PRAYING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT (WHAT IT MEANS)
When we come to Jude 1: 20, which reads; But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. My emphasis is on the last part of the verse “praying in the Holy Ghost” according to the King James Version (KJV). While some other versions like ESV English Standard Version and reads as ‘Holy Spirit’. Whether it is ‘in the Holy Ghost’ or the ‘Holy Spirit’ what…

How To Bring Your Study Bible With You On Vacation
Tumblr media
Jess and I will be on vacation later this week, and the great thing about current technology is that I do not need to leave my study Bible at home.
There’s An App For That
I use the ESV Bible app, and within the app you can download the ESV Global Study Bible for free. Since I have my own physical ESV Study Bible, it is also available to me on the app.
Reading Plans And Study Notes
I’ve been using the Gospel Transformation Bible reading plan, and it’s easy to use because I just click on the icon and the Bible reading for the day is immediately available. All study notes, maps, and charts are readily available. I can even quickly copy and paste the text for later reference.
Loving Both Physical And Digital Bibles
I don’t take my physical Bible for granted. Literal blood, sweat, and tears were spent to make it. So it is with great appreciation and gratitude that I use the Bible in the digital age. I talked about this app before, and I still highly recommend it.

The Function of Biblical Revelation
The Function of Biblical Revelation
What is Biblical Revelation? Why is it important for a Christian to know this information? That is the purpose of this study. Biblical revelation will be discussed and analyzed and we’ll discuss 3 different functions of biblical revelation.
The first function of biblical revelation is “to reveal God to human beings. God takes the first step by revealing himself so that people can find and know him” (Suwandoko and Duncan 1981, 22). God is gracious to show Himself to people who seek Him. If a father plays hide and seek with his son and the father continues to call out his sons name throughout the game, it is easier for the son to find the father. God is calling out your name today, and He gives you the Bible to reveal Himself in greater ways.
The second function of biblical revelation is to uncover truth that people didn’t understand before. “We may know something about God from His creation or through our reason, but only through biblical revelation can we know God Himself” (Suwandoko and Duncan 1981, 23). When non-believers come to faith in Jesus, they need the truth uncovered about Christ so that they can grow in they relationship with God. God reveals Himself through the Bible so that people can understand the truth of who He is. Psalm 119:130 “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (ESV).
The third function of biblical revelation is to provide fellowship. “If two people remain separated and unknown to each other there is no communication or fellowship between them” (Suwandoko and Duncan 1981, 24). God wants to provide fellowship with His children because each of us are very important to Him. After all, we were all created in God’s image, so we have already been special to God since He began mankind. Gen 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” God loved man enough to be created in His image and He wants relationship with us. He made it possible through the reading of the Bible.
The function of biblical revelation is to reveal God to human beings, to uncover truth that they didn’t know before, and to provide fellowship with Him. God loves us so much that He desired to make it easy for people to come to know Him. People must simply search the Bible to come to a closer relationship with their Father in Heaven.

What Is the Sin of Fornication?
Bible / Bible Study / Topical Studies / What Is the Sin of Fornication?

