white girl could be the daughter of the white dad, rather than a beautiful biracial girl like Ruth Righi.
I will forever be grateful to a show like Sydney to the Max that broke cultural and societal expectations, and wound up giving us such a beautiful show about such a beautiful family... and showed us that initial judgments can pale in comparison to the actual reality.

GMW ("Girl Meets the Great Lady of New York") - Ava in full Carmen Miranda duds was bad, but having Ava Kolker in brown face as Marisol for the gag at the end was worse. They also made a 9 year old white girl look like an adult Latina street walker.
I actually thought the sequence and the little dance she made was hilarious, and I didn’t notice her face being too brown or anything, but I understand why people can be offended and think it’s bad. But I disagree on the last part. I don’t think it was that bad, though I’m not Latina myself or adult, so I don’t know how much it can affect people to see a nine year old actress play someone dressed up like that. I’m not even a person of color, so really, don’t take any offense from what I’m saying!
I absolutely respect your opinion, I get where you’re coming from, and thank you for the ask!

hey! I dont know what this ask is in relation to because I post a lot and I don't remember this episode so I will have to take your word for it.
Girl Meets World consistently missed the mark. The plots were often underwhelming, unnecessary, or cheap.
In comparison, I consistently appreciated Boy Meets World for its plots and characterisations. It had times where it was also underwhelming, unnecessary, and cheap, but it also had a lot of meaningful plots.
However, even though I like Boy Meets World for certain reasons and Girl Meets World doesn't really cross my mind much, I also acknowledge that these shows lacked positive diversity and were often ignorant and bigoted - specifically regarding their characters.
The brownface plot on Girl Meets World that you mentioned is very much not okay. Girl Meets World also regularly showed their only Black character as criminalistic. Their only neurodiverse character(s?) were the butt of hundreds of jokes and then their neurodivergence was washed away and never mentioned again as they behaved in more neurotypical ways. These are just some off the top of my head.
Boy Meets World had very few (if any) BIPOC, neurodivergent characters, disabled characters, and LGBTQ+ characters. The only one I can recall off the top of my head was Angela, a Black woman who was honestly treated really poorly throughout the series and was a token Black Woman for them.
Sorry for the rant but thanks for bringing it up.

About GMW/Girl Meets the Great Lady of New York, the whole Ava/Marisol thing upsets me, perhaps more so because i've recently had to do a paper on the shitty murder of little Elisa Izquierdo an actual daughter of Cuba. Not only did they put Ava Kolker in race drag/brownface, Marisol is a racist stereotype of Hispanic girls visually (curly "big" hair, fancy earrings, heavy makeup). It's a total misfire.
I missed seeing this earlier but yes !! I agree, literally idk why they put a literal child in so much makeup other than to play into a stereotype. I think that this episode is kind of like the Girl Meets Commonism/Communism one where the writers bit off more than they could chew and oversimplified ideas in a way that was painful. When this episode came out I think a lot of fans thought that it was really ‘woke’ or whatever but like gmw wasn't perfect at all ffs.
Also I’m sorry but any show where literally all the main cast members are white or white passing shouldn’t be trying to do episodes on celebrating culture and diversity because they’re part of the problem.

Hey Boy/Girl Meets World fans. Apparently Danielle Fishel is directing several upcoming episodes of Disney’s new show: “Sydney to the Max” which stars her former co-star Ava Kolker. Check the new show out if you haven’t already. Definitely has a Boy/Girl Meets World feel to it already.

