Banana Rose Warrior Of Light
Tumblr media
The ever-vaunted Warrior of Light. All 3 feet of her. She may be small but all those who have made the mistake of underestimating her have come to regret it. Her prowess on the battlefield rivals her intense passion for her friends and fellow scions, for whom she will always fight for.
Tumblr media
From humble beginnings as a fledgling conjurer in Gridania, she has always had a taste for adventure and a drive to help those in need. Whether that means delivering a few sandwiches, or providing some much needed healing magicks amidst war and carnage.
Tumblr media
In her free time between bouts of exploring new places and saving the world, you can find her serving up delicious breakfast foods at the Sunnyside Uppies cafe in Gridania's Lavender Beds.
Thank you for checking out my character information! I'm gonna drop some quick info below so you can continue to get to know her! Full Name: Banana Rose Nicknames: Rose, Nanners Pronouns: She/They Canon Classes/Jobs: White Mage, Dancer, Astrologian, Culinarian, Weaver Origin City: Gridania Likes: Cookies, making new friends, trying foods from all over Eorzea and beyond, biting ankles teasing the tall folk Dislikes: Summer in Gyr Abania, being treated like a child, eggs
This character is my main character, the one I made years ago to play the game with. I made her prior to any interest in roleplaying within ffxiv and as such she is, for the most part, a self-insert character. Her story follows the events of the game, with my own personal tweaks and headcanons here and there, and some posts about her may contain spoilers leading up to and including the latest major story patch. I will do my best to tag any major spoilers, and to avoid spoilers during in-game rp, but sometimes I can make mistakes!

I'm not sure why my brain keeps going back to MyStreet/Minecraft diaries every year, but it does, and here's the first product of it!
It's Garroth from an old AU of mine!
Tumblr media
Description and Explanation under cut!
OK! So this is from an old AU that I made originally back in 2018, then revisted and revised in 2020 during quarantine. The basic premise is that when Lucinda was teleporting herself, Kim(though in this i replaced her with Vlad for no reasonother than i liked Vlad more than Kim), and Garroth in that one episode of When Angel's Fall(when they all get found and they have to split up) she accidentally(somehow) teleports Garroth to the MCD universe!
There he wanders around, becoming a guard and trying to find a way back.
He's on his own for the first year, becoming a traveling guard and wandering from village to village going by the name Griffin(b/c he learned the hard way that this was an alternate universe and that Okasis is after his counter part). He ends up hearing about how a town named Phoenix Drop needs more guards temporarily until an issue with a shadow knight is resolved(when Laurence randomly appeared then disappeared). From there on, he's a 'main' character in the mcd season one story!
Tumblr media
He doesn't tell anyone he's a werewolf right away though, instead choosing to keep the hood of his guard outfit up(parallels to mcd!garroth that definitely doesn't go unrealized by Griffin). The reason for this is slightly shown in my other two sketches.
Tumblr media
In this sketch, Griffin is running from a village/mob(group of people) after they discover he's a werewolf. See, during his first year in mcd, he experienced a lot of discrimination for being a werewolf(b/c werewolf discrimination was way worse in mcd). The whole reason hes a "traveling" guard(besides the fact that hes looking for a way back home) is because he keeps getting run out of villages or someone gets close to learningthe truth and he gets scared and runs away before anything happens. He tries to hide the fact that he was a werewolf, but it was hard since there wasn't any real time between him becoming a werewolf and him being transported to the mcd universe for Aaron and Melissa to properly teach him to hide his ears and tail to blend in with humans(hence the hood).
Tumblr media
This sketch is when he gets his second scar(both are from his time traveling in the mcd universe). A fellow guard saw his ears and tail and immediately attacked, causing a big enough scene that the villagers around them noticed too, and started yelling.
As I'm sure you can guess, hes got a lot of his self confidence issues from mystreet s1 back(this includes his stutter). Despite everything though, he's still the same big hearted goofy he is in Mystreet. Just a bit more cautious.
Anyways! If you made it this far, good job! You deserve a cookie for reading my rambling about an au for an old minecraft rp!

Rules for the blog, about time!
1. I’m not particularly selective, if you wanna chat, hit me up! But, I expect you to be kind and patient with me, unnecessarily rude comments, vague posting about the blog, things like that, will most likely get you blocked.
