I was today years old when I found out about the Dolphin Pussy Jelly post and meme.
Where the fuck was this back when I was writing for the seaQuest fandom?! The only fandom I know of where a dolphin was one of the main characters?!
Tumblr media
If I'd known this back then, I would have been all over that shit - I wrote Darwin falling in love with humans a couple of times (one of which Poseidon came in to change the human into a dolphin so they could be together). So... yeah LOL

I bought a bunch of DVDs of dubious quality (Street Justice! My Two Dads!) and threw in the new bluray release of SeaQuest because what the hell, it's got my dead boyfriend Roy Scheider in it and also I like to support nice releases of old shit with actual extras
Anyway I suddenly remembered that I had very strong feelings about Nathan Bridger/that other old admiral guy in that one episode where they homoerotically did old man pushups at each other and decided to check out what kind of fic has been written for SeaQuest and. Who the hell is Kristin Westphalen and why are so many of you shipping her with Captain Bridger when he's clearly in love with that guy who is in one episode and whose name I can't remember

One of my classes this semester is making me go feral in a fun way. He's my department head and the class is over crime and literature and we spend a lot of time talking about what makes people commit crime right?
Let's put it this way, this man quoted Freud in reference to the ego superego and id and when I pointed out you should take everything Freud says with a grain of salt he replied with "Well, he was the first person to discuss things like this."
It's making me go feral because he brings up a lot of things that were scientifically disproven and writes it off with yeah but they were influential in their field and that's why we're talking about them.
I have no issue on discussing history like that, but he has no intention of discussing the fact that it's long been disproven. The way he talks, I have no doubt that this man still holds onto the notion of alpha of the pack and pheromones are real scientifically proven phenomenons. Like as someone whose hyperinterests led them down rabbit holes and scientific studies proving that we were kind to humans that could contribute nothing to society, his class makes me want to bite something.

Fun to see therians from certain clades with a famous type species but they're not that species. But it is annoying to be mistaken or to have every therian in your clade be that species when you go looking for others.
Fox therian but they're a Darwin's fox, has to explain every time that they're actually not a red fox. Ethiopian wolf therian who has to explain that this is actually something different from a grey wolf. Rough-toothed dolphin who has to deal with exclusively bottlenose dolphins being in all the tags and Discord servers, like people won't even specify their species because dolphin is culturally synonymous with bottlenose dolphin. Me being a black-shouldered opossum and people literally not even knowing there are other kinds besides Virginia opossum. Man.

seaQuest DSV S1 Ep2 The Devil's Window
Okay I have to start off by saying I have since learned that they never used a real dolphin on set. It's an animatronic and I am BLOWN AWAY by that. Like they have footage of real dolphins in the sea but Darwin that we see "talking" and swimming about the ship is an animatronic and that's clearly what all their effects budget was spent on (I joke. The effects were impressive at the time)
So the effects are never dropping below a 6 because of Darwin
Talking about this episode this plot is so predictable and silly.
Darwin gets poisoned with bacteria from a sample taken from a "black smoker" (a deep sea vent) as it's being taken up and of course gets sick. Which none of the many scientists and geniuses aboard the ship can figure out what happened even though they know he was swimming about when they were bringing the sample up.
Anyway we first learn he's sick because he swims up to the bridge and PSYCHIC BEAMS HIS DISTRESS AT BRIGERS AND JAXOR
Jaxor is a major character in this by the way. (I know its mean to call Ted Raimi Joxer but I say it with affection and also because they don't call his character by name in this ep. He's just Lieutenant)
Anyway yeah they got a Psychic dolphin as well who keeps saying "Light is Dark and One" which they eventually figure out is him being scared to die alone so they find his mom and let him go and everyone is very sad
Except for the scientist who is in charge of the Black Smoker research and is very upset that his project is being delayed because of a sick dolphin (Who also at the drop of the hat pontificates grandly about how they "entering the birth canal of the earth" and to "touch the bones of the world" He's great!)
Anyway Sad Bridgers is going to open a new sample container even though the doctor now knows it's what made Darwin sick and is frantically trying to call him but he can't hear her because it's loud. But it's okay! Because he's smacked in the face by an adult dolphin flying at him
Also Darwin's mom brought him seaweed which cured Darwin.
Lady Scientist: This has antibacterial properties and signs that it grew near a black smoker! Bridgers: But dolphin's can't swim down that deep Lady Scientist: Well if we knew everything we'd be gods not scientists
What.
It's a weird episode but Darwin is back and safe and Joxer is still Feeling Things from being psychic beamed by a dolphin and they gave the earth a suppository (and yeah they joke that that's exactly what it is)
What I was delightfully surprised by is that they end on a science fact! They tell you about when Black Smokers were discovered and some facts about it given by Bob Ballard an actual Marine scientist he has a wiki about him
Anyway the ratings:
Story: 5/10 -because I predicted most of the plot in the cold open
Acting: 6/10 - almost everyone is overacting just a little too much except for those who are overacting more
Cheese: 9/10 - psychic dolphin and also a man got hit in the face with rubber dolphin and that's not even getting to the earth suppository
Enjoyment: 8/10 - I am still happy to be here
Effects: 6/10 - Darwin is spectacular. Now I know I can see it but it's a very convincing animatronic. The lava was shit
Cringe: -2/0 - psychic dolphin, Darwin's mom bringing him medicine what the fuck
Aged Like Milk: -1/0 -but I feel mean about it just because our knowledge of deep sea vents has increased a lot so their info is a little out of date
Overall Ranking:
B Tier

