My Journey with Garo
Tumblr media
Extract of Garo issue cover art from the Garo Mandala (1991)
It must've been near the end of 2022 when I discovered the treasure trove that is the Monthly Manga Garo, a legendary alternative manga magazine that ran from 1964 to 2002 that thrived against the backdrop of a politically turbulent post-war Japan. In the English market now, we're fortunate enough to be getting a wide variety of translated works from some of the manga greats who had serialised in Garo. From pillars like Tsuge Yoshiharu and Shirato Sanpei to the heta-uma king Ebisu Yoshikazu, you won't ever be bored with the sheer variety of stories, art styles and subject matter that can be seen throughout Garo's lifetime. Pick up any issue and you'll be surprised as to how many types of stories will grace your eyes.
Now back to my personal experience with Garo. I had seen a Garo issue for the very first time through one of Shawn's videos from Japan Book Hunter, a manga plug that I've used for amazing and rare manga that you won't be able to find anywhere except in Japan's jungle of bookstores. His YouTube channel at the time was uploading extremely interesting manga hauls that touched upon a wide variety of lesser-known genres and niches in Japanese comics. There were alternative manga, Shoujo horror, SF, gag and all the other gritty stuff from the wider world of manga outside the usual Shounen Jump. I watched his channel religiously and still look back on some videos to this day, reflecting on how far I've come in learning about manga and manga history. Huge shoutout to Shawn and his store, check him out!
After moving away from the more well-known Seinen and Shounen titles in search of more to explore, my foray into alternative and underground manga was one of the most enlightening experiences in my reading journey. I'd equate my discovery of Garo to my first reads of Borge's short stories, both mind-blowing experiences that have completely transformed my tastes in fiction forever. Garo and my subsequent dives into other alternative manga have now created an insatiable curiosity into what else could be hidden out there in the largely untranslated world of manga. It seems like going backwards in time is the direction I'm taking, but I haven't even scraped the tip of the iceberg yet with Garo, let alone other niches like Shoujo horror and Kashihon. Slowly I'm completing issue after issue, gradually exposing myself to a legendary group of mangaka and artists that have cemented themselves in a magazine that I feel stands the test of time.
At this moment, I have about 40-ish Garo issues on my shelves, and I've read maybe 15 of those. It's a slow reading process, but it's insanely worth it. Each decade is vastly different from the others, so it's extremely fascinating to see the evolution of the magazine over time. For example, starting off in the 60s you have the legendary Kamui-den by Shirato Sanpei, a ninja tale set in feudal Japan that involves social/political commentary on topics like class conflict and oppression. The series was responsible for the birth of Garo because founder Katsuichi Nagai, who I believe was already experienced in the kashihon market, had wanted to give a platform for Shirato to serialize his work. Many stories in the 60s era of Garo were more politically expressive, coinciding with a lot of the unstable politics at the time in Japan. Other mangaka largely present throughout 60s Garo include Mizuki Shigeru, Tsuge Yoshiharu, Nagashima Shinji, Takita Yuu, Tsurita Kuniko and many more.
Tumblr media
Various Garo issues from my bookshelf
Then, you move into the 70s. This is where mangaka and artists like Hayashi Seiichi, Tsuge Tadao, Susumu Katsuma and Abe Shinichi start to become more present in the spotlight and appear more frequently in issues. A more surreal and weirder style of stories begin to appear in this decade, marking a key period for Gekiga in my opinion. Personally, when I think Gekiga, my mind goes to people like Hayashi, Tatsumi, Tsuge and Abe, so it's a time that I feel was a very important one for Garo.
Tumblr media
Flowering Harbour - Hayashi Seiichi (Garo 1969 May)
The majority of my Garo reads have been towards the tail end of the 60s, with some reads spread throughout the 70s and 90s. Funnily enough, I don't think I have many issues from the 80s. From what I've read from the later decades of Garo though, I've fallen deeply in love. Going from the Tsuges, Hayashis and Mizukis to a whole new world of more contemporary mangaka like Usamaru Furuya, Kawai Katsuo and Maruo Suehiro opened up an even bigger obsession for the magazine. You have an influx of ero-guro (erotic-grotesque) and heta-uma (bad-good) in the scene that introduced a great deal of new names, a lot of whom had also continued into Ax magazine, the spiritual successor to Garo, after the magazine's end. I can make a whole other post on Ax, but that's for another day.
Tumblr media
My Youth - Maruo Suehiro (Garo 1983 August)
That about sums up my journey reading Garo from discovery to this current point in time. With 426 issues spanning from the 60s to the early 2000s, I'm not going to run out of issues to read anytime soon. Maybe in a future post, I'll talk more in-depth about specific mangaka and artists that I enjoy. But anyways, thanks for reading my first blog post if you've come this far! Hoping to get out more posts in the future because it really scratches an itch for me when I can express all my thoughts like this in an extended post format.

You know, the fact that the Admins were worried about someone worse getting Command privileges next time implies there could be a next time. Which gives me an idea:
Bob of all people ends up with them somehow and freaks out, both because it hasn't been all that long since they escaped The Goomba and because he knows full well that he's the last person who should have this much power. So he tries to get rid of it. And since he's panicing and has no idea what he's doing, he accidentally uses Factory Reset on himself.
Thing is, because whatever system that handles the Commands only sees a Guardian Command being used by someone with the proper privileges, when it "resets" him it applies SMG programing instead of Garo programing. And then it realizes that something's wrong, because this Guardian has:
No Avatar
No partner
No way of channeling Meme Energy
No Guardian abilities of any kind aside from Command Privileges and Fourth Wall Awareness
Not even a number(it starts using SMGi as a placeholder)
It's at this point that it should have realized there's been a mistake, except nobody's gotten around to updating the System with information on this new False Positive virus, so it just sees the most broken SMG it's ever encountered (including Niles himself) and decides it's going to Solve The Problems. And since it doesn't have the knowledge or resources or even permissions to do even half of that, it's just going to have to get them. It probably should have notified an Admin at some point in this whole process, but whoever's in charge of routine maintenance has been slacking off and it's gone a little screwey.
Meanwhile everyone's freaking out because Bob's acting weird and there's power drains across Adminspace and nobody has any idea what the hell is going on!

Quietly walking out of their room they hide in the corners as they heard someone walk by them. What they saw is none other than a j'avo wearing now upgraded neo umbrella attire to be more fitting more their religion. These J'avo are highly skilled in protecting the halls with Hsien-Ko inside unaware the bloodshed is about to come down when he comes closer to where the two are hiding.
Tumblr media
Once he got closer Hsien-Ko grabs him by the back using her blade stabbing him only a few times.
' PRRRAACCCKK!! '
' PRRAACCKK! '
' PPPRRRCCCSSHH! ' .
Once she's done both she and Raptor got out if their hiding spots deciding that them stealthily walk their way out of here is not an option. So they decided what fits them both best, kill everyone in the entire halls with no mercy until they can find her allies.
" Raptor, fuck this we're killing our way by force. "
Tumblr media
Hsien-Ko grits her teeth as she channels both the power of Kouga and the T-Erebus virus from within as her body erupted into emerald flames burning away her entire clothing leaving her bare naked.
' CCCCCCSSSSHHHHH!!! '
Coating in emerald flames then came out golden crystalline structures this time they emerged through all over her body finally forming herself into the armor of the fanged wolf of legend.
' KRRRSSCCCHH ! '
' KKKRRCCHT ! '
' KKKRRRCCHHHT ! '
' KKKCCCHHHTTT ! '
From head to toe Hsien-ko have achieved what was taboo in the old tales of the makai order and Kouga let this happen giving her this power destroying an oath all in the sake of protecting her and her family and that is becoming the first female makai knight but not just any makai knight a makai knight of legends, she has become Garo.
Tumblr media
Standing there in shock her cigar fell off her lip as she just standing there witnessing her transformation first hand.
