What if . . . . Death from PiB
!! WARNING LONG POST (Slight spoilers of PiB) !!
Okay so usually I’m not a making theory person but what if...HEAR ME OUT...Death from Puss In Boots movie is the official Grim Reaper of entire DreamWorks universe?
Tumblr media
We all the Pixar Theory connecting as one universe right but in alternate timelines?
What if its same with Dreamworks? Think about it? Let’s start with Shrek verse itself its practically the only universe that contains humans, fairy tail creatures, dragons, monsters, anthropomorphic characters & non-talking animal characters etc. And we all know Death very much exists in that universe right?
Now time to split and go through rest of the universes (other movies)
-Kung Fu Panda (Anthro)
-The Bad Guys (Humans/Anthro/Animals)
-How To Train Your Dragon (Human/Dragons)
-Madagascar (Anthro/Animals/Humans)
-Shark Tale (Anthro I guess? Since Humans are never mentioned in the movie)
-Over The Hedge (Anthro/Animals/Humans)
-Croods (Humans/Creatures/Animals)
-Rise Of The Guardians (Humans/Fairy tail Creatures)
-Megamind (Humans/Creatures (or aliens in this case)
Trolls (Fairy tail creatures....I guess?)
The list will go on if I’ll include every single Dreamworks movie...but you guess get my point right?
I’m not even saying this is a 100% a thing since in KFP3 we get to see the spirit realm where the departed kung fu warriors souls rests.  I guess the only explanation will be that Death only shows up for people who take life for granted. Especially someone like Puss who barely took his 8 lives seriously PLUS taunting by saying “I laugh at Death”

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken
Tumblr media
So uuuuuhhhhh yeah. I don't know what I was expecting with this movie. Wasn't expecting it to be good, and it wasn't. Nobody is fucking surprised.
Ruby Gillman is, well, a teenage kraken, who lives with her family on land and tries to blend in as a human while being Omg Quirky Relatable Shy Nerd (seriously this movie doesn't have an original bone in its body, we'll get into that more in a bit). She eventually discovers she can turn into a giant kraken and that she comes from kraken royalty. Throw in the breakdown of trust between her and her mother, a new "friendship" she strikes up with a mermaid named Chelsea, and OMG THE PROM IS TOMORROW and you have a whole mess of cliches that didn't come to an end nearly quick enough for me.
Tumblr media
So yeah this plot is... extremely derrivitive, on two very specific Pixar movies in particular. It's like... a weird crossover between Luca (fish people trying to blend in on land) and Turning Red (puberty metaphor, mommy issues, etc) and it does none of what those movies did well anywhere near as close to good as they did. Like this movie tries so hard to be surprising and have twists and turns and like... literally none of those surprises landed. None of the emotions landed. None of the jokes landed. Nothing in this boring ass movie landed.
Tumblr media
The characters are all pretty one-note. Ruby is your traditional nerdy, awkward girl with a crush on a guy who is also just as bland as stale bread. Her family is pretty uninteresting, her mom is... somewhat better, I guess, and I did like her grandma, but she was about the only character I found some level of enjoyment out of. We also have Chelsea, who big surprise, is our twist villain, as if I didn't see that coming from the second I saw her show up on screen. The way she so easily manipulates and plays Ruby is just... god it makes you wannt scream "DON'T TRUST HER YOU DIPSHIT" the entire time, like girl, I get you're an anxious 15 year old but you should know better jfc.
Tumblr media
This movie tries to have lore and be epic, but like... idk it just isn't. The climactic fight scene at the end was so slow-paced and dull, there wasn't really anything about it at all, which for what's essentially a giant kaiju fight, is a damn shame. The jokes were honestly non-existant, and the script itself is already hella dated with so much social media references and modern teen lingo (bestie, bae, etc) despite only coming out last year.
Tumblr media
It also doesn't help that, at least in my opinion, this movie is ugly. Like the animation itself is fine, but these goddamn character designs, christ I think they are some of the WORST to ever come out of a Dreamworks movie. The humans all have weird proportions that don't make sense, the krakens don't look like krakens at all and instead look like... humans with long tentacles, which is weird, and the set design... was admittedly ok to look at, but that's about it. Pair that with an utterly forgettable, but servicable score and plenty of equally forgettable pop songs and there's just not much going on here.