Nostalgia Rewatch: SeaQuest DSV (1993-1996)
Tumblr media
One of my all time favorite tv shows from my childhood. I loved it so much when I was kid and upon rewatching, I think the first season still holds up pretty well. The CGI is outdated, naturally, but the set design and design of the SeaQuest still looks amazing and the animatronic dolphin still looks so freaking real!
The show was supposed to compete with Star Trek and therefor shows striking parallels in the general feel, themes, characters and storylines, but I love the unique premise of the show - while so many other sci-fi shows turned to space, this show turned in the opposite direction by focusing on the deep sea (with climate change and shrinking habitat/resources on land, the premise of people living underwater looks more and more realistic).
Set in far distant future of 2018 (!), the show is about a high-tech submarine with the task to explore, protect and help colonize the oceans.
S1 was a very promising start and focuses on different themes in a nice balance, switching between more grounded storytelling about the exploitation of the oceans and the environtmental and political conflicts involved, and more fantastical adventures with traditional sci-fi tropes like sea monsters and ghost ships (which makes it even sadden when you know how the show gets turned upside down the following seasons). The characters were overall likeable and made a good team, but my favorite character was and still is Darwin - did I mention already how much I love that fake dolphin? Because I do, SO MUCH!!!
The major issue with the show that is still prominent upon rewatch and will become even more glaring in the other seasons is that the show tried too hard to reinvent itself each season to gain a bigger audience with huge overhauls to the show's tone and themes, storylines and lots of cast changes. By the season finale it really does feel like saying goodbye because when the show returns for S2, it’s just not the same.
It’s sad to see the show never could live up to its true intented potential because of all the meddling behind the scenes, but in my humble opinion, at least S1 will always be worth a rewatch - if not for anything else, then at least because of Darwin...
Tumblr media
Now off to rewatching S2...