From time to time, there are many things that we wish the Bible spoke more explicitly about than it does. For example, with baptism should we immerse or sprinkle, can women be elders, where did Cain’s wife come from, do all dogs go to heaven, and so forth? Despite the fact that some passages leave a little more room for interpretation than most of us are comfortable with, there are countless other areas where the Bible leaves no ambiguity at all. What fornication is and what God thinks about it are issues in which there can be no doubt where the Bible stands.
Paul wasted no words when he said, “Consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion and evil desire and greed which amounts to idolatry” (Colossians 3:5), and the Hebrew author warned, “Marriage is to be held in honor among all and the marriage bed is to be undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4). These words mean little in our present culture where values are rooted in cultural norms and change like a shifting wind.
But for those of us who hold to the authority of Scripture, there is a different standard as to how to discern between what is acceptable and good, and what is to be condemned and avoided. The Apostle Paul warned the Roman church to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Paul understood that the world’s system, which we now live in as we await the consummation of Christ’s kingdom, has its own values that are constantly seeking to “conform” everything and everyone into its own image, ironically, the very thing that God has been doing from the beginning of time (Romans 8:29). And there is no area where this cultural conformity is more graphically seen than as it relates to matters of sexuality.
What Do Christians Need to Know about Fornication?
The Bible is not silent on issues of sexual ethics, and it does not leave us to ourselves to figure out what sexual purity looks like. The Corinthian church had a reputation, but not one that you would want your church to have. Paul wrote and said, “It is reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such kind as does not exist even among that Gentiles (1 Corinthians 5:1). The Greek word which is used here – and over 20 more times throughout the New Testament – for immorality is the word πορνεία (porneia). Our English word pornography derives from porneia.
During the fourth century, the Greek text of the Bible was translated into Latin in a work we call the Vulgate. In the Vulgate, the Greek word, porneia, was translated to the Latin word, fornicati, which is where we get the word fornication. The word, fornication, is found in the King James Bible, but modern, more accurate translations, like the NASB and ESV, opt to simply translate it to immorality.
What Does Fornication Include?
Many Bible scholars teach that fornication is limited to premarital sexual interaction, but there is nothing in the original language or otherwise that truly suggests such a narrow view. This is likely the reason that modern translators chose to translate porneia as immorality, in most cases because of its broader reach and implications. The Bible doesn’t go out of its way to categorize particular sins under the heading of fornication, and neither should we.
I believe it is safe to surmise that porneia refers to any and all sexual activity that happens outside the context of God’s design of marriage including, but not restricted to, pornography, extramarital sexual intercourse, or any other sexual activity that does not honor Christ. The Apostle warned the Ephesians that “immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper for the saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks” (Ephesians 5:3-4). This snapshot provides an image for us that broadens the meaning to include even how we speak to one another.
I am compelled to qualify as well that this does not assume that all sexual activity within marriage is Christ-honoring. I am aware that much abuse takes place within the framework of marriage, and there is no question that God’s judgment will not be spared simply because a perpetrator sins against their spouse.

What Damage Can Fornication Do?
It is very sobering that the God who loves marriage and “hates divorce” (Malachi 2:16), in fact, provides one allowance for a covenant marriage to end in divorce. Jesus says that anyone who divorces for any reason “except for the reason of unchastity” (Matthew 5:32 NASB) commits adultery, and if a person marries someone who has been divorced for any other reason other than unchastity also commits adultery.
You’ve probably already guessed it, but the word unchastity in the Greek is the very word we’ve already identified as porneias. These are strong words that cut against the grain of our cultural views of marriage and divorce, but they are God’s words.
The sin of sexual immorality (fornication) has the potential to destroy the very relationship which God created to reflect his love for his bride, the church. Paul instructed husbands to “love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Don’t get me wrong, there are many things that can strike a death blow to a marriage, but it seems that sexual sins are especially heinous and destructive, and often inflict such deep wounds and hurt and ultimately break covenant in ways that seldom can be repaired.
To the Corinthian church, Paul offers this chilling warning, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ. . . or do you no know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For he says, ‘The two shall become one flesh’” (1 Corinthian 6:15-16). Again, the sin of immorality (fornication) is much broader than prostitution alone, but the principle we find here can be applied to all areas of sexual immorality. My body is not my own. As a follower of Christ, I have become part of his own body (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). When I sin sexually, it is as though I am dragging Christ and his own body into participating with me in this sin.
Fornication also seems to have a way of taking our affections and thoughts hostage in such a formidable way that some people never break the chains of their bondage. The writer of Hebrews wrote about the “sin that so easily entangles us” (Hebrews 12:1). This seems to be exactly what Paul had in mind when he wrote to the Ephesian believers that they “walk no longer as the Gentiles also walk in the futility of their mind being darkened in their understanding. . . having become callous having given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity” (Ephesians 4:17-19). Sexual sin creeps into our minds and takes us captive in ways that we often fail to discern until it’s too late.
Sexual sin can be a very private sin, but the seed planted in secret also bears destructive fruit, publically wreaking havoc in marriages, churches, vocations, and ultimately robbing believers of the joy and freedom of intimacy with Christ. All sexual sin is a counterfeit intimacy designed by the father of lies to take the place of our first love, Jesus Christ.
How Can We Overcome the Sin of Fornication?
So how does one battle and win in this area of sexual sin?
1. Acknowledge that it is God’s will for his people to live pure and holy lives and that he condemns sexual immorality of every kind (Ephesians 5; 1 Corinthians 5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3).
2. Confess (Agree with God) your sin to God (1 John 1:9-10).
3. Confess and confide in trusted elders as well (James 5:16).
4. Seek to retrain your mind by filling it with Scripture and actively engaging in the very thoughts of God himself (Colossians 3:1-3, 16).
5. Realize that Christ, alone, is the one who can free us from the bondage that the flesh, the devil, and the world have engineered with our fall in mind (Hebrews 12:2).
Even as I pen my thoughts, I realize that for the one bleeding and gasping for one more breath on the battlefield, these words may come across as hollow and quite detached from the horrors of the real-life struggles for holiness. Nothing could be farther from my intent. My words are not intended to be a checklist or an easy fix. I have simply sought to offer God’s truth in a world of lies and the prayer that God would free us all from the chains that bind us so that we may love him more.