" What the fuck...? "
Tumblr media
Hsien-Ko stands ready now with her blade in her hands she kept walking through the halls while Raptor follows her even more excited now as the J'avo heard all the noise they run up through the halls only to met with both the now former jiangshi and the zombie together. The armored J'avo began their assault while one of them ran away to alert the rest of the cult of Las Erebus as the two retaliated by butchering and maiming their attackers with sheer violent tendencies cluttered in their minds.
Tumblr media
They begin firing at them both fiddling them with bullets while she stands guard in front of raptor protecting her as the bullets do not damage thanks to the armor coaeted her body as she dashes forward slashing the J'avo in pieces with only one slash leading the way for more destruction she is going to caused. Hsien-Ko's anger has cranked up from one to a billion for she won't stop with the killing until her family is safe.
' KLLLLSSSSHHHH! '
Hsien-Ko growled as she kept moving with Raptor by her side like an enraged hungry wolf that she is more of the J'avo showed up this time with T-103s and packed with more firepower hoping to stop their bloody rampage.
Tumblr media
The T-103 dashed towards Hsien-Ko head first slammimg his fist directly into her face but Hsien-Ko being a tyrant killer and apex predator amongst the bio organic weapons lifting his entire body and slamming him into the ground with such immense strength and rage still building up inside her. While with lord Raptor the zombie is going all in while she keeps her busy as she swung her foot as it turns into a gritty chainsaw made from her flesh and bones eviscerating a handful of these bio organic weapons spilling as much blood as possible while Hsien-Ko raised her foot onto the tyrant on the ground and then stomps his head in.
' PRRRAAACCCKKKK!! '
Splattering his brains all over the floor she turned around dealing with the rest of the J'avo along side Lord Raptor plunging her blade at one of them getting near her friend despite being able to regenerate Hsien-Ko is not one to let her friends get hurt even if they're practically already dead.

Holding the weapons and jewelry of his mentor and father, Okahni trudged up the crumbling stone steps to the ruined fortress.
High sandstone walls surrounded him, their ceilings long since collapsed, small flecks of faded paint belying the glorious patterns that once adorned this palace. The night sky yawned above him, untouched by light from below, the stars coldly glittering in a distant array.
It comforted him only some to know these were the same stars his ancestors had looked upon.
Okahni took the Garo’s entrance into the throne room- One of the high windows cut into the thick sandstone.
He leapt to the moth-eaten carpet leading from the door up to the throne. The walls were carved with ornate but crumbling pilasters, channels carved into the floor that once flowed with water. The further half of the room was elevated, and then the throne sat on another stone platform.
A battered skeleton occupied the golden throne, still dressed in ages-old finery, a crown glittering on it’s head. Behind it stood a high archway leading into yawning darkness.
Okahni bowed his head before the skeleton on the throne, and laid out Ashtir’s arms.
“My Liege, I humbly return these to your safekeeping.”
The skeleton’s hands twitched with life, gripping the armrests of it’s throne. It’s limp jaw raised up to meet the skull properly and red light gleamed in the depths of the empty sockets as the king raised his head to look at his visitor.
“Ahh, you...Good to see you still alive, warrior.”
Okahni dipped his head low in silent acknowledgement. Bones creaking and heavy jewelry clinking together, the skeleton got to it’s feet.
The king had grown monstrous in death, towering above Okahni, his form hardly that of a troll anymore. His skull appeared nearly more like a muzzle, massive tusks sprouting from his lower jaw, his horns ivory-white and curling forward from his temples. A ragged mane sprouted straight from the bone, continuing from the back of his skull down his spine. A long, thick tail dragged behind him.
Steps heavy and awkward with disuse and unfamiliarity with his form, the king trudged forward. A massive hand took up Ashtir’s swords and other precious belongings.
“And these...Belonged to your mentor?”
“Yes, my Liege.”
The king looked at the scorched weapons, staring for a long, silent moment.
“I see that his death was honorable.” He remarked finally, and turned away. He shuffled, step by step, to the room beyond the throne, and then returned without the weapons. He seated himself in his throne, sighing.
“You still dutifully serve me, after all these sweeps. Even as the last Garo...Bearing the weight of eventual collapse...”
The king closed his eyes, or so it seemed, the lights vanishing as he sighed once more.
“Persevere, warrior. That is my order. Allow my kingdom to flourish once more...Let us not bear the burden of being the last.”
The king tossed something forward. Two golden cuff bracelets, which landed in front of Okahni.
“...And let these serve as a reminder of my order.”
Okahni bowed his head low, nearly touching the floor.
“...Yes, my Liege.”
He took up the bracelets and tucked them away, as he watched his king lower his head to his chest once more, seeming exhausted.
“...Now...Go...Garo...Warrior....”
The light in the king’s eyesockets faded. Okahni silently took his leave through the window, and upon exiting the throne room, straightened and walked a few steps.
He stopped to take a deep breath, closing his eyes. His heart still ached with the loss of his mentor.
‘Let us not bear the burden of being the last.’
His path seemed clear. He would follow the same road as his mentor and guide his own pupil, and not only that, but rally the remaining Garo villagers in rebuilding their home.
He could not fail his king in this. He was the only one who could bear this burden.
No matter what it cost.

Yet another unhinged gaming theory: Majora’s Mask edition
*plops down* Alright, I got another one that’s been stewing in my brain. Really been trying to make some sense of the lore of MM and I think I have a fairly interesting idea. It might come as no surprise but I don’t buy all of Nintendo’s lore explanations for their games, as it feels like they either forget the original ideas or discard/alter them entirely. So here’s my take on the setting of Majora’s Mask, Termina; what it is, how it came to be, etc. I’ll be explaining my theory in a chronological way from the start of the land’s history to the time of the game.
To begin: The ancient tribe that created the mask for hexing rituals was Hyrulean, not Terminian, and existed a long time ago; as in, a time when some of Demise’s more powerful demons, perhaps with measures of divine power, might still have been around. My hypothesis concerning them is that one of those demons was one named Majora. This demon was able to exert a strong psychic influence on mortals, even across great distances, and was well recognized by monsters/demons in general. (See the mask’s effects in Breath of the Wild that allows the wearer to be left alone by many monsters due to their recognition of the entity.)
Majora wanted worshipers and attention, fancying itself as a god, or at least desiring to be one. It got those worshipers as a cult, a group of cultists who grew into the aforementioned ancient tribe. In order to properly and safely interact with this tribe of followers, it allowed itself to be made into a mask, and the wearer would channel its presence, words and will through a form of willing possession. The cult developed traditions that involved the use of masks generally, which would follow them as they migrated across time and space to the dimensionally parallel realm called Termina.
Now, concerning the origin of Termina: I do think there is a chance it always existed, even before Majora or Skull Kid came into the picture, but Nintendo is insistent that at least the mask was heavily linked to the origin of the realm. However, just looking around Termina gives the impression that it has been around for a very long time, having an implied intricate history which wouldn’t just all pop into existence the moment Skull Kid put the mask on. So I propose a compromise between both sets of ideas: Majora did indeed cause the creation of Termina, along with its first peoples, but it was a very long time ago, before the Skull Kid put the mask on.
I propose that in more ancient times, the mask, housing a demon with some measure of divine power, created Termina as a smaller reflection of Hyrule. It wasn’t a totally independent dimension, as it depended on the existence of Hyrule and its peoples in order to exist; hence, so much of the population of Termina reflects the peoples of Hyrule in a sort of faux-real-time dynamic. Once this world was made, Majora led its followers across one of the dimensional nexuses, and ended up in the lands neighboring the canyon which would grow into the kingdom of Ikana. They settled this region, and built the Stone Tower as their personal stronghold and cultic center dedicated to Majora. (You might also note the anti-triforce/goddess imagery that the tower is so infamous for, strengthening my idea that Majora was a demon and its followers were anti-goddess.) The ancient tribe would later be known as the Garo, and as history shows, they came into conflict with the growing Ikana peoples quite often.
