Peterhoff Palace Complex
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photographs: Different views of Peterhof, which, rather than one specific place, is an astoundingly beautiful complex of palaces, gardens, pavilions, and fountains. The photos here and the text are a mere preview of a fraction of the place in all its grandeur.
The Grand Palace, Lower and Upper Gardens and Fountains
The Peterhoff Palace (which comes from the Dutch "Pieterhof," meaning "Pieter's Court") is a complex of palaces, gardens, pavilions, and fountains located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great in response to Louis XIV Palace of Versailles in France.
Peter the Great began constructing his new capital, St. Petersburg, in 1703 after successfully adding Swedish provinces to Russian territory.  Saint Petersburg allowed Russian access to the Baltic Sea through the Neva River that flowed to the Gulf of Finland.
Throughout the early 18th century, Peter the Great built and expanded the Peterhof Palace complex. Based on his sketches, he constructed the Monplaisir Palace (French: "my delight"). This would be Peter's summer retreat that he would use on his way coming and going from Europe. Later, he expanded his plans to include a group of palaces and gardens further inland, on the model of Versailles.
Most of the Peterhoff land is comprised of what is called the "Lower Gardens." In the middle of the lower gardens is the Grand Palace. The area behind this palace is the "Upper Gardens" and is comparatively smaller. The Grand Palace is not the only historic royal building in Peterhoff. The palaces of Monplaisir and Marli, as well as the pavilion known as the 'Hermitage,' were all raised during the initial construction of Peterhoff during the reign of Peter the Great.
There are a number of cascades and fountains through the grounds, which have various symbolic meanings and are in themselves great technological achievements. The greatest of these is that all of the fountains in Peterhoff operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The elevation difference creates the pressure that drives most of the fountains of the Lower Gardens.

Gothic Chapel in Peterhof:  An Orthodox church in the name of Saint Alexander Nevsky situated in the Alexandria Park; Nicholas I ordered its construction to complement the Cottage Palace
Alexandria Park, the Cottage Palace, and the Farmers Palace
To the east of the main park at Peterhof lies an expanse of landscaped parkland in the English style, named after Alexandra Fedorovna, wife of Nicholas I. The land was used as a royal hunting ground for most of the 18th century and left to go wild after the court moved to Tsarskoe Selo.
In 1825, the land was passed to Nicholas I, who commissioned a Scottish architect and landscape gardener to create an English-style estate with a "cottage" palace and home farm. This was partly a concession to Alexandra (nee Charlotte of Prussia), who found the pomp and grandeur of court life oppressive. Alexandra loved the cottage. The Cottage Palace was completed in 1829 and became the permanent summer residence of the Tsar's family. Alexandria Park is one of the best-landscaped parks on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
The building is equal parts seaside villa, Gothic castle, and English farmhouse, but extremely elegant, with several charming decorative details. The palace's interiors exemplify the private tastes of Nicholas and Alexandra and their children and grandchildren. The spectacular trompe l'oeil murals around the staircase, depicting gothic arches and vaults, and Nicholas's Naval Study, with superb views over the Gulf of Finland, are particularly impressive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Farm Palace was initially a pavilion in Alexandria Park close to the Cottage Palace and Gothic Chapel. Meant to be a pastoral farm with a row of household buildings, it was later expanded into a summer residence for the family of Tsesarevich Alexander Alexandrovich of Russia. The palace became the favorite summer residence of Alexander II and his family. After many reconstructions, the house was named "The Farm Palace" in 1859. It would eventually be a favorite of Alexander III and Nicholas II.