SeaQuest DSV
SeaQuest DSV (1993-1995) officially has three seasons, but I'm really only here to talk about the first two. Lol
Seriously, SeaQuest will forever go for me:
Season One: Amazing. Unique, riveting plots.  You basically like every character. Will watch any time.
Season Two: Quirky and kinda disappointing compared to first season.  Replaced some amazing characters with some really bleh and uninteresting ones. Fun to watch sometimes if in the right mood.
Season Three: We don't talk about SeaQuest 2032.  We don't even acknowledge its existence if we can help it.
SeaQuest DSV is set in a future time where man has colonized the oceans in search of new resources.  After escalating clashes, the United Earth Oceans Organization (UEO), a global coalition of up-world countries and undersea confederations, is formed to help settle disputes and keep the peace. An experimental submarine called The Seaquest is loaned to the UEO to aid in this endeavor.
It was designed by retired naval captain Nathan Bridger, who the UEO wants to convince to come out of retirement to command. Bridger, however, made a promise to his late wife to never return to the navy after their son died in action. He accepts an invitation to tour the SeaQuest, but initially refuses to accept command despite numerous machinations to attempt to make him do so.
Circumstances eventually do bring Bridger about, including the fact that the SeaQuest also acts as an exploration and science vessel - with a large crew of scientists led by Dr Kristin Westphalen (who outnumber the navy officers two to one as she reminds Commander Ford with a smile when he says it's a military vessel), as well as forming connections within the crew.
Like a lot of shows at the time, SeaQuest was mainly episodic. There wasn't a lot of carry over between episodes for plots aside from the continued political unrest the SeaQuest was responsible for easing. But most of that was also more episodic than serial.
However, I would say the first season of SeaQuest’s writing is above the level of most series at the time. Or even a lot of modern series. I can honestly say I didn't dislike a single one of the original cast of characters.  The found family feels were incredible.  They dared to touch on subjects that were quite controversial in their time. (Whalesong?  Nothing But the Truth?)
Plus, we had a dolphin for a main character.  I mean… name me another sci-fi with a dolphin character the team communicates with through an experimental piece of technology. Darwin is not a pet. His actions throughout the series is that of a fully acknowledged sentient being. Including the failure of the technology to translate his meaning because it can't fully comprehend his language, and a really heartbreaking episode where he grows severely ill, and the crew must seek out his pod to return him to. (I cannot watch that episode with a dry eye especially his and Bridger’s parting towards the climax)
A lot of controversy surrounds Season 2. The corporate big wigs not only decided they needed a younger “hotter” cast to attract younger viewers, but they also moved the show's production across the country.  Both members of the cast and the show’s fans spoke out against it all, but to no avail.
I will admit to finding second season more interesting as a rewatch years later than I did as a disgruntled fan in the day.  But it still cannot hold a candle to season one.
We had to give up Dr Westphalen for Dr Wendy Smith. And, I'm sorry, but there's no contest. Westphalen was an amazing, depthful character.  A mature and strong female character (And let's face it, those weren't easy to come by in 1993). And she and Bridger had the cutest flirtation going on. Wendy is nothing but a let down by comparison.  She lacks Westphalen’s maturity and poise. Instead coming across as arrogant and temperamental. And having them pair Bridger in a romance with her felt like a double slap in the face for season one fans.
We had to give up Hitchcock for Brody. Are we serious here?  We had to give up a tough, kick ass female commander, and her growing connection to the crew, for a completely uninteresting narcissistic male wannabe playboy?  Do I even have to say how terrible a decision that is?
We had to give up Chief Crocker, who was the mature voice of reason in the crew. Pretty much their bedrock. And what we got in return was Lieutenant Lonnie Henderson. Look, Lonnie as an addition to the crew would have been okay. She's sweet, and I have to admit the whole smuggled teddy bear thing was adorable.  She has some good interactions with the rest of the crew.  But in the end the characters we lost were still better than what they presented us with in her.
Okay, I will say that of the swaps, getting Piccolo and Dagwood in exchange for Krieg was probably the best swap out we got. Of the season 2 crew, they are the best new characters.  And, like Krieg, are capable of switching back and forth to carry both the more comedic scenes and the serious ones. But I still am disappointed at the loss of Krieg, who I felt like we had only begun to explore the character of in season one.
The season two plots were far more out there than season one, at times closer to fantasy than science fiction. There is a lot of lore used from the lost civilization of Atlantis to various sea gods, to pandora's box.  On one hand there were some good episodes (The pilot, Daggers, and Playtime are two of my favorites.), but neither the writing nor the cast were quite able to stack up to first season.
It also suffers from making The SeaQuest a pure military vessel, taking out the exploration and science side completely. Something that clashes with the character of Bridger - and the writing of Bridger in the season comes across slightly off. Like pre-series Bridger as opposed to the character as we knew him in season one.
I literally mean it when I say I ignore the existence of season three.  If season two suffered from the changed character line up and writing that wasn't quite equal to season one, then SeaQuest 2032 was a complete reversal of everything about the series. We jump decades into the future, go from protecting the peace to SeaQuest being a 100% war vessel with a new captain who is very much a by-the-books jerk, as opposed to the peace-loving, “I will literally resign on grounds of moral objections to orders” Bridger.  Despite some characters remaining, and even a brief guest appearance by Krieg as someone rebelling against the new militant UEO, the series doesn't even feel like SeaQuest at all. Hard pass.