Tumblr media
I think, at the end of the day, Ruby Gillman is just... lame. Like the concept itself... isn't awful, but the execution, man, they just floundered (get it, fish) on all fronts here. No wonder this thing tanked at the box office. I wouldn't have gone to see it either.
Overall Rating: 4/10
Verdict: Harpoon these lame-ass krakens

Good Stuff: Megamind 2
Tumblr media
I remember many moons ago that I reviewed Dreamworks's Megamind in all its brilliance. I remember around that same time spitballing about a sequel. Cut to 2 years ago where they announced one and my optimism was in it. I wasn't expecting much, I had simple expectations of this since Dreamworks never slacked when it came to their sequels, you know? Now we're here... and it's like how am I meant to feel? Should I feel grateful for this sudden monkey's paw, this baboon's dishwater soaked digits for giving us this take on Megamind? [sigh] I don't want to be too sour about this though.
Tumblr media
Still better than what Wreck-it Ralph fans got, I guess
Now I'm not bothered by them making a film that's essentially a backdoor pilot to the TV series, nor that the original cast's been replaced, introducing new characters, and that the series itself isn't theatrical tier animation wise. That has always been an acceptable given with Dreamworks shows vs movies. What bothers me is that the new "film" couldn't have the same quality as before. Like this is unprecedented, where a sequel doesn't get the same stellar animation as before but is basically just episode 0 of the TV show. This never happened before, The Croods, Trolls, and Boss Baby never got downgraded to direct-to-DVD status with their sequels's animation looking worse than the fucking Paw Patrol movies. We JUST got Puss in Boots: The Last Wish couple years ago, so can you imagine how this kinda bothers me? I'm cool with it not having the same great writing and worldbuilding as the OG film, but this felt like the biggest disservice to any Megamind fan, heck any animation fan in general.
Tumblr media
Presentation was the ONE thing this should have had
But I've been sour enough, is the film/show actually worth it story and character wise? Dear lord, it's corny. It makes 60s Batman feel like a Christopher Nolan production. The characters you know are basically the only reason to watch this as none of the new ideas given are compelling enough that makes this feel justified. It's nice getting a series about heroes and villains, and Megamind himself is the most enjoyable part about all this, but it's like even I can't sift out the hidden gem this could have with what I've seen. It's like kids will enjoy this as is like the other Dreamworks shows, but it's hard imagining any older fan of the original movie being ecstatic enough to even bother past the film. I'm sorry, it's overall serviceable but I can't offer any silver lining that can prove this was worth it.
Tumblr media
Again, I can't even be mad. I'm used to this pain.
I don't know what else to say. Do I just lie to you all and say this wasn't a massive disappointment? This hasn't soured my feelings for Dreamworks, I'm still a believer given they aren't exactly the studio I go to for long running streaks of quality compared to others. It's not like Megamind was the biggest thing in my life, that goes to Shrek and Bluey, but I kinda wanted... more from this? This just barely does anything for me. I'm gonna watch a couple more episodes and honestly not look back when this weekend's over. What sucks the most is that this isn't the first time a sequel animation has made me feel this way, but this is a newfound low for me.
Tumblr media
I give Arzette: Jewel of Faramore a 9 out of 10. Just a fantastic blast from the past.
Megamind 2 gets a 2 out of 5. Fucking fiasco.

I had a thought.
It's been almost a year. Looking back on it, it seems to me that Universal and DreamWorks were so gosh-dang quiet about RUBY GILLMAN (comma) TEENAGE KRAKEN simply because it opened a month after the release of Disney's live-action LITTLE MERMAID remake. "Ya think??" Yeah, it's probably obvious, but I'll go into detail anyways.
Now, I'm not gonna dredge up the unnecessary and needless noise that briefly surrounded these two movies... But I do think the similarities, namely a redheaded mermaid, did play a part in everyone's hesitance to let the world know: This movie actually exists!
Not until 3 1/2 months before its release date, anyways. Again, such an unusual rollout for a high-end animated movie that cost roughly $70m to make.
TEENAGE KRAKEN apparently was in development in some form at DreamWorks since the mid-2010s, which seems feasible, given how long these things take from conception to completion. Very rarely are they fast-tracked, like say, THE EMOJI MOVIE was. Tony Leondis created the pitch for that in early 2015, and three studios got in a bidding war over it. Sony was the winner (Paramount and WB were the other candidates), picked it up ASAP, greenlit it right away, and within two years the movie was in multiplexes... That was... Quick!
