Hello!

I have not said a word about Freya since making that initial post (which may need some updating), so these questions are fun in the way that I have not thought about most of these things before.

I named her after the Norse goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, and gold, who rides a chariot pulled by two cats.

I also chose the name Freya because I am a big fan of Freya Rowley who was in CATS (2019) as Jellylorum, Tantomile in the UK Tour 2014, and a Swing in the UK Tour 2013.

The name may be seen as better suited for a OC that is a Norwegian Forest Cat or similar breed, but I think it fits well with the character I created.

I know this is probably more angled towards written works, but I want to take a different approach instead and talk about musical genres.

Since I made her more closely related to Griddlebone is the sense of vocal abilities, and that one of her three words is operatic, it would be fairly obvious that Freya could be a classically trained opera singer. I would not want to tie her down to one specific (and perhaps stereotypical) genre, and I think she would enjoy anything that allows her to flex her vocal prowess. Most importantly though, it should carry emotional weight! Vocal talents are not necessarily about who can be the most extreme.

What I have in mind is an artist such as Kennedy Ashlyn whose musical projects SRSQ (who released my album of the year in 2022 with Ever Crashing) or Them Are Us Too match (in my opinion) what I have in mind for less traditional classical format vocals.

I do not think Freya would really have a rival or arch-nemesis, and would be widely appreciated by everyone in the Tribe. She does have a tinge of competitiveness, but not enough to make her view anyone as a rival. There is the obvious wariness towards Macavity and his henchcats, but that is shared throughout the Tribe.

With her drive for perfection, I think her biggest enemy would be herself. She wants everything to be perfect and tries as hard as possible to achieve it, but that is not always possible and that can bother her. She also wants to try and please everyone as best as she can, which feeds into the perfectionism she strives for. It can all lead to never feeling quite happy with her efforts and make her unhappy. Trying to spread happiness can be a draining affair if no one reciprocates it.

Her worst memories are definitely realizing that she would not be around to see her Kittens grow up. She tries to plan ahead and make sure they are in the best care (and who better than with Jellylorum), but there is only so much that she can do. There are not many Cats that she would confide in to share her struggles, as she is one to internalize her emotions.

At one point towards her end, she would reach the conclusion that while she was not always perfect, she did as best as she could with everything, and find a fleeting comfort in that.

So i was looking through the Cats Wiki as one does and in the Gallery for the UK/European/?international? Tour 2013-14 i came across this picture.

Pretty Munkustrap based swing? Who is this? It’s not Victor according to the Wiki because Victor’s the one kneeling between Cass and Skimble. He’s not included in the Baby Alonzo Section of the Swings page. I can’t find a reference that names him. all the pics with him in it seem to be based around the same time/ event.

If anyone knows anything please let me know!

🧵 I haven't actually watched many productions yet (only about five, including the 1998 film). If I'm counting it then the victory currently goes to 1998 because it's what got me into Cats and I've watched it so many times I think it'll live in my head forever. John Partridge is also my favourite Tugger. If I'm not counting that (which is more fun) I'm biased toward the 2013 UK Tour as it was the second full stage recording I watched and the first major one. Plus I adore Joanna Ampil's Grizabella (she deserves more love).

🐱It's predictable but for me it's the Rum Tum Tugger. I love a confident narcissist who is actually soft toward their friends/family.

🔥Gillian Lynne's choreography is as important to me as the music (at least in replica shows). I personally haven't been able to get through a full production with the new choreography (and I've tried). It could be that I just don't like the new choreography though, and not that I inherently dislike changes to the choreography (which I suspect might be the case).

I was meaning to make a post on this cause I’ve had ideas for months but-

Have Grizabella get mad! (Or more mad)

Like I know she’s probably done some awful shit but I feel like her transitioning from almost begging the jellicles to acknowledge her pain to being more frustrated and almost threatening could be played up a little more.

My favorite example is Cats UK tour 2013

Grizabella seems to have actually been gashed here. Severely as you can see from her own reaction and the shock of the jellicles around her. But still nobody will touch her, nobody will hear her, they’ll only stare at her hostility, pity, perplex-ion and even hate.

She’s bitter and she’s angry as she realizes that they’ve truly lost any and all care for her. Which is why she doesn’t hesitate when getting face to face with Munkustrap to sing *at him*.

