How God Hates Us All made Slayer great again

In 2001 Slayer re-established themselves as kings of metal with their church-baiting warcry God Hates Us All.

In the summer of 2001, Slayer took to the road in the United States as part of the Extreme Steel tour with Pantera. On a bill that also featured Morbid Angel, Static-X and Skrape, one day Kerry King played the Texan cowboys from hell a number of songs from his group’s as-yet-untitled new album. Responding to a line from the track Disciple, Kerry was told, “Man, God Hates All would look [great on] a shirt.” It would, he agreed, but it would work better still as the title for Slayer’s ninth studio LP.

“How can you look at the world and think God doesn’t hate us?” wondered the guitarist. Kerry King was once asked to nominate his own superpower and answered that he would like to be able to set churches ablaze simply by walking past them. In Slayer World, this made him the band’s most qualified theologian.

“Wars, disease…” he said. “If we’re so perfect, why are we so fucked?”

God appeared to agree. God Hates Us All was released on September 11, 2001, mere hours before passenger planes were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the most Slayer-esque act of the modern age. Five years later, these atrocities would inspire Jihad, the band’s finest song of the 21st century. They would also throw the world into a state of flux for the next decade and more.

Ahead of the curve, the world of heavy music had been in turmoil for a number of years. The advent of nu-metal in the middle years of the 1990s saw the sound and look of metal change in remarkable and pliant ways. Tunings went down and guitar solos were eschewed. Long hair was no longer de rigueur. Baseball caps and vivid oversized sportswear became the wardrobe of the choice.

In truth, Slayer had endured a difficult decade anyway. Leaving aside the Seasons In The Abyss album, from 1990, the final 10 years of the 20th century had seen the band unveil just two further of albums of original material. Caught in a nu-metal storm, Diabolus In Musica, from 1998, provided a nod to these changing times. The Californian quartet’s most adventurous release – never again would they attempt to write songs as innovative as Stain Of Mind and Wicked – and by far their most intriguing, Slayer’s attempts to park their tank on a new cutting-edge lacked just one thing: an identity.

In this, the group were not alone. Iron Maidenslogged through a swathe of the 1990s with singer Blaze Bayley, a solid presence who lacked the charisma of his predecessor Bruce Dickinson. Even market leaders Metallica spent the second half of the decade attempting to escape the shadow of their 31-million selling Black Album. Between 1996 and 1999, the San Franciscans released four albums, only one of which – S&M – was met with anything approaching universal acclaim. The group did, though, start the 21st century in reassuring style, with the convincing I Disappear, from the 2000 summer blockbuster Mission: Impossible 2.

In the fullness of time, it would take Metallica a further eight years to re-establish their identity with the slightly-too-comfortable Death Magnetic album. Iron Maiden exorcised their recent past with ruthless efficiency by re-recruiting Bruce Dickinson and releasing Brave New World, in 2000, an LP that reassured listeners that normal service had been resumed. But it was Slayer who returned from their brief paddle into uncharted waters with the greatest sense of urgency and violent panache.

As an album, God Hates Us All reassured its constituents that the band had come home to the thrash-tastic turf that would not exist without them. More than this, over the course of a further three studio albums this stall would budge not an inch in the years that elapsed until the group called it a night in 2019. In his own blunt style, Kerry King explained that, “I want us to be the AC/DC of thrash. I want people to know exactly what they’re going to get when they hear us.”

Which is not to say that the band’s first album of the new century was merely an exercise in nostalgia. Recorded in Vancouver, God Hates Us All was produced by Matt Hyde, whose subsequent credits would include Deftones and Parkway Drive. Accompanying this modern sound were lyrics that eschewed the Satanic and occult themes with which the group had established their identity in years past with songs such as Altar Of Sacrifice, Spill The Blood, and Born Of Fire. In its own quiet way, this too was a nod to metal’s unlikely march toward self-examination.

“There’s no Satanic or supernatural elements to [the album],” Kerry King explained. “It’s just more about things that people can relate to. All our albums are angry, but this one is really pissed-off because it’s inward looking. I’m usually the Dungeons & Dragons spooky dude. On this record I made a conscious decision not to do that. I wanted to keep our dark themes, but also to write stuff that people can relate to. I tried to think about what pisses me off and why and how people could relate to that, rather than saying, ‘The Devil’s over there fucking your mother’, or something.”