The Lower Dacha at Peterhoff (badly damaged in World War II and destroyed in the 1960s) - in the process of reconstruction
The Lower Dacha was in Alexandria Park, part of the Peterhof complex created by Tsar Peter I in the early 18th century as an Imperial summer residence. The palace was the home of Tsar Nicholas II while in residence at Peterhof (it was built for him), and several of his children were born there. It was badly damaged during the Second World War and was destroyed in the 1960s. The Lower Dacha is in the process of being restored. It is expected that the restoration will be completed by 2025. The picture below where the intact building can be seen, is from the early twentieth century. Photographs of the ruins have been included as well.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
October 9th - Sasquatch
Walter Langkowski had been a talented athlete and gifted academic who earned educational degrees from Pennsylvania State and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology whilst also having a brief yet successful career as a professional football player for the Green Bay Packers.  Walter accepted a professorship at McGill University where he focused his research on gamma radiation and the circumstances that caused Bruce Banner to be transformed into The Incredible Hulk.  Having achieved a breakthrough, Walter relocated to a special base near the arctic circle where he conducted an experiment that he believed would bestow him hulk-like powers without effecting his mind.
This experiment did not go as expected.  The gamma radiation caused a spatial rift that opened up to an extra-dimensional world known as The Realm of The Beasts.  The brief connection between dimensions led to Walter becoming bonded with the beastly entity called Tanaraq.  As such, Walter was transformed into a giant, orange-furred monster.  Overwhelmed by primitive instinct, Walter ran amok until he was happened upon by the mystical heroine known as Snowbird.  With the aide of Snowbird and the sorcerer called Shaman, Walter was helped to control his now found powers, to transform back into his human form and maintain his original intellect whist in his monstrous form.
Walter would go on to utilize his new powers as a member of the Canadian superhero team, Alpha Flight.  Herein he chose the name Sasquatch as his super hero alias.  He would go on to have numerous adventures alongside Alpha Flight.  All the while, the spirit of Tanaraq began to exert a greater and greater influence over him.  Eventually, Tanaraq’s savage nature took him over and The Sasquatch became a mindless beast.  Sensing Tanaraq’s evil spirit, Snowbird acted on impulse, transformed into a stronger version of the sasquatch and killed Walter, ripping out the creature’s heart.
Alpha Flight then traveled to the Realm of the Great Beasts to reclaim Walter’s spirit and hopefully resurrect their friend and ally.  The team partially succeeded and Walter’s mind was relocated into a series of new bodies, including a female version of himself named Wanda Langkowski.  Eventually, Walter was returned to his original body and resumed his career as a heroic member of Alpha Flight.
Walter perished once more following an adventure alongside the Hulk.  His body became the new host for the consciousness of Leonard ‘Doc’ Samson and, some time thereafter, Walter awoke now possessing Samsom body.  Now calling himself ‘Walter Samson’ he aided the Fantastic Four in locating the mystical Below-Place so they could use the Forever Gate to retrieve Bruce Banner.
Whether or not Walter and Doc Samson will be able to return to their respective original bodies remains to be seen.  Sasquatch first appeared int he pages of X-Men Vol. 1 #120 (1979).

CONFESSION:
I don’t feel that the Mage-Templar decision is as unbalanced as people say. Calpernia and Samsom are equally interesting characters in my eyes, Fiona and Ser Barris are great images of there causes. The lore you learn from both sides is very intriguing, meanwhile the companion introductions of Cole and Dorian are pretty neat in there own ways. There’s def a Mage bias but it’s not THAT bad.

(about the irreparable) Bethany looks like she commited multiple crimes against humanity (for some reason), Maggy looks like she forcing a smile, Samsom looks like he's going to commit a war crime, azazel, even as a angel is still a shitposter, appolyon looks traumatized and suffering from ptsd, Forgotten looks like hes is going to beat the shit out of someone and judas looks ...Kinder???, less of a dick???, as i expected, great job op
((im very happy you came to these conclusions!))
I!Beth is one of those christians that goes on missions to africa to try and get people to join the cult follow Christ. also one of those christians thats like "yeah i support same-sex marriage. BUT-" she really is a good person. just doing what her religion says breaks her heart.
I!Maggy is a fashion model because her mom forced her to be. she has always had to live out her mom's dreams, by winning pageants and staving off of caffeine pills and tissues soaked in water for days at a time. many think she's living a wonderful life being rich and famous, but is it really her life if her mom's the manager?
I!Sam can't really be a war criminal cause then his dad will beat him again its not good rep for the son of a drill sergeant.
I!Zaze has always been a shitposter even as an angel lol. he's a bit happier now that he wasn't the scapegoat. betraying his bestfriend paid off in the end with a sick whip.
I!Apollyon -well, Abaddon he's called since he's still an angel- isn't really traumatized. more like staring at the abyss for too long and losing whatever humanity angels like him have. and losing his friends too, for that matter.
I!Forgotten isn't as fleshed out (lol) as some of the others. im kinda playing off the idea of souls being unable to rest if they weren't buried properly. hes gonna kill his mom for making him a shitty grave.
I!Judas is definitely nicer but also one minor inconvenience away from slitting his wrists. uhhh he has hair cause he never lost it through a pact. his parents are strict and forced him into christianity. that's all i got for him.
((UM um um thank you im glad i could communicate what i wanted with these designs 🥺🥺🥺))

