Respawn and Relive

@thenightwolf51 who tagged me in this months ago, but I didn't know enough about Respawn to write something. I didn't forget! I just still haven't found much on him, so sorry if I get his character wrong.

They don't give him a name.

It's one of the first things he notices they do to dehumanize him. It's not like they see clones as humans- he's just a science experiment meant to keep the legacy of the League of Assassins alive, even at the cost of his life.

He is just there to be trained to follow commands, and if needed, he is spare parts for the Real Son. He is made from part of the same DNA as the Real Son, but that hardly matters to what should be his mother, as she does not feel anything for his biological father and thus feels nothing for the being created from the two DNAs.

He is the clone created by Slade Wilson- alias Deathstroke- and Talia al Ghul. She may not had a hand in his creation, as that was done by her father, but she had no issues using him.

Torment him. Rip him apart and put it back together just to see what happens.

She looks at him with the same gaze she would a sword. Valuating his worth by how well he can do in training, how healthy his organs are, and how he should be nothing but a loyal dog.

But he isn't. Not really.

If this was all he knew, maybe he would be the weapon they wanted, but he knows more. Remembers more. Yes, he doesn't have all his memories, but he has flashes- glimpses- of the life he had before the Leauge.

They would disapprove of the memories, which makes them all the more precious.

He can still clearly remember his mother- his real mother- a brilliant mind, his father's warm, solid hugs, and his sister's gentle eyes. He can recall his home's layout even if he can not remember the street or how far it was from his school. He can identify his two best friends' faces even if their names slip through his fingers like falling sand.

He also remembers his first name and the initials of his last.

Danny F.

He thinks he died before, waking up as the clone. He remembers standing inside a metallic cave- or a large hole in a machine?- and being electrocuted. He remembers the screams, the flashes of light, the pain, and even a glimpse of his best friends' horrified faces but not much else.

The next clear memory is looking in a mirror to see white hair and green eyes. The same combination he now sports as the Leguage's weapon and spare organ farm.

The memories after that are filled with harsh training, even more, brutal torture, and the reintegration that should his half-brother ever need them, he would give up his organs for the Real Son.

He is, after all, Damian Wayne's gift. He was created to harvest his super healing for the boy's body parts. Danny thinks he hates him, but he's not sure he can remember what hate is supposed to feel like.

He does remember what love is supposed to feel like.

Sometimes, when all he can do is lay in his cell, body aching as they test his healing factor beyond its limits- they cut off his left arm once, just to watch the tissue slowly regrow- he lets himself drown in his old memories, in the few dream-like sequences.

Some make sense, others don't. For some, he's a black-haired blue-eyed boy, and for others, he has white hair and green eyes.

Danny is sitting in class, eagerly taking notes on a topic he has been having trouble with-

-He's playing fetch with a small green dog, throwing snowballs into the air, flying after the excited creature-

-Danny is playing video games with a goth girl and a nerdy boy, laughing so hard he can't see the buttons on the control correctly-

-He's flaying alongside his sister, aiming his outstretched arm at a figure in the sky, shooting a green ray at the same time she does down below in her mechanical armor-

-Danny is helping his mother mix the dough for the cookies. He is swaying his hips to the song she has on the speaker. She's in her teal jumpsuit, having come up from the lab to do mother/son cookies as they do every Thanksgiving-

-He's testing the latest blaster with his father. They wanted to see if the auto-aiming feature was interfering with his flying. He flickers the white bangs out of his eyes as his father cheers from the roof while he takes aim-

Yes, Danny knows what love is supposed to feel like, even if he can't remember all the details, even if his full name evades him. He will escape the Leauage of Assiagins and find that feeling again.

Maybe he'll track down his biological father. Deathstroke does not know a clone was created by him, so maybe he will be willing to take him in.

It takes months, but eventually, they tell him Damian Wayne needs a kidney. Why? They don't say, but Talia knows her Beloved will donate his own, and she won't stand for it. She orders him to fulfill his duty as guards drag him to the operation table.

He grits his teeth as they strap him down and prep for surgery. Thankfully, they don't apply any anesthetics- they don't deem him worthy of a painless operation- so he has a clear head for escape.

The surgery has a thirty-window opening with no guards around. He waits until they are about to begin when he taps into the powers his memories tell him. He makes his limbs intangible, slipping through the restraints with great effort.