Accompanied by a crisp music video for the song Bloodline – the band’s first since Dittohead, seven years earlier – God Hates Us All is not Slayer’s best album. But it is one of their most assured, and one which cemented their contemporary relevance to a new generation of metalhead. In 1991, the group capped off their first 10 years of active service with a live album titled Decade Of Aggression; yet the ’90s could have been called Decade Of Relative Uncertainty. But after years of laziness – only one track, the supreme Disorder, featuring Ice-T, breached the silence spanning 1990 and 1994 – and excursions such as the thrilling but contextually misguided punk-covers set Undisputed Attitude (1996), once again Slayer were back in a game of their own creation.

On the day that God Hates Us All was released, the Californians planned to fly to Europe to embark on the Tattoo The Planet tour, co-headlined by Pantera. Stranded in Dublin following the fall of the Twin Towers, the Texan group embarked on a row that would break their band apart forever. One week later, Kerry King and co. crossed the Atlantic and topped the bill unaided. In doing so, once more they stood alone as the kings of very, very, very heavy metal.

Diego Ricol Freyre recomienda: Diego Ricol Freyre recomienda: Ludvig Kennberg: “Me gusta ser el ingrediente secreto de Ghost”

El baterista, que grabó en “Opus Eponymous”, “Meliora” y “Prequelle”, da su primer reportaje. En un recorrido por la historia de la banda, explica por qué decide no girar y detalla el armado de cada disco. Entrevista con Rock.com.ar.

“Tobias Forge siempre tiene las ideas claras, y crea todos los concepto antes de ir al estudio. Pero mientras grabamos, algunas veces le propuse cosas que se me ocurrieron, y fueron quedando. Para mí, es un excelente compositor, porque sabe exactamente lo que quiere. Obviamente, a esas canciones les puse mi feeling y mi groove”, explica Ludvig Kennberg desde su casa en Linköping, Suecia.

Aunque su nombre recién apareció en los créditos de “Prequelle” (2018), el músico que está del otro lado del teléfono tuvo un rol enorme en la carrera de Ghost. Grabó todas las baterías de tres de los cuatro larga duración de la banda -incluyendo canciones como “Ritual”, “Cirice” y “Rats”-, y en más de una ocasión fue tentado por Tobias Forge (la mente maestra detrás del grupo, que personifica a Papa Emeritus y a Cardinal Copia) para que se incorpore a la banda en vivo.

“Realmente no sé por qué le dije que no, simplemente sentía que no quería hacerlo -explica Kennberg del otro lado del teléfono-. No tengo una buena respuesta para eso. Pero apenas ‘Opus Eponymous’ (2010) salió, casi lo llamo para decirle que me había arrepentido. Unos meses después mi mujer se embarazó, así que fue positivo no haber empezado a girar”.

El propio Tobias Forge debió dar el visto bueno para la realización de esta entrevista, nada extraño para un grupo en que el secretismo siempre fue clave. Ahora, recorramos el camino de Ghost de la mano de uno de sus componentes más importantes.

OPUS EPONYMOUS: EL COMIENZO

-¿Cómo fue tu primer contacto con la banda?

-Un amigo mío, Joakim Kärling, tenía un estudio de grabación y una tienda de música en Linköping. Una vez, mientras estaba en su local, me mostró el MySpace de Ghost -donde Tobias había subido tres demos- y me contó que iba a trabajar con ellos. No volví a pensar en eso, hasta que estando de vacaciones en Grecia, Joakim me llamó y me preguntó si quería ser el baterista. Cuando volví a casa, Tobias vino y me mostró algunas maquetas. Un mes más tarde empezamos a grabar “Opus Eponymous”.

El baterista Ludvig Kennberg habla en exclusiva con Rock.com.ar y acá podés escuchar la charla completa.

-Más allá de que Forge siempre entra al estudio con las ideas claras, ¿en qué canciones pudiste aportar más de tu estilo?

-Recuerdo que la parte de batería del medio de “Con Clavi Con Dio”, en la que dice “Satanas, we are one…” con una voz enojada, fue idea mía. “Ritual” es una canción muy groovera también, con su feeling y todos los fills. Al disco lo hice simplemente por diversión, no tenía idea de que Ghost iba a ser tan grande como hoy. Grabar las baterías nos llevó menos de una semana. Los bebés de Tobias recién habían nacido, así que trabajábamos desde las siete de la tarde hasta bien entrada la madrugada. Y por eso tomábamos un montón de energizantes para mantenernos despiertos, una versión barata del Red Bull (se ríe).