Today, I have resolved to be defiantly happy. I wasted so much time in mental illness and despair. Like that quote you gave me last night from a dead emperor: “No one ever lengthened their life by worrying about it.”
Too true, Marcus.
On a cosmic scale, no human being, living or dead, can predict their own catastrophe. At best, some of us might acknowledge the inevitability. Like tadpoles (or the Little Mermaid), we can only guess what life out of water is like.
On a macro scale, I can’t control what other people think or do. I can only influence by example or persuasion. Radically, I can choose to love others more than myself.
On a micro scale, I can’t always control what my brain will do, even less what my environment will do. I will still have bad days and bad reactions. I will still die.
But overwhelmingly, I now understand that I have been given the grace of choice. And it is a grace, a gift. It is the maker’s mark. The signature of the inexplicable within us, a power that sparks first within our individuality, ourselves. I don’t think our choices can all be boiled down to hormones and Darwinism, neither can they be completely elevated to spirits and Almighty Fathers. A why is not required to understand: human beings have the power to choose hope in adversity.
Plants grow to the sun, but do they choose to? There are animals we know to be choosers: corvids hold grudges and skip down sidewalks, dolphins play in the surf, even our dog chooses which scritches she likes best (mine, usually). How many living things have such choices? And how similar are their choices to ours? Maybe we can’t know. But some of us on Earth share this unique, intrinsic, newly-evolved ability to choose.
I choose to grow.

Watsford Women: Headcanons of Gracie and Annette
(Or basically, every headcanon I created regarding the two!)
Gracie gave up her tail and distanced herself from Julia, Louise and Max so she wouldn't feel guilty about her choice.
However, Gracie felt a pull to go to Mako Island whenever she passed the island, whether it be from boat or from the mainland.
A few years later, Gracie married a navy officer, Walt, whom she met after a night of dancing at Cloudland and moved to a military base in Darwin, far away from her past and Mako Island.
Not long after that, she gave birth to Annette Sharon Watsford in November 25th, 1965.
Gracie frequently enjoyed taking Annette to the beach and taught her how to swim.
She lost her husband in an accident and moved off the base, taking a recommendation from a friend to take a hostess job at a restaurant in Brisbane, Queensland.
Mother and daughter moved into an apartment in Brisbane, which brought some comfort in familiarity and distance from Mako.
Gracie's enthralling personality brought in many customers and had her quickly rise through the ranks to Assistant Manager.
Annette became obsessed with cooking after learning from the chef after hours.
Gracie and Annette, were caught up in the Brisbane Flood of 1974. Stayed with family and friends until the floodwaters subsided.
Gracie found work - part-time as a seamstress and another as a waitress. She refused to move back to the Gold Coast.
Annette grows up to be a precocious, delightful outspoken young woman (who clashes with Gracie's free-spirited nature when necessary).
Proceeds to make dresses for Annette after she entered high school in the 80s. She had a love/hate relationship with 80s fashion and store-brand names.
Gracie meets up with Julia while she and Annette were out Christmas shopping. Its the first and last time she and Annette meet anyone from her past.
Watched "Splash" when it first came out in 1984 (Annette is 18/19). Gracie found the entire film hilarious, if not surprised by how on point Madison's mermaid tail and abilities mirrored her own once upon a time.
Gracie considers retiring early since Annette acquired a scholarship and takes to making handmaid jewelry from items she (reluctantly) has ordered from the Gold Coast.
In the late 80s, Annette introduces Gracie to her boyfriend, Charles - a marine biologist, whom she eventually marries. Gracie wonders if the universe is trying to tell her something.
Charlotte Elizabeth Watsford is born in 1991. Gracie named her for Charlotte's Web, her favorite book (and because Annette and Charles couldn't decide on a name prior).
Annette and Charlotte witnessed Charles die from a dolphin attack, which scarred Charlotte to the point she developed a fear of dolphins and the sea.
Gracie took care of her while Annette worked and told her stories about the ocean to help Charlotte overcome her fear of the sea but never of dolphins.
Gracie develops late-stage cancer that already spread. She's made peace with it despite Annette fighting with her to live.
Gracie is moved into a hospice in 1997 for the end of her days and Annette & Charlotte visit when they can. She's asked if there's anyone that she wants to contact (distant friends or family) before she goes, but refuses the opportunity.
Gracie Watsford passed away at 57 with her daughter by her side, before she goes home to tell Charlotte - who becomes inconsolable. Her body was cremated and kept in an urn Charlotte painted.

