After I stumbled across some minor clickbait media website spinning doom and gloom for The Winchesters, I thought it was time for some in-depth analysis on what was going on with TW ratings.
Here's my own spreadsheet (numbers source from here). This is Nielsen overnights. While live+3 and live+7 will no doubt factor in, the talk from CW Nexstar executives leans on nielsen ratings (over streaming value), you can bet they want good overnights too.
Old CW relied on streaming to make money. New CW the shows need to be profitable on broadcast not just streaming.
The greyed out dates are airings impacted by contract carrier disputes with Nexstar.
10/18 and 10/25: during the Verizon-Fios v Nexstar contract dispute. Affected households: 2.5 mil. CW shows were off the air in a number of major markets in the Northeast (which is an area where The Winchesters does well). There was also a dispute between Dish TV and Nexstar that impacted Cincinnati CW affiliate.
"But ep 1.03 did okay, it got a .09 during a contract outtage, so that means the contract outtage didn't really affect it" -- more likely, the .09 would have been even higher, at the show's norm of .1 or .11.
Notice how TW sproinged back up to a .11 after the outtage ended.
12/6: Comcast-Nexstar contract dispute that knocked WPIX CW programming off the air for a few weeks. For context, WPIX is the largest CW affilliate in the US, with a household coverage of 7.5 mil. (NYC is also the largest DMA -- Designated Market Area -- in the US overall).
Note that the WPIX outtage didn't much affect the city, whose cable is carried by Spectrum, not Comcast, but it affected parts of NY state, parts of NJ, part of CT. WPIX's coverage area is massive and includes far more than just NYC.
11/22 -- in the light gray because it's more uncertain. I did some checking. DirectTV and Nexstar also have had some troubles, plus we can factor in possible pre-emptions. I'm thinking that .08 isn't a true reflection of TW's performance either.
The cheap clickbait media site failed to mention any Nexstar contract dispute dates and specifically used 12/6 to performatively hand-wring and go "oh no TW is doomed" and failed to mention the WPIX dispute.
Reminder, reputable media reporting again and again with information from Nexstar CW executives themselves has indicated CW is going to be examining demo groups. So "total viewers" lump sum isn't much of an indicator.

Home WAN Failover with UDM Pro
If recurring cloud service fees for hobby projects cause death by a thousand cuts, I'm feeling like I did the first few times Ashina Elite - Jinsuke Saze kicked my ass in Sekiro:
...but my SRE day job long ago scared me off single points of failure, so I've been hesitant to host services that real users depend on--mostly https://life4ddr.com and https://truebpm.dance--at home.
But then we moved to our new home, where the prior owners had installed a couple of 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwalls in the garage, and I realized I had power redundancy for the first time. This got me thinking about what it would take to build a sufficiently HA environment at home for hosting community projects and, well, there's work left to do to answer that question.
Might as well start with...
Redundant ISPs!
Step 1: ISPx2
Step 1 is easy: We pay $80/mo for AT&T Gigabit fiber as our primary ISP. I've had a (deactivated) Starlink RV dish and have been waiting for the chance to use it.
The primary downsides of Starlink for RVs are a) the slightly higher cost than residential Starlink ($135/mo vs. $110/mo for residential), and b) RV users are throttled during periods of high demand. In practice, this has never happened to me; I'm on the waitlist for a residential plan.

So why not another fiber or broadband provider?
I've been enjoying not paying Comcast too much

They're hobby projects, not payment processors that need 5+ 9s of availability and sub 10ms latency

Through the wall and into the router
First time using this stuff to seal the hole drilled for the cable, plus some Sikaflex concrete sealant since, unlike regular silicone caulk, it can be painted once dried.
There may be an embarrassing part omitted here involving drilling into an "electrical wire", panicking, and in the end discovering that it was chicken wire & part of the stucco...

The official routing kit comes with a 3/4" drillbit. I used the 1" drillbit I had on hand.

