S1E1: The Competition Begins

okie dokie first ever episode of dance moms rewatch starts now :0 i actually remember watching this the very first time it aired on lifetime because i was channel surfing and saw a commercial for it earlier that day. that was the summer between 8th and 9th grade. ah memories... i didnt know what to expect because i did dance when i was a kid but not on a competition team and it was mostly ballet so i was pretty unfamiliar with this whole world.

anyway lets begin. this is probably gonna be a longer post than what i’ll end up writing for the other episodes in season 1 bc the first episode introduces so much info, just a heads up

Act 1: (aside: yes its insufferable to divide this into “acts” when its really just like “segments separated by commercial breaks” but thats how they’re called in actual tv scripts so im just going with that cuz i cant think of a better/easier way uwu)

god this is so fucking early 2010s lmao

i miss these days where they were just talented nobodies from pittsburgh on a low budget reality tv show that nobody even knew would be successful. and the bad hair and makeup but idk if that was also just a 2011 thing lol

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES GREEN SCREEN INTROS IM DYING

the chalkboard !!!! they werent doing the pyramid on the mirror yet

(apparently abby never did anything similar to the pyramid thing but the producers made her and it became a whole Thing on the show and thats why the moms were like wtf is this bullshit the first week)

mackenzie looks like a toddler. chloe is so tiny. theyre the 2 who changed the most physically over the course of the show

i remember watching this for the first time being used to ballet lyrical and jazz but never having done or really seen acro/gymnastics in dance choreo and being SO flabbergasted. i was thinking “a chin stand is not dancing what the actual hell” and yknow what? i was right

melissa: “my boyfriend knows how much i spend on dance because he signs the checks...............hermehhemrherrmehermh” (the most awkward laugh omg)

maddie is wearing a fucking bumpit in her hair i cannot

melissa deadass just said out loud “im here for my daughter im not here to make friends” ok everybody mark that one off on your catty women’s reality tv show bingo card!

camera man accidentally getting in the shot filming right in front of the huge wall-mirror.... what is this, amateur hour? i’ll let it slide since its the first day of filming rehearsal but step it up, boys

aw i forgot about maddie getting sick and crying :/ poor kid

melissa saying “i cant stand a chid that’s sick” sounds so edited like the intonation made it seem to me like they just cut her off mid-sentence i love lifetime

oh this was still when they were wearing normal stuff to class/rehearsal like black leotards bc they werent getting sent a trillion crazy 2-piece dancewear outfits for free yet bc they werent famous, man those were the days

Act 2:

the maddie chloe paige trio !!!! this is making me feel so nostalgic

“knees together, paige. you’re bow-legged, you need to fix that”

“you’re tall, you’re skinny, you’re a beautiful girl, you can do better than this. FOCUS” shes like 10 abby what the hell

“people think im tough and i guess i am but i would rather be the one to make your kid cry in the privacy of my studio than at an open-call audition in front of hundreds of people”

okay unpopular opinion alert: i agree with a lot of what abby says about stuff like this but her delivery is flawed, to but it euphemistically, that being said i think the production team of the show and the fame inflating her ego changed all of this somewhere over the course of the second season and its really sad to see :/ i can expand on that thought later tho

aw paige crying bc abby correcting her (but not saying anything personal or out of line, just technique corrections (at based on what we were shown, we dont know everything she said oop)) shes a sensitive kid she never should have been put on this show :(

paige looks exactly like her mom i didnt realize that before

nia and holly were done so dirty throughout the whole series in terms of the narrative the producers set up about nia being the weakest link :/

Act 3:

cathy’s entire involvement in the show from the very beginning was so painfully obviously scripted (or at least heavily staged)

vivi was also done dirty by the show’s narrative and she was only 6 and they presented her as like the butt of the joke bc her mom’s “character” was crazy and also she wasnt good at dance. i wonder how she feels about the show now that shes a teenager hmm. she really seemed not to give a fuck about dance for better or for worse when she was a kid tho so maybe she doesnt care ?

in what universe would an owner of another competitive dance studio bring her own kid to another studio more than an hour’s drive away, AND be under the impression that she could compete with them in a week, especially when they showed the kids’ and moms’ shocked reaction at the start of the episode to having to learn a dance in a week and compete it? like really what is the point of cathy and vivi being a part of this show im so ????

