I still like Bridgerton and am obsessed with these hot mess characters but I kinda wish Shondra Rhimes picked up a Beverly Jenkins book while on vacation.

omg yess. please. listen, she should have read an author who was inclusive in her historical romance so that when she profits off diverse portrayals of the regency era, it's genuine and not like jq.

Lately I've been reading fabulous series and just wanted to share my joy!

The only two series in the post that I've actually finished are Destiny by Beverly Jenkins and Cowboys of California by Rebekah Weatherspoon and both are magnificent 💜

I started The Brothers Sinister by Courtney Milan and The Cider Bar Sisters by Jackie Lau last year, but I've been taking my time reading them because of how good they are 💙

And this year, thanks to bookstagram, I discovered new to me authors Tracy Sumner and Daisy Jane and so far, I've loved the books I've read by each of them 🧡

I'm currently reading The Scandalous Vixen and The Brazen One

So finally hit by COVID. Luckily, I had a stack of comfort reads (inspired by @fated-mates ) to keep me company when I could finally focus on reading again.

Only, now I have so many more Lorraine Heath books to read because damn, @sarahmaclean is right. More people need to be talking about how awesome Heath is as a writer.

Starting Rebel by Beverly Jenkins (look at this gorgeous cover!). It's set in Reconstruction New Orleans. The heroine is from the north and I appreciate her saying that while Black people up north were technically free, they still couldn't vote and were segregated, among other things. I've done a fair amount of research on how the civil rights era, slavery, and segregation are taught in the North and the vibe is very much "we weren't as bad as the south!" with a side of "racism was only de facto not de jure up here!" which are both, to varying degrees, lies. But I'm glad that's clarified pretty much right off the bat here

Do no other authors exist outside of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters? Are you all not tired? They make a new adaptation every year or some other story is heavily influenced by their works. As a black and romance reader, I would like to see any other author get this treatment. Beverly Jenkins been writing period romances out here for years where are her movie adaptations? Miniseries? Huh, where?

This new Persuasion has people in a tizzy because it's more comedic and modern. Who cares? Go watch one of the 30 other sad versions if this one ain't doing it for you.

Y'all should be mad that the main love interest is a man who looks equal parts unwashed and unfinished, compared to the handsome and charming Henry Golding, how am I supposed to not root for him?