-Ese disco también contó con otros músicos. ¿Lo grabaron como “banda”, o cada cual lo hizo por separado?

-No, a mis partes las hice estando sólo con Tobias, en el estudio “White Light”. Toqué arriba de los demos de sus guitarras, y luego él regrabó las violas. Mi kit de Opus fue el mismo en todas las canciones: un redoblante signature de Ian Paice (Deep Purple), un bombo Sonor de 22’’, toms vintage Ludwig de 13’’ y una chancha Ludwig.

-¿Habías ido a clases de batería?

-Empecé a tocar cuando tenía seis. A esa edad mi papá me regaló un pad de práctica, y a los siete tuve mi primer instrumento real. Ahí empecé a tocar, directamente. Había visto a un tipo en la tele, en un programa sueco que pasaban durante el verano. Me gustaba su manera de tocar, y creo que él me dio ganas de meterme en esto. Fui a clases desde los ocho hasta los trece, pero me aburría, así que dejé y simplemente fui a casa a tocar arriba de Metallica y Slayer, en mi sótano. Eso era mejor (se ríe). A los diez años tuve mi primera banda en el colegio, y se llamó… ¡Organ Grinder! -un término relacionado con la masturbación-. Mi compañero era fanático de Marilyn Manson -el músico tiene una canción llamada así-, pero yo era más chico y no tenía idea de lo que significaba. En nuestra ciudad, en los ‘90, había un montón de bandas de hardcore y punk dando vueltas. Así que cuando tenía trece empecé a meterme con el hardcore más old school. Cada tanto me agarran las ganas de tocar eso de nuevo, porque tiene un montón de energía y es genial. Me copaban mucho The Hope Conspiracy, Converge y los suecos de Outlast.

-Ahí se entienden las influencias de “Opus…”, aunque no figurás en los créditos del disco. ¿Era algo que sabías de antemano?

-Sí, lo habíamos hablado. Tobias me avisó que mi nombre no iba a estar.

-¿Y cómo te sentiste cuando el álbum tomó relevancia y no aparecías?

-No me molestó para nada, yo no estaba tratando de ser famoso. Me gusta ser el ingrediente secreto de Ghost, y me divierte entrar en YouTube y ver los covers de batería que suben. Y como no saben que yo que grabé en esos discos, puedo comentarles y decirles: “Está muy buena esta versión” (se ríe). Después, la gente se terminó enterando de que era yo. Pero lo del anonimato no fue un problema, simplemente estoy feliz porque amo la banda y su música.

En 2013, Ghost lanzó “Infestissumam”, su segundo disco. Ludvig no formó parte de la grabación porque la banda ya contaba con un baterista estable, que también tocaba en vivo. “Cuando Tobias me preguntó si quería ir de gira, le pasé el número de Aksel Holmgrem. Este último me llamó al toque, y me dijo ‘¡¿Qué carajos?!’. Le respondí: ‘¡Dale, hacelo!’”.

Holmgrem dio su último show con Ghost el 27 de septiembre de 2014 (incluso tocó dos veces en la Argentina). Cuando se fue del grupo, la banda justo estaba por entrar a grabar “Meliora” (2015)… así que Tobias Forge llamó a su viejo amigo, Ludvig Kennberg, para que volviera.

“MELIORA”, EL REGRESO A LAS RAÍCES

El tercer LP de Ghost fue el que los catapultó definitivamente. Su principal single, “Cirice”, ganó un Grammy en 2016, y el álbum llegó a los primeros puestos de venta en Suecia y Finlandia, y al top 10 en los Estados Unidos. En su país de origen, incluso, fue disco de platino.

-Ahí, el sonido mejoró muchísimo. ¿Tu batería también había cambiado?

-Sí, enormemente, fue una diferencia inmensa. Para “Opus…” había usado una mezcla de partes vintage y algunas nuevas, mientras que en “Meliora” tuve un setup vintage Gretsch, con los tamaños que usaba John Bonham (de Led Zeppelin). Había grandes platillos y un bombo de 26’’, un rack de 14’’ y dos toms de piso, uno de 16’’ y el otro de 18’’. Aunque a “Spirit” lo grabé con uno de 24’’, porque era más fácil para tocar rápido. El drum doctor del disco fue Ross Garfield, un superhéroe que trabajó con todos (incluyendo a Metallica, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra y Jane’s Addiction).