Even when it looks like Munkustrap might potentially swipe at her she doesn’t move. Doesn’t flinch. She’s resilient and will be heard. This treatment isn’t even exclusive to Munkustrap, as Jemima tries to approach her she only reiterates what’s right in-front of her. That she can see the border of her coat is torn.

And she doesn’t take the Cassandra shade lightly either inly reiterating once more that she’s hurt as she leans towards Cassandra looking her dead in the eyes.

What I’m saying is I want more “I’m that bitch” Grizabella during Glamour cat

I don’t understand why Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer have to change out of their song costumes. Like the song costumes look nicer then their chorus costumes just let them keep it on for the rest of the show.

It just seems like a pointless quick change to me but if there’s a legitimate reason I’m not getting please let me know.

Also “I hate/dislike/ am neutral on popular ship/character/thing” isn’t a new or controversial opinion trust me a-lot of people hate popular things.

How do you define a non-replica?

So, a replica is a production that's licensed by RUG (= Really Useful Group = ALW's company) to perform CATS with full official regalia: that is, they are allowed to use Gillian Lynne's choreo and Napier's designs and so on, but they are also obliged to follow the official rules for whatever a current official production is meant to do.

However. 'Current' here means 'current at the time the licence was issued'.

Shiki (Japan) is replica in that it's fully licensed from RUG. But since they started in 1983 and have followed their own design path since then (with occasional external influences from more Western productions), they are actually more different from more modern replica productions than some modern non-replicas.

Similarly (though more recently), the Oasis production got its licence just before the UK and US revivals, and that licence is apparently still current, so it preserves some pre-revival performance traditions (and is, so far, immune to the new rules about makeup that came in with the new international and asia tours).

Other replica productions of the 80s and 90s (like OG Vienna, Amsterdam/Paris, Zurich/Euro, Hamburg) also developed their own traditions - and the Australasian traditions (starting in the late 1990s) persisted until the 2014 asia tour.

And that's a pertinent example: the australasian productions were not a continual production, so they had to renew their license for each 'season' (2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2022, etc). So they reflect the vagaries of ALW's revival trends, even while their production company (and often a lot of their cast) stay the same.

A non-replica, otoh, may be influenced by the traditional/replica productions, but they might get into trouble if their designs and choreo are too recognisable. For example, the 2013 and 2018 mexico revivals were a) based on the original Latin American productions in the 1990s - some of the cast and production team returned to lead the designs - and b) in the case of 2018, they were adapted to include elements of hte Broadway revival.

The end result was something that's much more recongisable as an extra-saturated version of Gillian/Napier's production, but. Though I don't know the terms of their contract. I know that the fact that they had that much of the original production gave them less freedom in terms of their contract, and that the 2018 production was obliged to close down in preparation for the release of teh 2019 film.

I would say that's symptomatic of ALW/RUG's increasing pedantic control over the appearance of The Brand of CATS and resistance to having any alternative versiosn around, but. That attitude isn't really new. According to some conversations I've had with old CATS alumni, 'omg ur doing ur own thing??? STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!!!' was basically the reason that the Hamburg production (1986–2001) was closed down.

and RUG's insistence on THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE PRODUCTION comes in waves: most of the original productions and their various traditions were shut down in the late 90s and early 00s, and then, after regional US productions started to burgeon in the late 00s and on until the revivals, they cracked down on non-replicas again in the wake of the European and Broadway revivals.

tl;dr the definition of non-replica is about licensing and degree of freedom/control, with originality as a secondary consideration.

Hi,

I've noticed certain jokes/show elements across various productions, and I have my theories as to their trends, but was hoping you could confirm/elaborate on them?

Misto trying to light Tugger's tail on fire during his entrance- I see this in a number of London productions and in the Dutch/German tours. Is this a London thing that moved to the German tours after Cats closed on London and a bunch of the actors moved to Berlin? I can't confirm its presence on older Hamburg or Australian shows, which would have been Broadway based.