2. I’m not the fastest to respond, since I have work. If I forget to reply to a thread, then feel free to let me know, but don’t spam reminders please.
3. Well the mun is over 18, that doesn’t allow explicit sexual content in rp’s or ask, strong language is allowed though. Keep things sfw, you’ll get warnings if this rule is broken, but repeat offenses will mean you get blocked.
4. That being said, absolutely no homophobia, racism, terfs, maps, or anyone else of the like is welcomed here. If such actions are found on your blog, or if you are to be actively engaging in such things, you’re blocked, no questions or hesitation.
5. I’m still on the fence about shipping, I’ll update this rule when I decide how I want to handle it. For now, it’s off the table, Nabbit is a flirt but he’s never serious about it.
6. Well Nabbit is canonically a rather tough cookie to take down, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible, godmodding isn’t something I’ll do, so I expect you to do the same, it’s no fun when someone does it. Threads will be temporarily dropped if godmodding is present, repeat offenders will be blocked.
Rules will be added and updated as needed so, make sure you check this often fellow blogs!

Hi there!
I'm Rose Knight Cookie, a cookie run oc designed to comfort others! Whether you be a fellow cookie, a scary dragon, a wicked witch, or anything else far and in between, I'm here to help! You can submit asks for advice at any time, rp blog or not, as long as others are happy, I am too! The clay that is friends with a rose is always a joy, however, I'm both the clay and the rose! Everyone has the chance to get better if they can believe and persist, but you don't have to do it alone. I had to do it all alone, but now that my rose blooms, it blooms for others and not just me!
I use any pronouns, and please try to be polite while here. I would appreciate it if you did not do anything immoral in the "DNI" type of immoral, so don't be inappropriate while you're here. With that in mind, this blog is open to everyone who needs support and those who don't. I hope we can all be friends!

SO THAT MONSTER GAME I JOINED. Spike (taken from the end of the TV series) got Nymph, and Vicious (taken from Ch 12 of Red Planet Requiem) got Shade. I apparently have drawn only One Colored Picture of Shade Vicious, in which he is grumping while Spike doesn't do his job and instead talks to fellow bartender Sparkling Cookie (you read that right. Panfandom rp is a trip)
anyway i'm Very Attached to Nymph Spike now, who is mainly cactus/succulent themed. His skin is v much that saguaro cactus texture even though he doesn't have spines everywhere, and he has jewel cactus and Space Weed growing out of his scars. Nymphs in this game are allowed to have vines like bulbasaur and Spike's are covered in, well, spikes, and grow out of a peyote flower on his back. His hair is now Weeping Love Grass, and he produces miniature sweet peppers and berries on his vines :' ) OH and he's got magic mushroom horns. Because i wanted to, and to harken back to that anime trope of mushrooms on the head meaning you're a depressed person fdhsiugh
i'm very attached to the idea of him learning to love plants in this place where he's forced away from space and getting to like, have a role in nurturing them, even if his own nurturing is gonna come from devouring humans....

Beyond Human - RPing Fey and other alien entities in a believable fashion
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. There is a LOT going on in this latest Question from a Denizen, which was submitted to me Anonymously. My secretive friend asks this. “Would be interested in hearing your opinion on portraying fey creatures. I've been trying to figure this out and have ended up stuck on 2 specific questions: How would one go about portraying different fey as an actual alien and otherworldly species? As a dm when portraying the individual fey I'm not sure what personality traits and behaviour characteristics to use. I don't want them completely loopy and crazy but also don't want then to feel like just an ordinary person either. Also in a game where there are a lot of fey how would you make each npc fey both unique but also still keep that otherworldly aspect. One problem, and this is true I think whenever you try to portray characters from a different race, is that all individuals in that race will potentially become cookie cutters. Each sharing the exact same traits and mannerisms. So how do you stop each npc from appearing to be no different while still keeping the mannerisms and behavior associated with them that gives them their otherworldly feeling?"
Whew! That is a lot to unpack, but I will do my best.
To tackle the second question first, I would treat your fey like any other NPCs you make that are not humans. No one should be a cookie cutter cardboard cut out, but, at the same time, there are certain traits that are common enough amongst the non-human races that you don’t want to jettison those entirely or else they might lose a little bit of what makes them seem like a member of that race.