But usually, it's a lengthy development-to-production cycle. No one outside the walls of DreamWorks knew what this sea monster movie was until scooper sites started "reporting" it in mid-2021. The LITTLE MERMAID remake already was known to the public well before that. It had gotten its late spring 2023 release date a few months after these scoops about GILLMAN got out. MEET THE GILLMANS, it was known as, for a long time.
By this point in time, DreamWorks' schedule was pretty clear-cut. BOSS BABY 2 was pretty much out, or coming out. BAD GUYS was spring 2022, PUSS IN BOOTS 2 was penciled in for fall 2022. Both announced a while before that. Universal had Illumination's SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE pegged for Christmas 2022, and then an untitled DreamWorks movie set for April 2023 would follow that. That was going to be RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN... Which would've placed it a little over a month before Disney's Memorial Day release of THE LITTLE MERMAID.
However, RUBY GILLMAN could've been a fall 2022 release...
At one point in time, DreamWorks had THE BAD GUYS scheduled for September 2021. That would be followed by PUSS IN BOOTS 2 in April 2022, probably followed by RUBY GILLMAN in the fall... TROLLS 3 already had the fall 2023 slot by this point, one could guess that the spring 2023 movie could've been... I dunno, THE WILD ROBOT? ORION AND THE DARK, even? Possibly KUNG FU PANDA 4.
Often times, movie slates get domino'd in animation-land. Usually, DreamWorks' slate changes didn't really effect Illumination's. They typically lock the 4th of July frame and the Christmas frame.
COVID-19 certainly played a part in things getting pushed back, for DreamWorks. If you remember, BOSS BABY 2 was initially thought to be a late March 2021 release. That date was inked shortly after the first movie arrived and surprisingly broke out in the spring of 2017. It moved to September 2021, pushing BAD GUYS to April 2022... Then it moved up a bit, as an experimental day-and-date release in July 2021. Occupying the slot MINIONS 2 was originally looking at. It didn't make back its money theatrically, but a third BOSS BABY is coming, so DreamWorks essentially must've said "mulligan". (It also helps that the first movie and the TV series do consistently well on streaming.)
So by the end of 2021, we were looking at BAD GUYS as an April 2022 release, PUSS 2 as a September 2022 release, and something yet to be titled after that in April 2023 in addition to TROLLS 3 in November of that year. Illumination's MINIONS sequel, after two major COVID-19-related delays, was set for July 2022, and SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE would follow Christmas week... All seemed to lock together, even though DreamWorks was still being mum about what Untitled April 2023 Movie was...
But then... Illumination delayed MARIO. To April 2023, the slot that RUBY GILLMAN was looking at. This was done to coincide with the Super Nintendo World theme park opening... So, DreamWorks moved right into the ripe Christmas frame with PUSS IN BOOTS 2.
Feasibly, they could've moved RUBY GILLMAN up to January or something, and kept PUSS 2 in September... But they opted to give PUSS 2 the Christmas frame, thus a long, record-breaking leggy run. Worked out perfectly for the kitty, but it ultimately sunk the sea monsters.
MARIO taking April meant that RUBY GILLMAN had to move, so Universal chose late June 2023. 4th of July frame... That Illumination's MIGRATION originally occupied... MIGRATION took this past Christmas slot. All feel into place after that, but poor RUBY GILLMAN now was opening after LITTLE MERMAID... And I think Universal/DreamWorks just kinda tossed it off. Didn't announce its existence at all until about 3 1/2 months before release, as if they could wipe their hands of it and move onto the next few movies. THE WILD ROBOT and DOG MAN have been announced and have concrete release dates, well ahead of schedule. The latter was known to be in development for a long while, too. WILD ROBOT is a fairly recently announcement. ORION AND THE DARK was known about at least half a year before its Netflix debut. And that's a streaming movie, not like a big theatrical performance was expected of it.