-¿Cómo llegaron al sonido? ¿Probaron con material alquilado?

-El productor, Klas Åhlund, le comentó a Garfield lo que quería y qué tipo de sonido buscaba. Así que Ross llevó lo que coincidía. No pedimos prestado mucho, de hecho tuve el mismo redoblante durante todo el disco, aunque un par de veces cambiamos los parches. No recuerdo qué marca era, porque le habían sacado la etiqueta, pero creo que también fue un Gretsch.

-”Meliora” es muy oscuro. ¿Qué discos te influyeron?

-Diría que ”Ride the lightning” (1984) de Metallica y “Sagan om ringen” (1970) de Bo Hansson, un sueco inspirado por El Señor de los Anillos. Era como jazz psicodélico, y le hizo su propio soundtrack. También “Diabolus in Musica” (1998), de Slayer.

-Todos nombran los clásicos de la banda, pero se olvidan de ése…

-Sí, y a ninguno de mis amigos les gusta, realmente (se ríe). Soy el único al que le copa ese estilo moderno de Slayer, y no tan old school.

-¿Los preferís con Dave Lombardo o con Paul Bostaph?

-Con Lombardo, aunque Bostaph toca ahí. Me parece que Dave tiene un mejor feeling.

-¿En cuánto tiempo grabaste “Meliora”?

-En dos semanas. Viajamos a Los Ángeles, a EastWest Studios. Antes de ir había escuchado sólo dos canciones y media, y me dieron los demos… ¡el día después de que llegué allá! (se ríe). Así que fuimos por dos días a un estudio llamado The Village, para que yo pudiera practicar. Ahí conocí a Adam Kasper -ingeniero del disco-, y la grabación fue otra vez sobre los demos, no como una “banda” tocando al mismo tiempo.

-Antes mencionaste a “Spirit”. Debe ser una de las canciones en donde más se nota tu virtuosismo.

-Sí, me encanta ese tema. El último día, Ross vino con muchas baterías para que probáramos cosas tribales, así que toqué un montón de toms, bombos de piso y varios palillos distintos. De hecho, la intro de “Spirit” se construyó a partir de diez tomas que hice tocando un montón de toms. Hubo muchos overdubs. También grabé en “Zenith”, que es el bonus. En “Meliora” y en “Prequelle” toqué las baterías separadas de los platillos, y creo que también hicieron eso con “Infestissumam”. Así podés enfocarte en cada parte y obtener una mejor mezcla, porque los platos no se van a meter con el sonido del redoblante o de los toms, por ejemplo. Realmente disfruto de grabar de esa forma.

-Y Tobias te convocó otra vez para tocar en vivo.

-Sí, ¡pero de nuevo le dije que no! Igual me dio un par de semanas para pensarlo, porque ellos estaban grabando las guitarras en Estocolmo. Ahora ya sabía que eran una banda consolidada y que iban en serio. Pero como mi hija había nacido en marzo, y yo ya me había ido en diciembre a grabar el disco a Los Ángeles… de vuelta me negué. Además, también estaba girando con Dead Soul, en tours más cortos.

-Lo gracioso es que con ellos tocaste en el mismo escenario que Ghost, pero no al mismo tiempo…

-Sí, les abrimos en Escandinavia (se ríe). Fue muy loco.

“PREQUELLE”, LA REAFIRMACIÓN DE UN CAMINO

Si “Meliora” había dado buenos frutos, el último disco de la banda -que salió en junio de 2018- fue una constancia de que el grupo estaba yendo por la ruta correcta. Aunque posee un sonido más accesible que “Opus…” y su predecesor, hay canciones como “Rats”, “Faith” y “Pro Memoria” que mantienen el estándar oscuro de Ghost.

En los charts de Billboard, sólo fue superado por Kanye West y por Post Malone. La revista Metal Hammer le concedió 9/10 puntos, al igual que Blabbermouth; y otras como Kerrang! y AllMusic le dieron 4 estrellas sobre 5.

Nuevamente, Ludvig Kennberg grabó en todas las canciones, incluyendo los dos bonus tracks (“It’s a sin”, de Pet Shop Boys; y “Avalanche”, de Leonard Cohen).

-¿Cómo fue el approach, siendo ya un grupo enorme?

