Bus Trip To Grange
Still knackered, I slept unusually soundly before being roused early Wednesday.  This time, cage rattles were interspersed with loud gull cries.  Bright sunshine encouraged us to take a trip to Grange-Over-Sands.  Monday’s horrendous  journey put us off the train and we opted for the bus instead.  We’d spotted the stop the previous day; on Victoria Road just across from The Coro (aside the second…

These are absolutely gorgeous maps designed by artist Stuart Bastik of Art Gene Ltd., an international art and environment project based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to purchase them individually and I am not going to shell out £26 for the whole set, but I have would love to have the Islands of Barrow map on my wall - it makes a great poster.
The set comprises of:
1. The Islands of Barrow
- An archipelago of nine islands: Walney, Barrow, Foulney, Piel, Pamsey, Roa & Sheep Islands - Headin Haw & Dova Haw.
2. The Furness Peninsula
- Barrow-in-Furness, Dalton-in-Furness, Newton, Askham-in-Furness, Ulverston, Millon, Gleasdon, Scales, Aldingham, Bardsea, Urswick & Stank.
3. The Cartmel Peninsula
- Cartmel, Lindale, Witherslack, Haverthwaite, Backbarrow, Low Wood, Cark, Flookburgh, Grange-over-Sands, Newby Bridge & Bouth.
4. Arnside & Silverdale Area
- Arnside, Silverdale, Beetham, Sedwick, Borwick, Over-Kellet, Milnthorpe, Heversham, Hincaster, Carnforth, Warton, Newbiggin & Burton-in-Kendal.
5. Morecambe & Heysham Area

Elegy for Solo Piano from Composer in Lockdown! When pianist and composer Stephen J. Wood entered lockdown, he found himself with a little more time on his hands than had been expecting; due to being unable to continue his teaching from his home near Cartmel in Cumbria. Stephen used this as the perfect opportunity to start writing a new piece he’d been planning for some time, resulting in Elegy: 2020 - a seven-minute tone poem for solo piano. Already, the Elegy has received a couple of fantastic reviews from two big names in the music world with more expected – see below. Although the sheet music and recording of the Elegy are available commercially from his website (www.stephenjwood.co.uk) or from online music stores, Stephen decided to use the piece as a fundraiser for cash-strapped charities dealing with people and families in desperate situations in the UK and abroad as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Launched less than two weeks ago, it has raised over £400 so far and is expected to raise much once the music becomes known. Two performances of the Elegy are now available on YouTube for people to see and hear - combines the performance with beautiful footage of the Cartmel Peninsula at sunrise one morning during lockdown Elegy: 2020 or search Stephen J. Wood to many other videos of Stephen’s work. Free recording and sheet music offer! Stephen is raising the money by asking people NOT to buy the sheet music and recording of the Elegy from him directly or from online music stores, but instead, to pay the equivalent £4.98 (or more!) directly to one of the following three charities running specific Covid appeals - Cafod, Salvation Army and Unicef. If people then forward their confirmation e-mail from the charity directly to [email protected], Stephen will send you a free copy of the sheet music of the Elegy for them to print free-of-charge along with the recorded single and related artwork. Full details of the Elegy: 2020, reviews and Stephen’s other publications and recordings can be found on his website (www.stephenjwood.co.uk). Wonders of Ulverston
A better start to Thursday, we had time for a leisurely stroll through the gardens to the station where it was no trouble using our railcard at the booking office.  A slightly delayed train gave us chance to have a lark on the prom.  I climbed railings on the slipway prompting a passing woman to joke: “health and safety!”  “Yep, I’m all about the health and safety!”  Riding the other way along…
