WAIT SO YOURE TELLING ME… the dvd only version of the thh stageplay has an alt execution for mondo?!?! and it’s better than the game (I mean, it’s a low bar to cross but the small change is good). You best believe I’m gonna talk about it.

At first I was like “how are they gonna do the whole motorcycle thing” and turns out the motorcycle is made up by the monokuma dancers (and some umbrellas for the wheels) which works in terms of movement. It would be kind of awkward having a stagnant actual motorcycle on stage and dangerous if the motorcycle was actually driven around, so this is the safest and probably most creative choice to still simulate an actual moving motorcycle.

So there’s no cage of death in this version, at least I don’t think so. Mondo’s not tied up, he’s driving the motorcycle himself on what seems to be a street. There’s still fanfare and stuff, but it’s the ENDING that gets it. There’s another figure on another motorcycle next to him, wearing a white jacket. Everything kinda slows down so that Mondo can see him. He even says “aniki” in like, disbelief. But the figure is revealed to be monokuma disguised as Daiya, and Mondo, because he was distracted, ends up crashing and dying that way.

Which is????? I’m sorry, but it’s better. Despite being simpler, it has so much more emotion behind it. Simulating the event that has given mondo all of this grief and trauma and guilt. Making the last thing he experiences a bitter reminder of why he hates himself so much. giving him this hope of seeing his brother again, only to take it away. Granting his guilt-ridden and fucked up wish that Daiya never saved him that night. Like???? That’s so good!?!?!?! Oh yeah, and it’s not based on a horribly racist children’s book and no mondo butter being the only thing people take away from his character.

I’m sorry, I just found out about this, so my thoughts are all jumbled. I think this is also the version where he has to watch taka die for voting wrong before his own execution. I just thought that he was gonna get the same spear treatment, BUT APPARENTLY NOT!

 Danganronpa Actor au where all the characters are actors playing the characters in the Danganronpa TV show. And canon characters have played dfifferent characters in the series. All of the deaths are staged. and everyone is alive. 

Notes:

Danganronpa seasons 1-3 had the actors “As themselves” to give more a “Realistic feeling”. This was scrapped in later seasons excluding 4-5 since they were continuations of the Hope’s peak series. but brought back for season 53.

Some of the other actors who have Ahoges (Komaru, Toko, Miu) have played protags in other seasons.

Tsumugi’s parents have been writers for the Danganronpa franchise, so Tsumugi quite literally grew up with the series, including the seasons that aired before she was even born.

Actors:

Makoto previously played extras or bit roles. His Protagonist role in Trigger happy havoc was his star making role.

Aoi is a genuine star swimming athlete, but she had always wanted to get an acting career going. She was ecstatic when she got the callback for Trigger happy havoc. She went on to play other roles in the Danganronpa franchise.

Byakuya does have a prevalent acting career. However, he has usually played prince charming characters or  manipulative “All according to Keikaku” scheming characters. He felt his “Rich asshole” role on Trigger happy havoc was a refreshing take on the characters he was usually type casted for.

Celestia Ludenberg/Taeko Yasuhiro. Celestia is an actress who usually sticks to live plays and musicals. Celestia is also an idol who uses lots of classical and gothic elements in her music, she has a small, but dedicated fanbase. When it was announced that she’d be in Trigger happy havoc as her first TV role, some fans were enraged by how she was “Selling out” while others were excited to see their goth queen on screen.

Chihiro Fujisaki. Chihiro is known for playing both feminine and masculine roles, but they usually fell into a “Cute little sibling” or love interest role. Since they were so beloved for their time on Trigger happy havoc, they went on to play other characters in the danganronpa franchise. Even playing a protagonist role in season 7.

And God, that's what I love about the stage play. It has the limitations of time and what practical effects can be done live on an assumedly small budget, which breeds innovations like the wrong vote execution giving probably the best send off for Ishimondo in the canon Killing Game context, Celestia's "murder" of Sakura playing into her talent as a gambler, and now this simple but effective execution. It really is my favorite version of the THH story for that reason.

Yeah, the people in charge of the story changes for the thh stageplay were so based for their decisions.

