I sort of wish Vex, and even Pike to some degree, held more reservations towards helping them like Percy did. They didn’t need to be as vehement, but it really felt like they were just vessels to hand BH the story. I wouldn’t have like that level of just giving the characters what they want from any NPC, but especially former PCs that I feel should have more depth.

Yeah, just made my post about Vex specifically (again, Pike I'll buy because of the fundamental tenets of the Everlight) and I like how Percy was played (and I think Keyleth just completely dipping was pretty funny, ngl) but as I said about 4SD, I truly, truly do not understand how Matt, an experienced DM, did not think that having a character on a specific mission for Keyleth and who lost his husband and father-in-law defending her would not come up as an shortcut solution. I actually am not terribly annoyed at not going into the depth of former PCs because you can watch 115 episodes of Campaign 1, 3 seasons of TLOVM, and 2 sourcebooks if you want that; but it is true that they kind of feel like vessels to achieve a resurrection. Like, on some level, it's like...if you want to revisit Whitestone, run some one shots?

For what it's worth having an astral projection-like excursion is actually a pretty good way to handle it and I'm enjoying that a lot! But I keep coming back to the following, and keep in mind that I am not Asian nor north African, but like, it really fucking sucks that we have a campaign set on Marquet, and that all this effort was put into getting sensitivity consultants to work on Marquet, and then we're doing the Whitestone Nostalgia Tour instead, when it would be so easy for Eshteross (or Manaia or whoever) to have a long-shot contact in Ank'Harel who could achieve the same thing while expanding what we know about the world and without all this weird baggage.

Im pretty content with the changes they made the last 3 episodes! Especially Keyleth taking what was Vex's hit in the Ziggurat. That led so well into hinting at Vax taking a level of druid at some point and it also freed up Vex for her very Iconic Line with Percy. I also think its gonna make a future Vex death hit Even harder, especially for Vax.

Post-Episode 10 Thoughts:

I honestly found the first half of this episode really slow? I understand it for exposition���s sake but the pacing was off in this for me

I’m back on my Anna Ripley is hot bullshit huh......

vax flame tongue dagger cool as shit

really enjoyed the twins content in this one, especially vex’s reaction to vax getting charmed

the cassandra reveal was done very faithfully to the game, i can’t say it shook me more than the original but it was good

REALLY glad they let keyleth have that line “and abandon the revolution we started?” because while i get why it couldn’t be a bigger Thing like it was in game, it’s so integral to keyleth that she was the one- the ONLY one originally who was thinking like that

like i said, the back half really picked up and i had been looking forward to the “heavy” scene- that’s one of my faves on the soundtrack and it didn’t disappoint! grog swimming through ACID while pike heals him? sick as fuck

the little “forgot my drawers” moment made me chuckle

Post Episode-11 Thoughts:

keyleth’s sunlight moment was AMAZING ICONIC UNPARALLELED. it worked for her PERFECTLY. her little plea to the sun tree i- UGH

“i broke the world for us” was a little underplayed ngl

ADORED the adaptation of spells; pike’s mass heal, scanlan’s “shh” (paralleling delilah’s “shh”) indicating his counterspell

also fuck delilah for silencing my man but worth it for scanlan’s d20 heart eyes

the vex & vax duel ending in their hug im soft

STUNNING ending how pike got poofed because of the activation of the ziggurat’s anti-magic field (i think?) but honestly how are they gonna heal kiki. i dont remember her going down in this fight and i certainly dont remember how she was healed (meaning that my memory is so bad im not sure this happened in canon or was a TLOVM only choice). excited to see how they’re “fixing” this in the next episode.

Post-Episode 12 Thoughts:

god im so shook by the last 5 minutes im gonna find it hard to characterize the early part of the episode

not sure how i feel about percy’s mind journey? it was good but maybe just didn’t hit quite as hard as i wanted it to

darling take off the mask was perfect

ultimately, with the way it was solved, and i realize that this was a tribute to vaxleth, that vax pays attention to keyleth and that’s why he knew how to do natural healing- i just felt like keyleth’s heal was a bit anticlimactic? like if you’re going to make that the cliffhanger of episode 11, it just didn’t work for me. i actually enjoyed the moment fine, but i think it should’ve been placed at the end of episode 11 because it took all the drama off the cliffhanger

i did thoroughly enjoy vax comedically delivering “and i walk away”

for a minute before delilah died i was thinking they might keep her alive as a more continuous villain and my mind was racing about all the reasons i didn’t like that but then cass stabbed her and it was glorious dkfgjjldhgf

oh also can i just say cass’s VA was fucking killing it this episode?