Worship of Majora went on for a long time, spreading quietly over much of Termina as a small number of cult members spread throughout the peoples of the world. Eventually the mask’s malign nature came more to light as more terrible things would happen to the ancient tribe, as well as their Ikanan neighbors. Almost all of the Garo became so overcome with fear of the mask and its power that they sealed it away, locking away the Stone Tower as well to keep the mask’s cursed power from spreading. From here, all of those who had survived the wars between the Garo and Ikana, as well as the horrors wrought by the mask, left the regions behind entirely, spreading throughout the Terminian populations. They brought with them their mask-related traditions, but sought a better faith, which was forged when eventually an agreement was reached between the peoples of Termina and the four giants. These giants became the land’s deified protectors, and together created another divine mask to be donned when the land might need protecting during their eventual slumbers. This would be known as the mask of the Fierce Deity, a spirit dwelling inside the mask, which required the happy and hopeful memories of the peoples of Termina, as well as their righteous fury against evil and calls for protection against calamity to operate as a transformation mask. From the point of this covenant between the peoples and the giants, a new set of traditions and religious practices emerged as seen practiced in the game. In addition to the covenant with the four giants and fierce deity, the people also formed a faith in what they called the Goddess of Time, and thus themes of the passage of time were integrated into the faith traditions of Termina. This was a prophetic thing, prophesying the coming of Link and the powerful Ocarina of Time from Hyrule that would come as the salvation to the peoples.
Meanwhile, having been locked away, left behind and bereft of worshipers, Majora’s fury and rage burned furiously, but helplessly from its prison. There was no recourse available to it other than to constantly call out for someone to come and retrieve it, to let it out, and don it so that it might unleash its calamitous powers in vengeance against a world that it had created yet had now rejected it in favor of the four giants, the goddess of time, and the fierce deity. Eventually, the call did reach someone: The Happy Mask salesman, a Terminian of some power who, upon discovering a dimensional nexus between Hyrule and Termina, brought the mask traditions to Hyrule in the form of the Happy Mask shop, where he would gather and sell masks he found to people in both realms. Eventually, he heeded the call to find and claim Majora’s Mask, and by finding a way up into the Stone Tower (as I doubt he could open the doors described in the game himself), he brought the mask out of its prison. Though he was strong enough to resist putting the mask on himself, Majora sealed its victory when the Skull Kid, in his usual mischief ‘acquired’ the mask from the Salesman. Unable to resist the mask’s compulsions, it put the mask on, and from there became the puppet of the demon who now possessed him. Still set on revenge, Majora caused many troubles to Termina by the hands of the Skull Kid, seeking to destroy the world it had created. This leads us to the game itself where Link saves Termina, preserving it as a mirrored dimension of Hyrule.

Today's Focus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
05.31.24 - Happy Friday and happy two years of me working for the OAG! That's something, right? (It is, because the longer I stay the more money I get in bonuses every year.) It's another three-day weekend for me; I'm taking off Monday the third to celebrate my anniversary with hunny. Plus, my city's Pride Parade is this weekend! Whew!
Work - I have no idea lol. So work has been a little hectic with a couple of things and I think I'm going to be fielding emails all day. But who knows what those emails will be about.
Background Noise - Well I'm remote again so I'm going to be doing the DVR as primary background noise; in terms of watching YT in my other time today I'm literally just doing the Watch Later in order - no particular theme or focus.
I did 22 videos yesterday and I'm really happy with that number and hoping to keep it up over the weekend.
Study - It is Wikipedia day and oh boy do I have a lot to read.
Now, I didn't get a chance to do books yesterday; this whole week has been pretty busy at work and I've been too tired when I get home to pick anything up really. I did, however, get a chance to read like four 'random' articles, but most of them were me familiarizing myself with the UK's contaminated blood scandal; there were headlines regarding it recently and then one of my YT channels did a video on it so I started learning about that.
Extras - Friday means I clean out the catbox and prep it for the weekend; I'd like to do a lot of work on the house over the long weekend so we'll see what I accomplish. Dinner tonight is mussels in garlic butter sauce with angel hair pasta and a salad; I honestly don't know what I'm doing over the weekend/for the week, because my anniversary is in here. In terms of activities, there's a couple of places we want to go eat, and a couple of local stores to visit plus maybe the Pride Parade. There's the three episodes & one special of Kamen Rider Build for tonight, plus two movies for the end of Garo: Makai Senki for the weekend; next week we go back to Kyuranger. Mini-essay was short and easily done today; I'll try to write more over the weekend but might just game instead.

Mutsugi attacks her, Souma protects her, and they start trying to fight together, but only Ryuga is even close to a match, and she uses a spell on him. In his disoriented state, he points out she knows Inga is impossible to eliminate, but she argues that the Makai have operated on this premise for millennia, and the world has not changed, Horrors continue to appear, and she believes eliminating Inga, even at the cost if human lives, is the only way, but Ryuga knows Inga has also lead to human advancement. She accuses him of singing with Inga, but his duty is to human life, and the eventual world where humanity is no longer swayed by it, but for that he must cut her down. He is unable to actually touch her, until Souma saves him, swearing to fight even if his body is destroyed, and summons his HAGANE. Mutsugi acknowledges him, but declares there is no need for Makai Knights now, overpowering him and blasting both, Koyori blocks, but has no hope of winning, until Souma supports her, and they manage to send it back. Mutsugi is enraged, and grabs her collected Inga, as Ryuga, Souma and Koyori stand to oppose her, Koyori prepares a spell, handing her Madou Brush to Ryuga. Seeing her resolve, Ryuga summons GARO, and casts it as a spear into Mutsugi, defeating her, and breaking her spell over the people. Ryuga and the others declares that they are protectors, not rulers over humanity. Mutsugi is then stunned to hear the voice of the Seductress once more, disappointed in Mutsugi's achievement after all the work she did in guiding her to the Forbidden Fruit. As Mutsugi breaks, the Seductress possesses her body to acquire the power of the Forbidden Fruit, and declares her victory, opening the Gate of Destruction fully, as GARO and HAGANE stand opposed to her.
New Generation Stars: Yuka runs off to make a suddenly requested presentation to thes higher ups, and the robot, as it decides to clean up a little, suddenly freezes up, and again data of Blazar and SKaRD battling plays without apparent influence. After the end, the last blank key is converted to an Ultraman Blazar Hyper Key. Yuka returns, and as the robot reactivates they both noticed the new Hyper Keys.
Gotchard: Renge is visiting her grandmother, and is attacked by something. Minato and the kids have been reinstated at the Alchemist Academy, Minato has some doubts about teaching again, but the kids encourage him. They have 78/101 Chemies, and a message from the Assembly basically reflects blame for not noticing the hero Greyon was the mastermind behind everything. Renge calls about the Yokai attack, interrupted by exorcist Starshine Hoshino and his pupil, Pandora Kajiki, and Ichinose and Renge go to meet her, where they are a hitodama and follow it, are attacked by the Yokai, the girls force Ichinose to become Gotchard, but even as TriCatcher he can't stop it, but Hoshino and Kajiki arrive, Hoshino actually forcing it back. As everyone marvels, FireMars on it's own leaves Ichinose and enters Hoshino's Mandala, leading him to declare he's gathered all 5 elements, and leave. Two punks messaged with the local shrine, and are approached by the Yokai, in fact two Chemies, and harass them, leading a nearby Atropos to declare humans pathetic. Renge's grandmother recommends Hoshino to the village for his work, while Ichinose has gotten confirmation from Sabimaru on the Chemies' identified as CareRy and BeroSol, and from this Ichinose has deduced the Mandala contains all Cosmis Chemy, Hoshino relating the story of how the lights granted him their power. The Yokai Malgam attack, easily thwarting Hoshino. Platinum Gotchard fights, borrowing power from X-Rex, AppareBushido, and matching a joint technique with Wrestler G and OdoRippa, and recovers the two Chemies, but they seem to want to communicate something. It emerges the two hoodlums are land shark trying to pressure the people into abandoning the village. The frustrated mayor leaves, and is attached by something unseen.