I bring this up now because I keep thinking of the untitled Thanksgiving 2024 WDAS movie, and how the Disney Co. still hasn't officially revealed what it is... And there are nine months to go. Again, usually these things are announced a year or so in advance. If they aren't ready after being unveiled to the world, then they simply get delayed... But, Disney's curiously cutting this one pretty close. Heck, ENCANTO, STRANGE WORLD, and WISH were cut pretty close as well. Relatively speaking. Usually a WDAS is known about 2-3 years in advance. I'm sure we'll learn about what it is soon, but that they're still being this quiet about it makes me wonder. And given other things going on with WDAS itself, I get a little concerned, ya know?
Or everything's ginger-peachy, and they have a strategy for it, the movie itself is fine, and it speedily introduces itself via a teaser trailer sometime soon and then sticks the landing. Maybe it's ahead of schedule and it will be done before mid-2024, in anticipation of the possible animation/VFX strike. We shall see.

still not gonna fully come back on tumblr yet but i just wanna say that i... finished my dreamworks tier list... i have now seen all 46 of this studio's movies--well, i guess technically not all, since i'm including the direct-to-video release joseph: king of dreams (which, despite only being at the top of the B tier on my list, i do think is pretty underrated and idk why nobody seems to give it a chance), but excluding the trollhunters movie because i've never seen the trollhunters show. maybe someday i will, but right now i'm just not interested.
so, this all just confirmed for me what i've thought for a long time already, which is that dreamworks is an incredibly weird and incredibly inconsistent studio. they've created some of the most beautiful and magical animated films of all time with releases like how to train your dragon, rise of the guardians, and prince of egypt, and some of the most absolute bottom of the barrel trash i've ever had to experience with things like antz, shark tale, and boss baby. and then they've also made a handful of very middle of the road movies, that i wouldn't really say i enjoy all that much, but which i don't think are necessarily bad either--this is the C tier on my list and i will be honest, the first shrek movie was originally in this tier for me because i'm just not that into it. i only moved it up a little because i felt like i had to admit that it is objectively a pretty good movie that was groundbreaking for its time and paved the way for shrek 2 and the puss in boots movies, all of which i love, to exist.
i guess i should share my final ranking, huh? before i do that i will also say that this ranking is absolutely not objective at all and is almost entirely based on my own personal enjoyment. like i said, i originally had shrek 1 in C tier lol. and i have trolls world tour in A tier because i just genuinely love a lot of things about it and very thoroughly have a fun time watching it. the trolls franchise as a whole is so much better than most dreamworks stuff and i will die on this hill. i also tried to rank things from best to worst within the tiers, but i'm very indecisive and some of these movies were hard to rank simply because i couldn't decide if they were closer to "okay" or "bad", or "bad" or "awful"... i could see some of my rankings maybe changing slightly if i thought about it a little more. for now i'm fine with where everything is, though.
anyway, here's my list that is sure to make at least one person want to yell at me lol:
Tumblr media
so, to break it down, my top 5 favorite dreamworks movies are:
Prince of Egypt
Rise of the Guardians
How to Train Your Dragon
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
How To Train Your Dragon 2
(i feel so bad that spirit: stallion of the cimarron got pushed out of the top 5... puss in boots: the last wish just existing + me rewatching HTTYD 2 and remembering how much i love it made that inevitable. but hey, it's still top tier.) and my top 5 least favorite dreamworks movies, starting with the least terrible one, are:
The Boss Baby
Turbo
Shark Tale
Antz
Spirit Untamed
(i watched these movies all out of order and for the longest time i thought nothing would dethrone shark tale as the worst of the worst, but i really did hate antz and spirit untamed that much, which surprised me lmao)
again, if i called your favorite movie bad, that really just means it's not enjoyable to me personally--i'm no professional film critic. also, i feel like the tiers came out sort of weirdly even, and i ended up with 21 movies in S-B tiers and 25 movies in C-F tiers, which really speaks to the inconsistency of dreamworks as a studio. i plan to try and keep up with their releases from now on, so i do hope that kung fu panda 4 & orion and the dark turn out well... but dreamworks keeps doing shit like releasing prince of egypt right after antz or putting out ruby gillman right after puss in boots: the last wish, so i guess we'll see! i'm just glad that i can currently say i've seen basically every movie from this ridiculous studio.

Why I think Universal is better than Disney recently in terms of animated movies
Tumblr media
I’m not going to lie when I’m saying this. I really think Disney has fumbled the ball big time when it came to their animated movies, which is really sad and shocking. Compared to the Universal movies, I found Disney’s movies to be less enjoyable as of late due to the fact that they weren’t taking high risks in terms of their animation style and storytelling. I really don’t know where to begin with this.