Act 4:

THE MINISTER DAWN OUTBURST HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THIS

this fight is about 50% of what got them a full season 1 and then things took off from there tbh. the other 50% was the electricity dance but thats a point for next episode..... :)

“you’re a minister act like one” “YOU’RE RIGHT I AM A MINISTER! LET’S PLAY THE BIBLE GAME ABBY, WHEN JESUS SAW THINGS THAT WERE WRONG HE WENT AFTER THEM, AND YOU’RE NOT GOING TO DO THIS TO MY KID” ma’am i think the wrongs jesus addressed were of slightly more importance than a preteen being told she cant take a dance class if shes violating the studio’s dress code

this is so good bc it wasnt staged afaik and there are regular students all throughout the building just STARING at them like lmao what even is going on, so im pretty sure this is real???

regardless, yeah dont wear socks and a tshirt to an acrobatics class, thats common fucking sense

another cameraman-in-mirror sighting, but its hard to think about angles when filming spontaneous drama like this, so i wont count it against them

“you called me fat” (i remember that being in the episode but thats not on the episode available through lifetime on demand that im watching from my moms tv hmmmmmm) “i told you to close and tuck in your two-piece costume, theres a big difference. HOW CAN YOU REMEMBER THAT BUT YOU CAN’T REMEMBER TO TURN YOUR FEET OUT” uh scream

she really called the police on this woman i cannot handle this. can you imagine being a police officer responding to this call?

“we have a parent thats out of control. pardon? no shes doesnt have weapons, just her mouth” iconic

im sorry im still not over the hair and makeup. the flat hair with the side bangs. the black pencil eyeliner applied all the way around the eye. why did any of us think this was a look :( why did we do this :(

Act 5:

they went all the way to phoenix to compete 3 numbers, only 2 of which are shown in the episode.

i think this is the only time they ever went to west coast dance explosion because its an actual competition and they wouldnt allow filming after this lol i think they did go to wcde one weekend in addition to a competition where they were filming but it wasnt shown or mentioned at all

abby not wanting brooke and paige to have a french manicure on stage if theyre the only ones in the group with the french tips is perfectly valid idk why it was framed as some crazy micromanaging shit

i also am really not a fan of the whole “high functioning alcoholic wine mom/crazy stage mom” schtick they were pushing for the first few episodes of this show

in retrospect i feel like so many of the quips in this episode were intentionally fucking crazy just to get the audience engaged enough to want to watch more episodes...

“see those girls down there, those girls with the legs? thats who you’re up against, so step it up”

abby warning them that its dangerous for their little party hats to slip when they’re doing aerials and pirouettes and stuff: “what if you were at radio city music hall and they had the ice rink out and you were doing a side aerial and fell 13 stories down and died, huh?” fantastic point abby thank you for saying that to 5 girls ages 8-12 less than 5 minutes before they went on stage. perfect time for a teaching moment like that :)

i forgot how bad the camera work was in the first few episodes for footage of their performances. like they really didnt think the show’s audience would actually want to watch the kids dance, the producers and editors thought we just wanted to see stage mothers yelling at each other lol

also the mic feed over the music of abby talking to herself giving them corrections while watching them dance on stage.... im so glad they quit doing that. i dont remember them doing it like that for any other episode, i hope im right

this choreo is very basic and its a cute dance i guess but its very cringe in some places and for the first episode this is such a forgettable group routine

their scandalized reaction to placing third and the sad piano music is so funny honestly

and maddies reaction in the interview which was almost definitely fed to her by the producers where shes like “i win all the time i dont really know what its like to LOSE i always win or get runner up” so many of maddies lines from season 1 interviews sound so fake and she was probably too naive to know they were getting her to say that stuff so they could paint her as a conceited brat (she was EIGHT)

the trio costume was so ugly im sorry (is it supposed to be like a 50s pinup bathing suit?) (and the headband thing looks so bad) and also the music is bad but they had no real authority over that bc of copyright stuff

chloe’s headpiece coming forward and the ensuing drama was another moment in the episode that really solidified public interest in the show imho....

“YOU’RE IN THE BAR HAVING A DRINK AND YOUR KID’S HEADPIECE IS FALLING OFF” “it did not FALL OFF it CAME FORWARD it was FINE!!!”

“mistakes happen, we’re human.” “YOU are. mistakes like that dont happen to me”

and then the “next time on dance moms” with the WILDLY INAPPROPRIATE electricity dance, of course. genuinely that was really smart of the producers in terms of structuring things to generate intrigue lol. and obviously it ended up working....

My Reactions and Thoughts to the Starry Line Special Live (from what i could remember)

(Long post ahead!)

Voice Drama 1:

“Ahhhhhh Banri!!! He’s back from the hospital!!”