-(Piensa). Mmm… creo que la producción fue mayor en “Meliora”. El estudio era más grande y quedaba en Los Ángeles. Estaba Klas, y un montonazo de gente en los controles. Eran como cuatro o cinco tipos: uno que producía, otro que co-producía, uno que manejaba el ProTools, también Tobias… para mí, grabar las baterías de “Meliora” fue más complejo que las de “Prequelle”. En el último estuvimos solo yo, Tobias y Tom (Dalgety, productor). Fue divertido, y se sintió más fácil que los anteriores.

-¿Por qué? ¿Porque ya sabías lo que Tobias quería?

-Sí, fue una de las razones. Y la otra era que me mandó los demos antes de ir a Estocolmo y grabar. Así que tuve un par de semanas para practicar, que lo hizo más fácil y más divertido. A eso, sumale que Tom es el mejor. Es un excelente tipo, humilde, y súper profesional, pero no es el productor clásico que simplemente te grita y se enoja con vos porque hiciste algo mal. Se sentía como si estuviera grabando con un amigo, aunque no lo conocía de antes.

-¿Coincidís en que es un disco más popero que los demás?

-En un sentido sí, pero lo llamaría “ganchero” o “hitero”. Me gusta cómo suena: parece muy feliz, pero después leés las letras y te das cuenta de lo contrario. ¡Me encanta ese tipo de álbums! Diría que ”Faith” y “Miasma”, son mis dos favoritas, pero me copan todas. Es muy dinámico, hay para todos los gustos.

-En “Prequelle” apareció por primera vez tu nombre en el booklet. ¿Cómo te sentiste?

-Realmente bien. Fue genial tener mi nombre en el disco, porque estoy muy orgulloso. Creo que es el mejor de Ghost, de hecho. Y a diferencia de los otros, lo hice con una gran Tama Birch Bubinga, Star Classic. La conseguimos gracias a la marca, porque ellos tenían un representante en Suecia, así que vino al estudio y la afinó.

-¿Cuánto tiempo llevó grabar tus partes?

-Se suponía que iban a ser dos semanas, pero lo terminé en una y media, incluyendo los dos bonus. Fue bastante rápido, y luego grabamos algunos toms extra, como overdubs. Sé que Tobias tiene un montón de temas en su cabeza, pero las canciones que están en el disco son las únicas que oí. Los demos estaban muy bien hechos, sonaban excelentes, pero obvio que las baterías eran programadas. Todo lo demás era tocado por él. En el sentido de la voz, el resultado final no suena como los demos, porque obviamente estuvo agregando melodías y más cosas.

-¿Solés leer las reviews de los discos?

-Sí, de hecho vi una crítica de “Prequelle” en la que un periodista hablaba de mí, y fue divertido. Está copado ver lo que piensan del sonido y de los temas. No me importa si les dan una estrella o diez, sólo me interesa ver lo que escriben.

“Ahora mismo estoy por empezar a grabar mi propio material. Estuve tratando de hacerlo por cien años, más o menos -dice Kennberg-. También me llamaron de la banda The Blank Page, y vamos a grabar en algún momento del año. Aunque ahora quiero disfrutar del verano con mis hijos. Está bueno contar con estos pequeños trabajos, pero también tengo un montón de tiempo libre”.

-Ese proyecto propio, ¿va a salir bajo tu nombre?

-No sé cómo lo voy a hacer, vamos a ver qué pasa. Ahora mismo estoy pensando que va a ser algo instrumental, con sintetizadores, baterías y loops, y eso. Pero va a estar bueno tener algunas voces también.

-¿Lo vas a llamar a Tobias como invitado?

-(Se ríe). No pensé en eso, no creo que tenga el tiempo para mí. Al menos no por ahora.

-Forge siempre planea tres o cuatro años adelante. ¿Te propuso grabar de nuevo con Ghost?

-No hablamos sobre eso, así que no tengo idea.

-Si tuvieras que elegir una canción de los tres álbumes que grabaste con Ghost, ¿cuál sería?

-”Cirice”. Ésa fue la primera que, cuando la escuché, supe que iba a ser “la gran cosa”, el hit del disco. Y después ganó un Grammy, así que fue genial. La amo y nunca me canso de oírla. Hicimos un montón de tomas en esa ocasión, en parte porque cuando fui al estudio era casi la primera vez que escuchaba los temas, y también porque Klas buscaba un montón de sonidos para armar una buena toma combinando todo.

-Y ahora que tus hijos son más grandes, ¿qué harías si Tobias te llamara para hacer un tour corto con la banda?