The medics only have a few seconds to be shocked before he is upon them. They lay in a pool of blood- not dead. His chest flares up in pain if he kills, so he tries to avoid it as much as his environment allows- as he flies through the walls. He has been planning here, so he knows what to do. Turning invisible, he passes under a helicopter scheduled for a month supply run.

By doing so, he does not appear on any radars using the large cargo as camouflage. Danny drops into the ocean as the alarms go off on that wrenched island, allowing his whole body to turn tangible. This way, the water does not slow him down as he flies deeper and deeper down, praying that they won't be able to track him the further he goes. When he gets to the part where everything is too dark to see- he picks a direction from where he came and hits top speed.

Traveling three hundred miles an hour, Danny escapes the League of Assians with all his organs intact, so take that Damian Wayne.

He has no real destination in mind but maybe, he can find the little town of his memories or maybe he'll find Deathstroke.

Maybe he will discover what the F. in his name stands for.

For now, he'll work under the name Respawn because that's a name he picked out for himself, and he'll do what he wants. He's no one's tool any longer.

(Miles away Tim Drake squints at the small dot darting from Nanda Parbat on his spying map. He's not sure what kind of misle Ra's just shot, but it's traveling fast, and he feels like he needs to phone this in.

"Hey B, we may have an issue." )

Dad Hood - part 2

Jason wakes up the next day. As he groggily rubs his eyes, he realizes that he is on the couch. Why is he sleeping on the couch, this appartement has a bed? And why are his weapons in boxes? When did he- OOF! Danny jumps on him, knocking the wind out of him. Oh, right. He had a kid now. Danny smiles wide at him. Good morning, Jason! Jason catches his breath: Good morning. Danny looks at the boxes: What are you doing? Jason sits up, telling Danny he was putting away his weapons. He had to safe-proof the house. Danny asks if he is putting up lasers. Jason says no? which earns him a sigh of relief. Jason asks Danny if he could sit down while he finishes clearing away the weapons. Danny says: No weapons outside the lab! Which distracts Jason, wondering what lab he is talking about. Suddenly Danny jumps off the couch, insisting he helps! Jason tells him no, but Danny is running to the knives on the wall. He trips over the shoes still on the floor from yesterday, and slams into the wall. Jason is worried, but Danny says he is fine! One of the knives falls from the wall mount and slices Danny’s arm. He lets out a yelp, and Jason rushes over. He consoles Danny and examines his arm. To his shock, his blood is green. The kid bleeds Lazarus water! A small sob snaps him out of it. Jason picks Danny up, realizing the cut will need stitches. He puts him on the kitchen table, and finds his tears are Lazarus water as well. Preparing the needle and thread, he tells Danny it will hurt a bit, but- Danny interupts him: I know. I had stitches before. That worries Jason. Why would a 5 year-old need stitches? He puts the needle in and Danny barely flinches, which tells Jason Danny must have either a high pain tolerance, or he was used to this. God he hoped it was the former. After he is done, Jason goes through his equipment. He was sure he had one still… There! He comes back and gives Danny a tiny stuffed bunny, one that would fit in his utility belt. It was useful when they needed to calm down a child in danger, but it worked for this too. Danny loved it, naming it Mr. Bun-Bun. Jason put Danny on the living room floor and sat on the couch to keep an eye on him. As Danny played, Jason was going over his theories. Why did the kid show up in his appartement? The easy option was that he was a spy, planted to keep an eye on him. Somehow, that didn’t seem right. Danny claiming he didn’t remember things, only to remember them after being reminded by a question was too strange to be used as a cover story. There were much better stories in that case. Plus, Danny seemed a bad lair. But to just show up in his appartement of all places? That couldn’t be a coincidence. He was sent here, but maybe Danny didn’t know or remember why. Jason sighed. He tried to figure out who would’ve sent him. Well, that was obvious. The League of Assassins were the only ones that had access to Lazarus water, and the kid was infused with it. The only question was whether it was Ra’s or Talia. But why would they make a kid like this? He feels a tug on his arm. Danny is holding up the toy. Mr. Bun-Bun want’s you to wake up! Otherwise Nocturn will get you! Jason smiled. Don’t worry Mr. Bun-Bun, no boogeyman will get me! He notices something. He gently grabs Danny’s arm, and pulls out the stitches. Danny’s arm is already healed! But it had been only an hour! Jason looked at Danny. The white hair, the green eyes plus the rapid healing? This kid was a second attempt at a Respawn.