Chandelier/spotlight ring descending during Misto's conjouring turn: This one is harder to ID as there could be productions where this happens, but just isn't shown do to camera angles. But I've seen it in: Vienna (89), Mexico (91), Zurich (92), some German/Dutch Tours, UK 2013, and a few others (In Moscow 2005 is doesn't appear to decend, but it will light up so it can be seen). But I don't see it everywhere. I can't really tell if it was on Broadway as I don't have footage that show's this part wide enought to see if it's happening or not. (Because it's in both Vienna, Mexico and London, I would imagine it was on Broadway too) Do you know the trend for this show element? Or is it just the capability of the theatre/set. Also, do you happen to know why this show element is a thing? Is it a set design flex?

Extra conjuring turn during the "Girl's upstage" part of the Jellicle ball- I've seen this primarily in London-based productions, or with London-based Misto's. I did see it in 2nd UK Tour TV spot, so it's an established part of the London choreography, and basically all the German/Dutch tours (because of the aforementioned London exodus and t because Mark John Richardson, who was London based, basically did all the German/Dutch tours [over-exaggeration, I know]). (I did see a London revival version that didn't have it, but Misto was crawling in the background like he could have been in that spot, but needed to get to his next choreography point. I have seen other London revivals with it in, so I'm assuming the actor just wasn't feeling like he was able to do the show element in that version for whatever reason.)

So, I spent the last few hours comparing Jellicle Balls and Misto Numbers to search for patterns:

Tugger’s Tail:

This gag was part of the London Production as far back as the 90s. It doesn’t appear to have spread to any non-London-based productions. I checked quite a few different productions and the only ones with this bit are London-based. London and Broadway pace Misto’s number very differently, along with having their own sets of jokes, and this is one that’s exclusive to London-based versions. The mostly London-based 1998 didn’t have it because the 1998 version of this number is the Broadway version. Whenever something related to Misto differs between London and Broadway, 1998 always goes the Broadway route.

Spotlight:

This one’s a bit all over the place. It’s not in London, from what I can tell, but it shows up in both London and Broadway-based productions. The chandelier spotlight later returns to send Grizabella to the Heaviside Layer, but not all productions do it this way. I don’t believe the original London production did. I’m not completely sure why the chandelier thing happens, but it might be meant as a demonstration of the power of the Conjuring Turn. If the chandelier is the way of getting to the Heaviside Layer, then Misto is opening the doorway to heaven without realizing it. His magic is so powerful he can do that without trying or even noticing.

Jellicle Ball Turns:

This bit is another London-based one. I watched a London Jellicle and Broadway Jellicle Ball from the same year. London had the turns and Broadway didn’t. Mexico, a Broadway-based production, didn’t have the turns. The 2013 UK Tour did.

Comparing all these versions of Mr. Mistoffelees makes me want to post something about all the stuff I noticed, so thanks for providing some inspiration :)

Well anon, I (of course) have no idea how long you have been around these parts for, but some of the first 'bigger' asks on the blog were me giving a list of performers for each character that I thought were hot. I do understand that they are public figures in a way as well, so attention on them is inevitable. Sort of like discussing a celebrity. In the end, I am in a middle ground between these ends. Bomba: Gloria Toba (Mexico 2013): Mexico Bombas are the sexiest cat in the production. They casted full figured women to play Bomba. Absolute bombshells. I am thankful for that.

Jenny: Eloise Kropp (Broadway Revival): Eloise is super beautiful, energetic, and funny as hell.

Jelly: Aki Yumenko (Japanese Productions): I likely say this a lot, but I think the below pictures of her as Griddlebone (I think - Japanese casts are notoriously difficult to navigate) remain as the most beautifully arresting images showcasing Cats. It's what Grizabella was when she was little. It's in that form that she'll come back from the Heavyside Layer - as a kitten.

She allows me to have a past with the group, a feeling of having danced with them before I couldn't do it anymore. And she's so joyful and light before she carries the weight of Grizabella's sorrow.

I really appreciate the idea of Grizabella being reborn back in the Tribe as Babygriz, and it fills my heart with joy. She gets another chance at happiness with those that she probably loved most.

Jellylorum Week Day 1 - Favourite Jellylorum Actors

I LOVE every single Jellylorum actor (how can I not?), but I do have three favourites that come to mind.