“he’s a TEnSAi after all”

“oh????!!! a minilive?? thats so cute wtf”

Stage Performance (part 1):

“OH!!! they’re wearing their crossing live outfits!!”

“It’s the opening the opening the opening—“

“Aight Steady goes!!”

*insert surprised scream here* “AAAA THE NARUTO OPENING, WHICH MEANS THERES GONNA BE COVERSS”

“Right here, right now! BanG!”

Masa: On bass, *camera pans to Mae playing*

Me: MELISSAAAAAAA

“Oh lord here comes the long high note—“

“He held that note for FIFTEEN SECONDS, AND CONTINUED ON. HOW???”

“Oh!!! Bleach opening!! (Ngl I forgot they covered that song, which is sad cuz I didn’t remember DEEP VOICE MORISHII)”

Guitar riffs of Ryuuseiu is played vaguely, cue me scratching my head wondering what song it is (and thanks to Argocord for somehow recognizing it which promptly led to me losing my shit and feeling emotional the whole song)

“The ending!!! Of the anime!!!”

Voice Drama 2:

“NAYUTA?????”

“Oh no Ren skcbabajbc, he sounded like he choked on something”

“YOOOOO NAYUTA COMING IN TO COVER REN”

Stage Performance (part 2):

“OHHH OGAJINN!!!”

Ogajin walks up to the stage looking uninterested af

“He’s so in character HAHAHAHA”

“OHHH READY STEADY??? READY STEADY!!!”

“WHY are the holes in the pants of his knees so big???”

“Man he’s just straight up vibing to the music, and honestly? Same tbh”

Stage shows both Masa and Ogajin, separated by A GLASS WALL RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE

I literally lost my shit when I saw that

Which led me to think “Oh Starting Over???”

Cue Masa singing loudly into the mic like it’s nobody’s business with “SAA IKOUZE”

“STAND UP! HASHIRE! Nande demo starting over!!” (I still love how Ogajin sings this part)

“Only you can do it! Do it! Go for it sa do it! Do it now!

Throughout the performance I kept thinking bout how good Ogajin sings in his live performances??? Like holy shit he sounds so much like the studio version that it’s scary

Ogajin: Karma.

Me: OHHH!!!!! YOOOOO WHAT???!!!! THE KARMA???? THE SAME ONE FROM GARUPA????

Also I just wanna mention that whoever did the lighting deserves a raise, like damn it’s rlly good

Aaaaaa I honestly rlly love how much Masa and Ogajin’s voices mix so well together!!

THEYRE REACHING OUT TO EACH OTHER, but the glass wall is separating them lmao (undoubtedly one of the highlights of the live tbh)

But yeah the image above might also be playing into the hand symbolism Ren and Nayuta has goin on?? They’ve been showing this A LOT in their MVs

Ogajin: *makes brief eye contact with Masa before walking off the stage immediately after the song ends*

Masa: *acting as Ren, looking towards Ogajin walking off* ...Nayuta-kun??

Me: Wow he rlly just left the stage like that skfnekwkgnn

Voice Drama 3:

“Nayuta rlly walked off the whole restaurant, what a mood”

Ren shows his gratitude to Nayuta by thanking him, Nayuta kinda just responds with “it’s nothin much” or like he’s brushing it off

Idk I’m just rlly happy that we see more of them interacting after the anime ended

Also there was some Wataren crumbs?? Like barely

ok so idk where exactly this happens during the live but

Ren says some stuff like “Welcome home, Banri!”

And Banri replies with “I’m back!” like “Tadaima!”

And i honestly just broke down then and there, like i WEEPED when he said that AAAAAAA ILY SM BANRIII 💖💖💖

Stage Performance (part 3):

“AGAINNNN AHHHHHH”

“OH the cameraman is tryin to show the performance like the anime thru Banri’s POV??? I love that omg” (give this guy a raise too tbh)

Cameras kept switching back and forth between the guy on stage and the ones around the stage (ofc it looked a bit funny since everyone was basically facing the cameraman like he was Banri lol)

The whole band sang the “yeah yeah yeah, whoa yeah yeah yeah” part of Goal Line to start it off (they wanted us the audience to sing along as well which was vry cute)

Cameras tried to follow the same angles as the anime (the one where they perform at DesFes) which I found rlly cool

“AHAAAA STARRY LINE, OF COURSE, this whole live was named after this song after all”

And then I basically vibed to the rest of the song cuz it’s such a special song

“Oh they’re leaving, come back! Skfngng”

The lights were off at the stage for like 5-10 minutes?? AND THEN THEY CAME BACK WEARING THE STARRY LINE MERCH (including Ogajin ofc since this was now the encore)

Encore:

they asked the audience to choose a song for them to play, and turns out Starting Over was the most popular one! (ngl i wanted Pray but i understand that ppl wanted to hear more of Ogajin)

So then they played Starting Over, except that it was VERY OOC (but still fun nonetheless!)