if ur curious abt the dans that i mentioned here's a post explaining them yippee

split core is an au sort of based in the doppelganger au--its a branch-off of it really--where clockwork wasnt happy with dan's progression and decided to teach him a lesson by splitting his core into the vlad and danny halves--red and green. however, a third core had formed over time--the dark core--and a third dan came out with them who was just the personification of all his bitterness and hatred. they looked like this (and forgive the old art i need to draw them again soon)

and yall know doppelganger dan. hes just the redeemed dan from my doppelganger au/comic lol. he came back for revenge after TUE's events, but he was captured and (forcefully) rehabilitated by the fentons, mostly jazz. then his timeline's vlad showed up thanks to danny and threw him for a loop, but it ended up being what he needed to truly get better! also then later valerie showed up and things got complicated lol. this is him in case youve forgotten

i mentioned "apprentice dan" and that was basically an au where dan was clockwork's apprentice! it was a way for clockwork to look after him without having him interfere with timelines by being part of them. i didnt develop this au a lot, i kind of only had a design and one shitpost comic, but i look back on it fondly. here's the art (also very old now)

and finally, my attempt at a post-agit dan... i settled with just having him be in the clone vessel FOR NOW, because i kinda vibe(d?) with the idea of him being in the vessel to be anchored to the timeline but when he goes ghost he turns into his usual ghost form! here's the vessel design i landed on

i actually just remembered i DO have two more dans from crossover aus i made in the past. how the hell did i forget saiyan dan and phantomborne dan. ESPECIALLY phantomborne dan.

here's saiyan dan first--it was a dragon ball z crossover where jack was a saiyan with amnesia which made danny a half saiyan. i cant remember exactly how i handled dan in this, but i THINK i made dan some time travel situation where he came to the past to make danny an evil saiyan (theyre both half saiyans in the au). this was him

finally...phantomborne. this was my baby au that i was kind of obsessed with for a hot minute so i absolutely cannot believe i forgot about it until now. but it was my bloodborne crossover au where danny was a half beast due to a failed blood transfusion experiment and he could transform at will. dan, however, was a full beast, and he was still danny from the future--there was time travel that i implemented using the au version of clockwork, who kind of acted as a less creepy gehrman with time powers. i think i made him responsible for the reason hunters wake up from the hunter's dream and everything has respawned, like they want back in time??? idk lol. but yeah dan is a full beast in the future bc he was never cured of his beasthood + gave into his beastly urges. he's pretty sick and uses the beast cutter weapon. here's a pic of him with danny