-(Piensa). Creo que aceptaría, pero el problema es que siempre hacen recorridos larguísimos (se ríe). Él ama girar, y no lo culpo. Es muy divertido tocar en vivo.

-Ojalá que en el futuro te sumes a Ghost en el escenario, entonces.

-Ya lo veremos (se ríe). Por lo pronto espero poder trabajar con ellos de nuevo, ¡y que me convoquen para los discos que se vienen!

Slayer zum letzten Mal in Zürich

SLAYER – FINAL WORLD TOUR

Seit über dreissig Jahren lärmt es aus dem Sunshine-State Kalifornien unter dem Namen Slayer hart und gnadenlos in alle Himmelsrichtungen. Nach vielen Schicksalsschlägen, Kontroversen und vielen grandiosen Auftritten folgt nun nach so langer Zeit seine Abschiedstour.

Die Titanen des Thrash-Metal bringen auch beim letzten Mal die volle Ladung auf die Bühne. Kaum eine Band kennt den schmalen Grat zwischen musikalischem Einfluss und menschlichen Kontroversen so gut wie Slayer. 1981 von den beiden Gitarristen Kerry King und Jeff Hanneman († 2013) gegründet, hat sich die Band zu einem wahren Stück Musikgeschichte entwickelt. 11 Studioalben, unzählige Auszeichnungen, tausende von Konzerten – und Slayer haben kaum etwas an Energie und Härte verloren! Ohne Frage gehört diese Truppe neben Metallica, Anthrax und Megadeth zu den „Big Four“ des Thrash Metal. Doch immer wieder sorgt die Band und ihre Mitglieder auch für Kontroversen, sei es durch einzelne Äusserungen, zwiespältige Texte oder beinahe zu Tode diskutierte Songtitel.

Dem Erfolg von Slayer hat dies auf jeden Fall nicht geschadet. Eine der erfolgreichsten Thrash-Metal-Bands überhaupt sorgt auch bei der finalen Welttour für kreischende Soli, sägende Riffs, druckvolles Drumming und hysterisch schreiende Vocals! Aber auch die Special Guests sind bei dieser Abschlusstour ein grosses Highlight und werden für mächtig Stimmung sorgen. Slayer wird durch Lamb of God, Anthrax und Obituary unterstützt.