A dour halfling might be interesting, but you want them to be the exception, since the norm for halflings is rather happy go lucky and cheerful. Likewise, if all of your dwarves are open and friendly, one might wonder why they’re often portrayed as a bit on the suspicious side. You can make sure that you include those traits that the NPC’s people are known for, but then vary and give extra traits as well. For example, let’s say we need 5 halflings for a caravan. Halfling one might be the dour doomsayer mentioned above, and you might also make them the one who works with the animals and to have a penny whistle that they play beautiful, mournful tunes on. Halfling two might be everyone’s favorite cook, a cheerful fellow with bright green eyes and quick fingers. Halfling three might be the one with the most common sense in the group, the even keeled brewer who keeps everyone rooted with pithy sayings and solid advice. A fourth one might be a bit of a prankster, but also the first one to buy you a drink or to laugh when they themselves get pranked, as well as a fiddler of great skill. Number five is a bit parental, something of a mother hen, and to know all the best herbal remedies you can find in the woods. Each one is distinct, but you’d believe them all as halflings, I’m willing to bet.
Your first question is a bit of a challenge, but I do have some advice on how to portray an entity like an archfey. There are ways of making them otherworldly while still making them a believable entity.
Firstly, remember that they are likely immortal for all intents and purposes. Sure, they could be killed, but they are unlikely to simply die. This tends to skew their ability to comprehend the concept of haste. They are much more likely to move, think, and act more cimcumspectly than the PCs might like. If they are trying to get an eladrin lord to send troops to aid them against the orcs attacking their lands, it might be challenging to get them to commit quickly. They may want time to think about it or send the PCs on a quest to prove themselves worthy allies. After all, when you can legitimately retreat and defeat your enemy by outliving him and his whole family, it’s hard to get someone to understand the need for speed.
Also, most fey, especially archfey, are completely amoral by the standards of mortals. Appealing to their better nature is unlikely to work, as they may not have one. They may see nothing wrong with solving the problem of a rampaging group of satyrs by shunting them to the Prime Material Plane, so the PCs who are likely trying to get a Fey Queen to recall them are going to face an uphill battle.
One thing that might be useful is to assign any of your fey some kind of aspect that you can use as a guideline. For example, in my LARP, I play a powerful fey called the Gourmand who embodies the aspect of Gluttony. Whenever I roleplay him, I make him incredibly predatory...his hands twitch like spiders, his head rocks side to side like a cobra, and he hunches forward. I speak in a deep, gutteral voice, and, before anything I say, there’s a certain amount of licking and smacking of lips. He’s cruel and has no compunctions about bargaining with PCs to do something awful...in exchange for which he helps them get things they REALLY want. He’s pretty repulsive, but that’s part of the idea. I think it’s pretty obvious when I’m playing him that he’s like no one else and very inhuman.
Another thing that comes directly from this is that each of these qualities can be exploited by your players, or by you. Let me show you what I mean.
The immortality aspect also means that, things that happened long ago are likely very fresh in the fey’s mind. If your eladrin battled the drow long ago, the PCs are likely to be able to use this if the orcs they’re fighting have drow allies. Alternatively, you could have the fey remember an ancestor of one of the PCs that they either liked or hated and give them some personal RP based on that.
If the PCs know the archfey is immoral, they can dispense with trying to appeal to the goodness in them. They can, instead, show them what benefits the archfey is likely to gain, which is more likely to appeal to them.
And if the archfey is the embodiment of something, the PCs may be able to goad the archfey into doing something that aligns with their nature. If, for example, the enemy included some kind of monster that was unique, they might appeal to the Gourmand’s hunger to eat something that no one else has ever eaten.
I hope this advice helps. Being convincingly alien is always an RP challenge, but it can definitely be worth the work. Let us know how it goes!