“OHHH WAIT WAIT WAIT”

“ARE BOTH OGAJIN AND HYUUSUKE SINGING THEIR PARTS OF THE SONG TOGETHER????? HOLY SHIT-”

and if u thought that Ogajin was vibing before, then think again cuz this man was straight up jamming out on stage whilst still keepin the nayuta voice

After that, Ogajin left the stage, and Mae tried to keep him from leaving lol

“oh there he goes”

“VOICE???? VOICEEEEEE”

“KANSEI WO, AGERO”

OH OMG they all sang it in acapella form at first, then slowly led into the song with the instruments, I remember freakin out over this tbh

“ARE YOU DREAMING? YES! WE ARE THE ONE! BANG!”

OH they also tried to do the same camera angles like the anime?? that was cool

“OH NOO WAIT WHAT HAPPENED TO MAE’S MIC?? IT GOT CUT OFF OH NO”

you couldn’t hear Wataru’s line so it was just instrumentals until Ren’s part came along

“OH thank goodness they fixed Mae’s mic, whew”

“CALLING, CALL DREAMING WORLD! CALLING, CALL YOUUUU”

...and then they went offstage!

i could prob ramble more about the backstage session, but i wasn’t there in the first half of the free session haha

and from what i’ve seen of someone’s live tweeting of the paid one, it seems that it was pretty emotional! (since it was directed towards Masa’s birthday, and they ended up tearing up?? awww)

