would that i had finished the deranged comic sans powerpoint 101 for sweeney todd by now i would link it here but as it is it still needs a lot of work before i'm even remotely comfortable posting it hOWEVER that doesn't mean i can't still be of some assistance

(disclaimer: i am about to throw a LOT of information at you and you are by no means obligated to try and digest it all at once please instead do so at your leisure/your level of interest instead)

sweeney todd 101 cliffnotes version for people who want to get into sweeney todd by someone who is way too invested in this show

sorry to anyone who doesn't like the office this is the only cold open that matters to me in this particular stage of life rn

so for those who aren't already familiar with sweeney todd (or have a passing familiarity with it either via sweeney todd related tiktok content or other similarly related content consumption) one of the first things i would recommend starting with is the 2007 tim burton film since it's a pretty good place to start (and also easily one of the best film adaptations of a musical imo). you can find it on hbo max or on youtube for 3.99 if you don't have and/or want to pay for an hbo max subsciption. (you can also 🏴‍☠️ it because capitalism sucks. remember to sail the seven seas* responsibly!)

now if you're interested in other productions (and/or not particularly interested in the film) there's the 2014 half concert half staged proshot starring emma thompson as mrs. lovett and christian borle as pirelli that you can find on youtube for FREE (here is a link to act one and another link to act two AND a link to the opening on it's own because it is absolutely PHENOMINAL i genuinely can't recommend it enough).

there is also the original 1982 proshot starring some of the original cast such as angela lansburry (unfortunately len cariou, the original sweeney does not reprise his role BUT george hearn does a phenominal job in the role). you can find this one on amazon for 3.99 to rent or it and a plethora of other musical proshots on BroadwayHD for 11.99/mo but unless you're interested in watching other musicals and plays on BroadwayHD i would suggest renting it on amazon or 🏴‍☠️ it for free if you know where to look (i honestly don't know what pirating musicals looks like outside of yt bootlegs and i am still very very new to actual bootleg trading so you'd have to ask someone else)

and finally, my personal favourite, the 2023 broadway revival. unfortunately we only have five singles that have (officially) been released (which you can find here on spotify) but we also have the official ballad of sweeney todd performace from this year's tony awards AND there IS a way to watch it if you are like me and can't afford to fly to new york and see it at the lunt-fontanne theater (just dm me for the details). this is quite possibly my favourite version of this story and if great comet wasn't already an indicator that josh groban is a great fit for broadway this DEFINITELY is imo.

other recommendations include sideway's video essay on the music in sweeney todd, christine baranksi's version of worst pies in london (and her criminally underrated version of a little priest with kelsey grammar in a 20th anniversary concert version that i would give my left kidney to see in full), imelda staunton and michael ball's version of a little priest from a 2012 revival, patti lupone as mrs. lovett playing the tuba in the stripped down 2005 broadway revival, lin manuel miranda's sweeney todd themed hamilton parody for broadway cares featuring the funniest jonathan groff cameo i've seen in my life (and the recent ham4ham version performed by the current 2023 revival cast) and my last braincell when confronted with literally any sweeney todd related content these days.

13 de noviembre de 1967. Una solitaria figura se detiene ante la puerta principal. Era George Trevor, el popular arquitecto norteamericano responsable de su diseño y construcción.

Oswell E. Spencer lo había invitado a su inauguración, junto con su familia, como agradecimiento. Se lo tomó como un hiato antes de comenzar con la reforma de Ashford Hall solicitada por Edward Ashford, a quien había conocido por recomendación de Spencer.

Jessica, su esposa, y Lisa, su pequeña hija de 14 años recién cumplidos, serían las primeras en acudir. Luego iría él después del trabajo…

Pero al llegar, no pudo ver a su esposa e hija por ninguna parte.

Entró en la casa.

13 de noviembre de 1967

Terminé de trabajar, me fui de Nueva York y aparqué frente a la mansión por la noche, sobre las 6 p.m. El espacioso vestíbulo principal. Las ornamentadas dos escaleras que conducían al segundo piso… joder, lo echaba de menos.

Tardé cinco años en erigirla según las directrices de Spencer, mucho más de lo previsto, pero mereció la pena.

Vi a Spencer descender las escaleras a mi encuentro. Exculpó la ausencia de Jessica y Lisa explicando que se habían marchado para visitar a la tía Emma, que había caído enferma.

En el comedor de la primera planta, brindamos por la mansión. Spencer había dispuesto sobre la alargada mesa de caoba una colección de lujosos platos de fina cerámica. Arriba destacaba una estatua de Rodin colocada junto al pasamanos de la galería de la segunda planta. La estatua parecía observar el servicio con envidia.