Step 2: Automated failover
At this point, I had a separate SSID that I could manually switch devices to, but I didn't want to have to deal with doing that manually when I'm away from home. And I might not always be available, and don't want users waiting until I am...
Enter the Ubiquiti Dream Machine (UDM) Pro!
Ok, so I really just copied a friend here without doing a ton of research:
But it ticks the boxes:
WAN failover (WAN load balancing not supported... but we can handle a few seconds of downtime)
Remote management interface
...That's it?
It does way more than this, but my goals are not lofty.
Once it arrived, it only took a few minutes for initial setup:
Plugged primary modem into WAN port 2, SFP+ 10gb (with an RJ-45 adapter)
Plugged Starlink router into WAN port 1 (with a Starlink ethernet adapter)
Turned on the UDM Pro, paired via bluetooth and finished guided setup through the iOS app
I then changed the port configuration to make WAN 2 primary and WAN 1 secondary. In my head this felt like a step toward >1Gb home Internet (AT&T offers 5 Gb today 😱). In practice, this led to a lot of packet loss and continual failovers to the backup link; it's probably an issue with the adapter or cable somewhere in the chain but i didn't feel like figuring it out.
I then discovered that you can configure port 8 as the secondary WAN link, and shuffled connections around so both WANs were cabled without the need for an adapter. This fixed the failover flapping and packet loss.
Somewhere along the way I also changed the echo server from the default Ubiquiti server to Google DNS (8.8.8.8). Ubiquiti pings the echo server to make the decision to fail over or not. I'm not sure this contributed to solving my issues, but it has for some

I didn't have to simulate failover because I broke things plenty of times during the setup process:
In practice, I saw 5-10 seconds of packet loss before Starlink took over. And automated recovery when AT&T started pinging again! More than adequate for users of a DDR BPM calculator.
What's left?
Ok, redundant power + Internet. But how do users get to a server deployed in my house when the IP changes on failover? Dynamic DNS? Do I go full Brad Fitzpatrick and shell out $12k+ on a /24 of IPv4 space, and create my own ASN + anycast from my house? (probably not)
Am I going to deploy CRITICAL DANCE GAME SERVICES on a SINGLE DESKTOP MACHINE!? (obviously not)
I don't know. Hopefully we will find out together in a subsequent post.

If ya’ll have followed me for awhile, you might recall I used to eat ramen literally every single night. I also had chicken everyday, usually chicken tenders and boneless wings, but sometimes shredded chicken and gravy from my favorite local Mexican restaurant (with beans, rice, guac, and sour cream as well) or chicken katsu.

I used to be a foodie, but then my health changed and I got eating and appetite issues. Due to that, I wasn’t eating nearly as much as I used to and I didn’t enjoy it like I used to either. I also only eat the same few foods, so even my options have dwindled. Eating often felt more like a chore.

I ate, just not as much. Unfortunately, that led to other health issues. I’ve actually had a feeding tube for the past few months now, so I’ve just been getting the feeding tube formula stuff. I could still eat and drink actual food as well even with a feeding tube, but due to the fact I’ve also had a breathing tube and then switched to a trachea tube; I haven’t been able to eat or drink actual food at all. :/ I miss my favorite foods and my coffee so bad, it sucksss. I find myself craving so many things, even foods I wasn’t really eating before. A lot of things sound good right now.

If I’m having vanilla I’ll add chocolate and/or strawberry syrup. I’m not a sprinkles gal.

I wouldn’t be able to take even a sip. I used to love spicy food and put hot sauce on pretty much everything, but about 5 years ago I no longer could tolerate it for some reason. I went from having spicy food all the time to not being able to have it at all. However, even back when I could eat it I still wouldn’t be able to drink a bottle of hot sauce, not even close. I’d get sick.
How about 10 bottles of ketchup?
Nooo. I like a little ketchup, but I certainly wouldn’t be just drinking it and certainly not anywhere near that much. I wouldn’t get more than like a sip I bet before throwing up. Even with something I love, such as ranch that I have with a lot of foods I eat, sounds awful if I were asked to drink it.

No. I love maple syrup, but again I wouldn’t be able to just drink it. And omg could the body handle all that sugar? Even just one would be too much.

Aug 1, 2022 -early evening yesterday, last day of July
This has been a really hot summer here. In addition we have had no rain for a very long time and so are in the middle of quite a serious drought. I am a gardener and it has been very hard to keep things going with this lack of rainfall. I am not a fan of heat and humidity. I'm definitely not a summer person. I'm hoping August will be a little cooler... and wetter.
On the roof of the barn is a Starlink satellite dish. As of the beginning of June, there is finally broadband at my house, after 20+ years on slow DSL. The only broadband that has been available on the Island before this, is Comcast cable, and they havemade it clear for years now, that it wasn't worth their time or money to extend the line further down the dirt road to the four or five houses in that section of it.
But thanks to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite service, I now can access broadband, and it is working really well. It was also very easy to set up. This service was developed in order to provide broadband internet service two people in rural areas who only can get DSL, and for people all around the world who have had no access to any kind of internet service.
People seem to love to hate Elon Musk, but what they may not know is that he generously donates satellite dish kits to people in disaster areas, like the island of Tonga after a devastating hurricane cut them off from the rest of the world, and he has sent hundreds of Starlink satellite kits to Ukraine to allow the Ukrainians to retain access to the internet, during the terrible conflict that they are having to endure.