Before I elaborate any further, I just want you guys to know that this is personally my own personal tastes and preferences, so if you don’t like what I have to say, that’s fine as long as you don’t make it personal.
With that out of the way, let’s first look at this at a technological standpoint, and for this, I’m only looking at films released since 2020. In looking at the box office numbers, Disney, when combined with Pixar, has grossed at total of approximately $1.02 billion worldwide, while Universal, with their animation properties, Illumination and DreamWorks, have grossed a total of approximately $2.4 billion worldwide as of the release of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”. So, by one standpoint, Universal is beating Disney in terms of box office numbers.
Let’s now have a look at the Rotten Tomatoes scores. For here, I tried to find the average score by adding the Tomatometer and Audience Score numbers, then dividing it by two, and these are the results. Looking at the average Rotten Tomatoes scores, Disney and Pixar with eight films released since 2020 earned approximately 86.2% in response while Illumination and DreamWorks, also with eight films, earned approximately 79.5%. So, right away, Disney is proven to be better than Universal, but then let’s take the Tomatometer ratings out of the equation and look at just the audience scores. Disney and Pixar have earned 85% in audience reception while Illumination and DreamWorks earned 88% in audience reception, so from the Audience Scores, Universal averages more by just 3% ahead of Disney.
So, there you have it, from a technological standpoint, Universal is proving to perform much better with their audience at the box office than Disney is currently.
With that out of the way, let’s explain my reasonings as to why the Universal properties, Illumination and DreamWorks, are faring more better than Disney and Pixar combined.
I guess we can start with its storytelling. I’ve watched the eight Disney and Pixar movies released over the last two years, and I’ve notice some sort of uniformity when it comes to their stories, and that’s the fact that they usually stay in their comfort zones. Yeah, they may be feel good movies, sometimes sprinkled in with some good songs here and there, but they seemed to be a bit of the same, especially when I saw that a lot of these dealt with the same situations. “Encanto”: family matters. “Strange World”: family matters. “Onward”, “Luca”, “Turning Red”, they’ve all dealt with family matters without bringing something new to the table. It always deals with a member of the family, usually a child, dealing with issues of their family culture and wanting to deviate from it. Two actually come close to being good enough, but just fall short, those being “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Lightyear”. While I did enjoy them, I found them to be a bit generic. The only one movie that Disney has put out that could actually be considered a godsent would be Pixar’s “Soul”, with its message of living your life to the fullest while also providing great subversions and twists. It represents what Pixar could be, and the fact that the next movie they released after this showed an enormous dip in quality, it just goes to show how badly they dropped the ball big time.
Now, compared to Universal, in terms of DreamWorks, I found so much enjoyment and diversity with its stories, even some with the most basic of storylines. “Trolls: World Tour” seems to be a metaphor for musical generation wars, while also teaching kids the message of learning how to respect other people’s different cultural tastes and preferences. “The Boss Baby: Family Business” teaches the message of why parents are important, sprinkled in with some hilarious moments. “Spirit Untamed” retains the glory the original movie had while also being a faithful continuation of the Netflix series “Spirit: Riding Free”. “The Bad Guys” asks the question of “what if the bad guys were actually good for once” while it teaches kids that good or bad can live in anyone. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” gives a lesson on life and death and why we should continue fighting for the one life we have rather than just running away from death. Do you notice something here? That’s right - each one of these movies were completely different and weren’t telling the same story over and over without any changes.
The only misstep from the six movies DreamWorks had since 2020 was “The Croods: A New Age”, which felt a bit generic as it had that “family matters” aspect while also making the viewing experience completely unbearable, because who would want to see families bickering for 70 minutes on end?
Oh, and let’s not forget the two Illumination films released in the 2020s so far - “Sing 2″ and “Minions: The Rise of Gru”. These two movies represent how good world building could be, as it expands more on the world of both the “Sing” and “Despicable Me” franchises while also retaining the integrity of the characters they have established. And guess what? Each told their own story as well, with “Sing 2″ delivering a story with a message of how running away could be detrimental to your life, while “Minions: The Rise of Gru” made the bold move to tell the origin story of a supervillain, albeit done in the traditional style of the “Despicable Me” films. And believe me, I think that was a much better story than “Cruella”, which - guess what - was also made by Disney during its massive declining period.