FIC PROMPT: my boys eichart with something fluffy. i dont care what. domestic shit. something happy 💞
u do love challenging me dont u meg. fluff? idk her.  i still have the last prompt u sent me sitting and marinating in my drafts. anyway. enjoy a horribly written ficlet.
12:30 am is pretty much the same everywhere –that muted sort of feeling that sleep should be coming soon but it’s not. And Jack is starving. And feeling too lazy to pull anything together that requires more than two steps and thirty seconds. So he dumps some Cheerios into a bowl and searches the fridge for milk. It doesn’t take long given its barren state, only when he retrieves the jug from its shelf there’s not even enough sloshing around the bottom to dampen his Cheerios. Which like, dry Cheerios –not cool.
“Sam,” He yells, “where’s the fucking milk?”
In the living room, Sam shifts on the couch, craning his neck to get a good look at the kitchen. “In your hand?” He says unconvincingly.
Jack rolls his eyes and moves from the counter to a better line of sight, all the better to direct his looked of unamused, disapproval. He holds the offending jug up. “There’s literally like, half a teaspoon left in here. It was your turn to get the groceries this week –you had one job.”
“Two.” Which is a shitty and lame excuse, by the way.
“Oh, so you can pick up your protein bars but not some fucking whole milk? What am I supposed to do with my Cheerios now?” And like, he’s not really that upset over the whole not having milk situation, it’s more –he just likes it sometimes, the banter, the pushing.
Sam stares back at him, unimpressed. “Wegmans is open right now –go buy your own milk if you want cereal so bad.”
And uh –hell no, Samsom. “Samson, if you think you’re getting out of this you’re fucking wrong.”
“I’m not going with you.”
“Yes you are.”
“Jack– do you really want to go out just for milk right now?”
“Yes.” He says, more to be difficult than anything else.
Sam regards him for a long moment before he shuts his laptop with a sharp click and exasperated sigh. “Fine.”
Jack blinks, caught slightly by surprise, but recovers quickly, giving Sam a slash of a grin, “Great –I’ll drive.”
The drive is a relatively quiet one, peaceful like the lack of cars on the road, and Jack’s gaze slides occasionally to the panes of Sam’s face, illuminated in the glow of passing street and traffic lights.
“I can’t believe you want milk this badly.” Sam mutters as they wait at a red light, there’re no cars in sight and Jack’s tempted to run it. But instead, he turns to look at Sam with his pulled up hoodie and expression that doesn’t quite match his exasperated tone. It’s —gentle. But maybe that’s just the glow of the red light. There’s a feeling though, and Jack’s no stranger to it even if he hasn’t felt it in a long time.
He swallows, looks away. Sam seems not to notice, fingers idly tapping against the door.
The light turns green and Jack guns the car, as if he can leave the funny warmth in his stomach at the intersection.
Wegmans at 1 am is a surprisingly peaceful experience: no carts clattering loudly over tile, no screaming kids and tired moms. It’s the feeling of ice rinks after the lights have gone out, of quiet bedrooms and a redeye out of Buffalo with Sam curled up on the seat next to him.
Sam follows him like a quiet shadow, only speaking in quiet suggestions and pointed fingers drawn from the depths of his hoodie pocket. He catches Sam looking sometimes, fleeting moments he can’t quite catch besides out of the corner of his eye.
They end up with a lot more than milk –sushi and pasta and eggs and unbuttered popcorn that tastes like nothing all loaded into the single open checkout. The cashier shows no visible sign of recognizing them –either doesn’t know or doesn’t care –either way, Jack’s vaguely relieved. Exhaustion is finally settling in now, and he blankly watches her scan their objects one by one.
He almost doesn’t notice that beside him Sam is edging closer. Doesn’t really until he’s resting his head on his shoulder and Jack lets him. He has the urge to wrap an arm around him –Jack resists it.
“$15.62.” says the cashier without missing a beat, and Jack fishes a twenty out of his wallet with as little movement as possible.
“Thanks.” He says, gathers their bags and tugs Sam out by his arm.
It’s closer to 1:30 by the time they get back. Jack listens to Sam’s breath even out into sleep over the soft purr of the car engine, stares more obviously when they’re stopped at the red lights.
“Sam.” Jack says when he’s parked back in their garage, silence pressing around them as he shuts off the engine. It sounds loud in the absence of all sound, but Sam doesn’t stir. And Jack can feel himself staring again, noticing too much in the muted light –the way Sam looks younger in the way people do when sleep erases years, the way there’s a strand of hair falling across his face and Jack doesn’t realize he’s reaching out to brush it away until he is.
Sam stirs under featherlight touch and Jack snatches his hand back.
“Samson,” he says, firm. “Wake up. We’re home.” Sam mumbles something incoherent and Jack opens his door and climbs out, tossing “Grab the milk, will ya?” over his shoulder for good measure.
“Fuck —grab your own milk, Jack.”
this flash fic has been brought to youentirely  by my love of Wegmans at 1 am. I hope u enjoyed.
also  hmmm… now reflecting on this. it’s more… content than happy. but like. that’s cool right??? i love the feeling of contentness. it matching the liminal feeling of Wegmans at 1 am.