Bunboomger: the "Tire People" have started making the news, Taiya and Chassiro know what to expect, but Bunboom is just excited. Mira is forced to become BunPink to save a kid in the road, only to, still transformed, be arrested by Jou. Chassiro is informed by a contact of Mira's arrest, taken in by the International Space Agency, and is interrogated by Jou's new superior, who already knows who she is, and questions her on the danger the Bunboomgers and Budario pose, even as Mira points out the Hashilien's are the threat. Taiya interrupts the interrogation via communicator, introducing himself and making clear he already knows who Saibu Shirabe is. Annoyed by the attention all going to the Bunboomgers, the Hashiliens decide to draw attention to themselves, and create a Sauna Kurumajin. Taiya has brought Jou and Saibu to the base, on behalf of the ISA she demands Chassiro and Mira be removed and the operations be turned over to them, with Taiya's cooperation, and they select the Bunboomgers. Naturally Taiya refuses, willing to cooperate but not to let ISA control them. The Hashilien attack makes the news, and Saibu has Jou stop the team leaving, declaring if they do they'll become criminals to the ISA, but as the victims call for the Bunboomgers to rescue them, and Genba specifically requests them, the trio go anyway, Jou's duty to the people leading him to go along with them, leaving Saibu behind, it's only then she sees Bunboom, who offers her curry. The Bunboomgers arrive, their presence inspiring the people enough to reverse Gyasoline production, and Jou helps them flee, marvelling at the heroics, while Saibu, having cleared her plate, discusses with her superiors as Bundario offers more. With the Kurumajin defeated, Yarucar once again goes on a rampage. Bundario gives Saibu her last helping before launching the Bunboom Cars and joining in defeating the foe. Later Saibu accepts Taiya's offer, and he chooses Jou as their intermediary with the ISA, and they have more curry to celebrate.

1, 5, 12!
So this is such a specific thing, but i used to live in a town called Flushing in Michigan, farming town in the middle of the woods and you could go hours any way before hitting highway or people aside our small little town areas scattered between farm properties. All this said, we were a small little place. In this small little place, we had a public broadcasting channel hosted for my area (I don't know if it was the county or how that worked it was like 16-17 years ago) and it had a huge chunk of the lineup 2-3 days a week that was just japanese tokusatsu with english dubbed over mixed with some having amateur subtitles. It was done by 2 guys who were in the early con scene who lived a town over and would either get imports OR buy off VHS imports with fan translated stuff (which was how a lot of this stuff got over here back in the day). So through this really specific thing in a small window of time, alongside watching power rangers since i was 3 i was also watching all the toho classics up to final wars, i was watching ultraman, i was catching some snippets of showa sentai and some other offshoot tokusatsu from the era too. it was a wild time to be a little farmer boy with a bunny ear tv upstairs.
5. Such a broad question, i'll give my favorites for each franchise i've seen outside kaiju stuff since that's it's own beast.
Super Sentai: Juuru (Kiramager), Yamato (Zyuohger), or Shishi (Gaoranger)
Kamen Rider: Eiji Hino (OOO) or Shouichi Tsugami (Agito)
GARO: Kouga
Power Rangers: Im gonna be real, most the reds in power rangers are the most generic fuckings guys to ever guy so i dont have one? Nick from mystic force was a strong personality though he was fun.
Ultraman: Gai (Orb) or Mirai (Mebius)
12. Weirdest huh....hmmm, a lot of weird or gross monster stuff im pretty used to in non toku media since i love monsters and guro and a lot of non toku kids shows (love me some toy propaganda haha). So i guess the stuff that weirded me out the most personally was just the knda everything going on in Kiva's past timeline. There's a limit to Inoue-isms for me, and he walked over them right out the gate. Not in the way that pisses me off though i was just constantly like "huh???? Okay?? This is happening now i guess??" The obsession with psychic children tokusatsu had from the 70's all the way up into the early heisei era is also a fun one. From Mothra to 1971 kamen rider to kuuga-agito stuff, they were putting those little dudes in everything. Wild stuff.
I for one do not find the comical amount of formal crucifixion in sentai strange, i welcome it frankly. Go full on with it, i kinda wanna see how far we can push it.

This is a continuation of the campaign journal of Adventures in Lyria. The first entry is here and you can see all entries here.
Act 9: Port Cissylvania
The heroes head to a sleepy fishing town, and bring an inglorious end to General Magnus Strabo.
It was at this point I moved the game from Roll20 to Foundry. You can read more about my thoughts on this here.
Before Port Cissylvania
Garo and Zeke were all that was left in the adventuring party after the events on Silvercap Mountain. They took a well-deserved rest, leaving clean-up duties to General Salvius (first seen in Act 2).
When they woke, the General informed them that the Umbralenses (developed in Act 7) did indeed cure lycanthropy. The enemy forces were being cured.
But there was fresh trouble: a ship had come ashore on the nearby coast. The heroes were sent to investigate.
Tumblr media
Meeting Alexandros and Surkiv
The players of Cyrus and Flutter had new characters. Taking Cyrus' place was Alexandros the half-elven drakewarden ranger. Flutter's spot was now filled by Surkiv the dragonborn path-of-the-beast barbarian. These two had been captured while defending the homelands of the boreal dragonborn, fighting against invading forces led by Magnus Strabo (mentioned in Act 7). Surkiv was native to those lands, and Alexandros was a sort-of warrior pilgrim from a distant island of dragon-worshippers.
Both of these new characters were prisoners on the very ship that Garo and Zeke have been sent to investigate. The ship had been abandoned when Alexandros' drake companion, Ion, loosened his muzzle and used his breath weapon to tear a hole in the hull.
The two prisoners were freed, and the group investigated the boat. Documents onboard suggested that the contents of the boat were items stolen by Strabo in the invasion that were being taken to his private collection. Dragonborn weapons, cultural items, dragonborn eggs, and even Alexandros, Ion, and Surkiv themselves! The heroes had a dim view of a man who would steal eggs!
Some of Strabo's men appeared on the scene: veteran soldiers from the Second Legion. These men had been sent to collect things from the wreckage. After a tense stand-off, combat ensued, the soldiers were defeated, and some even killed. Somewhat controversially, Garo dipped into the party's precious supply of diamonds to revivify them.
Tumblr media
The Forest Hag
General Salvius urged the party to carry on to mainland Cantia. Strabo was landing there (as noticed in Act 8). His reputation suggested he would punish the local population for their recent uprising, and since the False Moon was now gone, they would have no ability to fight back.
After travelling across the channel, the party met a kobold bard called Algo, who belonged to a new player to the group. Algo had been displaced by the war, and was just trying to survive; he tagged along with the party, grateful of their protection.
The group were preyed upon by a forest hag. Feigning to be under attack by wolves, she appeared in the form of Media Bellicent, the last of a royal line of Cantia, ousted by the lycanthrope rebels. Truthfully, though, the hag's home had been taken over by the real Media Bellicent and her were-bear bodyguard. The hag tried to trick the heroes into fighting the were-bear but failed; she was killed.
The heroes learned that the hag had been working with the lycanthrope rebels, and was keeping other members of the Bellicent family captive in her basement. These poor children had perished and now haunted the basement. The heroes put these ghosts to peace by dispatching the spirits and burying the remains. Zeke, however, used his sword Asurath to "claim" the soul of the young girl Alula Bellicent; he could now summon her at will. (She was not especially powerful as a combatant but was potentially useful as a scout or distraction. During later dream-visitations to his sword's "interior", he'd find her living happily with his paternal ancestors.)
