I must admit this is not my favorite part of the Japanese education system, but my school was kind enough to have someone pick me up and drop me off because the wind and rain were so strong.

SO instead of Monday (like I had mentally prepared for), my first classes were on Wednesday! Four. In. A. Row. All me, all 45 minutes, in front of children who really don’t speak or understand much English. Of course, I speak Japanese, but its ENGLISH class so while I could have done my self-introduction in Japanese, I did it in English. Pictures and hand gestures were my best friends. I am once again fortunate to have schools with access to technology such as computers and projectors, so I can use PowerPoints. I also let the kids ask me questions and had them make gamecards for their desk so I can see their names (cleverly disguised English writing practice). When there was time left, I also had the kids give a short self-intro to me (My name is ～ I like ～).

I have loved making these since I learned how in 4th grade, so I decided to blow the kids away with my awesome transitions and animations. I spent almost an entire week of work over the summer researching good topics, inserting pictures, and editing details (many thanks to Lara for checking and correcting my English to be at the appropriate level and dad for finding and sending so many great pictures to me!). In the end I had three PowerPoints: my regular length 3rd – 6th grade one, a 1st and 2nd grade one (larger and more pictures), and a half-length one for teachers who didn’t want me to teach the whole class. And then a week ago today something really fun happened: my entire PowerPoint crashed, and ALL the pictures disappeared. We still don’t know what happened, but the older saved version was completely corrupted. So, I found an older draft I had emailed to myself and began again – this time on my own computer instead of a computer filled with Japanese kanji that I can’t read. It was not a fun day, but I got through it! I checked through the slideshow with a few teachers and was reassured the kids would be able to understand and be interested in them.

So back to Wednesday! I taught straight through the first 4 periods of the day: 4th grade, two 5th grade classes, and 6th grade respectively. I have to say out of them all the 4th graders were the most fun to teach – which was perfect for my first class. They were loud but very excited to hear about me and loved the true/false slides a lot. When class was over, I returned to the teacher’s lounge only to hear a loud “Excuse me - is Ms. Rachel here?” and was given a paper airplane. The rest of the classes were fun as well, but nowhere near as excited. On Thursday I did my self-introduction for the 3rd grade class and then a regular class for 4th grade. I am beginning to think Thursdays will be my favorite because I get to go home at 2:15 pm after teaching only two classes! Finally, today (Friday) I taught four more classes at my second school: 2nd grade, 5th grade, 4th grade, and 6th grade. This school was definitely a different experience with different teachers and students, but I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I am exhausted.