Darkest Greetings and Salutations my Family, how is everyone? I am doing quite well myself, taking a moment to think of all those who fought and those who continue to fight for this country and it never ceases to amaze me how ignorant our government is when it comes to the needs of our returning soldiers! This Veterans Day take a moment to say THANK YOU to all those who volunteered to go to war and put their lives on the line for the rest of us! ***ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL!*** Veteran's Day Sermon Hail Satan Great Dragon and strongest of the War Gods hear us! On this day we honor those who put their well-being aside and voluntarily risked it all to fight on behalf of millions of people they don't know and will never meet! The kind of sacrifice that is made by our soldiers is not anything to ever take lightly; they not only put their own lives at risk, they also leave their families behind to worry about them for the duration of their tour. This not only deserves acknowledgement, it deserves the respect of EVERY SINGLE PERSON regardless of whether they "agree with the war" or not! When a soldier enlists, no matter which branch of the military they join, they are saying "tonight you can sleep easy, no one is going to hurt you if I have anything to say about it!" They say this not only to their own families and friends, they say it to the person working the checkout at the supermarket, the school teacher trying educate the children, the pump jocky's and grease monkey's keeping people on the road, but that's not all... They are also saying to those protesting the war that even they will live to see another day because our soldiers are willing to fight, and die, for their right to protest. That kind of dedication is rare especially when people act not only ungrateful but resentful towards those who are willing to put themselves in harms way so that they don't have to! Father please watch over our troops wherever they are stationed, be it at home or abroad, help them to keep it together despite how much strain they may be under so that they are able to maintain order in their spirits as well as within the ranks! Help them to stay alert and aware of their surroundings so that nothing goes unnoticed! Help them maintain a high morale so they don't lose themselves to the rigors of the combat zone! Help them to keep marching forward until such time as they come marching home! Marduk, you who fought against the most difficult enemy one could ever go up against please also help the families of enlisted soldiers to come to terms with the decision that their loved ones have made! It is not selfish for any family or friend to become upset at the idea that their loved one will be shipped off to a war zone, however, they need to respect the choice that was made! Help those who have family and friends actively deployed to maintain a sense of hope and courage, especially those with young children, so that they can in turn give their deployed loved ones a boost when they it! They say that war is hell and they're right it is, not only are you subject to horrific events and sites on a daily basis but you also come face to face with their own mortality. Those who survive the conflict oftentimes return home to hostility from those that they selflessly protected because those people did not support the war. They also come home to find that their benefits and income are non-existent, many find themselves on the street and even more find themselves waiting for months and sometimes years just to see a doctor. One absolutely unacceptable and unforgivable reality is that our government treats are returning soldiers as though they are expendable and would have been better off had they been killed overseas! The proof of this is in the fact that several VA hospitals are dilapidated and infested and also that several returning soldiers died just waiting to be seen at all! No one who willingly put their own life on the line to protect an entire nation from the devastation of war on its own soil deserves to be treated like a discardable pawn on a chessboard! No one who voluntarily travels to foreign lands with the intention of helping the citizens of those countries learn to defend themselves against their enemies deserves to be ignored by the government that sent them there! No one who sacrifices everything including their own peace of mind deserves to end up on the streets reliving the nightmares in their heads because they are not given the psychiatric attention they need to be able to deal with what they've been through! Father we know that because we were given free will to do whatever we want that we can't expect you to intervene on any one sides behalf, if people want to start these wars then people need to fight these wars and also figure out how to deal with the aftermath of these wars. You are not responsible for the decisions or the actions of the human race, both are entirely at our discretion and as such both are nobody's responsibility but our own! The one thing that we have going for us as a race is that when push comes to shove that many of us will band together even if we had issues with each other in the past! We do this because humans are social creatures even if we are not always social towards each other, we do it as a matter of survival not only for ourselves but for those we care about as well! There are those who allow their petty differences to prevent them from aiding those that need it, they are the ones who are soldiers fight and die for so that they can be that selfish and cruel! Thankfully these self-centered dolts are few and far between so they have a tendency to be the loudest group because they're so full of their own shit that everybody else just has to hear about it! When they start getting noisy the rest of us just need to be noisier, let them know that even if we don't agree with the war that we still have to support our troops because they did take it upon themselves to enlist so the self-righteous jackasses didn't have to! So the next time you see someone on the street with a sign that says that they are a veteran, don't just throw a couple bucks at them and wish them the best, instead try to help them to become gainfully employed or even find volunteer opportunities! Many of our veterans want to work, most of them do not want to be on public assistance, there is something to be said about maintaining a level of dignity! One of the most frustrating things for all of our veterans is trying to live with the war that is still raging in their heads! PTSD is a very real and very debilitating psychological condition that oftentimes impedes our veterans from being able to fully return to civilian life because with the more severe cases it does not take much to trigger it: for example the slamming of a car door can cause them to duck for and fireworks on the 4th of July brings back memories of being constant hail of bullets which is why many veterans cannot attend fireworks displays because it is too traumatizing for them! These are only two examples of the kinds of issues our veterans deal with on a day to day basis and it's compounded when our government does not afford them access to any kind of medical attention! Our veterans deserve better than this! Father we know that you are always with them from the day that they enlist until the day that their deployment ends to guide and watch over them; we ask that when it comes time for them to march off into the sunset, no matter whether it is on the battlefield or after they return stateside, that you spread your wings and give them the hero's welcome home! Where we may fail in the human world when it comes to taking care of our soldiers, please rise to the occasion as you always do and let them once again know the peace and tranquility that was stolen from them during their deployment! HAIL SATAN! "Warrior's Code I will gather my strength and I will gather my will, to face the enemy in any battle! I will not run and I will not hide, I will march with my unit side by side! I will keep in my heart my friends and family, their support helps me through this bloody calamity! As I sit under the sky appreciating the sound of silence, I know all too well it may suddenly erupt in violence! I count the stars and my mind starts to drift, recalling family and friends life's most precious gift! I do what I do not for fortune or fame, but so that the lives of others will remain the same! To keep my countrymen free from pain, anguish and despair is the reason I chose to be here! I put on the Kevlar then pick up my gun and I wonder if tomorrow will be the last time I see the sun! I am grateful for my sisters and brothers in arms, we have each others six and we defend one another from harm! A promise was made to defend our country from all enemies domestic and foreign and that promise will be kept no matter how severe the situation we are in! In our bases, on our tanks and on our shoulders that flag will always wave symbolizing the land of the free and the home of the brave! Though we may be far from our friends and family, we know in our hearts we are one even though we are many!