Tumblr media
Media encouraged the party to help her defend the people of Cantia. She had a number of plans how they could help. But Garo was convinced the party could do better elsewhere. He wanted to investigate Strabo's legally-dubious personal collection, believing that it would be easier to tarnish the man's reputation and have him removed from his position than it would be to fight him and his soldiers. It would be unlikely that his replacement would be as harsh and merciless.
Media wished them luck. The party returned the Bellicent family torc (first found in in Act Two) to her. As she was of the Bellicent bloodline, she could use its full powers. Media made arrangements for the party to fly on to their next destination on the backs of griffons.
During this flight, Garo would reveal his past. His blood-line was thought to trace back to that of the god St Cuthbert. This was quite a prize, and Magnus Strabo had arranged for his daughter Katarina to marry him. It was to be an important political marriage. But Garo was not exactly into women, and he turned her down rather than live a lie. This made him something of a pariah. He threw himself into his crusader duties and tried to keep out of the public eye.
(This came as a surprise to me as DM. But it was so good, I absolutely ran with it.)
Port Cissylvania
The documents pointed the heroes to a sleepy fishing town called Port Cissylvania (Port CS). They would spend a long time here, doing various things. As I did with Act 7, I'm going to document things by “quest-chain” rather than chronologically. In reality, these stories were interleaved.
Tumblr media
This is the map I used for Port CS. It's actually a map of Carrickfergus. If you search for maps of the place, you'll find lots of drawn art for it from different time periods.
Roster Changes
Some players would change characters during this Act.
Clever Clover the tabaxi rogue would replace Algo. Then Clever Clover would depart late in this act as the player left the game. (This was a player new to TTRPGs, and this was a tough game to join in part-way through. There was no drama in this exit!)
Trystan Valerius, a human, would replace Alexandros. Trystan was a bard at some point and a bladesinger wizard at another as his player experimented with different classes.
Myra's player returned from a hiatus to play Aden Heskin the half-elven warlock.
Flutter would make a return late in this chapter, displacing Surkiv.
And, of course, not all players were present for every adventure.
Tumblr media
Barry the Baker
As the party arrived at Port CS, they were met by a familiar figure: Barry. Barry had joined the lycan forces on Cantia as footsoldier, though he was not a lycanthrope himself. The heroes spared him in Act 5 at Fort Nelisa, and Cyrus had given him gold so he could start up a civilian life.
Turns out, he'd done exactly that! He was now the owner of a bakery in Port CS, and his signature pastry was called the "Sticky Cyrus".
Ship Fiends
The party were approached by Karl Burr (first seen Act 4) and Felix Spurius (first seen Act 1). A Lyrian Guild Society ship -- the Absolute Advantage -- anchored offshore had been overrun by fiends. The evacuating crew had alerted Karl Burr, the local Guild representative. Karl in turn alerted Felix, as the ship was transporting a magical stone tablet and a kobold called Taklak (first seen Act 2) for him. Karl wanted the situation dealt with quietly -- without the authorities asking questions. Felix wanted Taklak and the tablet saved. The heroes leapt in a longboat and rowed across.
On the way over, an imp teleported on the party's longboat! The creature was delivering a parchment to Zeke -- a contract. This, of course, made the party quite curious, but no actions were taken. Zeke would surreptitiously sign the contract while on the Absolute Advantage, while no-one was looking.
Tumblr media
This represented the contract in-game, made with Foundry's tools.
On-board the ship, the heroes had several run-in with devils: spiked and barbed devils, a duplicitous incubus/succubus pair, and two powerful bone devils. Surkiv brought the arrogant bone devil leader down to size with incredible grappling and pinning moves, holding the fiend down while his comrades dealt with other fiends.
The party would find a cowering kobold called Bilgewurm, one of the Absolute Advantage's crew. This poor kobold was the reason for the fiends: he had activated Felix's stone tablet (similar to the spell tablet in Act 2), summoning a fiend. This fiend forced Bilgewurm to keep activating the stone, but luckily Bilgewurm managed to escape with invisibility. Unable to swim, the poor kobold just had to hide and hope for the best.
At some point, the topic of Zeke's contract would come up. It was discussed. Most of the party disapproved that Zeke had signed it, but did not take any action. Garo quite strongly disapproved.
Ultimately, the ship was cleared. Taklak, Bilgewurm, and the tablet were recovered. Garo was not happy that the tablet was going to be studied, rather than destroyed, but Felix assured him that the local Imperial College campus had a very secure anti-magic lock-up for such things.
Tumblr media
College Fiends
Despite being a small fishing town, Port CS had a large Imperial College campus. The wizards there enjoyed the relative isolation. Trystan was an accomplished student there.
A cambion named Laila enacted a plan to steal from the college. She wanted the fiend-summoning stone from the Absolute Advantage. She also kidnapped the college's fiend expert, Archmage Spellwatch. She used Zeke's contract to allow succubi and incubi to access the vicinity of Port CS. From there, these cunning creatures infiltrated the college and charmed or impersonated the staff.
But there was a problem: the vault where the stone was kept was protected with anti-magic to suppress any magic items kept there. Charmed agents would be un-charmed in such a field, magical disguises would cease, and her succubi and incubi allies were not powerful enough to defeat the golems that guarded the vault. So, she decided to send a charmed Felix, and then later a charmed Trystan, to lie to the heroes and have them dispatch the golems.
Laila's plans didn't work, though. The heroes managed to undo the charm on both Felix and Trystan. They proceeded to free the staff and students from charms, rooting out the fiends in their midst. The heroes suffered a lot of weird magic thrown at them by charmed and confused students and staff. At one point, Flutter separated from the group and had to fend off multiple fiends alone long enough for help to arrive, making good use of the sunbeam spell.
Tumblr media
I made a macro in Foundry to randomly select spells. I figured students at the college would not necessarily have prepared spells for combat, but rather would have prepared strange spells related to their studies.
A final confrontation happened in the basement of the college. Laila, it turned out, was Zeke's cousin (though a distant one)! She entreated Zeke to join her so they could remake their ancestral homeland of Laconia together!
Zeke refused, a battle ensued. Efforts were made to capture Laila, but she slipped free using fiendish powers of teleportation, taking Archmage Spellwatch with her. The fight with Laila's remaining minions was a hard one, but the party managed to win out.
Burt Cobb
While attending to other matters on the island, the party would sometimes run into an older human male called Burt Cobb. Burt was guiding a group of refugee orphans who had fled the war on Cantia. He taught them to fish and generally survive.
Cobb was a devout follower of Pelor, and spoke about religion to Garo.
Museum
The heroes pursued a lead regarding Strabo, and found he had contracted a local taxidermist to preserve some dragonborn corpses. She was kind enough to draw a sketch of the person Strabo sent to do the transaction.
Using scrying magic purchased from the local branch of the Lyrian Guild Society, the heroes saw this man was on the western coast of Cissylvania Isle, along with a number of dwarves.
In hot pursuit, the party arrived at Foxtail Grotto. This was a location of historic importance, as the last emperor of Lyria was held hostage here in his youth. Strabo had funded a museum to be built here.
Tumblr media
Foxtail Grotto, once a bandit hideout. The story was inspired by something that apparently happened to Julius Caesar.
The museum area was being carved out underground by the dwarves. An illusionist, Ellyjobell Timbers, was creating an illusory hologram-like recreation of the historic events at Foxtail Grotto. Another mage, Wyns Rand, had been paid to create a permanent teleportation circle at the site.
Supervising all this was Claduis Ensis, the man from the sketch. And with him was Katarina Strabo -- Garo's spurned fiance!
A very tense moment ensues. The party are very suspicious of Claudius, and he of them. Katarina and Garo, of course, share an awkward meeting.