hello hello !!! so excited to be here with everyone :-) !!! i’m mira, i’m 20, i use she/her pronouns nd i live in the gmt+8 zone, so u can expect me awake when no one else is KJEHHSEJK i’ve been a fan of pjo since like,,,, i was 12 nd was literally convinced i was a demigod so u can imagine !!!! that when i saw this rp i was like !!!! [screams]
anyways !! this is arthur ‘artie’ hart nd they are New so i’m still working out a lot of their story, but im v excited to see where they’ll go :-) i have a few connections regarding his story nd also just ,, slapped som stuff down from the app into here HEKJHESJK
PART ONE.    THE BASICS.
name: arthur ‘artie’ hart. prefers to go by artie, as arthur is what his aunt calls him. age: twenty-two. zodiac: born on july 21st, 1999, making him a cancer sun, scorpio moon and leo rising. gender & pronouns: nonbinary demiboy. uses he/him and they/them pronouns. romantic orientation: bisexual.
PART TWO.     THE HIDDEN DEPTHS, THE SCRATCHED LAYER.
positive traits: compassionate / perceptive / mild-mannered. negative traits: pessimistic / evasive / easily jealous. mbti: ENFJ - the protagonist. moral alignment: chaotic good. what is their motivation?: artie is motivated, primarily, by the desire to never find themselves abandoned and alone. growing up with an absent goddess of a mother, a mother deep in her memories of a lover she’ll never see again and an aunt who tried to give them a foundation to grow from meant that their life was more or less marred by the concept of loneliness, of abandonment.
artie wants, more than anything else, for no future demigods to feel the same way they did — and if that means tearing down olympus and getting rid of the gods, then they were willing to turn the other cheek, to contribute bare bones to take on the least amount of blood and ichor. aphrodite had never made a move to acknowledge him other than the obligatory favor of claiming him as her child, and the knowledge that she too had abandoned him pushed him to the side of the titans.
the choice to do the bare minimum is rooted in the fact that they are still very much attached to camp half-blood and everyone within it, as they had been there for half their life. it is a decision rooted in wanting the best for the camp and its campers even if the decision is a difficult one. after all, what have the gods ever done for the hundreds of children they’ve brought into the world?
what was growing up like?: for starters, artie appreciates that his aunt tried. their mother was far too wrapped up in memories of a lover long gone, and aphrodite had never once made an effort beyond dropping them off at their mother’s doorstep and then claiming them as her child eleven years later. growing up was difficult. like any demigod child, there were instances that could never be explained, like the time artie was in his room one minute and the living room the next without ever having touched his closed door and the time his backpack was torn to shreds while he was still wearing it. still, they had to push through childhood, often seeking comfort in the arms of their aunt when the monsters got too close. at eleven, a satyr brought artie to camp half-blood after discovering their teleportation ability (it was a stupid incident, and one artie is reluctant to tell again, but it ends with falling asleep while their foot was in a toilet bowl while walking to class).
camp half-blood was a haven for artie as their heritage was unraveled. aphrodite claimed him a week after he arrived at camp, and he was immediately drawn to the change in lifestyle. it was a relief for all the pieces to fall into place, for artie to realize that they weren’t different. at thirteen, they became a year rounder camper after their aunt had encouraged them to stay, knowing their mother couldn’t keep them safe. their time at camp was divided into learning how to fight with a spear (a weapon that quickly became their go-to, the one weapon they were actually proficient with) and learning how to manage their ability. however, worry constantly nagged at them, as they realized they were only putting off a life alone. artie may not have been different, but there were very few people who lived like they did.
PART THREE.     THE EXTRAS, THE CONNECTIONS.
ambrosia tastes like the cranberry-walnut cookies their aunt used to make for them.
they have a little mp3 player because they absolutely cannot live without listening to music. it’s not connected to wifi or data, just a little device that hosts illegally downloaded music.
interchangeably uses he and they pronouns. gender identity was something artie struggled with growing up, as they never felt totally connected to their assigned gender at birth but didn’t feel totally disconnected from it either. it took a lot of google searches, long late night talks with the nymphs and his aunt and encouragement from their fellow siblings before they realized they were non-binary, and furthermore, a demi-boy. they do have a preference for people to refer to them with ‘he/him’ pronouns, while they tend to use ‘they/them’. of course, they don’t really mind what people use as long as it’s either he or them, and ultimately, artie is just happy he’s got this part of himself figured out.
handy with a spear. they tend to spin the weapon around their hand as part of their signature move, and yes, it is just to show off how good he is at spinning it.
pinterest here.
i.    this house burned down and we’ll take the memories with it.