additionally, i really liked in this episode and the last the shots where percy had one demonic eye and one regular as a sign of his struggle for control

VERY glad they kept the “gun in the acid” moment

yes i am mad that jarrett cut off scanlan’s song i thought it was gonna be a bonus track that wasn’t on the soundtrack dfklgldj (i had hope because kiki’s healing ditty also wasn’t on the soundtrack so i was like! they’re hiding songs from us!)

as a full perc’ahlia honestly im shipping vexleth harder than i ever have sjkdlfgkjld

it took me literally until like halfway through the convo with gilmore for me to be like hm. it’s the end of the briarwoods arc and they’re all gathered cool. cool cool. what could happe- OH MY GOD IT’S TIME IT’S HAPPENIGN (and then when sovereign uriel announced his proclamation i REALLY knew and it wasn’t a fake out- side note, SO sad we didn’t more uriel/khary, i adored him)

the ending was SUBLIME and just like i (and many others) predicted, season 2 will begin the chroma conclave arc. i am VERY satisfied with this and think that the chroma conclave can be done well in roughly 2 seasons. im also very intrigued when and where they’re going to throw kaylie in the plot

Some Final Bests and Faves:

Favorite Character of the Season: Well. It’s Pike. Of course, it’s Pike. Best Characterization of the Season (as opposed to favorite, who I thought rang truest and had the most nuance): Vex’ahlia Favorite Episode of The Final 3: Episode 11, that was just a fantastic battle ep Favorite Episode of the Season: I think I might have to go with Episode 4

Who got the rawest deal? I think I’d have to say, and maybe I’m clouded by biases, but I think that Scanlan and especially Grog got the rawest deal of the season. I’d more firmly say Scanlan, but I think in certain character beats he had his insecurities shine through the facade and he at least had Scanbo as a whole segment dedicated to him. Whereas Grog really got the shaft in screentime and meaningful moments. His highs come in his relationship with Pike, but a lot of the time, those moments are a lot more about her than him. I’d say his one big character beat is on the wagon with Vax in Episode 5(?). This feels to be expected as Scanlan and Grog are both highly comedic characters, and so when they’re not being directly played for laughs... they’re not really getting attention, and this is especially true for Grog. I am very happy that the Craven Edge arc is starting as a focus on him AND hopefully we’ll get Kevdak and Westruun next season.

The biggest struggles of the series: I think the biggest struggles of the series were probably humor and animation limitations. With humor, I think it really got there over time and by episodes 7-12, they’d found a good voice for their jokes. In terms of animation, the mixing of the CGI and the 2D animation always felt obvious and just didn’t look great. The 2D animation was fantastic, but when mixing came into play, often for things like enemies and monsters, it looked off. And I’m not really sure where they can go with that considering how insane D&D beasts are- animating them frame by frame 2D would be a nightmare, as many of the Titmouse crew have said! 

Where the series shined: It’s a beautiful adaptation. It feels so true to the campaign and the characters all at different points in the series felt like the ones I got to know over 115 episodes. The nuance snuck into so many character beats was phenomenal. And I think the ways in which they shifted and changed things were great too! I didn’t mind, honestly, any drops or combinations. It didn’t bother me a bit that Archie became the childhood friend and Keeper Yennen absorbed a lot of original Archie. There was no moment I was like “damn, they needed moment X, it doesn’t work without it.” On the limited episodes and 22 minute timeframe, I think they included every goddamn thing they needed to in the Briarwood arc. 

This series in insane, I don’t know what else to say. Fantastic work from everyone involved.

overall:

- i really, really enjoyed this ep, actually! Not sure what it is but so far I’ve very much been enjoying the second ep in each of the releases lmao.

- a lot more medical and biological questions coming out of this ep than i was expecting, but that’s how it goes sometimes i guess.

- I think in general the little character interactions and quips in action/battle are some of my favorites- they always feel very right and are always so telling in multiple ways :’D like Vex being mean to Keyleth but trusting her in combat, speaks VOLUMES. Grog raging being about rage, but also about his friends. Who ducks and hides, who backs up who- augh. lovely.

- Cass. <3 like, I know, there’s still Some Things that’ll happen, but damn shes BEEN thru it okay. 

- Pike’s scene with the Everlight- so, so, so, good. In dialogue, in VA, the bit with the VM silhouettes- very nice.