Helen's fkn dying send help. fuck this lady should not be working with children considering how much she hates children. o shit where's helen. her beds all rolled up. can hear her hacking away in the distance. yikes that sounds bad. jane be creepin. oh fuck she's a terrible actress even as a kid. who honestly thinks its a good idea to hire her. she lying in her dying friend's bed and she's breathing all over her. isn't anna paquin australian? no? ah new zealand fairo. oh fuck Helen's daed. she's trying to squeeze out tears ahah oh no. she can't manage it. anna go back to new zealand you suck at acting who hired you ever. Riparoonies helen. that was actually the greatest jane and helen moment i've seen tbh. oh damn cool transition as she walked from helen's grave - she went from kid to adult. whats this part down the midde all of them got. Miss Temple fam, persuasion lady, fantastic lady, crying as Jane leaves like her mumma. this jane is long-flat-faced with a long protruding jaw, and very tall and skinny. thornfield looks like its already burned down ahaha. straight up castle here. she's got her drawing stuff as well as her bag. nice friendly ol mate meets her and opens the gates - big ass square this is some game of thrones shit yearh this place is like medieval more than victorian. the middle parted hair and the curled twists behind her head they're pretty much exactly the same in most Janes. all chillin and chatting about this together rather than completely separate. adele actually legit sounds french rather than just pretending? noice. dreary, cold, dark halls. her room is bright and airy with a four-poster bed and bay windows and lots of very nice furniture. river runs beside it; enormous tapestries; main gallery with lots of furniture and paintings and sculpures all covered in sheets with windows open to let in light; the doors are very large and heavy. Janes got a very long neck she looks legit like a fkn swan lmao. ooh a rochester backstory. well-travelled, intelliegent, can't tell if he's talking in jest or in earnest, or if he is pleased or irritated, not a happy man. they're just walking about in his rooms. the sun shines bright but cannot reach them through the thick mist. they're very soft-spoken. god her head is so far forward she's like the alien - long ass neck stretching forward and then her chin and jaw stretching wayyyy forward. wack wack anatomy. it's very dark and dreary. she's off for a walk leaving adele to do like 5 sums. oh she's been here five minutes and they're already meeting. the music is like ... not appropriately intense? he just sorta looked at her, the horse tripped over and then he was on the floor and she's like whoops uh you alright bro. he's outright lying and pretending that he's not rochester his hair is grotty he's got like no hair on top they've just tries to scraggle it. this is so stunted and awkward. i hope it gets better. he's very gentle and she's pretty nonexistent to far. my god very gentle man. what. is he even rochester? that's a german shepherd. noice. playin chess by himself by the fire lol. this movie would be made infinitely better by an actual soundtrack. they're all chilling together again it's interesting - adele and fairfax and rochester and jane. wait she's been here 4 months. it literally didn't show anything about her chilling here. she talked back and now he's grumpy lol. what a terrible start compared to like... every other first convo. isn't she supposed to be not great at piano and yet she's teaching adele -- wait now we're at another convo between the duo. this convo is the other half of --- wait now we're talking sketches? jesus she hmm what are they talking about she's being forward and fuck her chin twists forward as she speaks she kinda looks like the wicked witch of the west. he's judging her drawings like he can do better. this is a mess? the best part about this so far is adele. there's no sense of time. adele is gorgeous honestly. she's pale and gaunt with bags beneath her eyes. wait here's the next part of the conversation. blunt and brusque replies from her. god they're so obviously acting its painful. they have no chemistry because the CONVERSATION IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. they've done it on pruspose to try stretch things out a bit but like plz EY why he scrunch up the drawing wtf. 'and remember the shadows are as important as the light'. dudes. these are private conversations? it would be alright to try it more naturally but they're just not the kind of things you casually say. it's impersonal and there's no intimacy. sit there and watch a kid dance to the sound of a music box. he's so grumpy looking. now snapping at the kid. he's annoying. like a violent dude he feels more like a nice guy quick to snap - definitely kinda unhinged. and now drunk. hmm i don't like it. she told him not to be mean to adele and he rages about her mother, 'you've made adele feel unwanted and unloved' damn this Jane goes for the throat. she's too good for him I can see it now m8. he's a psycho run. red flag red flag. don't like it. lol he wake up like huh.... oh look beds on fire... huh... well suppose i should sort it out... huh... fuck they're barely acting huh. do they even want to be here. how much are these guys getting paid. he's literally a drunk. and has she had a drink in her life? she just went for it? omg so impersonal - isn't he supposed to be already half in love with her by this point? camera angle just flicks forward and back as the conversation goes on and when theres action it just pans back to the widest shot ever lol just show the entire scene why give any emphasis or focus to anything who needs reaction shots and feelings of being in it rather than observing it. fkn ey. he's literally just an angry blitering brooding drunk yikes. he's staring at her tits? these conversations man... he definitely just said jade instead of jane. m8 don't tell me he didn't. there's more intimacy between all the servants and jane and feeling more like an actual squad living together than there is any feeling between rochester and jane. adeles got a frog lol cute. 'you're a fool,' jane tells her reflection. this music is so shit it's bringing everything down. rochester, who's been an unfeeling ass the whole time, holds her hand once and now she's got a big crush on him. she's very spirited - to the point where she could too easily be cruel. like it's not just a repressed forcefulness it's like a hidden rage. can see her going mad and chopping someone up with icy rage and poised pleasure. wonder if i'm in a mood and interpreting this wrong? but honestly. dancing rochester now? instead of singing. adele is glaring at Mrs Ingram who just insulted jane lolol go kid she's definitely the best part. the background people actually make this place feel alive and natural, completely unlike their FUCKING AWFUL conversations. jesus what. god could you have two people less interested in each other? i think this fairfax knows about bertha. there's a 'tapestry bedroom'? lol what does that mean. they're dancing, playing cards, piano, the lot. oh the walls are literally covered in tapestries, that's creepy af. theres so much blood my dude would be dead yo. will hurt like doesn't know how to act. wwait theyve skipped my 'fav scene'?? theyre shaking hands again, wtf is this. wait what shes just met stjohn n he;s the one telling her all about the reeds? petunias dying 'love me then or hate me as you will - you have my full and free forgiveness' - i cant forgive any version that misses that out: its so powerful as part of her character. stalking her while he smokes in the dark what a creeper. 'how cuold you be so stupid!' lol fight him Jane i dont even know how we got to kissing likr the movie is almost 2 hours and yet it feels SO rushed. literally took away all the secret courting and his sneaky declarations. shes a modern woman trapped in an old age. she is so skinny. and with entirely stiff expressions. ew he makes me so uncomfortable. theyre not even trying lol. acting ey acting have u heard of it. just left jane at the altar like bye bitch.shes just in a giant empty ugly room. bertha is a very young and frightened girl but also very sick in the typical long white dress and long dark hair. god this guy is a whingebum. bertha understands everything he's saying. oh yikes lol she just whipped a log from the fire and went after Jane and Jane just put her veil back down with like a sigh turned and yeeted slowly away long ass veil over a white bonnet, silk cape thing in a dark hallway walking all miserable. she's outies lol he's just let her walk out? i love u and i love u. bye. bertha's taken another log from the fire and lit the wedding dress on fire along with the house ahaha. wait he let her leave the house then ran after her on horseback but had to stop after bertha lit the place on fire it started burning and we're actually seeing it happen? interesting. the house is burning, pepople are running, bertha's on the battlements and rochester is going up there to --oh fuck grace poole got yeeted over by bertha oh she's flying ahahaha jumped down to where she threw grace poole. rochesters in the fire. jane's off and racing. it's all happened at once. she went to stjohns, didn't even get dumped in teh marshes but down she goes after chilling in a coach for 3 days. shes been there a month. her jaw is so long and forward its creepy. again one fo the few telling her that she's wealthy from inheritance from her uncle. more backstory. she was deeply loved by her parents, now she's wealthy, lifes looking up but she's all upset after than asshole lol move on and be happy. she's hearing his voice on the wind like please chill. damn 6months. what. um. he's very awkwardly trying to propose? but its like the last half of the conversation with the first bit just cut out. so weird. she looks normal face-on. oh she decides after the proposal to go back - none of that chasing after voices nonsense. whoops that shit burned downnn. doggoooo is still alive. what a good boy. fuck me there's like no anticipation, no intensity, no build-up, no chemistry, it's so dry and cold and heartless. christ acting. act. acting. act. please. act. what is happening. act. she has the neck of a swan ol mate. fucking gross. their words are stilted, and not romantic in the slightest and especially not in their delivery. theyre walking with no kids but the dog but they're talking about the kids. oh my god. that was pretty fkn awful. like seriously not good.

QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?

It's really hard to pick, but I'd say the Hyejung-focused parts (chapters 5 & 6) were my favorites. Focusing on her studies, not knowing what she wants to be, tearing out her roots to move to Japan, getting homesick and feeling guilty for it.

yes. also a great scene. but also that scene made me like tina a whole lot. it had that element of goofiness (since she just picked her favorite) but had that immense kind-hearted underbelly. because i mean really, i dont know anyone who would bring me a soda to congratulate me on my first day of school.

i think my personal fave scene is actually when nao and masaki are walking together and each just having these thoughts about how they should interact and the various scenarios. especially nao imagining the music would bond them as friends while masaki is like "oh no i will be looked down upon for liking lady gaga."

yes. i also love that it shows a good side to masaki in that hes basically just an average, socially awkward dork who is probably having some language and cultural gap problems. since ya know, our first impression of him was just rudeness otherwise.

i want to say in general i really love this comic's pacing though. like i always feel like the emotions are given time to be showcased but dont drag on too overly much.

QUESTION 2. Of those staying in Himawari Share, Shinichi and Masaki are the two we know least about in the current story. Do you think there’s any particular reason the two are staying at Himawari Share, or does it just happen to have a convenient location for them? Like the other characters, do you think they have personal histories or pasts that will come to light? Do you think that it is significant in some way that Shinichi and Masaki are mentioned to be brothers? As time goes on, do you think the others will bond with Masaki, or will the language and culture gap keep interfering? What about Shinichi? Will Nao, at least, become able to understand him better, or will his fast talking still prove too much?

i want to go out on a limb and just say theyre there cause convenient location. but i do think they got some sort of hidden past history. cause at the very least shinichi and masaki dont really look like theyre related. so it makes me wonder if this is maybe a half-sibling relationship going on

yeah im confused at what the share is. cause the girls make it look like its like a special house dorm house for international students who are coming to work and learn in japan. but shinichi and masaki definitely dont appear to be international, so what are they doing there? now its possible they are also going to college in some fashion. but im not entirely sure since it still seems weird to have potentially two natives with three international students.

but to be fair, maybe they own himawari share

QUESTION 3. One of the comic’s themes revolves around finding yourself, and this issue has given many characters quite the obstacle. In the case of Nao, do you think she will come to terms with that missing part of herself by being in Japan, or will there forever be a gap no matter how much time she spends there? As Nao spends more time there, do you think she’ll feel the culture gap grow or shrink, and how might that affect her? In the case of Hyejung, do you think she’ll figure out what she wants to do with her life, or do you think that still might remain elusive? Additionally, do you think she’ll be able to reconcile with her family? Lastly, in the case of Tina, do you think her part time job will work out, or will the language gap make things too much of a struggle? If she does lose her job, what do you think she’ll do and how might this affect her reasons for being in Japan?