During this, Surkiv and Zeke explore the museum. They find exhibits that enrage them both. Survik finds souvenired "prizes" from his homeland, including dragonborn eggs. Zeke sees an exhibit about his ancestors' failed rebellion, and finds tiefling skulls, including one of his grandfather.
This animosity turns into a fight with Cladius, but Katarina and Garo calm the situation down. The party leave Foxtail Grotto.
Cassia
The visit to the museum had clued the heroes in on the likelihood of dragonborn children being raised somewhere on the island of Cissylvania. Claudius, apparently, was routinely visiting these children who were being cared for by a figured called "Cassia". The heroes managed to learn from the orphans in Burt Cobb's care that a suspicious figure matching Cladius' description would head into a particular forest on the island.
And so the heroes went to this forest. Two faerie dragons -- Sunflare and Corona -- tried to confuse and disorient the party but failed, and the party arrived at Cassia's home. No-one was home so the party intruded to search for (and find) a number of clues.
Cassia did eventually return home, with a number of dragonborn children in tow. She was very hospitable, explaining she was a reluctant carer for the children. Though she loved them, she did not approve that Claudius was training them to be spies against their own kind. But she felt powerless: as a druid and hence part of the church-outlawed Tetrarchy, she was essentially a fugitive and owed her freedom to Strabo (and therefore Cladius).
Tumblr media
Cassia's home was near Lake Nemi, a beautiful secluded body of water hiding a sunken temple. Inspired by a real place.
The Flooded Temple
Cassia mentioned that Strabo stored some items in the nearby flooded ruins of a temple. The heroes, eager to get some dirt on Strabo, set out. A naiad called Syrinx guided them, giving them water-breathing, and pleading with them to help her lost love Iphianassa.
The nereid Iphianassa was the guardian of the flooded temple, magically forced into the job by Cassia. In turn, Iphianassa had charmed a number of aquatic animals to guard the temple. The heroes prevailed, freeing Iphianassa from her duties, and allowing her to reunite with her love Syrinx. The party also found Strabo's stash, and apart from treasure and magical gear it contained a lot of contraband items from the Tetrarchy.
Tumblr media
Betrayal and Capture
When the party returned, Cassia invited them to have a meal. This was a trap. The food was laced with a sedative-like poison. Moreover, Claudius had been called, and was able to make the distance in the time the heroes explored the sunken temple. Claudius led a small army of legionaries to Cassia's house and surrounded it. Cassia pleaded with the heroes to surrender, not wishing for them to die.
Poisoned and surrounded, the party had little ability to win. Some fled. Garo and Alexandros remained to be captured -- defiant not to leave.
Claudius accused Alexandros of war crimes, both further back assisting dragonborn against the legions, and more recently killing legionaries on the shipwrecked boat. By name-dropping the names of killed legionaries, Claduis tried to rile up the legionaries, but Garo countered with a speech on morality and justice, and no legionary volunteered to execute Alexandros. So Cladius did the deed himself, slitting Alexandros' throat and throwing his corpse off a nearby coastal cliff. The rest of the party watched on in horror from the tree-line.
(Alexandros' player was okay with this, as the player wanted to change from Alexandros to Trystan. Alexandros' corpse would be fished from the bottom of the cliff at an early, safe, opportunity by Zeke.)
Animal Form
The heroes would later return to Cassia's home, for reasons explained in the next section.
Cassia was devastated when her dragonborn "children" were taken away. As a powerful druid, her sadness bled into the forest around her home, turning it dark and unwelcoming. The party had to battle a malevolent fey entity called The Spirit of Lake Nemi to proceed through the forest.
The heroes arrived at Cassia's home. Corona and Sunflare sought to keep the heroes away from Cassia, and used a one-charge wand of mass polymorph to turn the heroes into small animals. Undeterred, the party worked together in their new forms to conquer the obstacles and animal guardians in Cassia's home.
Tumblr media
I had made several stat blocks for the occasion. Stewart the cat, Bertie the snake, Cherry the crow, and Vincent the (relatively) giant crab. These were past pets of Cassia's that the faerie dragons had known. The players had to work together as these animals to navigate the "dungeon" of Cassia's home and battle some of the animals inside.
The heroes would confront the faerie dragons and break Corona's concentration to undo the polymorph. From there, they made a dark discovery: Cassia, alone in her bedroom, was dying! She had tried to take her life with a herbal poison. The heroes, working fast, cured her.
Cassia and the heroes were both victims of Magnus Strabo. The heroes convinced Cassia to help them (see more below).
Strabo's Arrival
Things were heating up in Port CS. Garo was taken prisoner for killing Strabo's legionaries. But Garo had sent for help prior, and it arrived. Not a charging brigade of mounted crusaders, but rather, a Pelorite priest named Vincent Pearson.
Meanwhile, Surkiv had decided to leave. Paying to be smuggled out by sea with the unbroken eggs from the museum, he left in the early morning.
Tumblr media
Three large transport ships loom out of the mist. Your little boat's pilot mutters to himself as he wrenches the rudder to keep clear. Taking care to stay under the canvas, you watch the middle vessel sail past. Standing near the ship's fore is a Lyrian officer. You've seen him before, leading the forces which attacked your homeland. Stocky, balding, but still severe in his uniform. His cold gaze is directed forward, but as you pass he turns to glace at your ship. You can swear he is looking right at you, despite the distance.
Magnus Strabo had arrived at Port CS with a large number of his Second Legion troops. The heroes' investigations and interferences had given cause for the general to come sort matters out first-hand.
It was impossible to keep this from the public eye, and the eye of Port CS officials. Legal accusations were being flung both ways, essentially boiling down to Garo versus Strabo. A court date was arranged. Pearson arranged for Garo's freedom, confident that Garo was not the type to run.
Felix, who had once represented the heroes in court before (see Act 3), could not guarantee his presence. Instead he managed to get Trystan Valerius, an accomplished student at the Port CS Imperial College, to be Garo's legal representative. So began a rush for evidence and witnesses (including Cassia, as mentioned above).
Trystan and Garo had a tense meeting with Strabo in the general's war camp just outside of Port CS. It was mostly a psychological clash, each side trying to goad and rattle the other, with neither succeeding. Strabo made his disdain clear: Garo's meddling had endangered the Lyrian Republic by distracting him from his war against the lycanthrope rebels. He also expressed his dislike for the dragonborn, and wondered why Garo should champion their cause.
Some of Strabo's men had contracted lycanthropy in the battle against the rebels, and he used these men in a suicide attack on the heroes. The heroes defeated the werewolves, and spared their lives, managing to cure them with one of the Umbralenses. They were so grateful they became witnesses on the heroes' side.
Court Case
The date of the case arrived. It was a big event, the town's small temple to Minerva was packed. The local priestess acted as judge. Both sides were given access to a quota of zone of truth spell usages.
Tumblr media
Garo takes the stand as Trystan's witness.
Strabo was represented by Aemilius Lepidus, one of his top captains. Lepuidus tried to defuse claims that Strabo was involved in an illegal war against the dragonborn by producing official orders from the Lyrian Senate. He also cited laws around prisoners of war, intelligence gathering, and other such activities.
Lepidus's next tactic was to paint a picture of Garo being an obsessed individual, hounding Strabo over minor things. He called upon Karatina Strabo, and asked questions about their failed engagement and subsequent fall from prestige. Lepidus insinuated that Garo's obsession was fuelled by a desire to see revenge upon the Strabo name.
Cladius then testified, quoting Garo's determination to bring Strabo to justice, painting those comments as obsession and fixation devoid of presumption of innocence. Cladius alleged that Garo wanted to besmirch Strabo's reputation by any means to force a legal clash.
Lepidus called Ezekial to testify invoking the zone of truth. As a known ally of Garo, Zeke's tiefling heritage and family history were used to suggest that his feelings are motivated by revenge.