The 14 most incredible moments from the best NFL game EVER
Tumblr media
The Monday night showdown between the Rams and the Chiefs might just have been the best NFL game of all time.
The Rams beat the Chiefs 54-51 in what turned out to be arguably the best NFL game ever played. The 105 points scored between the two teams was the third-highest output in the history of the NFL. The Rams moved to 10-1 on the season and control their own destinies as they cruise toward a first-round bye in the playoffs.
It was a barnburner from start to finish and no one from the players to the coaches to the fans was able to take a breath during the game.
Here are the best moments from the explosive Monday Night Football matchup.
1. Tyreek Hill hit the burners for an early touchdown
How do you guard this? Hill is a nightmare in man coverage — very few players can match his speed over the top ... or anywhere else on the field.
Tyreek Hill is unfair pic.twitter.com/Mhd08Be859
— Sam Monson (@PFF_Sam) November 20, 2018
This got the Chiefs on the board in the first quarter after 13 straight points by the Rams.
2. Yes, Aaron Donald turned into a superhero. Again.
Right at the two-minute warning, the Chiefs were reminded about the otherworldly talent that is known as Aaron Donald.
Aaron Donald will wreck you pic.twitter.com/ZJgOJ1neHN
— Ben Baldwin (@benbbaldwin) November 20, 2018
Donald whipped around Cam Erving and got his first strip sack of the game. Samsom Ebukam picked up the fumble recovery and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to put the Rams in front 23-17.
3. Aaron Donald got another strip sack! He’s pretty good
Donald got his second strip sack of the game on the Chiefs’ first possession of the second half. Donald destroyed Chiefs’ offensive lineman Cam Erving and knocked the ball out of Patrick Mahomes’ hands.
You can’t stop Aaron Donald. You can only hope to contain him (which the Chiefs are bad at) pic.twitter.com/xotrWOtGvT
— Cameron DaSilva (@camdasilva) November 20, 2018
The fumble was recovered by John Franklin-Myers and the Rams roared down the field on offense for a 7-yard Jared Goff touchdown run.
4. Josh Reynolds scored his third touchdown of the season on a catch in the corner of the end zone
Josh Reynolds got the nod as the Rams’ third receiver with Cooper Kupp out for the season and chipped in early with great one-handed catch in the back of the end zone. This gave the Rams a 13-0 lead early in the game.