this would be the person who artie is closest to and considers family. they would’ve been there for his every milestone, the person who had his back more often than not and vice versa. however, after artie is revealed to be part of luke’s army, betrayal strains their relationship. i can see this connection (in current times) focusing heavily on the fact that they’re both on directly opposing sides but want the other to be by their side, but being unable to switch sides themselves. this connection is also one heavily steeped in years and years of friendship, as artie has been at camp since he was eleven, and then switched to being a year-rounder at thirteen.
ii.    and where have the gods gone? taken by rainier gang.
artie didn’t want to switch to the titan’s side at first. he was convinced over a long period of time, and this connection focuses on the dynamic between artie and whoever took the time to convince him to switch sides. seeing as one of artie’s deepest fears is ending up alone and abandoned, maybe this dynamic focused on that aspect! honestly, i’m open to however this connection develops since it’s a pretty open-ended one.
iii.     for these are shared wounds. taken by emri kyung, salem poe.
in short, they have been artie’s sparring partner since he was a new camper. as a child of aphrodite, there was always that expectation that he’d be useless in a battlefield and this person took a chance on him, showing him everything he now knows about how to fight. they aren’t close by any means but there is comfort in intimately knowing what they’re like on a battlefield. how this dynamic develops depends on which side (or none, if they’re neutral!) the other person is on.

In regards to Villainy
I’ve been watching the villain post make its rounds and reblogged it earlier quietly with a small rant in the tags about personal concerns of my own. It’s shown up multiple times since then to where I feel some clarification is required on my part personally, as Eligos’s writer.
Communication and mutual agreement is required on all sides in RP, and nobody gets a free pass to do whatever they please because of some label that helps define their typical position in a roleplay. My gear gremlin was made for me as a player to enjoy watching him learn and grow as a person, and to provide minor inconveniences for other players should they wish him to get in their way as a way to help provide character growth for their muses. Not to be some big bad boss who gets their jollies by harming others. And I will not change him to suit anyone’s personal tastes but my own.
Read on if you want to see my whole take on this. Or not.
Let’s start with what the definition of villain actually means, given it’s a vaguer concept than most would like to think:
Definition of villain
1: a character in a story or play who opposes the hero 2: a deliberate scoundrel or criminal 3: one blamed for a particular evil or difficulty
These definitions are a rough guideline, but overall, all it takes to fall into the category of being a villain is a willingness to oppose a hero, regardless of reasoning or intent. Even in a clash of two heroes, you could call one the villain in that particular story for how they oppose the other. It’s a matter of perspective. One could be the villain of a story merely because they aim for the opposite goal of the hero of that tale, even if both end goals are suitably noble in the scheme of things. We often see in literary works that the villains of stories oft have either selfish or noble intentions, and in the case of the latter, what turns them into villains is how they view the world and how they may have let other important aspects fall to the wayside in their single-minded devotion to their goal.
Rarely is it that a good villain is written to be cruel and harsh for its own sake.  The villain’s view of the world may be twisted, but there’s always an element of logic and reason, the same as you might see in a heroic character. Even initially good motivations and desires can be twisted into something absolutely horrendous and monstrous with the right pulls of the string in a character’s history. Some can have their world views changed for the better with time, while others struggle in vain to understand to the bitter end. But that’s how the cookie crumbles. Not all endings are happy, and not every character deserves a happy ending in a story book, especially so when considering how many that they have made suffer through their actions. But by that consideration, heroes aren’t above similar karmic justice as well, simply because they wore the mantle of hero. Nor are they automatically entitled to their happy ending. Harming others, regardless of role one sees themselves in a story, inevitably begets wrath and a desire for similar harm upon the one who originally inflicted it. And while that may lead to interesting interactions, it doesn’t always unfold in a way where things work out where each party gets their just desserts as people believe they should. We watch what happens as a story unfolds, and the job of the mun in roleplay is to portray the character as their motivations, desires, and ethics would bid them do, be it for weal or woe.
But there are additional aspects to keep in mind when roleplaying, and it isn’t simply limited to keeping to the character. Communication ahead of time, and discussing what is acceptable, what isn’t, and what one expects to come of roleplay with another, must all be done in order to ensure things go in a manner both parties are ok with what may happen and are on the same page. There never should be any ‘well that’s what my character would do’ bullshit when it comes to discussing boundaries and hard limits on what one finds acceptable versus unacceptable in roleplay. If you feel your character would not be able to be played in a manner in which you prefer due to said boundaries or rules, it is best to find roleplay elsewhere. To push or pressure one into ignoring their own personal comforts and boundaries is unacceptable. Even when walking up to someone, there still is an expectation of some communication on an out of character level should you intend to harm their character. This isn’t reserved only for villains to do. That’s placing undue burden on one player type while relaxing standards for the rest. All players must heed this if communication is to be healthy, in order to avoid crossed wires.