Finally, Garo was called to the stand, zone of truth invoked again. Garo was forced to admit he was given no official orders to pursue Strabo, and that he had done so on his own accord. It was insinuated that this was a trivial folly, at worst a minor matter, hardly worthy of a crusader's time; all this fortifying the case that Garo was motivated by revenge.
Tumblr media
Trystan counter-examined each of these witnesses, and when it was his turn to call, brought in a number of witnesses and submitted considerable evidence. Trystan's strategy was to paint Strabo was clearly involved with some Tetrarchy materials and affairs, which apart from being illegal were highly damaging to his reputation. If Strabo was to leave the court with a mild penalty, his battered reputation would at least mean he was stripped of rank.
(As a DM, I have notes about Lepidus' actions, and only memories about Trystans. Hopefully that explains the disparity in details.)
It was a fierce contest, but as Trystan got going, his strategy gave him bonuses in the dice-rolling mini-game that represented the court's opinion. Magnus Strabo's case fell apart as he himself took the stand under a zone of truth.
Strabo, furious as opinion turned against him, launched into a tirade that only worsened this.
"You crusaders hunt demons and undead and pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. Good for you. But do you have any idea what real war is? Have you battled the sharp teeth of a dragonborn, or the hulking mass of an orc? Have you seen hordes of them, serried arrays howling for your blood? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. I am the thin steel line that keeps these threats from the doorsteps of your churches and homes. As Naso once said, 'let them hate us as long as they fear us.'"
He gave Katarina Strabo a meaningful look. She cast a spell (word of recall) and she disappeared along with her father and his legal team.
Strabo's Coup
Moments after this disappearance, horns began to sound. Garo looked to the priestess acting as judge. She confirmed: Strabo was now an enemy of the state to be captured. The heroes sprung into action. Stepping outside, they saw that Strabo's men were launching an assault on the town!
First concern: one of Strabo's naval destroyers had flung a burning trebuchet shot at the temple! Zeke, with Flutter's help, managed to fling a fireball to deflect the shot enough to miss the building, giving enough time for everyone to get outside.
Legionaries assaulted the temple grounds, and the heroes fought to hold them back long enough for everyone at the court case to get away.
Elsewhere, the town was under strong attack. The heroes made a plan, and tackled each of the front-lines, moving as a group from one location to the next.
Tumblr media
First they went to the harbour. Venturing to the end of the pier, Flutter used reverse gravity on the naval destroyer. It rose in the air, turning about listlessly. Flutter mercifully waited for the crew to swim away, then released the spell, causing the vessel to crash down and break. Strabo's forces lost their artillery.
Next they went to the town square. Port CS had a small garrison of elite troops, and a number of border guard, and these forces were -- for the moment -- holding back Strabo's troops in the choke-holds of the city streets. The heroes dove into the fray, helping even the odds, and allowing the local troops time to retreat and regroup. Meanwhile, Trystan summoned a magnificent mansion in the middle of the town square into which many of the town's civilians could seek shelter.
After a quick detour to help Felix, and the party headed to the town's small castle. Strabo had entered into the keep through a hole earlier punched in the outer wall by the destroyer. Local troops tried to re-take their keep, clashing with Strabo's at the front gate. That distraction allowed the heroes to mostly (but not entirely) enter without opposition.
They arrived at the Aediles' chamber. Strabo was sitting in one of the chairs normally occupied by the ruling Aediles. One of the Aediles was hurt and unconscious on the chamber floor. With Strabo was Katarina, Wyns Rand, Lepidus, and a number of soldiers.
Strabo offered a truce. He would claim that the town was set upon by lycanthropy, killing anyone in a position to disagree. In return, the heroes would stand down.
Strabo: "Come in. Let them in. There's been enough violence today. Clearly I've won. I'm not a heartless man. Why don't we hammer out an agreement? We'll go along with my story. That this town had been infiltrated by lycanthropes. I get the two Aediles, Salvius and son, and the judge at the temple here. You can go by boat or teleporter, after staying as my guest for a while to ensure you don't cause further trouble. Oh, and I want that sword. I won it fair and square. Katarina: "Garo. I made him promise to let you live. Father's right, there's been enough death today."
Of course, the heroes did not agree.
Combat broke out. The hectic fight saw some cross-interference, but largely the battle consisted of a few smaller battles or duels. Clever Clover duelled with, and defeated, Aemilius Lepidus; who died ever the loyal right-hand man to Strabo. Katarina mostly flung supporting spells, not wishing to commit to more deadly combat.
Tumblr media
Garo shines with a powerful holy spell as the rest of the party battle around the chamber.
Flutter and Trystan had to first deal with Wyns Rand, who used his favourite tactic of casting greater invisibility and throwing high-level spells with impunity. They eventually managed to corner him, frying him with a lightning bolt. The pair also held back reinforcements from the castle, flooding the main entrance with nasty magic and dealing with those soldiers who entered via other ways.
There was a moment where Flutter used a scroll of mass polymorph to turn many of the foes into creatures. Flutter's mind must have been remembering the underwater temple, because he chose to turn them into something he'd seen there: horse-sized giant pistol shrimp. This threw the room into chaos for a while but had limited long-term effect between Katarina's dispel magic and the fact that the shrimps reverted after enough damage was dealt to them.
Tumblr media
It was a glorious fight. Strabo's "gimmick" wasn't that he was a raw powerhouse of a boss. Rather, his wide range of abilities was meant to reflect a highly strategic thinker and master swordsman. I couldn't have done all those Recharges without Foundry to help! (All of those "strikes" could replace any of his four attacks. I know it was wrong of me to put them in the Actions area, but hey, until now no-one but me has seen this NPC sheet.)
Zeke and Garo fought Strabo. Claudius joined into this localised fight, springing from his hidden location. This was a tough battle, especially against Strabo whose attacks were debilitating.
"Was that your father who was stupid enough to seek me out on the plains of Skala? He thought a general a soft target. Even decades on I will show you just as I showed him, I can carry myself in a fight."
In the end, Ezekial managed to strike a killing blow on Claudius, knocking him out a second-story window in the process, avenging Alexandros' death. Strabo was struck down by Garo; there were thoughts to heal him but Katarina pleaded that he be allowed to die.
What officers remained in Strabo's army did not have the dedication to carry on this fight without their leader, and stood down.
The heroes had saved Port Cissylvania. Strabo's attack only cemented his nature as a villain that the court case already had exposed. The heroes were lauded, and would have a monument built to them in the town square.
Four bas reliefs are carved, each into a face of a square fountain-base in the town's main street. The designs are artful, and depict a scene's events more than any sort of realistic perspective or proportions. The work is richly detailed and features a consistent and clear style. The first image depicts the interior of the Temple of Minerva when it was used to hold Magnus Strabo's trial. Central to the scene are Trystan and Strabo. Trystan extends a hand with pointed index finger, while Strabo glowers back, resting his hand on the pommel of his sword. Around each main figure are their supporting posse, and the artist has included Ezekial, Garo, Flutter, Vincent Pearson, Katarina Strabo, and Aemilius Lepidus. A concerned judge and crowd fill out the image. The second image depicts a crowded town street. On the image's left, Second Legion soldiers clash with Evocati and Limitanei. Ezekial and Flutter support the defenders by blasting Second Legion soldiers with magic. On the image's right, an opulent tower is shown, and Trystan guides fleeing civilians inside. Garo helps carried an injured civilian toward the tower. The third image contains an image of a boat suspended above the water. Sailors fall from the boat. The artist has drawn the tilting boat firing a flaming catapult projectile to the right of the image, where Ezekial Zarken is shown blasting it with magic. To the image's left, Flutter raises his feathered arms toward the levitating boat. The final image depicts the Aedile's chambers within Fort CS. In the centre, Ezekial duels with Magnus Strabo. Garo stands behind Ezekial, glowing with holy light, weapon raised. Katarina stands mirroring this position, posture and illumination behind her father. On the image's right, Trystan whips Aemilius Lepidus, who raises a shield in defence. On the image's left, Flutter holds a Second Legion centurion and several soldiers at away from the slumped form of Aedile Daetris Meliscient with blasts of magic. Hidden away in the corner, under one of the chamber's thrones, is a pistol shrimp.