i think it's not going to turn out how any of the girls' plan. maybe hyuejung finds her purpose is back in korea, maybe it's in japan, etc.

nao is here to reconnect to the missing part of herself and re-learn japanese. while she may end up learning japanese, i don't think reconnecting with her past will happen so much.

she'll see a large culture gap, or get distracted with something else

tbh i do think hyejung isnt going to find exactly what she wants. because i feel her desire to go to japan was driven more by a desire to escape her reality versus thinking "yes this is the place where i can find myself"

and shes the one who seems most homesick as well

not ot say i think the journey will be in vain

and i think shell at least learn things about herself

like how to live independently for herself

away from the parents

in nao's case, i think shell...come to terms that she cant have a different past. im actually thinking whats going to happen is shes going to run into something that makes her go "whoa wait america was way better in this aspect" and then shell realize that if she had stayed in japan, she also wouldnt know the american culture she grew up in.

yeah i do think thats the case with nao. shes going to have to realize that she cant have two pasts or that other half. but i do think being in japan will be both good and bad for it. cause on the plus side, she gets to see what she missed out on, but on the otherhand shes also going to feel the sting of that gap cause im sure shes gonna run into a festival where shes plain just like "i dont understand this"

although assuming her mom is still alive(?) then itll be interesting if she can talk to her mom in japanese again or something

QUESTION 4. Given the focus of the comic is on international students and cultural gaps, to a degree, there are lots of interesting potential scenarios. Did you find the comic’s unique method of showcasing language gaps interesting? How did it change how you viewed the characters’ experiences? Are there any cultural experiences that you’re looking forward to seeing the characters experience? If so, why? Do you feel our heroines will continue to be able to wing it, or will they commit some sort of cultural blunder? If the latter, how do you expect that to play out and emotionally affect the culprit? On a more character oriented level, what other struggles do you think the characters might have in their everyday, personal lives? Do you think everyone will continue to get along, or might tension in Himawari Share grow for some reason? Lastly, do you think romance might be in bloom with any characters?

1. When did you both get together? we started to flirt/hang out around april 2016, we officially started dating in may 2016 though.

5. Were you already close friends before going out as a couple? not rly, we tried to date before and that lasted for a week..didnt talk for a while. when we got back into contact around end of the march of 2016 we kinda were “friends” but not rly.

9. Do you live together? we did for a bit. not anymore. were planning on finding our own place soon though now that we both have jobs

If no, what ring would you like? yeah we got engaged in feb. basically connor wanted this TV he found on kijiji and we went to go get it. it was in a town that was 40 mins away, anyways on the way back we pulls over on the side of the road and im like wtf and then he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. it took me by surprised, bc i wasnt expecting it obvs and i didnt think he would ever ask me tbh bc he said he didnt like the idea of marriage.

okay time to talk abt star wars

BENICIO DEL TORO IS IN IT like what a surprise and a delight. i went w ten members of my family and half of us had no idea until the credits like UH, what the FUCK is this guy doing in it alright

but yea real quick i havent seen shit abt laura dern and how amazing she was like they keep these films so under wraps no one knew what her character even was but WOW did she do a good job. like playing off everything in your plans only to have the best and smartest intentions and when leia walks through those doors into the command room w poe and hes like oh sweet and she whips out her blaster was THW BEST like ‘boy youve caused a lot of trouble for my sweetheart smart gal holdo and its time for you to Stop™’ and then when she decides to LITERALLY DIE to help the escape pods get away and poes like ‘GREAT shes abandoning us’ leias like nO sHeS NoT!! like no. no.

i really liked the humor it was few and far between but it was good. chewie abt to eat the porg. poe pranking hux w the bad signal and him FALLING FOR IT OM G as a stall technique, luke’s twiceover ‘AMAZING everything you said was completely wrong’, the whole ‘the jus PARKED THE SHIp on the beach and i TOLD THEM it was public but they jus went to the casino’ like what assholes but then it was.. rose’s ship damn, poe’s ‘permission to get in a ship and blow shit up’ to leia, when it was funny it was great.

I REALLY LIKED ROSE and i liked the necklace connection w paige, the TRUE HERO of the opening battle w the bombs, such an emotional scene she killed it. but yea back to rose she was cute a good character i liked her. i fell in love w kellie through interviews tho so it wasnt hard.