— Ty Wurth (@WurthDraft) November 20, 2018
5. Andy Reid yelled at Jared Goff on the sideline
It’s unclear exactly what was said, but Andy Reid yelled at Rams quarterback on the sideline while Reid was discussing a challenge with the referees.

— Will Brinson (@WillBrinson) November 20, 2018
6. Samson Ebukam scored two defensive touchdowns
Samson Ebukam got his first touchdown on Aaron Donald’s first strip sack of the game and scored his second touchdown on a pick-six.

— Sports Daily (@SportsDGI) November 20, 2018
Ebukam bowled over Patrick Mahomes at the goal line and ended up putting the Rams in front 40-30.
Who is Samson Ebukam? We’re glad you asked.
7. Patrick Mahomes found a wide open Tyreek Hill with the flick of a wrist
Patrick Mahomes might have one of the strongest arms to ever play the game and he showed it off on a 73-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill to start off the fourth quarter.
.@cheetah GONE ‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/stNvJyFMAu
— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) November 20, 2018
The Chiefs desperately needed that touchdown to cut the score from 40-30 to 40-37. Then, they were able to go ahead with a ridiculous play from Allen Bailey.
8. Justin Houston and Allen Bailey teamed up to give the Chiefs the lead
The Chiefs defense got a score when they had the Rams pinned close to their own end zone. Justin Houston beat Andrew Whitworth around the edge for a strip sack and Allen Bailey caught the ball in midair before trotting into the end zone for 6.

— Def Pen Sports (@DefPenSports) November 20, 2018
9. Robert Woods dove to bring in a 36-yard pass
This play set up a short touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Gerald Everett. The deep pass from Jared Goff was a little short, but Woods rallied back to the ball to put the Rams in the red zone.

— NYSportsCast (@NYSportCast) November 20, 2018
10. Patrick Mahomes found Chris Conley to get the Chiefs past FIFTY points
A questionable penalty on the Rams set up the Chiefs with a fresh set of downs in the red zone, and it didn’t take Mahomes long to capitalize with his sixth touchdown pass of the night.
pic.twitter.com/lzjwzNofZw
— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) November 20, 2018
11. Jared Goff answered with a touchdown throw to Gerald Everett with under 2 minutes left
You didn’t think the Chiefs’ four-point lead was safe, right? Goff found his tight end Gerald Everett down the right sideline to take the lead back.
An absolute dime from Jared Goff and great job by Gerald Everett keeping his feet in bounds. Wow. Just wow. #KCvsLA pic.twitter.com/0MqimJkZU0
— Russell Brown (@RussNFLDraft) November 20, 2018
12. Patrick Mahomes answered by driving the Chiefs near midfield ... and then throwing a pick
Ebukam came up big again, forcing Mahomes to throw a wobbler downfield that turned a potential game-winning drive into a Rams possession.
THIS GAME! @marcuspeters pic.twitter.com/75eaqaBCGV
— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) November 20, 2018
And the man ending the Chiefs’ budding drive? Who else but Marcus Peters?
You can’t even script an ending like this. Peters, who had a rocky start to his NFL career with the Chiefs, was traded to the Rams this offseason. Let’s be charitable and say he’s been an enigma this season. The former All-Pro and fourth-year corner gave up 211 yards to Michael Thomas in the Rams’ Week 9 loss to the Saints.
Then in one of the biggest moments of the game, Peters came up with just his second pick all season.
13. With possession, the lead, and 1:18 to play, the Rams ... threw the ball twice.
Sean McVay didn’t take his foot off the gas, dialing up short passes on first and second down in an effort to seal the game. But while a completion on first down forced Andy Reid to burn his first timeout of the half, a second-down breakup meant the Rams were going to get the ball back late in the fourth quarter with a timeout to burn on a potential game-winning drive.
Fortunately, Johnny Hekker would bail his team out with a 68-yard punt that pinned Tyreek Hill 2 yards deep in his own end zone before a 14-yard return.
14. But one last Mahomes interception sealed this one
The Chiefs’ desperation drive started at their own 12-yard line with 50 seconds left on the clock. It effectively ended when LaMarcus Joyner picked off a deep ball intended for Tyreek Hill at the Los Angeles 28. Mahomes’ final line says he had five turnovers, but somehow it feels like he simultaneously had more and fewer in a Herculean effort.