Fisherman's Festival
The upcoming Fisherman's Festival in Port CS was given extra importance this year as the town celebrated not being destroyed by Strabo. The heroes, of course, were the main celebrities.
There were some pieces to pick up before the heroes could celebrate...
The heroes would examine Cladius' body. He had a curious hidden magical tattoo, and other strange magics about him.
Alexandros, whose body had been recovered prior, was restored to life by Garo's holy magic.
Ezekial's dreams now included Claudius Ensis battling with his ancestors. Zeke theorised that the soul of Claudius was also "inside" the sword now, fitting with its behaviours in the past. This was troubling.
Cassia, who had been held in a cell due to her Tetrarchy links, had been tormented by Claudius after Strabo's forces had taken the keep. In an effort to extract information, Claudius had tortured and killed the faerie dragon Corona. Cassia left Sunflare with Flutter (becoming his familiar), and she and Alexandros took the dragonborn children and ventured by boat to catch up with Surkiv.
Tumblr media
Strabo's funeral pyre.
Strabo's funeral was held, and many made the trip to be present, including those harmed by him such as the now-Queen Bellicent. The queen's torc had helped her hold her people together against Strabo's invasion and the aftermath of the war. Katarina spoke as his body was cremated, mentioning his impressive military career, his patriotism, but also his darker side: in battling monsters, he became as relentless as one.
This chapter comes to a close with the heroes enjoying the festival games and dancing. Ziffy (first seen Act 7) arrived from the Feywild to spend some time with Zeke. We see Flutter and Garo slowly turning around the dance floor, with the short kenku standing on the crusader's armoured boots.
The Battle Atop Arcadion's Ladder
I'll squeeze one last thing in that happened during the wrap-up period. The heroes used legend lore to learn more about Ezekial's sword Asurath.
The heroes saw an epic battle from times long past. Mortals had risen up against the fiendish tyrant Arcadion; an alliance of tieflings, elves, Cuthbertine crusaders, and others. A band of mighty heroes ascended a mountain-side staircase to battle Arcadion at the peak as a battle raged below.
(The players took the roles of these level 20 heroes. They were given pre-made characters, but could pick prepared spells as they battled. They also had secret orders, which would come into play later.)
Tumblr media
The mighty heroes were led by the tiefling Ezekial Charillos. With him was a winter eladrin called Zephyra, a previous student of Lady Xilo with powers similar to Cyrus (first seen Act 1); a Cuthbertine crusader who looked a lot like Burt Cobb; and a druid whose name has been lost to time.
At the start of this scene, the heroes witnessed the sword Asurath being gifted to Ezekial by the drow blacksmith Celle Brimbor. The necromancer Cazna (first seen Act 5) was present an ally: her undead army kept the fiend reinforcements off the heroes' back so they could confront Arcadion without distraction.
It's at that moment that a drow pushes through Cazna's little army. She rushes up to Ezekial, a sheathed sword in hand. "I got here… in time…" she puffs. "It's here. It's ready. Asurath." She presents it to Ezekial. "A blade forged from three sources. Carburised ironwood from the Outrunner's oldest grove, near-impervious but still growing. The zinc-heavy metal of their own soul-snaring blades, to keep them from rebirth. And wrought iron from the Shadowfell, to render those trapped within despondent and calm. You must land the killing blow on Arcadion with this."
Tumblr media
Arcadion summons a barrier, thinking he has trapped Ezekial. But the plucky tiefling replies "I'm not trapped in here with you. You're trapped in here with me!"
Eventually the heroes defeat Arcadion, and seal him within the sword Asurath.
But then those secret orders kick in. Arnus demands Ezekial hand over Asurath, claiming it is too dangerous and must be cleansed by holy magic. Zephyra, seeking to disrupt Asurath, plays the role of "referee" to this argument and tricks the pair into taking the sword, shattering it to pieces with her chaotic magic. Arnus scrambles to pick up two of the pieces before magically teleporting away. (This became in-game history, and will come into play in later acts!)

Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar. It's All or Nothing in a Desperate Search....
Now out on #VOD is Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar! This #scifi #independentfilm stars Michael Paré and all we can think of was his role in Starhunter (a good thing). Full #moviereview at:
Uncork’d Entertainment Available on VOD The 70s and 80s were an interesting time for fans of episodic science fiction. Whether that’d be on the big screen or small, what Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar offers is a lot of nostalgia because it brings all that ethos into a fairly entertaining SyFy Channel style movie of the week. Filmmaker Garo Setian most likely had a limited budget, and to cast…

4:38 A.M.
After investigating the rumors of innocent survivors being mauled leaving behind their bloodied skeletal remains and a blood trail leading to a warehouse where she can hear the screaming of a woman who was taken to be eaten under the moonlight. Right there to save the woman she is confronted with another one of the horrors. this is the horror Lunarken in the flesh flashing her colorful bright body luminating through the night for the moonlight has reached it's zenith along with her bloodlust standing before the dark hunter with a smile on her face while an odd gold orb floats around the horror.
Tumblr media
Hsien-Ko placed her hands into her sleeves while her sister and her ring stares at the gold orb feeling the immense power and the sound of a heart beat.
" This is gonna be a long night. "
{ " Hsien-Ko! Be careful with that orb... " }
" What's special about it? "
Tumblr media
" That orb is her true form and she won't hesitate to tear you a new hole. Better be fast on your feet. "
Tumblr media
After hearing what they said and knowing what to do, Hsien-Ko channels the energy of T-Erebus and the soul of Garo within her as a crystalline structure emerged her face to form a helmet in the shape of a golden wolf along with the rest all around parts of her body acting as armor to protect her from damage in case.
' KRRRRSSCCH! '
Now full prepared to eliminate the horror in front of her the now armed Jiangshi with all four of her arms with modified long sleeves showing off each large clawed gauntlet.
" Let's go... "
Tumblr media
Amused Lunarken twirls her fingers as her true form, the golden orb grew sharp spikes flying straight towards the jiangshi at such incredible speech as Hsien-Ko used all four of her arms to negate and and retaliated against the orb with sheer ferocity while she moves around avoiding the gold orb and it's spikes.
' KKKLLLSSSH! '
' KKKKLLLSSH! '
' KKKLLLSSH! '
Hsien-Ko realized now that she should have kept her mouth shut for the orb is far more troubling than the horror itself as she watch in amusement which sent her off edge in a fit of rage.
" OKAY FUCK THIS!!! "
Hsien-Ko forcibly grabbed the orb with her bare hands, crushing it with rage building up inside of her.
' PWACK! '
Lunarken burst out screaming in agony for her true form is immediately destroyed by the jiangshi.
" GAAAAAAAHHHHH DAMN YOOOOOOUUUUU ALL!!!!! "
In her final moments Lunarken's body has disintegrated into moths leaving behind what remains of the ancient darkstalker left.
Tumblr media
The orb too turned to ash in her hands as she look on at the moths flying into the sky knowing that this most likely won't be the end of this particular horror. If that were true than the jiangshi will be ready. As of now it seems she's really gone. The jiangshi pass by the woman whose screaming at her in fear before running off the other way.
" Another night huh? "
Tumblr media
" Yeah though I must admit you had killed her rather quickly out of anger ya know? "
Tumblr media
" Stupid darkstalker find it all so amusing to waste my time so I put an end to it. "
{ " Hot headed are we? " }
" Ugh. Not you too... "