Tratándose de una inauguración, no me imaginaba como el único invitado. Aparte del tic-tac del reloj de pared, un desolado silencio reinaba en la estancia.

Echaba de menos a Jessica y Lisa.

Spencer me contó que la fiesta inaugural se celebró hace tres días, y que Lisa tuvo la oportunidad de tocar el piano tanto como quisiera. Al parecer, había tocado la sonata para piano número catorce de Beethoven, la preferida de Spencer. Dijo que aplaudió mientras la elogiaba por su talento. Soñé despierto con la sonrisa de mi hija.

Me sentía muy solo sin ellas.

14 de noviembre de 1967

Spencer me hizo una visita guiada por el lugar. Me quedé boquiabierto con el excesivo esplendor y extravagancia de la decoración. Pinturas de Da Vinci, estatuas de Rafael… En una habitación había colocado una estatua de piedra cuyos ojos eran piedras preciosas. En otra desfilaba una hilera de armaduras medievales. Todo formaba parte de su colección privada.

Me cuestioné el porqué de las trampas.

18 de noviembre de 1967

Sin noticias de Jessica y Lisa.

No podía comunicarme con ellas porque la línea telefónica estaba sin instalar. Fui a beberme un café a la galería de la segunda planta, donde se había colado una hueste de cuervos que no paró de graznar.

Mal presagio. Tenía la sensación de que alguien me observaba. También vi algo extraño en el patio… Detrás de la catarata artificial descubrí una escalera no incorporada al diseño original.

Tres hombres vestidos con batas blancas aparecieron de repente. ¿Quién es usted? Por favor, no nos haga perder el tiempo dijo uno de ellos, como si me regañara, y me sacó de allí. Su bata blanca desprendía un ligero olor a desinfectante. ¿Y estos quiénes eran?

20 de noviembre de 1967

Perdí el mechero.

Me lo regaló mi esposa por mi cumpleaños. Creí haberlo dejado en la habitación con el rifle de caza.

¿Alguien me lo robó? ¿Jessica y Lisa no van a volver?

Estaba ansioso…

Spencer se rio cuando le comuniqué mis preocupaciones. Le aseguré que no podía soportarlo, que me marcharía para reencontrarme con ellas.

21 de noviembre de 1967

Empaqué mis cosas y me despedí de Spencer. Él me siguió hasta la primera planta y entró en una de las habitaciones.

Tras su desaparición, me topé con un hombre ataviado con una bata blanca. Miraba un cuadro. Era uno de los tres hombres del patio.

La vida es larga y a la vez tan corta, susurró. Luego sonrió y se rio.

Algo me golpeó la cabeza y quedé inconsciente.

24 de noviembre de 1967

Tres días encerrado. Es por una cuestión de seguridad dijo el hombre de la bata blanca mientras me pasaba un plato de comida cruda.

Y me di cuenta. Las dos únicas personas que conocían todos los secretos de la mansión eran Spencer y yo. Si yo muriese, Spencer sería el único.

Tenía que escapar. ¡Pero no podía zafarme de las trampas que yo mismo creé! Unas cosas se desprendieron del techo para caer sobre mí. ¡Arañas! Aplasté a varias de ellas intentando escapar.

Me escabullí de la celda para enfrentar la realidad de todas las trampas y mecanismos que debía memorizar para lograr salir de la maldita mansión.

111 years since the Titanic sank.

There are many stories about the sinking of the Titanic and the people who sailed on her. This my story; originally published in Bygone Kent magazine issue:37 Number 2, over 8 pages.

The Titanic sank on the 15th April 1912. Of the 2,223 onboard, 1517 were lost.

Many were searching for a new life in the United States. One of these was 36-year-old Kate Buss 1873-1972 from Sittingbourne, Kent. She was making the journey alone to marry her Kent-born fiancé, Samuel Willis in San Diego in California. Kate survived and they married three weeks after the disaster.

Samuel Willis ran a tailor’s shop in Sittingbourne, first in the High Street and then later at 110 East Street. Kate Buss was born at 37 Shakespeare Road, Sittingbourne. In 1901 her father James Buss was listed as a grocer-postmaster at 68 Shortlands Road, Sittingbourne.

Samuel Willis sailed to America in 1908 and settled in San Diego and then opened his own grocery store. Saving enough, to send money back to Kent to pay for his wife-to-be voyage. Kate sailed on a second-class ticket for E-Deck, number 27849, which cost £13.

