In this episode, Jeff, Chad, and Bill welcome guest-host Scott Wells to review the 1989 “avant-garde surrealistic psychological horror film” from director Alejandro Jodorowsky. While the film is in English, Santa Sangre is a Mexican and Italian co-production that features a truly bizarre tale that has to be seen to be believed. The less said here, the better – it’s so much better to join the Grue-Crew to revisit this unpredictable, gorgeous, must-see mind-bender.
At the time of this writing, Santa Sangre is available to stream from Shudder, AMC+, Screambox, Kanopy, and Tubi, and is available on physical media from Severin in three releases: Blu-ray (2011), 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray (2021), and a 4K Ultra HD 4-Disc Limited Edition Collector’s Set (2021). Both 2021 releases are made from a 4K scan of the original negative supervised by the director.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be The Boogey Man (1980), directed by Ulli Lommel and featuring the formidable John Carradine … and a mirror? This should be a fun one!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

Santa Sangre (dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky)
-Jere Pilapil- 9/10 I’ll admit that I regret missing my chance to see this one on the big screen at a midnight screening last night, but I’d been out catching up with some friends and couldn’t physically have handled it. Thankfully Tubi is here to the rescue, allowing me to watch this thing (and free! And with a reasonably minimal number of commercial breaks!). I’m familiar with the basic Jodorowski shit - The Holy Mountain, El Topo - so seeing this was a blast. While those other works are more abstract tone poems than narrative films (but enthralling and unique all the same), Santa Sangre finds the maestro telling a little but more of a conventional story. Or, at least, it’s a more conventionally plotted story. Santa Sangre is about Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky as an adult, Adan Jodorowsky as a child), a circus performer. As a child, his parents are, uh, pieces of work. His father Orgo (Guy Stockwell) is a womanizing knife thrower, and his mother Concha (Blanca Guerra) is an acrobat who also runs a cult based around the story of a woman who was raped and had her arms cut off (it’s very important to have interests outside of work!). One night, Orgo’s affair with the circus’ tattooed lady and Concha’s jealousy thereof come to a head, leaving a bloody mess. We pick up with Fenix as an adult, staying in an asylum. He escapes and reunites with his mother. I won’t say more except that “sangre” is Spanish for “blood”. Blood works both as a tool and a theme: this movie was rated an NC-17 for violence that, honestly, I don’t find particularly extreme. The movie is a meditation on inherited trauma, in a way, with Fenix taking on various traits of his parents throughout the story, but also having terrible hallucinations. It’s also a story of Fenix self-actualizing and escaping the influence of his mother (arguably the only thing it has in common with the majority of Pixar movies). This is illustrated in a hilariously literal form, but the movie’s bluntness is effective and memorable. As with El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky’s invention is a thrill, and every scene is packed with visuals one can’t forget.