- Percy got a ricocheting bullet shot and some VERY cathartic murder and we love that for him and also his smoke demon. but mostly for him.

(Seriously, this list is just fast becoming who do I love most to least rather than who do I like to who I don’t.)

1) Vax (This whole Raven Queen thing has gone so much better than I could have imagined. Also, I love how he takes time for the little things, like sitting with Reginald’s body all night while his friends celebrate their victory.)

2) Keyleth (That druid magic is clutch in just about every circumstance. Need a 150 foot trench to drop bad guys into? Kiki’s got you. Need to evacuate refugees to safety in Whitestone? Have a tree portal. Basilisks threatening to petrify on sight? LOL giant scorpions don’t need to see you to fuck you up fam.)

3) Percy (I love that Whitestone has become a safe haven for refugees. I also love those moments when he just goes off. Boy did 172 points of damage to Umbrasyl in one round+action surge. Iconic.)

4) Pike (MONSTAH! NGL, I was kind of hoping she’d get the killing blow on Umbrasyl, but her moments were great and Ashley is just a treasure).

5) Scanlan (That mansion is amazing. And whatever his relationship with Kaylie is becoming is fascinating as hell to watch. Also, how did they ever think Laura was the dirty-minded one with all of Sam’s innuendo?)

6) Vex (I honestly don’t know what it is, but I’m getting some weird vibes from her these last few episodes. Also, the broom swiping moment was a very interesting character choice. I think I read somewhere that Matt adjusted Vex’s alignment because of it?)

7) Grog (The whole Craven Edge resolution was great, and I’m glad he’s finally free. And that entire Westruun arc with the herd and that story was *chef’s kiss*)

Ngl, I am very much for Laudna/Dusk but that's because I also ascribe to Ashley's philosophy that, so long as there is consent, everyone including the DM is fair game. That being said, people really need to back off Imogen. She deserves to have space to breathe and exist and feel, even if those feelings are not always positive to a fandom favourite (and there's a lot to say about a fandom that only likes Laudna and not, say, Keyleth or Beau). Like, home girl's neen on the edge since we met her. That she hasn't gone apeshit yet is a testament to her self-control, particularly when her bestie just took away the thing that was giving her some form of relief.

As a woman also constantly on edge from migraines, I'd kill the person who took away my painkillers regardless of whose fault it is, so I feel for Imogen more right now.

Oh same re: Ashley's philosophy - I don't know where she said that but yeah, my general feeling is that if other people are comfortable with your characters getting involved and you're interested, go for it! I actually would love if CR or D20 could talk about their expectation setting (D20 especially because I think theirs varies by campaign) because I think that would be a great thing for people to see.

I think it goes without saying that I also agree with the framing of Imogen's powers and their negative effects as chronic illness (and the gnarlrock as a potential treatment, even if not a cure).

I will say: this is not new to Laudna. I ran into many of the same things last campaign with Beau; I think it's just that the shipping for Beau was divided and that Beau also explicitly said in-game "my feelings towards Jester are a crush that I don't think I'll be pursuing; my feelings towards Yasha seem much more intense" such that there was no way to pin how things went on Jester unless you were outright lying (which, you know, people did), whereas here, it's all heavily speculative. I've said before that people did NOT like it if you said that Beau was arrogant, or that Caleb was like, mechanically, objectively, smarter, or that pre-magic item, so was Veth, and Fjord and Beau were tied.

It's also not exclusive to Marisha's characters, for that matter, though it's been pronounced for Beau and Laudna; I've had similar conversations about several other characters played by other cast members. There are just like, people out there who look at an ensemble show and say "this is about one person and their sidekicks actually". And, you know, their loss.

Pike’s scene trying to connect to the Everlight but only finding empty darkness legitimately made me tear up

The pike/grog scene… my heart….

I think the split up of character was very intelligent - playing on close character pairings (pike/grog, Percy/keyleth, vex/vax, and then instead of putting scanlan where he’d usually go with grog and pike, which frees up grog from goofing off so he can have his emotional moment with pike)

the gore was a little much at points but I did find the monster sufficiently scary

A monster grabbed grog through the boobs????

The darkness monsters defeated by light thing was a bit cliche but worked really well narratively with both keyleth and pike’s story beats and with the d&d concept of vulnerabilities

honestly, i found this batch of episodes had a lot more hitters in terms of jokes that worked. there were still quite a few swings and misses, but there were a lot more jokes that i genuinely laughed at in this batch than in the first few episodes. and the plot? WOOF!
