Let the Ashes Crumble (WIP)
DS3 fanfic with Eygon/Irina
excerpted wip below the cut
“Eygon?”
He did not reply, but she could tell he was listening. After traveling together for so long, one could sense these things — the slight shift in his weight, or the attentive grip of his gaze. Irina wished he would show her his wound and let her heal it with her palm, imbued with the lost souls of ages past.
In the face of his stubbornness, she inched closer. “What if,” she began, but before she could continue, she bit down on her lower lip. Irina averted her face, letting the loose strands of her silver hair billow over her eyes.
“What?”
“What if I failed?”
Again, silence.
Irina understood silence. She could read in it the tumultuous churn of his emotions. Confusion, astonishment, and, unexpectedly, wonder. Eygon wasn’t entirely displeased by this question, but she knew he resisted the temptation to push it further; to stoke the fire she had unwittingly lit.
“You can’t fail,” he eventually answered. “Besides, I don’t see how. One more step, and we’re almost at the kindling.”
Irina smiled. Of course, it wasn’t a matter of whether or not she could. It was a question of volition. What if, in the end, Irina no longer wanted to bind herself to sacrifice? To be a firekeeper meant to conclude her journey. By extension, it would be the end of Eygon’s, and Irina was well aware of what happened to knights who have fulfilled their duty.
Nothing but an end. The finality of death. Freedom from the undying curse, and an eternity where they must be parted, their souls divided through the many cycles of rekindling.
She wished she could relay these fears, these nightmares which plagued her with each passing day. They had left Carim together on a mission, but now Irina no longer knew if it mattered. Carim must have become ruins since they left, and the people they once loved might be long dead. They had no one else left. She had no one else left, and once Eygon is gone, there will only be darkness, and the writhing souls that nip and bite at the sanctuary of her mind.
With a sigh, Irina sat on a boulder next to Eygon. She sensed his discomfort, his body growing rigid now that she drew closer.
“What if,” she tried again, “I want to fail?”
To her surprise, his answer came quickly.
“Then it is my sworn duty,” he said, “to put you to rest.”
Irina expected as much. She felt neither dread nor fear. Only relief. If she had to die, let it be by his hand; let it be by his side. Better than to wait, forever alone for a Chosen Unkindled, trapped in the memories of countless Firekeepers before her.
“I’m glad, dear friend,” she said, her breath light and airy. “If it’s by your hand, I don’t mind. Only,” she hesitated, tilting her head so it rested on his pauldron, “touch me one last time before you fulfill your oath.”
Next to her, Eygon is unmoved. Beneath his helm, he seemed to mull it over. What turmoil must he be going through? She wondered. She would never know, of course. He would never remove his helm or his armor. They would never know each other beyond the roles they failed to play.
“So this is it, then?” Eygon muttered under his breath. His tone was churlish, as if she had asked him to complete a tedious chore. “You’ll give up, just like that? This knight wasn’t sworn to protect a failure.”
Irina chuckled at that. “I know. You deserve a better maiden — one who would not fail you.”
He scoffed at that, as if her sentiments were a nuisance to him. Then, just as suddenly, his shoulders went slack. Only then did Irina notice that he had not moved her hand away from his pauldron.
“You did not fail me,” he said, a little more pensively. “Perhaps it is I— no, no use arguing about that now.”
Irina nodded. She understood. They both failed, in the end. They both found devotion in something other than their quest, and in Carim, that was the most profane act of all.
“Then let us stay here,” she said, moving her hand so that her palm rested atop his knuckles. “Let us wait and keep our lonely watch. So long as you’re with me, I won’t mind the dark.”
His heavy armor clinked raucously as he turned and rose abruptly. “I will agree to no such thing,” he solemnly declared. Without another word, he marched right off.
Irina called out to him. She shot her hand out, hoping it would graze his figure.
There was nothing. Eventually, the sound of his footsteps faded. He left her alone. Unable to perform his duty as a knight, he had abandoned her. Perhaps, she thought with great comfort, he would make the return journey home.

