There's Only One You 2024: a sports rpf short fanworks prompt meme is live!
262 fanworks in 12 different sports rpf fandoms. Check out the works and the fandoms and grab a cup of coffee 'cause it's just banger after banger across fandoms!
Thank you everyone for your hard work in making this another wonderful year! It is a joy to do this with you again. Your enthusiasm and joie de vivre make all the logistical stuff worthwhile.
Creators - make sure you update the posting date on your works to today so it appears at the top of the tag, especially if you posted weeks ago! Your names will be revealed on Monday, April 8 between 9am-10am pt (unless your work is also in anonymous collection.)
Everyone - if you enjoyed a work, slam that kudos button and leave a comment! Short works do not get nearly enough attention in fandom and these creators worked hard - let them know what you loved about their work! And I'll emphasize that doubly for the podficcers, artists, and fanmixers here, because those are also creators that don't see a lot of praise even beyond short fics. tl;dr: kudos + comment if you liked it!
Thank you all!! Settle in for a good weekend because we've got a lot to enjoy here 🌞

[incorrect] Fastest Growing Fandoms on AO3 This Week (05/13/2024)
Every week I pull data on how many fics are in each fandom and compare to the previous week, then calculate the percentage increase to determine fastest growing fandoms.  Since this naturally skews towards smaller fandoms, I have included the same data filtered to Over 1k, 5k, & 10k fics.
Overall:
Tumblr media
Over 1,000 Fics:
Tumblr media
Over 5,000 Fics:
Tumblr media
Over 10,000 Fics:
Tumblr media
Source: AO3 Fandom Dashboard
Not everyone was seeing my reblog, so I'm editing the original to include my note:
Okay so if you'll see an earlier post I made, I fixed a bug last week that ensured fic counts include locked fics again. Since last week's numbers were before the fix and the percentage compares last week and this week, all the fandoms with high locked fic % (mostly RPF) are showing on this week's "fastest growing" analysis. Not quite accurate, but it will fix itself next week. Sorry y'all!

a disruption of routine
for @cycleprompttuesday
prompt: rain
note: title inspired by this amazing post by @flourbray, go check it out
One look at Jonas and Tadej already knows what he’s going to say.
“I should get going,” he tells Tadej with a sigh, then hugs him a little harder before letting go.
The predictability doesn’t make things any easier. It’s been a while since the same pattern is repeated: every time they do this — whatever this is — Tadej wants Jonas to stay the night. He never says it out loud, and Jonas always leaves.
He won’t ask this time, either.
Instead, he just watches carefully as Jonas untangles himself from his arms, gets up and starts putting on his clothes. Once Jonas is completely dressed and probably ready to go, Tadej looks away. He can’t shake the feeling that this is wrong, so he avoids eye contact. He looks out the window and stares at the gray sky, full of tumultuous, dark clouds.
“You know, I think it’s going to rain,” he says casually, then is hit with an idea. He adds, “Maybe you shouldn’t drive home tonight.”
It’s a six-hour drive. Another reason why they don’t do this as often as Tadej would like to. When they’re not battling each other at stage races, all they have are sparse afternoons amidst busy race schedules and training camps. Tadej knows that is why Jonas won’t think of this as an actual relationship.
Jonas drives, Tadej drives. To Monaco, to Annecy, to Lugano. You come, I’ll come next time, they tell each other. Next time takes forever to come. What Tadej wants is to board a plane to Denmark and settle in Glyngøre for a while. He never tells that to Jonas.
Now, Jonas’ eyes follow his and he frowns. “It doesn’t look too bad. I’ll probably avoid it if I hit the road now.”
Tadej doesn’t know why it’s so hard for him to just ask Jonas to stay. Confessing his desire for Jonas all these months ago was easy. He felt so brave back then—but in hindsight, taking the first step came naturally, when for years he had noticed the way Jonas looked at him.
Now, the idea of blatantly asking Jonas to spend the night feels as challenging as climbing the Col de la Loze.
“Forecast says it’s gonna rain,” he insists, after pulling his phone from the nightstand to check the weather app. “Come on, I’ll get worried if you get caught up by it on the road.”
Jonas makes a puzzled face. Tadej senses his hesitation and waits for the denial, but Jonas just asks, “Is this your way of telling me to stay?”