Local Brands in Demand
Those of us living in the Philadelphia area know there are many successful companies headquartered in the Philadelphia metro area. We know the hugely successful consumer brands headquartered here like Comcast, Urban Outfitters and Campbell Soup.
These firms have millions of consumers, large marketing departments, abundant financial and talent resources and have grown way beyond the Philadelphia region. Although Comcast, Campbell and Urban Outfitters are impressive, there are smaller Philadelphia area businesses with impressive growth strategies. Two of my favorite Philadelphia brands are notable success stories: Di Bruno Bros. and Chickie’s & Pete’s
CHICKIE’S AND PETE’S
Chickie’s &Pete’s (https://chickiesandpetes.com/) is a casual dining/sports bar restaurant that grew by opening more restaurants to expand their retail presence and generate new sources of revenue. The original restaurant in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia is still open and busier than ever. The popularity of the original restaurant was due to consistently good seafood, bar food, and signature dishes and sides. The friendly, neighborhood atmosphere as well as the owner presence (owners are named Chickie and Pete) helped make the original Chickie’s and Pete’s a success. Who wouldn’t want to go to a place with a unique, cool and compelling name like Chickie’s &Pete’s?
New locations have slowly and strategically opened in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia suburbs, the New Jersey Shore and recently, Las Vegas!

One of the reasons the retail expansion is working is because the new restaurants have the same menu, same neighborhood vibe and character. The set-up is the same in all of the new locations and the overall experience of the original Chickie’s and Pete’s in Mayfair is re-created in the new restaurants.
This expansion strategy gives Chickie’s &Pete’s access to a broader market, ability to generate more revenue and a platform for future growth. From the consumers point of view, the convenience of new locations closer to our homes makes it easy to be a more frequent customer. Their future growth will be interesting to watch and it will be exciting to see which suburb is next on the list for a new location.
Di Bruno Bros., the legendary South Philly Italian specialty foods retailer grew in a different way with a different growth strategy. In addition to opening a few new retail stores, Di Bruno’s executed an effective marketing program with heavy focus on e-commerce marketing: most Di Bruno products are now available for delivery through the Di Bruno web site.
Di Bruno Bros. in South Philly has had the distinction of a quality brand but until recently, access to their specialty products was limited because it required driving to their retail store in South Philly. Di Bruno has been very popular and famous for authentic Italian specialty foods for many years. This popularity reduced the risk for their expansion plans.
The recent opening of the new, large Di Bruno Brothers store on Walnut St. in center city Philadelphia is significant for loyal Di Bruno customers. This store is more convenient with a central location near shopping, restaurants and more importantly, better parking than the original store. This new retail location improved the shopping experience by making shopping more frictionless.
As part of their omnichannel plan for growth, Di Bruno’s improved their web site and they now provide quick and reliable delivery. The new omnichannel plan shows they are strategic thinkers because the expansion increases the frequency and volume of shopping for existing Di Bruno customers. In addition, it will be easier to attract new customers that would consider it too inconvenient to travel to South Philly for Di Bruno specialty foods. Another aspect of the omnichannel plan that provides an opportunity for new revenue sources is the expanded distribution of Di Bruno specialty items (and many of the most popular) are now available in regional grocery stores. In my opinion, this growth strategy is just as important as the e-commerce strategy. Di Bruno now has an opportunity to present several convenient ways to shops for Di Bruno products and they can promote the options in their marketing efforts. Since Di Bruno is also doing more digital advertising and direct marketing advertising to consumers who have shopped previously, they now have access to more consumer data which allows them to use data strategically with targeted offers.
It will be interesting to see how big Di Bruno becomes and how far their reach will extend. It will also be interesting to see what they will do to continue retail expansion. I wonder if they will start opening new retail stores in the suburbs. Personally, I would love to have a Di Bruno store in a suburb near me.
Di Bruno Bros. and Chickie’s &Pete’s are successful because even though they are small, regional brands, they both have strong value propositions that focus on the quality of their foods. Both brands have a brand story that is authentic: Chickie’s and Pete’s has re-created the original, Philadelphia neighborhood appeal in their new locations with the original and authentic menu items. Di Bruno Bros. offers real Italian foods that originated in an authentic Italian neighborhood in Philadelphia. Although I believe it is great that both local brands found a way to expand and grow revenue, I hope the authenticity does not become diluted as they grow.

Hmm, a pretty recent one is from rollerblading, my wheels got stuck on a little stone and I fell almost headfirst into some construction debris. Luckily, since I have plenty of rollerblading experience, I know how to fall, so I didn’t get seriously hurt -- just got scrapes all over. My elbow was in a particularly bad shape and now I got a nice scar to forever remind me of my adventures.