The Danger of Bible Translation
By Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg - May 10, 2019
One of the most confusing things for believers today is the sheer abundance of Bible translations. One simply does not know which version to believe. In my own interactions with countless Christians, I am often asked: “If I want to read the most faithful translation of the original manuscripts, which translation should I chose?”
My common answer is that no translation is perfect. It is frankly impossible to fully and perfectly reflect the exact nature of the original text, no matter what translation method was used by the scholar or team of scholars, no matter how competent they are as translators. Regardless of how disheartening this may sound to the ears of modern Christians, we must not evaluate translations in terms of perfect vs. imperfect (all translations are, in fact, imperfect), but rather in terms of “less accurate” vs. “more accurate”. This is one of the reasons why you, a serious Bible-believing Christian, must stop delegating your own responsibility for the study of Hebrew to the “priestly” elite class within the global church (the biblical scholars). Instead you too must take responsibility and be a part of the coalition of the willing who examines and double-checks all official translations.
Essentially, there are only two types of English translations available today – the King James Bible and all others. No doubt my previous sentence is bound to create a storm of angry responses for lumping together such diverse translations as the New International Version (NIV) with the New American Standard Bible (NASB) or the New Living Translation (NLT) with the English Standard Version (ESV). Even at the risk of provoking your righteous wrath, I maintain that this categorization of English translations is accurate. Let me explain.
Whatever the faults of the KJV, there has never been another Bible translation that approached its literary beauty and grandeur. The KJV translation of the Bible is as colorful as the personalities that put it together (you should one day listen to God’s Secretaries: The Makings of the King James Bible by Adam Nicholson). Prof. Robert Alter (interacting with another scholar) has succinctly stated that the King James Bible, “remains the closest approach for English readers to the original – despite its frequent and embarrassing inaccuracies, despite its anachronisms, and despite its insistent substitution of modern English tonalities and rhythms for biblical ones.” I encourage you to read Robert Alter’s own “Hebrew Bible” translation in three volumes, where he attempts uniquely (and to my mind very successfully) to remedy many shortcomings of both the King James Version and other modern translations.
One major improvement is that Alter’s translation does not sacrifice the physicality and concreteness of the original Biblical Hebrew (as all modern translations do) in favor of modern demands for dry informational clarity which essentially obliterate the music behind the text of the Hebrew original.
In retaining those elements of the original Hebrew, his translation makes a tremendous leap forward in revealing the poetry, rhythm, tone, and therefore, the original meaning of the Ancient Hebrew text shared by Christian and Jewish communities for centuries.
We had the privilege of conducting an exclusive interview with Prof. Robert Alter as part of our guest scholar talks series. You can review our Hebrew Bible collection mini-courses here.