But i do want to use that one again, and all i need is a new heater and some new decor :3 so probably looking at $20 to get that ready again? Nice!! Also update on mood: not great tbh!!! Anxiety really high, depressive mood is here again. Im getting paid today so that should help fill the void!!!! 09/29/17

Long after the ANZAC commemorations had finished, when The World Games contestants were either celebrating their success or limping toward the nearest A&E, a largely unheralded gig took place at the KMC in Shortland Street. It was fitting, that on a day of remembrance the faithful old war horses, the standards, were honoured. It is surprisingly rare to see a standards only instrumental gig these days. The event was curated by Kevin Haines and what a treat it was. The definition of what makes a Jazz standard is a moveable feast, but the safest definition is that the tunes are, or were, from the standard repertoire. Most, but not all standards come from the Great American Songbook, e.g. Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Victor Young, Duke Ellington Ira & George Gershwin etc.  Many of them, and often the best, from failed musicals. Other Jazz standards come from the pen of gifted composers like Sonny Rollins. When introducing the band, Haines stated,” The ability to play the standards well, is the benchmark against which Jazz musicians are ultimately judged”. Assembled on the bandstand were some of New Zealand finest musicians. Kevin Haines (bass), Nathan Haines (tenor & soprano saxophones, vocal), Kevin Field (piano), Dixon Nacey (guitar), Ron Samsom (drums).  The band gave it everything and the exchanges were beautiful – Nacey and Field conjuring up the Evans/Hall duos, Nathan Haines making his tenor sound like the Desmond Alto. The night was well attended and it will certainly be remembered.
The set list on the night was magnificent, with several surprises nestled among the more famous standards: (1) Beautiful Love (tune composed in 1931 by King/Young/Alstyne – it was featured in two long forgotten movies during 1932) (2) Tarde (Milton Nascimento 1969 – immensely popular in Brazil but popularised in Jazz circles by Wayne Shorter). (3) Alone Together (Schwartz/Dietz 1932 – from the musical ‘Flying Colours’). (4) But Not For Me (tune George Gershwin, 1930, from the musical ‘Girl Crazy’). (5) impossible Beauty (Nathan Haines 2000 – a  New Zealand standard if ever there was one -from his album ‘Sound Travels’). (6) If I should lose You (tune by Rainger  1936 – used in the film ‘Rose of the Rancho’. (7) Stella by Starlight (tune by Victor Young 1944 used as the score in the film ‘The uninvited’ rated the 10th most popular standard in the world). (8) Detour Ahead (Herb Ellis, Johnny Frigo and probably Lou Carter, 1947 – a true Jazz Standard, famously played by BIll Evans on his Village Vanguard sessions and later, and closer to home by Vince Jones), (9) All The Things You Are (tune by Jerome Kern, 1939, written for the musical ‘Very Warm for May’ played frequently, sometimes parodied, often messed with, much-loved).
Thanks, Kevin.

WESLEY: No, I'm working late as well. It's fine. (laughs) Sorry to disappoint, Lilah, but I am not waiting at the door with a scowl and burnt pot roast. (laughs) Well, if your lot can have the world destroyed by midnight, we could still— (call waiting beeps) Dammit, hold on. (flashes phone) Price here. One minute. (to his guest) Can Emile put all that together for me? DELIVERY GUY: It's a pretty funky package. Wouldn't be cheap. WESLEY: I don't need it to be cheap. I need it to work. DELIVERY GUY: Yeah, I suppose. Yeah. WESLEY: (to phone) Go. (pauses) Yes, we'll bloody well take Angel's clients if he's out of town. Call me back with the details in twenty minutes. (flashes phone) Sorry, Lilah, midnight might not be— Uh-huh. Oh, you did? That is my favorite pair. Are you sitting at your desk? Take them off. (to guest) Why are you still here? (guest leaves, then to phone) No, not after your meeting. Now. Pretend you dropped your pencil. (sits down) Very good. Now...