Blu-ray Review: Insidious: The Last Key
Tumblr media
Insidious: The Last Key is the franchise’s strongest entry since James Wan’s 2010 original. Admittedly, that may not be the grandest of statements; 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2 and 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3 each offer several well-executed horror set pieces, yet neither one manages to capture the delightfully creepy atmosphere of the first film. Insidious: The Last Key doesn’t quite attain that level either, but it works for two reasons.
First and foremost, the film belongs to Lin Shaye, who delivers her career-best performance. After testing the waters with Chapter 3, The Last Key revolves entirely around her character, parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier. It delves deeper into her background, both her childhood (including a great little twist involving her upbringing) and her life directly preceding the events of the first Insidious. The veteran character actress, aged 74, effortlessly leads the show.
Tumblr media
The other key to the The Last Key's success is the addition of director Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan). While Wan expertly crafted the first two chapters before passing the torch to writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) for the third, Robitel seems to have breathed new life into the franchise. His taking of the reigns is seamless, as the filmmaker made a smooth transition into the traditional narrative format from his found footage debut. Furthermore, none of his horror chops were lost along the way.
The film opens in 1953 New Mexico, where young Elise (Ava Kolker, Girl Meets World) struggles to understand her unique ability to communicate with the dead. Her family is also conflicted, with her father (Josh Stewart, The Collector) turning into an abusive monster in an effort to quell her claims. It’s amidst this turmoil that Elise first meets Key Face (Javier Botet, The Conjuring 2), a nasty demon with keys for fingers.
Tumblr media
Following the 16-minute prologue, the film cuts to California in 2010. Elise (Shaye) still bares scars - both physical and emotional - from her tumultuous upbringing, but she has honed her skills to pursue a paranormal investigating business alongside her affable sidekicks, Tucker (Angus Sampson, Fargo) and Specs (Whannell). When they're contacted by Ted Garza (Kirk Acevedo, Oz) to investigate her childhood home, Elise is forced to confront her fears.
In addition to facing her literal demons, Elise's return home finds her reconnecting with her estranged brother Christian (Bruce Davison, X-Men) and meeting his two daughters, Melissa (Spencer Locke, Resident Evil: Extinction) and Imogen (Caitlin Gerard, American Crime). Elise's haunting once again becomes an unintentional familial affair, forcing her to enter The Further in order to stop Key Face once and for all.
Tumblr media
As is the case for the previous Insidious movies, The Last Key loses steam when it goes into The Further. Although the concept of a paranormal purgatory is intriguing, the exploration of such a fantastical setting feels incongruous with the rest of the film, which is grounded in reality (as much as a supernatural movie can be). Beyond that, The Further is often host to cheap jump scares. It seems to be a hurdle that Whannell - who has gallantly penned all four entries in the franchise - has been unable to conquer just yet.
A bit of suspension of disbelief may be required to overlook a few conveniences, but Whannell concocts several clever twists, thrilling moments, and effective scares, ranging from the expected jump scares to dread-inducing moments of suspense. Most importantly, his script subverts expectations on more than one occasion. Robitel handles it all like a pro, working with cinematographer Toby Oliver (Get Out, Happy Death Day) to create the distinct visuals. Franchise composer Joseph Bishara provides another dramatically discordant score.
Tumblr media
While Shaye owns the screen, the rest of the cast also shines. Kolker fills her large shoes well as the young Elise, while Hana Hayes (The Grinder) plays the teenage iteration. Stewart is appropriately sickening as her father, yet he refuses to settle for a one-note performance. Tessa Ferrer (Grey's Anatomy) has a small but important role as his wife. Tucker and Specs' comedic relief was hit-or-miss in past installments, but Sampson and Whannell are funnier than ever this time around. Botet continues his reign as an unparalleled creature performer.
The Blu-ray release of Insidious: The Last Key includes an alternate ending, eight minutes of deleted scenes, a brief recap of the franchise, and three featurettes: "Going into the Further," "Unlocking the Keys," and "Becoming Elise." These segments include interview snippets with various cast and crew members, but Robitel is curiously absent; I was hoping for input on the newcomer’s take on the series. Alas, none of the Insidious films have had audio commentaries.
Tumblr media
As much as I love Shaye and respect her contribution to the Insidious franchise - she has truly made it what it is today - I think it's time to give the Insidious franchise a facelift if the prospective fifth chapter comes to fruition. After all, her character met her fate in the first film, necessitating various clever storytelling techniques and a complicated timeline to bring her back for three subsequent films. Robitel's addition clearly worked, so it stands to reason that more new blood could further the franchise. Insidious: The Last Key serves as a fine swan song, completing Elise’s story and delivering plenty of scares along the way.
Insidious: The Last Key is available now on Blu-ray and DVD via Sony.

Not that it wasn't stereotypical (because Disney has a lot of that), but what does the murder of a real life little girl have to dude with the character in this show? Also, I'm confused; are you referring to a post I made because I don't remember posting anything about GM The Great Lady of New York. :/