Which brings us to concerns people run across in roleplay. There indeed are players who play a character type due to the power fantasy, and do not properly communicate with their fellow players, nor keep in mind what they may face for their actions. Please note how I did not specify sides. In my time in roleplay, I have seen many players of heroes pull the same exact thing that they are so quick to accuse villain players of: ignoring what consequences they would logically face for misdeeds and attacking others in the street, as well as attempting to kill without communication or agreement on an OOC level, on top of trying to maim and cripple characters in permanent ways over small slights, such as spilling a beer on them, or harsh words exchanged. All of this, with not a single word of communication or planning ahead of time. One person falling into one side or the other between ‘hero’ and ‘villain’ does not give them a free pass for such behavior. It’s reprehensible behavior no matter who does it, and using the OOC information that someone happens to play as a character on the other side of what one considers good or evil as reasoning for a free license to do so is even moreso. Actions have consequences, no matter what side you are on. It is better and more interesting roleplay to roll with the consequences of a muse’s actions than it is to straight up ignore them. Talk shit, get hit. Hit someone, be hit in return. No party should expect a blanket immunity due to what they consider themselves. But neither should players feel they are given an automatic pass or ability to control the fate of another’s character. That’s still up to the writer of the character themselves, regardless of how much you may dislike the character being portrayed.
In particular, I’ve seen a disturbing number of individuals who feel it is within rights to execute player characters with zero communication out of character, and it’s mostly the players who play the ‘good’ characters saying this. If you feel you have an innate right to execute a character played by another, without any sort of communication ahead of time, you may be better off writing by yourself than with others. No player is allowed to force character death on another, regardless of the roles played. You may discuss and plan, and plot ways any encounter may go, but the moment one tries to bully or force another player into killing their character off, regardless of why, they have gone too far and should not be surprised if the player in question chooses to remove themselves from the roleplay or ignore it entirely.
In regards to the claims of that the guards would not allow such characters in, that is ignoring just how vast a city is and the limited number of troops that would be there to patrol, in comparison to the rest of the populace. What we see ingame doesn’t necessarily correlate to the actual size of each location, as areas have been limited in size both due to technical limitations of the game as well as to ensure a relative amount of convenience for the players.
Certainly, should a character with a bounty and known face get noticed for their deeds or a guard is called for, they should be prepared to potentially face consequences for their actions or try to escape. Actions have consequences. But one cannot simply whip up a dozen super-powered city guard NPCS to try to execute another player simply because they dislike that the player is not playing the type they want them to. Especially if the character in question may not even have a wanted poster or have done anything that would warrant the guard’s attention. That is gatekeeping roleplay at its finest, deciding who should be where based on personal preferences with little regard to others beyond personal feelings. By that sort of standard, any player who disliked someone else could do the same and merely claim that the face is close enough to a bounty that they should be killed on sight. Better to alert a player of a guard character and let them handle it, if you do want to have guards interfere, or plot with said character’s player to see how guards can be involved and then step in if they are agreeable to such. If not, drop it and either watch, or ignore. Whipping up random NPCs to do your bidding and to try to force someone out of roleplay without any discussion will not encourage people to do as you expect, and instead is more likely to earn you a spot on the block list.
Often times, a player character that falls on the villain side of the spectrum may not necessarily have a bounty because they have handled their personal situations or misdeeds in a way that keeps them under the radar, or they are skirting the line between legal and illegal. Assuming that all deeds are known and skipping straight to confrontation is poor form at the least and is considered metagaming. No player gets a free pass to do that. Many villain players have rules that one must adhere to when engaging their characters precisely because as players we’ve all seen people assume what our character would and wouldn’t be let known, or what they would say, and then run with it without even a word to us as the player of said villain. The rules we have are used to avoid such mischaracterization and help ensure that communication is healthy on all sides. Players of both sides get particularly upset when key details are left out and things they do not want nor did they agree ahead of time to are sprung on them.
