Siegfried and Gerald
(Random thoughts on these two, including some s4 spoilers, below the cut)
Taking a general view, it’s hard to imagine two people less alike that Siegfried Farnon and Gerald Hammond. Siegfried is a loud vet with sporting inclinations, who thinks he’s good at DIY but isn’t. Gerald is an introverted seemingly unsporty man, who is great at hands on work but freaks out somewhat at things veterinary.
They do have similarities though.
The first is that their families mean the world to them. Gerald is happy to uproot to take care of his sister, and clearly worries greatly about her. Siegfried’s family may largely be found rather than blood, but he was willing to have his qualifications stripped to protect James, and proved he would do anything to look after Tristan.
The other, probably more clear, similarity is with Audrey. They are both clearly in love with her, and want her in their lives. But they were also both willing to let her go because they thought it was what she wanted. They both want to be with her, but they want her to be happy more.
It could also be argued that they’re both more interested in having her in their lives as a friend than they are at risking moving things forward romantically. Gerald tells her directly that he’s happy to be her friend, and he would never have made a move if she hadn’t. Siegfried admittedly is a little harder to read in this regard, because we haven’t got to a relationship (yet) between him and Audrey. But from Christmas 1938 it’s clear he’s starting to realise his feelings, and Christmas 1939 he may well have been about to tell her how he felt before she ran off. Siegfried is clearly a man who likes his routine and the status quo. We see that through his reaction to anybody new, and any changes to his house and business. So it’s fair to assume that if the status quo with Audrey is comfortable he might want to stick with it for as long as he can.
Where I am hoping they will now diverge with Audrey, is in making their true feelings known and fighting for her to stay with them. Gerald took a long time to really let her know how he felt, and he never really seemed to push forward at all with their relationship. She initiated the first two sets of kisses we see. He initiated the third, but only after she had made the decision to go with him, and he had asked her if that made them engaged. I would hope that, while being gentlemanly, Siegfried would be more of an initiator in their relationship, and he would make sure she knows how much he loves her throughout. I would also hope that when it comes to getting engaged he would make some decent effort in that regard, or at least make it romantic.
And then we come to Audrey’s reaction to both of them. She initiated the kisses with Gerald but very little else. She seems incapable of being straightforward and certain with him, whereas she can be easily with Siegfried. For example Gerald asks her if she’s sure about leaving, and she never answers him, whereas when Siegfried asks if she’s sure about staying she interrupts him in her eagerness to answer, and does so again when he asks if he’s taken her for granted.
The one time that really isn’t the case is with leaving them. She takes some considerable time, we can assume, before finally telling Siegfried she’s leaving, and even then she can’t tell him verbally. She writes it down and he guesses that she’s leaving him. But when she decides she can’t go with Gerald she seems to go straight to his door and tells him fairly easily.
She seems to accept Gerald’s statement that he and Rock will leave quickly, with very little concern beyond the immediate pang of sadness. However, when Siegfried does his best to make her feel like her leaving isn’t bothering him, that suggestion does seem to get to her.
So in conclusion to this long rambling diatribe, which may or may not make any sense, Siegfried and Gerald have their close similarities and stark differences. Both want Audrey to be happy, whether they end up happy themselves or not. But only one of them, when all is said and done, seems to make her truly contented.

I do enjoy how the Audrey and Gerald relationship has developed because it's exactly what she needed. Audrey needed a relationship away from Skeldale House, something that was solely hers and one that could develop romantically without the added complication of being employee and employer.
As much as I am an Audrey and Siegfried person, I can see how Gerald and Audrey would have a happy life together and Gerald has been equally supportive and kind to Audrey, never pushing too hard and respecting her boundaries.
It's very clear that Audrey and Siegfried care about each other, and their relationship will become romantic. However, in any slow burn love story there are always the people and relationships that help the lovers come out of their shell romantically; before realizing that relationship isn't quite right and the person they actually love was standing in front of them the whole time. I'm happy that we get to see Audrey rekindle this romantic side of her openly with someone because it means she's thinking about what she wants and looking to the future.

Mrs. Audrey Hall deserves nothing short of the best. The trouble is she hasn’t believed that for a long time, as we’ve seen through three seasons of All Creatures Great and Small. Instead, she’s felt shame about her failed marriage and her ruptured relationship with her son. It is, perhaps, this view of herself as a disgraced woman that has led Mrs. Hall to attend to the residents of Skeldale House so graciously. Into this life of atonement walks Gerald Hammond, a man who initially asks for nothing more than two lumps of sugar and the chance to reset her clock.
Following Gerald’s arrival in All Creatures Great and Small 2×02 “Semper Progrediens,” Audrey has slowly admitted him into her life. His advances have typically been framed as invitations that leave her with an out. Call me IF you ever want that clock fixed. I walk my dog down by the brook IF you ever want company. Gerald presumes to move the relationship forward of his own initiative only one time, in 3×04 “What A Balls Up!” Faced with Audrey’s horrified expression, he quickly discards the bouquet of flowers that mark the evening as a date in his mind.