Treasure of the Mind
When a preserved annexe of the Great Library of Alexandria is discovered, many nations send their fleets to lay claim to its treasures. The UEO orders Bridger to mediate the dispute and sends a team of ESP parapsychologists to help the negotiations.
Requested by Travis Karlgaard
If there is one episode in the first season that exemplifies the mission statement of the series, it's probably this one. The exploration and discovery of ancient artifacts and cultures, consumed by the sea, waiting to be found again. In this case, the lost library or Alexandria - sort of.
This is the first collaboration between writer David Kemper and director Bryan Spicer. Those two were responsible for some very good first season episodes. Namely "Bad Water" and "Such Great Patience."
The underlining story of the discovery of the lost library is a solid enough hook to keep curious minds engaged with the proceedings. Where the episode falters is in the ESP parapsychologists. I don't feel they fit organically into this story and The ESP concept works better with Wendy Smith in season two.
The individual story of the ESP parapsychologists is probably sustainable on its own and would have worked better elsewhere. I'm not sold on them being here, reading minds of the other countries ambassadors. Two incompatible plot lines, trying to mesh.
A few episodes in season one featured Darwin and his telepathic abilities but they always felt unrealistic to me. We were still grappling with the dolphin talking at the time. Let's not go overboard.
From an action perspective, the episode is solid. Kemper, Spicer and John Debney all do excellent work in those moments. It's crisp, well paced and scored. Those are the elements form season one I recall so clearly and we're always done to a high standard.
The negotiations on the beach were ok I guess. If the other countries at the table found out that the UEO was using psychics, they'd nuke Seaquest and the UEO without hesitation. Some of the ambassadors were unnecessarily hostile and maybe that's the point, I feel it's a bit over the top.
The scene in the ward room with Bridger and the parapsychologists is pretty good and well acted. It does give a lot of dimension to them and the repression they feel they are under. I just wish it had been in a different episode than this. There is quality material to be mined from those three people and it would have been better served in an episode that dealt with that "imprisonment"
The season had recently gone through a producer change with David J. Burke taking over as showrunner from Tommy Thompson so I can forgive a lot of the uneven nature of this episode. It's solid, though not spectacular.

average seaquest episode Darwin is acting strangely he tells Lucas "bad dolphins..... metal dolphins are bad!" no one understands what he means. there's a wave of attacks where dolphins are sinking ships but it makes no sense no REAL dolphin would act this way ..... with Darwin's help they retrieve a METAL ROBOT FIN painted to look like it's from a dolphin. Ortiz or someone says "have you ever heard of a doctor O'Malley?" Nathan bridger frowns and says "you don't mean Preston O'Malley...... world renowned evil robot doctor who had his masters in dolphin medicine..... my close personal friend who died thirteen years ago......" and we'll guys if you can believe it doctor Preston O'Malley faked his death to make evil robot dolphins.