They gave us not one, but TWO mondo executions better than the actual game. And as much as I love my guy Ishida, the way Taka was executed for voting for himself is a much more satisfying and thematically appropriate way for him to die. And Celeste as well actually using her ultimate for a trial. The first time she ever loses a bet is the thing that costs her her life. I’m sure Celeste enjoyers have other reasons why it fits better because they know more about her, but I think it’s a very good change.

Oh yeah, and didn’t Makoto let Junko live in the stageplay version? It wasn’t even a change made for timing purposes. I think the writer’s thought that Junko having to live with the fact that she failed and all that fun stuff was genuinely a better fate for her. Either that or they couldn’t figure out a way to give her a more heightened execution than the spears with all their restrictions so decided to omit her death altogether.

Also, the stageplay has little character moments that the game didn’t. Which isn’t really a writing thing, but I’m sure it comes down to some of the dialogue and the actors being a able to y’know act and add some flavor to their characters, physically. (Something that comes to mind is Taka saying smth about not running in the halls and then proceeding to speed walk across the stage with a big smile on his face. It’s so funny and makes him endearing to the audience right off the bat.) This is something that the game couldn’t do because it’s a VN and the anime could’ve done but… well we know what happened there.

All of this to say, I agree. The stageplay is so good. It’s one of those rare adaptations that actually manages to make changes to the source material that builds and adds more to the story rather than takes away. Ironically, it does this by shortening the story by a ton. But yeah, story-wise, the stageplay is the the best version of thh. In my opinion.

How do you feel about the criticism for trial 3 of Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc? I wouldn't say it's a hated case but I noticed some issues people point out. 1) Celeste was way too obvious as a culprit and her reactions were too out of character for anyone to not notice. 2) The "those guys" part wasn't a good argument to condemn Celeste since she could have been referring to the others who died before. 3) My gripe was how they spent so much time arguing that Hifumi was dead in the infirmary when that clearly wasn't the case as he woke up in the art room from Hina's tear meaning he wasn't dead at that time. 4) On that note, timing the BDA for both Hifumi and Taka was way too perfect and celeste/hifumi had no way of predicting that the Sakura, Toko, and Byaukuya would find Taka's body at the same time as the others would find Hifumi playing dead. 5) Not that I agree with this criticism but GamingMagic13 in his playthrough complained about Celeste's breakdown because she broke down too easily from the slightest pressure when she is the ultimate gambler who should be harder to break.

i'm not nyx but i'll give my thoughts.

celes as culprit being predictable is easy to say in retrospect. back in the day, the trend was towards characters like celes being massive red herrings. (at the time as well, sayaka-like characters were pure waifu bait and made it to the very end.) even so, we didn't pin her as a culprit in 2014. plenty of people didn't. it's difficult to exactly quantify what culprits qualify as 'predictable' and that's why it's an utterly rubbish condition to judge a culprit on. it's 100% predictable on a replay anyway, so i'd focus more on stage presence. celestia sure as hell has the best in her game.

this was more a case of poor translation than a problem with the actual case. here's the same statement in the lparchive translation:

there is the pedantic 'BUT WOULDN'T THE CHARACTER NOTICE' statement, but pedantic statement is pedantic.

3. they were trying to work out who the body discovery announcement was for, which is pretty reasonable when 3 people are saying it's for Character X and 3 are saying it's for Character Y. it's entirely reasonable for makoto, aoi, and celestia to assume monokuma jumped the gun on hifumi's death initially and the second discovery announcement was a catchup 'announcement 2: he's actually dead this time. lol.' . especially given celestia needs to believe her own bullshit.

4. this is like saying 'it was a plothole for nagito to draw the short straw and get picked for cleaning duty in SDR2-1'. celestia, were she not a gambler, would likely be SHSL Luck instead of makoto. she outright states herself she has insane good luck. ergo, the two parties see the bodies at the exact same time due to luck.

5. doesn't this contradict point 2, that she was referring to all the previous deaths and was at her limit with that? i know you said it wasn't your argument, but. she's trying to sell her panic to buy everyone's trust, 'oh if it made celes panic then it's got to be really bad'.