Susan Jane Tanner - Original London Cast (1981-1982) Jellylorum/Griddlebone and CATS (1998) Jellylorum

She IS Jellylorum. She originated the character in London, and I adore her singing voice and the ways she portrays Jelly. She is so kind and gentle! Some people dislike her in the 1998 film due to her singing and the fact she is older, but those people are very much wrong. In my opinion she is underappreciated in CATS, as with Jelly as a whole.

I am not surprised to see that basically everyone has Susan as their favourite Jelly.

Bonnie Simmons - Original Broadway Cast Jellylorum/Griddlebone (1982-1992)

My other favourite Jellylorum, and my favourite Griddlebone. I ADORE her singing and wish I could have seen her perform! This is some footage of her as Griddlebone that I would recommend anyone watch, as Growltiger’s Last Stand on Broadway was an EVENT. I am also a big fan of the Braodway design for Jelly, which has influenced and carried on through the years in other productions and non-replicas.

Another very underappreciated performer, considering she was the third longest serving original cast member in the original Broadway production, behind only Susan Powers (1982-1997) and Marlene Danielle, who stayed for all 18 years until 2000!

Megan Ort - Oasis of the Seas Cast 4 (2016) Jellylorum/Griddlebone and Broadway Revival 2016-2017 Cats Chorus (cover Jellylorum, Grizabella, Sillabub, and Jennyanydots)

I can say with confidence that no one in this fandom loves Megan Ort more than me. Maybe a contentious pick as a favourite Jelly considering that she was only technically a fully casted Jellylorum for eight shows in the RCCL before jumping over to the Broadway Revival as a Swing/Booth Singer, but Megan has a absolutely phenomenal voice! I recommend watching her as Griddlebone in the RCCL because she is very talented, and is one of the best Griddlebone actors!

Megan performed over 70 shows on Broadway as Jellylorum, Grizabella, and Sillabub (mainly Jelly and Griz), and she loved playing Jelly! She also was a split track Jellylorum/Sillabub for one performance, where as Jelly she also sang the vocal parts of Sillabub, such as The Moments of Happiness and before and during Memory, which would have been amazing to have seen! She never went on as Jenny from what I can find. As an aside, Megan is a GORGEOUS Grizabella and definitely my favourite when it comes to overall appearance with the revival changes in 2014. I would have loved to see a JellylORTum day on Broadway!

I have some other wonderful Jellylorum actors (under the cut due to length) that also deserve some praise!

Clare Rickard - UK Tour 2013-2014 and London Palladium 2014-2016 Jellylorum/Griddlebone, Grizabella cover, and Dance Captain

Claire deserves a fair amount of praise! She has a fantastic voice and is one of only two Jelly actors (that I know of) who also were Dance Captains in their productions. She perhaps is the most talented Jellylorum ever casted in CATS! A true triple threat of singing, dancing, and acting, Clare is an amazing performer!

Barbara Obermeier - Vienna Revival Jellylorum/Griddlebone and Grizabella cover (2019-Present)

Although I have not been fortunate enough to see Barbara either perform or sing, she is a fun person and she loves to perform. The fact that she is one of the cover Grizabellas in Vienna would indicate that she has a fantastic voice, and I would love to hear it!

Anissa Hartline - US Tour 5 Jellylorum/Griddlebone (2006-2008)

Anissa has a beautiful voice in her performances as both Jelly and Griddle, but one of the key reasons she is on here is that she is so loving and gentle during the performance of Gus the Theatre Cat. Her respectful admiration and cheerfulness for Gus is so soft, and she reminds me a lot of Susan Jane Tanner's performance in CATS (1998) (and then she comes out as Griddlebone and she can SING!). I also love her design and she deserves some praise!

Alice Batt - Asia Tour 2020 Jellylorum/Griddlebone

This list would not be complete without me mentioning the lovely Alice! She is a fantastic singer and I wish we could have seen her (and everyone) for a bit longer in the Asia Tour before it was abruptly closed! She is always cheerful and smiling in any picture I see of her, I also wish there was more footage of her! She also has my favourite UK based Jelly design, and I love that they made her more floofy than previous Jellys!

There are many other wonderful Jellylorum actors as well that I did not mention, but I do truly love every Jelly that I see!

I should also mention that I adore so many of the Jellylorum actors in the Shiki productions of CATS, but trying to pinpoint actors is very difficult due to the largely complex cast lists.