In my excitement I sent you the ship kiss ask without naming a ship ( I think you might have an inkling of which ship lol) but to be official
Siegfried and Audrey
Prompt 34 - to pretend
So, here it is... The prompt was "Pretend" and Siegfried's trying to pretend not to be jealous....
It had all started so innocently, Siegfried thought. One moment you offer them a sherry and a roof over their head, and the next day they are trying to charm your housekeeper.
At first it was only a drunken hug the boy couldn't remember anything about on Boxing Day and on New Year's Eve it was a bouquet of pink roses on Mrs Hall’s small desk. The flowers had replaced the Christmas card from Gerald Hammond, which had actually been quite welcome. If only the flowers would end where the card had met its maker.
Siegfried eyed the present development with suspicion, but not with jealousy, because he wasn't jealous. Of course not. But he knew that this kind of friction could cause serious problems in a working space. He couldn't have his assistant drool over the woman who ran this household with such delicious precision and care.
Aside from that Carmody was just a boy and Mrs Hall a grown woman who had to endure a lot of heartache lately. Carmody may have a crush on her, but Siegfried knew his beautiful housekeeper and it was obvious that she wasn't interested in being wooed by a lad of twenty-two. It was unheard of anyway, was it? A woman of over forty and a lad of twenty-two?
No, he wasn't jealous, because it was unthinkable something romantic could develop between the two of them. He would pretend not to notice the boys’ lingering glances for the time being, but would keep his peace and be ready in case he had to set Carmody's head straight.
“Something wrong, Mr Farnon?” she asked, tearing him out of his daydreams. She was sitting opposite him, watching him as he stared at the impressive bouquet.
“Oh no, nothing, Mrs Hall. I just admired the flowers on your desk. A rare treat in January.”
“It is, innit? Mr Carmody brought them in the other day.”
“Delightful.” That may have sounded more sarcastic than intended. He the crook of her eyebrow and sensed an equally pointed answer directed at him arriving.
“Does it bother you? Only last week you brought me an amaryllis, if I remember correctly.”
“Well, for Christmas. Amaryllis is a flower that's usually gifted for Christmas while roses…” His voice trailed off and he shrugged and gulped down his tea.
“Yes?” She wondered her arms crossed over her chest.
“Well, roses imply a certain…expectation.”
“Do they?”
“In my humble experience.” Boy, he was digging himself into a hole. Her amusement was obvious and he quickly tore his reading glasses from his nose.
“Where's my list?” He asked, busily patting his jacket pocket.
“By the phone, where it lives.”
“Yes, I see, where else…” He rose and determined to leave this embarrassing moment behind he fled the kitchen. He found the list and was almost disappointed when he saw only two names on it.
With a sigh he turned around and startled when he found she was standing right in front of him. Her blue eyes, sparkling and mischievous, were challenging him.
“Is there anything else, Mrs Hall?” He cleared his throat.
“No , just be careful. There's a lot of snow up in the Dales. We won't want you to get lost in a snow drift.”
“You know me, Mrs Hall. I'm always prepared.”
“Course, you are.”
She leaned in, a little too close, and placed a soft kiss on his cheek. Her scent reached his nose and bewitched him. His heart skipped a beat and he had to blink several times, unsure if he was dreaming.
“He brought the roses as a thank you gift from Mrs Pumphrey,” she said nonchalantly as she straightened his tie.
“I knew that.”
She gently patted his collar and smiled tenderly at him. “I’ll see you for lunch.”
“Well, yes, of course, you will.” Rooted in his spot he waited until she had vanished around the corner, before he dared to move. He felt hot and cold while his brain tried to understand what had just happened to him. Her kiss… Her telling him the flowers were a present from Mrs Pumphrey. Did she think he was jealous about a boy like Carmody?
Ridiculous!

Really looking forward to Audrey Hall no longer having the excuse of, "But I'm a married woman!" to keep her from having some fun. Of course, she may have the "but you're my employer! what would people say?" excuse but I think Siegfried's reply would be "so bloody what!?" "Ridiculous Creature". Now kiss! No vows. No ring. She's free! And I have a feeling that a determined Siegfried Farnon would be a lot harder to put off than Gerald Hammond.

A while back I said I wanted to have a go at crossing over ACGAS and Eternal Law. Not a clue if anybody actually wants to read it or not, but if you do the first chapter is up. I’ve tried to give a bit of a breakdown of Eternal Law in the notes for anybody who hasn’t seen it.

1980s Horror Film Character Names
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

This is not to say that MacCulloch whitewashes Cranmer. Where the facts do not fit the man of principle image he is quick to say so. The origins of Cranmer’s prelacy he describes as morally tainted because of the manoeuvre by which Cranmer first swore an oath of primary loyalty to the Pope and then followed it with an oath of primary loyalty to the King. ‘In a procedure which can reflect no credit on him at all, Cranmer had formally benefited from Papal bulls while equally formally rejecting their authority.’ Or, to take an example from the triumphant years under Edward, MacCulloch refuses to agree with Cranmer’s ‘tender-hearted admirers’ that he should not bear primary responsibility for the burning of Joan of Kent. Rather the opposite, it is clear that he ‘bullied a reluctant Edward VI into signing Joan’s death warrant’.
Close Shaves, Gerald Hammond (Review of Thomas Cranmer: A Life,
by Diarmaid MacCulloch)