Well she's a lost cause. Couldn't even become a Fire Keeper. After I brought her all this way, and got her all ready. She's beyond repair, I tell you.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?
i was really cold on gehrman for awhile, bloodborne was my first souls game and after The Line i was reluctant to talk to him at all lmao. then online 99% of the gehrman takes i saw were just people shitting on him or being. Fucking disgusting about miss doll so i kind of saw him as the posterchild for Fans I Hate. once i started doing more lore digging i learned to appreciate him more tho 🫶
honestly fans tend to make me like characters more rather than less lmao. i wouldn't care about gehrman or laurence that much at all if it weren't for seeing other people who were first 😤 it's fun seeing people who are passionate! gives me more insight into things i wouldn't bother caring about otherwise. ive definitely had characters i felt were overrated or mischaracterized that i hated seeing so much of, but i love soulsborne npcs too much.... i just tend to block takes i don't like x.x
oh shit wait jaskier from the witcher. i won't elaborate but him for sure
13. worst blorbofication
hrmmmm. when fans take a character like idk lautrec or fuckin. eygon from ds3 or something and act like everything they've ever done has been justified. not in a funny he's never done anything wrong and i love him :) kind of way, but in a misogyny kinda way
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
eh i don't really like super canon-divergent aus, like ones that are so far removed from the source material they basically aren't the same character anymore. what if nothing bad or interesting ever happened to morgott elden ring and he wasn't an omen and he didn't live in the sewer and he wasn't the veiled monarch of leyndell and he worked at a coffee shop? idk what if? that's just a totally different guy.
n bad characterization is too vague but i hate when they're boiled down to one personality trait (or just trait) and nothing else :/ souls games are fun bc all the characters are so deeply strange and it's really a shame when that's lost in favor of bland archetypes

I’ve been trying to find concept art for any of the maiden-type characters (note: not the firekeeper chars) from DS and I swear I can find nothing. I have the Design Works books for 1 and 3 and these are some of the only NPCs with no concept art there. Even trying to find something for Maiden Astraea (whose outfit is clearly the basis for the others) hasn’t been successful, and I think Anastacia has art in the first book but her clothes are not exactly the same as the ivory-colored set the others wear and I’m really specifically wanting the one like Reah’s or Irina’s because of how it ties in lore-wise to Thorolund and Carim. I’ve been playing around with a design for something and wanted to see if this concept art existed because I like seeing the elements that didn’t make it into the games, but there’s like…nothing I’ve been able to locate.

Working on my own Soulsborne setting I've been able to jot down a number of tropes and archetypes that are repeated throughout the games.
Warcrime Woman who embraces a dark power she is proficient with yet rejected in order to protect a person, ideal, or secret: Lady maria, malenia, Sister Elfriede
Old Woman: Eileen, Lady Butterfly
Heroine (sometimes is a profession that is pursued but is always a position considered noble and somber in its weight of responsibility): maiden in Black, Emerald Herald, Fire Keeper, Finger maidens, The Plain Doll, Roderika
butcher cannibal woman: maneater mildred, Anastasia
Animal Covenant Leader: Wolf of Farron, Forest Hunter
woman of rebirth: Rosaria, Rennala
Cynical Soldier: Hawkwood, Crestfallen Soldier
Blacksmith/Weaponsmaster: Andre, Hewg, Boldwin
Washed up man (Typically Old) who has perpetuated a dying and empirical cycle but can still whip ass: Gwyn, Gehrman, Radagon
Patches: Hyena, Untethered, Unbreakable, Spider
Chosen One maiden: Irina of Carim, Ranni
Her Knight bound by Duty: Eygon, Blaidd, Vilhelm, Rogier
Forsaken Woman who is rlly nice: Karla, Fia, Arianna, Yuria the Witch
Yellow headwrap invader: Yellowfinger Heysel, King Jeremiah, Old Monk
Just a good fucking guy and warrior: Siegward, Solaire, Alexander
Wizard mentor who presents "hard" but is a softie: Sellen, Orbeck.
Servitors of the "good" gods and their will: Frampt, Two Fingers
Their direct opposites: Kaathe, Three Fingers
master of the Dead: Nito, Godwyn
REALLY FERVENT AND DEVOUT CHURCH GOER: D, Alfred,
If there are any others pls let me know there's something about seeing the parallels between these characters in these amazing series.

