hey friends help a girl build her corpus
i’m doing a final project in university on detective fiction--specifically detective fiction NOT like Sherlock Holmes or Murder at the Rue Morgue. The point of this project is to analyze stories where the READER is given enough information to figure out who did it. They don’t have to be murder mysteries, no overarching plots please.
I’m trying to build a corpus, so books with hard copies are fine, but I would prefer ones that are also available online for free or online in a .txt format for easier conversion into my tagging software. Specifically non-child-lit is preferred since I already have the whole selection of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Encyclopedia Brown, and I find that child-lit are much easier to find on internet archive.
I will have a budget for this project, but that’s all coming out of my own pocket, so it’s really a budget. Books that are in public domain/free are very much preferred.
Story recs of minority authors welcome!
rbs appreciated!

i think vampire stories should start reversing the 'that's a vampire myth' choices. garlic fucks a vampire up but they don't even blink at a stake to the heart. they turn into bats and fly around in the sun. it's fine

I am not a religious person, but sometimes you get a weird and interesting podcast in that vein. So... Let's talk about The Gospel of the Flood from Jonas Kyratzes and @astronautdown . The Gospel of the Flood is an philosophical, apocalypse, religiously-framed fiction podcast that seems to be set inspecifically in the modern day. On the day the continents started to sink into the ocean, our main character, a priest, loses his faith. It just evaporates from him. Gone. And so, he travels to visit his brothers in faith. He wants to see how they're fairing, do they still have their faith? What are they doing now that the ocean is rapidly rising? Now that the world is literally and metaphorically sinking. Can he do something/ anything in the face of global death? Can he/should he reclaim his faith? The show is introspective, gentle, and philosophical. As an atheist who was brought up Christian, believe me when I say, I'm not looking for "God" based content. But this is an interesting one. What does a miracle mean when someone survives a large scale event above all those other people? Can something be a miracle for one, when hundreds, thousands, millions die. Surely God can't have only looked at one person. It's desturbing when you zoom out and think about it for too long. What does a prophet look like? What would you do in the face of global annulation? 7, 15 minute episodes of moral philosophy that will either confirm your faith, or your atheism, depending on how you look at it. *Shrug* So, if you like thoughtful philosophy, maybe like if Almehem had a baby with The Tower? Or maybe with Still Lives? Then, The Gospel of the Flood is for you! #drama #dramapodcast #postapocalyptic #specfic #speculativefiction #fictionpodcasts #podcastsunday #trypod #podcasts #podcast #podcastrecommendation #podcastrecommendations #recommended #podcastsunday #audiodramasunday #gospeloftheflood #moralphilosophy #religion #christianity #christianityasaframingnarrative #jonaskyratzes #chrischristodoulou https://www.instagram.com/p/CpzEcInOjBG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Writeblr Introduction
I'm Victoria Nations (she/her), and I write horror fiction and poetry, often with monsters. I love the Gothic and the weird. Many of my stories are hopepunk. Even without happy endings, there is a light that shines through brutality.
I'm also a biologist, and my stories are often set in liminal spaces between wild areas and the mundane.
I'm a cis pan woman, and most of my characters are queer. I believe in creating equitable spaces that elevate marginalized voices.
My primary blog is on my website, VictoriaNations.com. You can find my publications and social media here.
I post about my writing and publishing, beautiful and odd things in nature, and creepy things that bring me joy. I look forward to connecting with y'all here.