Choosing to Trust
Choosing to Trust Matthew 1:16-24 English Standard Version (ESV) “16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. The Birth of Jesus Christ 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed[b] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife into his home.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- Joseph was a man of faith and compassion. Our story tells us of his anger, he first thought of divorcing her, but God in his own way, asked Joseph to trust him, and marry Mary. My guess is that Joseph had his doubts, but he trusted that inner voice, and embraced Mary, and Jesus. I had two dad's. One was my biological dead, Duncan, whom I like who signed over the papers to my mother granting my adopted dad Wade his new son. My adopted dad had a business, and Duncan understood he was giving me a good life. Both dad's gave me a great gift, Duncan life, and a chance for a good life. Wade loved me, and gave me two gifts--to love people, to give from the bottom of your heart without expectation of anything in return, to put your life on the line for another, he gave me compassion and love for others. When he died instructions were given that all of his bills for credit to people be destroyed. These bills came from mostly black, poor people, whom he gave credit to so they could eat. Many were year's old. People would pay $20.00 down or less, all they had, and buy $100.00 on credit at the same time. No one who came to him ever went hungry. Those bills were destroyed. Secondly Wade gave his son faith in God, in Jesus. There have been times on a train, or bus, I pull out my Bible, and at one time, would look around to see what people were thinking, but Wade read his Bible in public, and began every morning at 5:00 a.m. with prayer and Bible study. He introduced me to the living Jesus. I will be forever grateful both my dad's. Jesus had two dad's the first gave him to Joseph to nurture, to care for, and then Jesus returned to him in glory. At the heart of both these instances was love, and Fr. Richard Rhor reminds us that: Love Alone Overcomes Fear Thursday, March 19, 2020 Fr. Richard Rhor "It is shocking to think how much the world has changed in such a brief time. Each of us has had our lives and communities disrupted. Of course, I am here in this with you. I feel that I’m in no position to tell you how to feel or how to think, but there are a few things that come to mind I will share. A few days ago I was encouraged by the Franciscans and by the leadership team here at the CAC to self-quarantine, so I’ve been in my little hermitage now for three or four days. I’ve had years of practice, literally, how to do what we are calling “social distancing.” I have a nice, large yard behind me where there are four huge, beautiful cottonwood trees, and so I walk my dog Opie every few hours. Right now I’m trying to take in psychologically, spiritually, and personally, what is God trying to say? When I use that phrase, I’m not saying that God causes suffering to teach us good things. But God does use everything, and if God wanted us to experience global solidarity, I can’t think of a better way. We all have access to this suffering, and it bypasses race, gender, religion, and nation. We are in the midst of a highly teachable moment. There’s no doubt that this period will be referred to for the rest of our lifetimes. We have a chance to go deep, and to go broad. Globally, we’re in this together. Depth is being forced on us by great suffering, which as I like to say, always leads to great love. But for God to reach us, we have to allow suffering to wound us. Now is no time for an academic solidarity with the world. Real solidarity needs to be felt and suffered. That’s the real meaning of the word “suffer” – to allow someone else’s pain to influence us in a real way. We need to move beyond our own personal feelings and take in the whole. This, I must say, is one of the gifts of television: we can turn it on and see how people in countries other than our own are hurting. What is going to happen to those living in isolated places or for those who don’t have health care? Imagine the fragility of the most marginalized, of people in prisons, the homeless, or even the people performing necessary services, such as ambulance drivers, nurses, and doctors, risking their lives to keep society together? Our feelings of urgency and devastation are not exaggeration: they are responding to the real human situation. We’re not pushing the panic button; we are the panic button. And we have to allow these feelings, and invite God’s presence to hold and sustain us in a time of collective prayer and lament. I hope this experience will force our attention outwards to the suffering of the most vulnerable. Love always means going beyond yourself to otherness. It takes two. There has to be the lover and the beloved. We must be stretched to an encounter with otherness, and only then do we know it’s love. This is what we call the subject-subject relationship. Love alone overcomes fear and is the true foundation that lasts (1 Corinthians 13:13). Gateway to Action & Contemplation: What word or phrase resonates with or challenges me? What sensations do I notice in my body? What is mine to do? Prayer for Our Community: O Great Love, thank you for living and loving in us and through us. May all that we do flow from our deep connection with you and all beings. Help us become a community that vulnerably shares each other’s burdens and the weight of glory. Listen to our hearts’ longings for the healing of our world. [Please add your own intentions.] . . . Knowing you are hearing us better than we are speaking, we offer these prayers in all the holy names of God, amen." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Father River Damien Sims, sfw, D.Min., D.S.T. Episode 290 04182019 🍞 How to prepare for Passover (Christian) | Bedikat Chametz | Search for Leaven
Today on #CrackYourBible’s apologetics / Bible study, we’re talking about how Christians can celebrate Passover with their kids without relying on the mountain of rules from the Talmud or anything coming out of the Hebrew Roots movement. When you go by scripture alone, the holiday is prophetic and exciting – not a burden of an ever growing list of laws to follow.