At 11.40pm on the 14th April she heard a crash and went on deck. Meeting a friend, she returned to her cabin and put more clothes on, then returned on deck. Along with a female friend they were escorted to lifeboat Number 9. Kate later wrote to a friend, Elsie Sparkes in Halling, Kent: “ I’d just my nightdress, my dressing gown and a long coat. It was terribly cold by the iceberg.”

“ I’ve lost everything to remind me of home, all my photographs, my letters, everything except my rings and watch.”

Lifeboat Number 9 was lowered at 1.30am and it was picked up by the Carpathia at 6.15am. The ship picked up 712 people from 13 lifeboats. The rescue ship arrived at Pier 54 in New York at 9.25pm on the 18th April.

Staying in the east side of New York at the home of; Reverend William Dalziel 1855-1935 and his wife, Emma 1856-1921, formally of Greenstreet near Faversham. Kate wrote to her mother in Sittingbourne.

“ I do hope you don’t believe most of the newspaper stories. I am well and want you to know this. I have been preserved from reporters, who have been trying to find me.”

She later left New York and started the journey to San Diego, where she was reunited with Samuel Willis. Kate wrote several letters to friends in Halling, near Rochester. “ They had to haul me up the last few steps of the rescue ladder and then someone wrapped me in a rug. I had hot brandy and water in the saloon.”

The memory of the terrifying climb, she said would stay with her for the rest of her life.

Kate married Samuel Willis as planned on Saturday, 11th May 1912.

Kate Willis never spoke in public about the tragedy but did so in private, when she became emotional. She successfully avoided the press and didn’t testify to either, to the American or the British boards of inquiry.

In one of the few public statements she made, Kate said: “ I willingly would have waited, if I had known how few lifeboats there were.”

On the 12th July 1972, Kate Buss Willis died in Independence, Oregon. On her gravestone her daughter added a,  “ Titanic survivor.”

(Opinion) Peace will have to wait, but cracks might be showing — Vladimir Frolov, columnist and former diplomat (Carnegie Endowment):

Frolov returns to previous arguments he’s raised in essays published by Carnegie, stressing that both Russia and Ukraine are still too hopeful about the prospects of continued warfare for peace talks to be plausible. He says the war’s key question remains whether the result will change Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders. While Washington tries to maintain “coordinated narrative messaging” with Kyiv, U.S. leaders have indicated that their main goal is to deny Russia any new territorial gains from the invasion it began on February 24, meaning a return to a status quo that leaves Crimea and parts of the Donbas under Russian control. While a successful counteroffensive has Kyiv talking about restoring Ukraine’s 1991 borders, Frolov says the West will likely try to force the Zelensky administration to accept a more “realistic” resolution.

Moscow has deliberately kept its “rhetorical formula” about the war as flexible as possible. Though there are no indications that the Kremlin is seriously considering a negotiated settlement, the Putin administration has managed to convince many in the Global South and “certain circles” in the West that Zelensky isn’t actually interested in ending the war. Citing pro-negotiations comments by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the U.S. and articles published in the American media by several foreign policy experts (Samuel Charap, Miranda Priebe, Emma Ashford, and Charles Kupchan), Frolov says cracks are beginning to appear in Washington’s unconditional support for Ukraine as some American decisionmakers worry about being trapped into support for Kyiv without any “voting rights” (Frolov’s phrase). Moreover, the Kremlin still wants to negotiate a stop to NATO expansion and the division of Europe into spheres of influence (even if the issue is dead for the West), and Moscow ultimately thinks this diplomatic track is more important than peace talks with Ukraine, says Frolov.

After Russia’s retreat from Kherson, Frolov argues that further decisive Ukrainian military victories are unlikely, and he says Kyiv’s goal of reaching the February 24 boundaries by the end of the year is unattainable. Real prospects for negotiations will arise only when Kyiv decides it has more to lose than gain by refraining from a settlement, and when Moscow finally loses faith in a revived invasion that can retake formerly occupied lands (and when Putin comes to fear the loss of territories Russia still controls).

Sunshine Tour: Victory for Ellen Whitaker and ‘Korlenski’ in the Ashford Farm Trophy

Derin Demirsoy with ‘O-Kannarock’ and Marie Demonte with ‘Epona Du Quesnoy’ complete the podium in this competitive 150 class.

