Saturday Morning Television: Bigfoot and Wildboy (1977-1979)

Wildboy (Joseph Butcher), an orphan, was raised in the wilderness of the Northwestern United States by the legendary Sasquatch. Wildboy and Bigfoot (Ray Young) roam the countryside, stomping out pollution, apprehending evildoers, and rescuing those in need.

"Bigfoot and Wildboy was a live action children's television series on ABC. It began in 1977 as a part of The Krofft Supershow on Saturday mornings. Each episode was 15 minutes long, with cliffhanger endings resolved the following week. It became its own series in 1979 with twelve 30-minute episodes. There was a total of 28 episodes produced." Created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the team that created Scooby Doo and other Saturday Morning cartoon classics.

The Six Million Dollar Man versus Bigfoot, by Alex Ross.

The two-part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man, with Andre the Giant as Bigfoot, was one of my favorite of this series.  Later appearances of Bigfoot, with Andre replaced by Ted Cassidy, tried to soften the character, almost making him a sidekick (something he did become in Bigfoot and Wildboy, part of The Kroftt Supershow on Saturday mornings).

Marty Krofft, co-producer of iconic children’s television shows including “H.R. Pufnstuf” and “Land of the Lost,” died Saturday afternoon in California, his representative announced. He was 86.