[Flash] Sticky Justice
Tumblr media
[Flash Fiction: speculative, light-hearted. A responsibility-minded house spirit does battle with a useless robot vacuum.
Photo by Elena Mozhvilo on Unsplash.]
--
It comes awake again.
The days grow subtly darker each time it does, so its passage back into wakefulness cannot possibly be determined by the motions of the sun. This hateful disk of off-gassing plastic does not respect natural cycles. It doesn’t respect anything.
They think that counting the ticking of the house-clock would help understand this maddening problem, but their house-humans have changed ticking hands on a logical circle to something square that glares out with artificial light. With numbers, they suppose.
Numbers are also on the plate of perverse uncleanliness.
They’ve decided they don’t like numbers.
The rotational nemesis brushes over one of their many-toed feet, doing just as poor a job of cleaning that as it does the floor. It bashes itself against a piece of molding and changes direction, tragically never so hard as to knock itself senseless. With resentful determination, they follow it and collect scattered dust and delicate strands of fur. They find a forgotten whisker and collect that too, saving it for later. Aside from this single offering, the cat hasn’t been much help with the ceaseless twilight struggle, preferring to sit atop the enemy and watch their efforts with scornful curiosity every time it comes awake.
A shivering glop of something fallen from the house-infant’s chair the mealtime before now lies in the way of the unhelpful robot servant. So distracted are they with a missed pebble that they notice too late as the two shapes collide, helpless to intervene. Time slows as though they were once more in the Other Realm and then cruelly, cruelly speeds up again.
If they had a voice, they would scream.
Once the inevitable violence has reached its conclusion, all that remains of the glop is a growing neon smear stretching out behind the hateful disk and its furry charioteer like a footpath through a field of white carpet.
Too much. It’s too much and now abundantly clear that there is no point to waiting for another rise of the sun. They turn and release themselves from their cleaning duty for there is a duty greater still to perform: that of putting an end to this nightmare. Whisker in hand, they grimly march away to the black altar at which the disk slumbers each day after belching forth its meagre offerings.
It will never do so again.
There is an art to rehydrating the gummy refuse left behind by house-humans in crinkled, minty wrappers. The cat’s water dish is big enough to accommodate this effort and with the help of a bristle-ended plastic stick that acts both as a plunger and a paintbrush, a concoction is made and then spread with great deliberation.
Squidge squidge squidge.
A web of entrapping spell is woven at the foot of the altar, the cat’s whisker tied in an extravagant knot and placed at its centre. Around and around the sticky smears turn, beckoning and waiting with glistening patience. An inescapable spiral.
The hateful disk arrives after an eternity of banging around to no great effect. It hums and rattles forward as though satisfied with its sorry performance, but the thing begins to slow. The web has it now.
Around and around it turns, gumming up its hidden brooms and whatever secret thing gives it life. Soon it can do little more than twitch back and forth, back and forth. Unable to adapt. And sooner again…
Sooner again it is silent.
The house-spirit watches this ignominious ending a while longer and when satisfied, picks up their broom of mouse fur and gets to work. Today will be tended to with respect for the natural order of things.
Along the way, they find a gummy wrapper and set it aside.
Just in case.

Weird Puppy from the awkward angles~ I’m thinking the claws work slightly more like hooves, cause in the original game, their feeties look like hooves but in the original concept art they’re clearly claws. So I wanted to marry them. And that led me down the path of horny growths like chestnuts on horses, I think they would just kinda, grow. Also many thanks to everyone that liked the fused leg~ It’s a weird idea, but I’m glad some folks enjoyed it <3 It’s fun. I think after this weird puppy is done, I’ll do another that’s a full redesign instead of taking so much from the original. I of course, love the original design, which is why I started here lol

Hi!
Hi Tumblr! My name's Scallop, and welcome to my blog! I'm going to try to finally be active this year, after six(?) years of lurking on this site.
This is primarily going to be a reading and writing bookblr. I plan on posting book reviews, monthly reading recaps, and updates on my WIPs.
I mainly read middle-grade and adult specfic, with a focus on high (secondary-world) fantasy, but I'm also very interested in space-ship sci-fi (as opposed to planetary sci-fi), fabulism, fairy tale retellings, fantasy manga, and comics. This year is also my grand adventure into litfic, so I'd love any recommendations you might have!

TRIPTYCH is now available on @radishfiction! Kalp is a widower, burdened with an unimaginable grief, who escaped his dying world with nothing but his own life and a half-finished toy for a child that will now never be born. Gwen is a language expert covertly recruited for a United Nations initiative to integrate a ship-full of alien refugees into life on earth. She becomes Kalp’s teammate and lifeline. Basil is the engineer who lives with, and loves them, both. But he has no idea how to defend his new relationship against the ire and condemnation of a violently intolerant world. Part "District 9", part "Lost in Translation", and part "Stranger in a Strange Land", TRIPTYCH is a poignant, character-driven science-fiction story about tolerance, love, loss, and the desperate attempt to find connection in a world that no longer makes sense. Named one of the best books of 2011 by Publishers Weekly (@pwpics).
