The Lords of the New Church were a British-American rock band. A supergroup, the line-up originally consisted of four musicians from 1970s punk bands. This line-up comprised vocalist Stiv Bators (ex-the Dead Boys), guitarist Brian James (ex-the Damned), bassist Dave Tregunna (ex-Sham 69) and drummer Nick Turner (ex-the Barracudas). Launched in 1981, the band released three studio albums prior to their dissolution in 1989. During this time, they underwent several line-up changes.

More melodic and slickly produced than most punk, their music both reached a broader audience than that of many bands in the genre and alienated hardcore punk fans. The band presented a stylized tribal identity around their appearance and their music that fans embraced: the writer Dave Thompson asserts this represented "the first time since the Sex Pistols' Bromley Contingent fanbase [that] a band had succeeded in grafting its own identity onto its audience without first paying obeisance to the gods of highstreet fashion. Their stage antics became notorious early in their career, with Bators stunts on one occasion reportedly resulting in his clinical death for several minutes.

Block Plan of the New building

The University of Glasgow was established in 1451 by Bishop Turnbull. It is the 4th oldest university in the English speaking world and the second oldest in Scotland after the university of StAndrews. The old college building fist started on the highstreet in 1457. In 1460 James Lord Hamilton donated an area of land on the high street to the faculty of Arts. In 1569 a further endowment was made by Mary queen of Scots. The university remained at this site until the 17th century when the new building work began in the area behind the highstreet and grew to replace the original building. The old college was named “one of the finest, and certainly the most extensive specimen of Scottish civil architecture of the seventeenth century “.

The site where the old college campus was located, was sold in 1863 to the city of Glasgow union railway company whos intention was to use the sit as a goods yard. The decision to demolish the site was seen as cultural vandalism however the university itself did not have the funds to require to renovate the college. The only way the university could gain funds was to sell the land they were in and move to a cheaper site. They decided to move the University to the more fashionable and less dirty, West End of Glasgow.

The new campus was to be built in Gillmore hill, due to its situation there was potential for further expansion. The new building was started in 1866 however it wasn’t until 1870 that the university took up residence. At the time of its development it was the second largest structure being built in the uk (the biggest being Houses of Parliament). The new building was designed by George Gilbert Scott in the Gothie revival style, it was then finished by his son Oldrid Scott, he completed The Bute Hall and finishing touches. Since then its been developed by many different architects.