OPEN UP! I GOT ASKS!
8. What are your 3 favourite areas and why?
16. Who is the most underrated NPC in your opinion?
29. What are your 3 favourite non-boss enemies? (behave)
35. What ingame faction would you belong to?
HELLO BIM I HOPE YOU ARE BLESSED WITH TESCO BAGUETTES ON THIS FINE DAY
8. What are your 3 favourite areas and why?
Okay so in no particular order:
Castle Cainhurst (Bloodborne): I don’t even know if I have to explain tbh it’s a super cool dilapidated vampire castle covered in snow. The lore surrounding it is really interesting as well, as are the enemy types. Also ice pop grandpa is pretty cool 👍
Irithyll of the Boreal Valley (DS3): It has this really uneasy feeling attached to it. The Sulyvahn’s Beast that attacks you on the bridge is ofc the first sign that something isn’t right but the emptiness of it is so unsettling. Until you bump into the knights and get murdered (rite of passage). The lore, once again, is impeccable, and the architecture is magnificent. Furthermore, the little ghosts of the Irithyll people are super eerie but also tragic :’)
Prison Town (Elden Ring): This was a difficult choice because I love the Haligtree aesthetics (hate it’s enemies) but I had to choose PT because I enjoy mostly everything about it. The Godskin Noble is a bit annoying as a boss but they’re easy dealt with with a bit of patience! The view of a literal town semi-submerged in lava is amazing. Rykard, you are a genius. A terrifying one, though.
16. Who is the most underrated NPC in your opinion?
I think everyone in BB gets a decent amount of attention bc there’s like 10 NPCs so I’m gonna have to say Irina from DS3. Her and Eygon’s dynamic is really interesting and I really want to know what she did to get sent there. Of course there’s the firekeeper thing but Eygon seems really perturbed about coming here and insults her specifically. Also she’s just super nice. I can never bring myself to learn the dark incants from her bc it upsets her </3 Also the braille makes her happy.
29. What are your 3 favourite non-boss enemies? (behave)
Life is so unfair when I have to behave 💔💔💔
Okay:
1) Corvian Knights (DS3)
2) Ringed City Knights (DS3)
3) Second Generation Albinaurics (Elden Ring) - my silly little guys
DS3 had the best enemy selection honestly
Do I enjoy fighting most of these? No, because they are evil and destroy me. Are they cool? Absolutely.
35. What ingame faction would you belong to?
Bloodborne: I’d love to be an Workshop Hunter. I feel like you have a great selection of weapons to choose from, the armour is stylish and you’ve got some of the strongest hunters to support you. Realistically though probably the Choir (I am too asthmatic).
Dark Souls: The DS world absolutely terrifies me so I’d hate to be in any of the covenants but if I had to choose I’d probably say the Watchdogs of Farron. I wanna make the dead dog happy :( (also they’re basically DS1 forest hunters. kinda sucks that we don’t get the flip ring though)

Hi! I read the chain writing about Lautrec and how he came to be, and was absolutely blown away! 10/10 would read again!
If its ok, can you do a prompt about Lautrec and Darkmoon Knightess? (Lmao I blame @thepruld for this but ngl I love it) Once I actually looked into their lore, they have quite the similarities!
Bronze armor, fatrolling, P A R R Y tf out of everything, serving onto one deity, both hail from Carim, P A R R Y dagger, undead knights, (did I mention P A R R Y)
Thx for reading this and bless!
[P.S: So I found out there's this whole HC about how men from Carim dictate their life in servitude to one woman/deity. (Kinda bonded like Irina and Eygon from DS3). So he actually kills and takes the firekeeper souls to Darkmoon to replenish her humanity (Like Kirk to Quelaag). This is mostly fueled again by theprulds vids about them which staryed this but heY lMmao whAt cAn I doboutit]
Hello anon. I think that you mistook this blog for a fanfiction blog, but this is a headcanon blog. The chain game was a group effort of around 20 different writers and artist. It is still on going and we have three chains going on at the moment, maybe even four? I am sure we have Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls and I think Dark Souls 3 also on going at the moment. Requests are not taken on this blog, what you can do is sending headcanons into my inbox. Of course you could ask me, the mun, on my writing blog, but I am not open for requests. But I am sure if you want more Lautrec/Darkmoon Knightess, there will be an artist or a writer who gladly takes commissions. P.S. ThePruld is great, but does not have anything to do with this blog ^^