I FEEL LIKE FINN WOKE UP TOO QUICK but i get it tho. like theyre evacuating hes gotta. wake up. get up. why the water?? in the siut tho? that shouldve been explained wtf.

also the whole force bond wasn’t super well-done. it was explained to where it was okay but i still feel like they should’ve had more scenes where they were filmed in the same location, like seeing each other through their own eyes where its only them not the surroundings, that kinda killed it. not very well done c- rian johnson no pls.

i still dont?? get why ppl do reylo. i still dont see it. i honestly think they jus want two jedi leads together, bc that hasnt happened yet. i dont think their relationship is abusive at any point tho?? i saw ppl on abt it the other day and?? did we watch the same movie or are you jus fucking salty and want a reaction or?? anyway. its a conflict. in the end i feel like he wanted her power, not jus her, beside him. you can see, someone mentioned earlier, that he kinda jumps the whole ‘lets rule the galaxy’ on impulse to maintain his stance of control.

all the shit on canto bight was important. showing how to some people everyone is the same. they deal to whoever they need to to get rich. that whole place was beautiful. for the longest time i thought the master codebreaker WAS the guy they found and the noble who had it had taken the lapel but NOPE

one of the best scenes was talking with maz in the middle of a fucking UNION BATTLE like jeez. extreme but funny, another humor that was on point.

CRAIT WAS THE BEST PLANET i loved /loved/ the cinematic appeal of red salt covered by white frost. it was great. it made for some really cool effect scenes, like the old fighters skating across and kicking up red salt clouds amidst all the white. the part where ben slices into luke and then ext shit is the cleared away snow and then his foot clearing away to reveal red like is that lukes blood??? maybe?? what a good move thats one point for mr rian johnson there that caught me off guard nice

and more!! like firing at luke and again kicking up the red salt, it was all good. got some really great effects. the best setting by far.

i dont understand finn’s sacrifice-ram-into-the-cannon thing that was stupid and a bad mvoe and made no sense and wtf??

yea but when you get down to it lets talk abt luke bc. the quote abt mark hating evry choice of luke char’s yea im glad rian is gone and wtf was up w killing him off for no reason in the end???? he jus goes. for no reason. its like we gotta pick off the old trio one by one. he’d probably announce leia’s death in the opening written sequence if he was in charge of nine. like there was no!!! point! damn. no point. and now carrie’s gone and they cant cgi an entire movie w leia so??? fuck. theyre all three gone now which sucks bc it jus sucks. im still sad carrie’s gone.

one of the better parts was ben choosing not to fire on the cockpit bc his mOM is there cant do that shit that was good.

back to luke real quick what a total character bomb. assassination. wt FUCK would he choose to kill ben bc ‘the dark side was already in him’ bitch he saved darth vader!!!!! and shit wanna tell me a little dark hold scared him enough for death wtf is wrong w rian johnson shit.

the whole plotline w holdo was amazing like she was portrayed as kinda a self-centered betrayer like not in the ‘im on the wrong side’ but in the ‘i only care about my survival’ shit which was why it was nice to have the canto bight comparison. but then her plans were revealed and you see she had the true intentions from the beginning but why the FUCK SHE COUNDLT TELl poe i dont know that was another Bad Move™ for fuckin rian johnson.

we talk about dead heroes at the beginnign of the movie. starting with paige tico, holdo was definitely the next big one and WHAT A SACRIFICE she made. damn.

hi im che and i really liked how luke came back and leia n him hugged it out and then he told him he couldnt save ben but then he lets him go to Mull™. funniest scene was when theyre firing EVERYTHING WEVE GOT at luke and MORRE,MORE even and then he jus. brushes his shoulder which contains nothing bc hes not even there in the most dramatic move of the past three films produced in the sw universe.

and then ben cuts thru him a couple times and we see hes not even there which. shit. okay. caught us off guard there with that bc he hugged leia so he was clearly solid?? but then he wasnt? or was he and it jus zones out bc something tried to cut thru him, either way you didnt know until it happened bc astral projection in star wars aint exacly a thing. like you gotta be dead to show up places where you arent.

im confused on ben as a character and where he is going. he really isn’t on a side really? he’s with the first order currently but i seriously doubt he’ll be supreme leader in the next. snoke kinda died too easily too like i expected him to be wounded not sliced in half in the saber move was all saw coming™. different. strange. not sure what to expect really. what are his intentions now? did he rally have any in the first place?? luke is kinda gone again for no reason so he doesnt rly have anyone to go to. sorta.

adam driver is rly jus an amazing actor in this top tier a+++.

i rly like phasma in this. christie did a wonderful job, and we SW HER EYE SHIT i was waiting for her to talk off the helmet and it never. happened. but what a dramatic scene and was an ending to her like wow.