2016 Anime/Animation Challenge Revisited ~ August + September (and that one in July I forgot)

The Corpse Bride (August) Like many, I grew up with the stop-motion animation spectacle that was The Nightmare Before Christmas, a charming gothic-style feature with singing skeletons, plenty of catchy musical numbers and a gorgeous The Corpse Bride is something of a Spirital Sequel to the former Halloween/Christmas OTP musical and, interestingly, is based on an old Jewish-Russian folk tale about a woman murdered on the way to her wedding. A gothic romantic comedy musical, we are told the story of Victor, the son of wealthy fishmongers, who's arranged marriage with the beautiful Victoria does not go as smoothly as he hoped. Because he accidentally proposes to another girl called Emily in the woods in the dead of night. Oh, and Emily is dead. That's important. We have our Corpse Bride. Like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride is a stop-motion film, giving it a very memorable visual appeal. The most clever example of style is the contrast between the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead. The world of the living (set during Victorian times) is deliberately void of colour, very drab and drained, whereas the underworld is vibrant, colourful and, ironically, more full of life. If you love critical analysis like I do, you'll have plenty of food for thought at the way it symbolises social class distinctions in the Victorian Era. The character design screams Tim Burton, especially in the forms of Victor and Emily, the latter very beautiful and iconic despite the whole being dead thing. As for the music, with a soundtrack by Danny Elfman, you know what to expect, standouts including "Remains of the Day," "The Wedding Song" and "Tears to Shed." The Bittersweet Ending and beautiful message from Emily herself gave The Corpse Bridge extra brownie points for me. Give it a watch if you want a romantic comedy with a different visual style and plenty of songs. Re-Zero -Starting Life in Another World- (+ Shorts) (September) Okay. This was the biggy. Think of a Trapped In Another World show like Sword Art Online, Hack and Log Horizon, but crank that Grimdark all the way up to eleven. You get Re:Zero, the story of typical high school student Subaru, who is mysteriously whisked away from his home in Japan to a fantasy world. He even meets a cute girl, a half-elf named Satella. Seems super magic and cool, right? Well, it would be expect for one thing. They're both murdered. And then Subaru wakes up exactly where he was when he first came to the fantasy world. It becomes clear very quickly that Subaru has something of a "Groundhog Day Meets Respawn" situation going on. Every time he dies in this new world, he returns to a certain " checkpoint" in the story (like the first day.) Make no mistake, Re:Zero may be a fantasy anime, but it's also pure Psychological Horror, Nightmare Fuel that saturates everything and, thus, makes almost every episode a Wham Episode. You're hit hard as you watch Subaru struggle to survive and save the people he grows close to and loves, only to fail and die horribly, often alongside his newly formed friends, then respawn, aware of his death and the knowledge from that "playthrough" (for lack of better word.) Break the cutie, much? Subaru himself is a very interesting part of the Re:Zero experience. His behaviour is something of a base breaker for fans, but we still get to follow his journey, seeing the best and worst of him. His blind adoration of Emilia, trying to remain strong in a very bleak situation, absolutely humiliating himself and at times behaving like an entitled prix (especially in episode 13,) suffering an absolute breakdown, his friendship with Rem, the despair and just everything. Love him or hate him, Subaru is what makes the show so enthralling as we suffer and feel with him. While shows like Sword Art Online start out strong with appealing premises only to falter as the series progresses, Re:Zero felt much stronger to me, keeping me engaged with the Respawn gimmick and watching what this does to poor Subaru as his sanity begins to slip (mega props to his Japanese voice actor, Yusuke Kobayashi.) Only the third arc really slipped for me, as it shifted from the Respawn thing and went in a slightly different direction, but it was still overall a very strong show. Personal thing, Emilia, Ram and Rem are absolutely adorable. <3 Rewatch (The One I Forgot in July, Oops) Thanks to working in an environment with plenty of televisions all competing to give you THE ULTIMATE VIEWING EXPERIENCE, I was exposed to a LOT of Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Like, over and over again. That's a lot of exposure and that's not including the countless times it's been on television. That could be why I'm sort of indifferent to it, compared to the other Ice Age films. Don't get me wrong, it's still entertaining and a good way to pass the time, but it's not the strongest film in the franchise. The third movie gives us Sid being kidnapped by a T-Rex Mommy (after he finds and "attempts" to raise her babies) and his friends, Manny the Mammoth, his mate Elly, Diego the Smilodon, and twin possum troublemakers, Eddie and Crash, set out on a perilous journey to rescue him. But not without the help of a seasoned, albeit slightly eccentric, weasel survivor with an eyepatch voiced by Simon Pegg. No, really. There's also a sweet part of the story with Manny and Elly expecting their first child, which injects much needed heart into the film. The relationship between Manny and Elly is adorable and this was the stronger narrative in Dawn of the Dinosaurs compared to the driving force behind their newest adventure. Diego was also an excellent source of support as he struggles with the prospect of staying with his friends or moving on to pastures new following Manny's new family. Card on the table, time. I was not too crazy about the whole "Sid and his baby dinosaurs" storyline. Yes, it was midly heartwarming at times and it was the eventual cause of his friends coming to his rescue, but boy, did it get dry after awhile. Compared to other silly, daft characters who exist solely for comedy relief, I feel there's no real depth or substance to Sid, so he outstays his welcome in lengthier ventures. He was tolerable in the first film, not so much now. Second highlight of the movie, Buck. Just Buck. His onscreen time is guaranteed comedy gold, especially given he's supposed to be the Weasel Man in charge of this rescue mission. Voiced to superb perfection by Simon Pegg, this experienced adventurer of the dangerous wild will make you laugh, as he is a walking, talking Crowning Character of Funny. I could easily watch a film dedicated to this character if he kept the same level of humour as he does here. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is an easy watch, much lighter and softer compared to the somber and perilous previous entries. This film has plenty of comedy (mostly from Buck or the Chasm of Death laughing gas,) very entertaining scenes of action and, generally, a movie you can just sit back and enjoy on a lazy day. Oh, and don't lose any sleep over Scrat. If you loved the shenanigans of that nut loving squirrel beast, he's still here and not alone this time.