Actually, Tadej knows why he never asks Jonas to stay.
He doesn’t want to impose, and he doesn’t want to demand. He knows he takes up too much space. Jonas is a man of routine, and these stolen afternoons are already a disruption of it. Tadej hates routine and needs to be entertained most of the time. He’s terrified of this difference between their natures, and won’t call attention to it.
At the same time, he really wants to have Jonas to himself for the whole night.
“I mean, it’s the safe thing to do,” Tadej replies without really answering. He can see in Jonas’ disappointed blue eyes that this is not what he wanted to hear.
"I really shouldn’t. I already missed training ride today—"
“We can ride tomorrow morning,” Tadej interrupts him. “You can borrow one of my bikes, we’re the same size. I won’t even look at your numbers.”
Jonas smiles, and Tadej is flooded with hope.
“I won’t ride for hours and then drive for even more hours after that,” he says, but before Tadej’s hopes are completely crushed, he adds: “I’ll drive home first thing in the morning, if it’s not raining.”
Tadej will happily take it, especially when Jonas gets rid of the clothes he’d just put on and falls into bed with him, lips searching for his, fingers digging into his skin.
Despite the weather forecast, it doesn’t rain.
Sex with Jonas is great, but waking up next to him is better.
Tadej first feels it in his nose. Not just the smell, but also the pressure of Jonas’ collarbone against the tip of it. He can’t help but inhale deeply, even before he moves.
“I know you’re awake,” Jonas murmurs somewhere above him. Tadej pretends not to hear it and keeps his eyes closed. Jonas lets his fingers run lazily through Tadej’s hair and kisses his forehead. “Come on, I should probably get going.”
“It’s too early,” Tadej objects, then hides his face in the crook of Jonas’ shoulder.
Jonas chuckles.
“I never took you for a sleepyhead. Thought you’d be one of those people who are full of energy early in the morning.”
Tadej kisses Jonas’ neck and feels, rather than hears, a low moan rising in his throat.
“Do you think much about early mornings with me?” Tadej asks, lips brushing against the sensitive skin under Jonas’ ear.
“Yes,” Jonas replies without hesitation. He wraps Tadej’s waist in his arms and pulls him even closer. Their legs are entwined and Tadej can feel the goosebumps on Jonas’ skin.
“I can be full of energy, with the right motivation,” Tadej teases, then nibbles his ear. Jonas pants.
Tadej finds out that sex right after waking up next to Jonas is even better.
It doesn’t take much to convince Jonas to have breakfast before he leaves. Tadej teaches him how to use his fancy coffee machine. He toasts the bread and makes them scrambled eggs.
Jonas eats like a starved man. “It tastes so good,” he says, mouth full.
“So does your coffee,” Tadej replies, taking one last sip. “Shame I already drank it all.”
Jonas smiles and offers, “If you want more, you can just ask.”
Tadej wants to ask for so much more.
He clears his throat and decides to start small.
“The weather is actually nice this morning. Wanna go for a ride?”
Jonas’ eyes sparkle with some kind of mischief. Tadej recognizes this look — it means Jonas really wants something he shouldn’t. He pushes just a little.
“Come on—a short ride, I promise.” And since Jonas still doesn’t say anything, he delivers the final blow, a challenge: “You can’t tell me you get too tired to drive after a 20k ride.”
Jonas looks almost offended. “I don’t.”
“So let's go.”
“Fine,” he concedes, and Tadej tastes sweet victory. “But I’m not wearing your UAE kit.”
Tadej doesn’t even try to hide the smugness on his face.
“You’ll look better in Slovenia’s lime green, anyway.”
Jonas laughs and, from the way his heart starts racing in his chest, Tadej knows he’s not going to let him go. He leans in and kisses Jonas on the mouth, hard and demanding. Jonas is taken by surprise at first, but after a beat, kisses him back. They end up in the bedroom again.
Jonas and Tadej are careful with each other in bed, but not after, on the roads. They attack on the climbs and race to imaginary lines. They end up in Nice and park Tadej’s bikes by a café, around lunchtime. The owner is a friend, so she gets them a table in a reserved corner, with a sea view. Under the table, Jonas rests his leg against Tadej’s, and it feels almost as good as holding hands. Despite the nice weather, there’s a storm inside Tadej’s chest. The air feels heavy around them and smells like longing.