Finally, a character does not represent the writer. A character may adore strawberries and peanuts, but the writer may be highly allergic to where they are sent into shock even on mild contact with either of them and thus loathes them. And what a character may think of said foods may also differ drastically between what the writer thinks of them as a result of those differences. This is the difference between in character and out of character. I explain it as such as I have seen the community grow progressively worse over time in understanding that what one’s character may do may not necessarily reflect the writer’s view in real life at all. Too many see a character that is morally questionable and believe that the writer behind them will behave in the exact same way as the character, and that how the character may see things is no different than how the player does. If you struggle to comprehend that a character does not necessarily represent the player, then you misunderstand what roleplaying is. It is not merely and only inserting yourself into a game setting down to the last detail. You may do that, but others have just as much right to write out something different, and approach a character not from a perspective of how they themselves feel, but from a point of analyzing of how someone who experienced the history forged for the character might behave and in doing so explore the resulting mindset.
Such history may scar a character or traumatize in a way that brings out behaviors that the player themselves would never consider till they sit down and consider just how the character may respond after all factors are taken into account. Just because one character hates something or someone does not mean that the writer does as well. Darker characters and villains often have traumas that skew their views to some degree, but just because the writer has taken the time to consider what that may result in does not mean they require therapy themselves as a person or that they share those same views or ideals. To say so and paint all players with such a broad brush and claim them to be mentally unwell is disgusting and indicates that, as a player, one cannot separate themselves from their character enough to comprehend that others are able to portray views other than their own personal set of beliefs held as a person. It also discourages dialogue, as it shows an innate, hostile bias, and there are not many that are willing to put up with such hostility and narrow-mindedness as it is being aimed at them as a person and attacking them as a person rather than disliking the character forged. You cannot expect someone to willingly listen and try to see your side when attacked on a personal level for little more than having made something you dislike seeing in your personal roleplay. If you dislike it, don’t interact or involve such a character in your plot line. If they ask for your view, you can always provide constructive criticism, but if you offer it unbidden you should not expect it to be listened to or taken. Especially if it is very clear from how you approach it that your problem is personally with the player and not the details or how they portrayed the character.
As a personal example, Eligos would be categorized as a villain. He works for whoever pays him the most as a minion, and while he mostly does perfectly legal work, he absolutely has done less-than-legal work and then carefully covered up his misdeeds after by pulling the strings of the people who owe him favors. He is considered a villain mainly as he will do whatever he is allowed to within his contract in order to succeed, and often times finds himself working for the wrong [losing] side because his messed-up priorities led him to see the extra money offered as indication of good faith in his abilities and also valuing him as an asset, and not being able to see why acting on behalf of someone he thinks valued him more is a bad thing. He will work with anyone if he’s given a good enough reason or money, or against them if someone else makes a better offer. He won’t kick puppies or harm kittens, or hurt anyone unnecessarily, and if it does boil down to combat, it’s something I absolutely discuss ahead of time to find out limitations and also what one desires to see happen, so that personal growth for the character he is facing off against or with has that opportunity to grow and learn as a person. If someone says they dislike something? That’s now off the table and no longer up for discussion, period. But by virtue of his poor life choices and habitually finding himself on the wrong side of conflict due to his values, he is a villain, through and through.
But playing a character like him isn’t a simple power fantasy made to flex virtual muscles. There’s easier and simpler options, and if I wanted to do that, I’d have just made a hero, as those characters tend to not be analyzed so hard for compliance as villains are. If Eligos had been made to be some stupid power fantasy and nothing more, he’d not be yeeted into a wall half as often as he has by both those around him and his own tools malfunctioning. Nor am I mentally unwell and think the same way he does, simply because I let him say and do the shit that he does. I personally dislike many of his life choices, but do find it amusing to watch him go, and then pile on karma later for all of his misdeeds so he regrets his actions later. He’s an arrogant little gear gremlin who exists to help further stories of others while providing entertaining moments. Just because one individual personally may not see the karma carried out or get to execute him simply as they dislike him doesn’t mean he gets away with no consequences for his actions. As the player, I decide how to punish him. Not others. Him being a villain does not strip me of that right and give it to you simply because you dislike seeing him around.