Vejer, 9th March, 2024.  Top British rider, Ellen Whitaker had an impressive win with her lovely 9yr old mare, who is by the legendary stallion ‘Cornet Obolensky’, ‘Korlenski’ in the 1.50 m of the Andalucia Sunshine Tour,  Ashford Farm Trophy, Longines Ranking, speed class held in the Milton arena.  There were 69 horses in the class and she stopped the clock in 67.62s, over a second faster than her nearest challenger, Turkish, Derin Demirsoy with ‘O-Kannarock’ (‘Rock’n Roll Semilly’ x ‘Kannan’).  In third was the French rider who has had a plethora of good results here with various horses, Marie Demonte.  Today she was riding  ‘Epona du Quesnoy’.  In fourth was Egyptian, Abdelrahman Ikram with ‘Graduate HBC’ and fifth was Belgian,  Yves Vanderhasselt with ‘Nikita Van de Koekelberg’.

The Big Tour 1.45, was won by Czech, Ales Opatrny with ‘Holland TN’;  second was Chloe Winchester with ‘Equine América Billy Take That’;  third, Italian, Luca Moneta with ‘Jolie Coeur D’Avril’; fourth, Nicole Lockhead Anderson with ‘Chinoubet PS’ and in fifth, French rider, Guy Jonqueres D’Oriola with ‘Aloma De Grandcamp’.

There was also a Czech winner in the Big Tour 1.35, Albert Pisarik with ‘Chapo 2’.  Second was Spanish rider, Lucía Fernández Hidalgo with ‘London’s Bella’; third British, William Whitaker with ‘Lancaster’;  fourth was Japanese, Eiken Sato with ‘Chacco’s Grand Daughter PS’ and in fifth was Irish, Jack Ryan with ‘Carramba L Z’.

Spanish rider, Ismael García Roque with ‘Brazilia DK Z’ was the winner of the Medium Tour 1.45,  followed by:  Swiss, Peter Burri with ‘Dubai 64’;  Spanish Kevin González de Zárate with ‘Cantuccini 17’;  American, Michael Hughes with ‘Lazy’ and finally in fifth Luca  Moneta with ‘Folie de Chalusse’.

The Medium Tour 1.40 was won by Swedish Ebba Danielsson with ‘T-Gavoli Z’.  Second was Irish, Emily Turkington with ‘Diwali de Runya’;  third, Spanish  Álvaro Castro Román with ‘Brigitte’;  followed by Mexican, Claudia Michel with ‘Angela de Kreisker’ and Swiss rider, Yannick Jorand  with ‘Chaclago PS’.

There was a Spanish win from, Francisco de Asís Arango in the Medium Tour 1.30 with ‘City Meel’ moving well up from their fifth place yesterday in this class.  Second was British, Joe Fernyhough with ‘Calcourt Countdown’;  Yannick Jorand took third with ‘Daylight VH Maressahof Z’, and fourth was German rider,  Leonie Böckmann with ‘Four Roses 13’.  In fifth was British, Joe Fernyhough with ‘Calcourt Supersonic’.

Albert Pisarik had a second win today this time in the Medium Tour 1.20 with ‘Conada 2’.  Second was British, Joshua Hutchins with ‘Billy Serafina’;  third Spanish, Antonio Mariñas Soto with ‘Qute Hero TC’;  fourth, British, Grace Shudall Hughes with ‘For Free Z’ and in fifth, Swedish rider, Olivia Munkberg with ‘Invicta del Maset’.

British, Emma Stoker was the fastest in the Small Tour 1.40 with,  ‘Q Seven’ and finished with almost three seconds in hand over Spanish, Rubén Gómez Crespo who was second with ‘Allblack de Gressoux’.  Third was the Polish rider,  Lukasz Piksa with ‘Lucky Horse’;  fourth Spanish, Xabier Zabaleta Susperregui with ‘Arloy de Beausejour’ and fifth, Portuguese,  Nuno Tiago Gomes with ‘Chaccora’s Stakko PS’.

The winner of the Small Tour 1.30 was Mar Pérez Fernández with ‘Diane du Val’.   Second was French rider, Laura Monier with ‘Cathinka B’.  Third and fourth places went to Spanish riders, Marta Garat Macías with ‘Julieta del Amor’ and Rafa Iribarren Baptista with ‘Etincelle de la Rosa’.  Fifth was British, James Pinkney with ‘Billy Bon Soir’.

The winners of the classes in the CSI1* were: Spanish Fernando de los Santos with ‘Isba Caps’, in the 1.30;  British, Jessica Williams with ‘Miss Bubbles’, in the 1.20;  Belgian,  Juliette Berghmans with ‘D Day de Lison Z’ in the 1.10.

Tomorrow we continue with eight classes in the CSI4* including the Longines Ranking Small Tour Grand Prix: there are three CSI1* classes and the National Pony Championships continue here at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour:  which is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of Andalucía, through Tourism and Sports of Andalucía.