It takes them almost four hours to come back.
“I’m sorry we didn’t stick to 20k,” Tadej offers when they leave the bikes in the garage.
Jonas shrugs and pulls him into a quick kiss.
“I’m not,” he admits, then asks, “Is it supposed to rain tonight?”
Tadej checks the weather app on his phone. It’s somewhat cloudy now, but no, it won’t rain tonight.
“Yes,” he lies, feeling just a little guilty.
Jonas frowns and stares at the ceiling for a moment. Tadej doesn’t think he believes him, anyway. Yet, he starts to ask: “Should I—”
“Yes,” Tadej repeats, this time speaking the truth. “You should stay another night.”
Tadej wakes up next to Jonas. Again. They have sex right after. Again. They take a shower together, then Jonas makes coffee and Tadej toasts bread. Again.
Tadej finds out he doesn’t mind this routine at all.
Now, Jonas is the one who looks out the kitchen window. It’s a bright and sunny day.
“It doesn’t look like it’s going to rain today.”
Tadej feels a lump in his throat, but still muster the courage to ask:
“Do you want to stay anyway?”
Jonas’ eyes search and find his, and he smiles contently. Tadej can’t help but flash him a wide grin in response.
“Let me call the team,” Jonas says with conviction. And to Tadej’s questioning look, he replies: “They’ll find a way to get my bikes here, since I’m going to stay for a while.”

ok but rarepair WHO and HOW and tell me nooow
Ok this is the double bonus WIP doc even though only one of the WIPs is about a rarepair. The rarepair is Jonas/Mathieu, which is somewhat un-exciting I think because they are literally NEVER PICTURED TOGETHER and have NO CHEMISTRY. So it's not like a fun rarepair it's a de facto rare pair if you know what I mean. Anyway! The concept is this:
Jonas is on vacation in Benidorm sometime after his season ends. He starts talking to a ripped-looking blonde guy on grindr named Mathieu (yes, he would use his real first name, he obviously has no face pics so it's fine). It's going well, they make plans to meet in Jonas' hotel room.
Right before Mathieu arrives, Jonas checks the group chat and sees a message from Wout about being in Benidorm for a cyclocross race and he's like "oh fuck oh god that's Mathieu van der Poel" and tries to leave but it's too late, he runs into Mathieu in the lobby. Mathieu figures out what's going on, too. They decide it's a good idea to sign NDAs even though they didn't actually hook up, they both saw each other on grindr and their respective teams would think it was for the best. Here's all that:
Tumblr media
Anyway at this point Mathieu is like "well actually what if we did hook up" and I think they do, most of what I want to get out of this fic is
getting Jonas and Mathieu to plausibly hook up, and
Jonas realizing that he's going to have to like, interact with Wout knowing that he fucked Mathieu van der Poel. Wout is straight in this one so he doesn't care in that way but Jonas is like "he's going to be so mad at me" even though I don't actually think Wout would be mad.
and a secret third thing, maybe it ends up being a regular thing and I get to write awkward scenes where Mathieu appears on the bus, at training camp, etc. I just think that would be fun. Even if Wout's not mad about it I still think it would be pretty funny.
So yeah idk I'm kind of stuck on the sex scene with this one because, well, it's a random hook up and it's going to be awkward and I'm also not entirely sure what they're both like in bed yet, but I add onto this a little bit every month so maybe some day it'll make it out of the drafts!

out of context lines!
thanks @interdisciplinary-disaster for taggging me!
rules: post a line from your current wip with no context
okay here's the one I've been working on rn:
They weren't going to try too hard to break either of the curses after that intial life-threatening backlash, the inspector told Mathieu, even if they were going to assure the victim they had. All too frequently, these sort of complex curses actually were protecting them, even if it seemed like a curse.
and then a line from the dragonriders of pern au!
There was only four people in the candidates circle, and the poorly lit warehouse made the crowd of observers appear a faceless whispering mass, stirring up the silt of unease that had begun to gather in Wout’s gut.
I'll tag @thedeadparrot, @fftifft, @flourbray and @etapereine if the urge strikes you all- and if anyone else wants to do it consider this my tag for you!

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
thank you @yoellglia for the tag! and don't sell yourself short as a writer, your fics are lovely
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
right now i have 35! hoping to reach 40 very soon because i have some oneshots and stuff in the works
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
139,645 (damn that's more than i expected)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
at the moment it's tennis and cycling rpf, with other sports-adjacent things sprinkled in
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
my most kudosed fic was hit by the bot, but the next five are grass stains when you kneel (tennis), sunflower white (cycling), fly to live (check, please), free pistachio ice cream (tennis) and polaris (cycling)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
yes! just because i always want to talk more and responding to comments / leaving comments has made me some of my best fandom friends
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
there's a few but it has to be summer seemed to last forever because what is angstier than 34 days!jackparse ?
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
well i like hopeful more than happy endings but the end of whatever a moon has always meant is quite cute
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not so far! hoping to keep it that way haha it helps to write for tiny sports fandoms
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
nope.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
lord i used to as a kid but it never saw the light of day so i'll say no for this one (it was pretty crazy haha)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
that would require people to want to steal it XD no, i simply don't write the types of fics that people seem to steal
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
no.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
a couple, not published on my account. working on one as well!
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
i don't really do all time favourites, especially not for shipping in fic. in my view a ship is a tool to tell a story or to convey a theme, so i like whatever allows me to do that
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
my cricket series ... i try not to give up on things but it's been a while.
16. What are your writing strengths?
i have gotten really good at body language and imagery which is something i practice a lot. i'm also good enough at grammar to break he rules on purpose now
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i don't sit down and just write often enough, and if something is frustrating me i tend to write it in a rush and not give it the attention it deserves (the last couple scenes of firefly jars are s perfect example, although i am proud of that fic as a whole)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
i do it occasionally. i like to do it when it matters that it's in another language, like if the pov character doesn't understand it or a character making an effort to speak that language is a big deal. i don't include translations, and sometimes don't even italicize.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
on this account, cricket rpf.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
it's got to be route 66. my love, my life, my everything. i will update soon! ish. whenever my brain cooperates with me. of my recent fics i also really like your hand on my heart but that's a bit darker.
tagging @bluespring864 @strigimorphaes @softbrah @fftifft @polkadotjersey and @shambolicchaos as well as whoever wants to do it!

I think you should post about spies2 👀 💖
As if you didn't already know all about this one!!! It's supposed to be the sequel to the Wout/Christophe spies fic I wrote for to1u, where it's the day after Christophe slips up and fucks Wout for [insert reason here] and Christophe has a crisis and Wout doesn't understand why Christophe is having a crisis. I wrote two sentences and then decided that I wanted to sell even more of my soul to Stardew Valley instead.

unbelievable
for @cycleprompttuesday
prompt: lies
After almost a year, Tadej and Jonas meet again, this time in Florence.
It’s the eve of the first stage of the Tour de France. The teams presentation is loud, chaotic, fun. The air is buzzing around them with excitement from the fans, the journalists, the riders, the staff. It’s unplanned — and quite unlikely, considering the circumstances — but they still find themselves in a quiet corner behind a team bus. Not exactly alone, but not surrounded by a crowd, which in itself is almost unbelievable.
They assess each other for a second. Jonas’ hair is longer and Tadej has grown a mustache. Jonas’ eyes are still soft for Tadej and Tadej’s smile is still brighter around Jonas.
“It’s been forever, man,” Tadej says as a way of hello. He opens his arms, but Jonas goes for a fist bump and they chuckle awkwardly at themselves. They settle for a handshake and a pat on the back, and it feels like a compromise.
“Yeah, that’s the longest we’ve been without racing each other.”
“Oh, you’re right, I haven’t noticed.”
That is a lie. Since they became rivals, this has been the longest time they’ve spent without seeing each other, and Tadej definitely noticed.
One year ago, Tadej had his lips all over Jonas for what it felt like hours or just a few minutes. Jonas whispered sweet confessions in his ear, then proceeded to painfully list all the reasons why that could never happen again. The worst part was that Tadej agreed with all of them.
They never really talked about it, and now what’s left is small talk.
“Ready for another battle?” Jonas asks absentmindedly, looking around without meeting Tadej’s eyes.
“Sure, are you?”
Jonas finally looks straight at him and smiles. “Well, I don’t plan to make it easy for you.”
“I’ve been watching… you’re having the hell of a season so far, right?
“Yeah, it’s been a good couple of months.”
That’s a lie. All season long Jonas has been flying on the road, but never before he’d felt so shit about it.
It’s probably because he’s constantly aware that the price he paid for it was giving up Tadej, and everyday he wonders if it’s worth it. Most of the time, he thinks it’s not — but then there are those moments up the mountains or at finish lines, when everything is loud around him but somehow his mind is quiet, and he knows that, like a junkie, he can’t live without them.
“You’re not doing too bad either, are you now?” Jonas adds, playfully understating it. “I have to watch out for the Giro winner.”
“You can make it easier for yourself if you don’t sprint for mountain points,” Tadej suggests with a wink.
“Stop with the mind games,” Jonas tells him with a smile. “You know I won’t just let you have them.”
“You’re greedy and selfish,” Tadej complains mockingly, earning a laugh from Jonas.
“That’s on you,” Jonas says, with an amused gleam in his eyes. “When the best cyclist in the world calls you the best climber in the world, you kind of have to go for the polka dot jersey.”
Tadej grins. “Oh, you saw that interview.”
Jonas nods. “I’m sorry, I should’ve called you to say thanks.”
“Don’t worry, I didn’t expect you to.”
That’s a lie. If not well-thought, the interview was still a cry for attention, and the frustration at not getting any still stings.
For months after that fateful night, they kept talking, usually via text messages. The texts didn’t mean much — congratulations after Worlds, Vuelta and Lombardia; happy birthday wishes; pictures of bikes and landscapes; a photo of Tadej with a young fan who wore Jonas’ Jumbo jersey (I took it personally, Tadej joked); a short video of a goofy dog relentlessly chasing Jonas up a climb (She’s just like you, Jonas wrote). Still, the texting itself meant everything to Tadej. It meant Jonas was thinking about him, it meant he was not letting Tadej go.
Eventually, it came to an end.
But when Tadej recorded the shortest video ever to congratulate Jonas for a Danish prize he had never heard about, Jonas called.
The phone call was almost as short as the video. Thank you so much, Jonas said, to which Tadej replied, I meant every word, and that left Jonas without words for a few seconds. This is too hard, he finally muttered, then hung up.
Tadej was furious. He wanted to call Jonas back and yell at him for being such a coward. In the end, he was just as much of a coward, because despite his anger, he didn’t do anything.
After the interview, he still waited for a call that never came.
“You know why I didn’t, though,” Jonas murmurs, running his fingers through his own hair in what looked like a soothing gesture.
Men will do anything not to go to therapy, but that’s exactly what it took for Jonas to stop texting Tadej.
It was an act of self-care, he learned. All he needed was to stick to his decision and stop looking back. He knew he had his reasons — they had little to do with his sexuality, and everything to do with the fact that his job is to beat Tadej season after season. He has to discuss Merijn’s plans of cracking him, he has to come up with ideas to explore his weaknesses, he has to execute them on the road and watch what they do to Tadej. He can’t be sorry for his suffering, because that’s what it takes for him to win. He also knows he can never let his guard down, because it’s Tadej’s job to do the same.
He yearns for Tadej, but he doesn’t think he can be his executioner by day and his lover at night.
And yet. He can’t help but wonder.
Despite his better judgment, he now asks:
“Do you still think about it?”
Tadej doesn’t know how to answer the question without speaking the truth, and he doesn’t trust himself to do so without falling to his knees and begging Jonas to reconsider. So he doesn’t speak at all.
“It’s okay,” Jonas says with a sigh and a tired smile. He speaks more to himself than to Tadej when he adds: “We would never manage to make it work anyway.”
He believes his own words, but that is, obviously, a lie.

out of context lines!
thank you @indie-summer for tagging me!
rules: post a line from your current wip with no context
Guys I'm not gonna lie the words have been few and far between lately but here's a line (give or take a few punctuation marks).
“What?” Mathieu says. “No.” Mathieu looks down, following the trace of Wout’s eyes over his body, his grey sweats and the pink rec league t-shirt. “You think I’d wear this on a date?”
And I'm going to throw in one more from something else I'm working on in hopes that it will force me to actually you know, write more of it 🤪
“Is there a reason you didn’t tell me you’d be coaching with van Aert in the States?” Ben says, more slowly and more firmly.
Tagging @roglaert, @bakurasilver and @leadouttrain if you feel so inclined!