And while Illumination still retained their old animation style, albeit a bit more refined and updated due to the evolving technology, DreamWorks experienced more with blending traditional cel animation elements with CGI, as evident with “Spirit Untamed”, “The Bad Guys”, and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”. I really like this new style that they’re trying out, and I think that with a few more films where they could experiment with this, they could take the medium of computer animated movies to the next level. And in the case of “Spirit Untamed” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, the scenery is so beautiful it actually feels like you’re looking at a painting. The former had wonderful pastels and eye catching images that make you feel like you could be there, especially during a scene where Lucky has a dream of intercepting the bandit’s train. When it got to that dream sequence, the animation feels like it had been taking notes from Studio Ghilbi’s style of animation, as the images of the horses moving across the water with its dazzling reflections reminded me of the scene from “Spirited Away” where Chihiro and No-Face stand at a train station nestled in the middle of a huge body of water waiting for the train they needed to get on. The latter continues that trend, taking those wonderful pastels and creating an elaborate and wonderful scenery of the Dark Forest, which acts a pocket dimension that changes its style, terrain, and landscape depending on who holds the map, and the fact that they put so much time and effort to place in elements of each of the characters that were holding the map, from Puss’ treacherous landscape to Perrito’s childlike and cute environment, the people behind the scenes knew what they were doing - they were, again, taking a basic concept on paper and trying to see what opportunities and subversions they could come up with while also keeping it fresh.
But when I look at Disney’s style of animation... the way I could put it is that it’s good, but it could’ve been so much better. Most of what I’ve seen just seems to be a bit of the same old fantasy elements - which is good, but then it just starts to get generic after a while, and it clearly shows when I watched “Strange World” for the first time. I seriously think that, given its comic book style, they would try a style more akin to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, which hits all the notes in blending the comic book illustrations with the computer animation. But no, instead it’s just the same old animation style that just felt really tiring after a while. Another major disappointment was “Lightyear”, which I thought was going to have a style more akin to 90s science fiction movies released at the time like “Event Horizon” and “Star Trek: First Contact”, but instead it looks way too modern like, which contradicts the entire beginning spiel of “This is that movie prompted Andy to buy a Buzz Lightyear toy.” Given that “Toy Story” took place in 1995, the style should’ve been era-appropriate to that time, which is a huge missed opportunity. Also, there doesn’t seem to be a bit of variety with the pastels of each landscape and scenery, as it’s always the same fantasy aspect with its bold colors, which doesn’t help the fact that each one of these are fantasy movies. The only other movie that I could think of that offers something fresh on the table was, again, “Soul”, which, while it does have the bold fantasy colors in the “Great Before”, it really shines with the photorealistic animation combined with the exaggerated character designs. And yet, I’m baffled why Pixar went from this to a more generic animation style that looks like it belongs in a Blue Sky movie, which is probably the rudest thing I’ve said about their style of filmmaking, but when I compared this to movies released during what I call the Golden Era of Pixar from 1995 to 2010... there’s literally no comparison at all. Pixar seems to be out of it as of late, as is Disney’s main animation studio.
And then, there’s the characters of each movie. When I looked at what Disney had to offer in terms of characters versus what Universal has... I was really shocked to see such a huge gap in quality in between the two. The characters from Illumination and DreamWorks seemed to be more enjoyable and more hilarious with each joke that they crack, especially in the most comedic films like “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru”. In the case of “Trolls World Tour”, “Sing 2″, and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, they also kept the integrity of the characters from their first outings and fleshed them out a bit more. Queen Poppy learns to listen to her people first rather than just blindly admitting that what she is doing is for the best interests of everyone. Buster Moon grew to fight for what he thinks is right. Puss grew to become less arrogant and also face death boldly when the time comes, not just to run away with a granted wish for more lives just so that he could show off more. There’s a lot I could say about them, but to put it shortly, all of them seemed to be fleshed out and three-dimensional.
Now, let’s look at Disney’s characters... and boy, is it heartbreaking for me to say that they are completely generic in comparison. Almost all of the characters that I’ve seen are very archetypical and are not really that fleshed out by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn’t help that five of these were all dealing with family issues, and in all of those aforementioned movies, they had a parent or a sibling controlling what to do and what not to do, and a child or another member question their way of thinking, going out of their way to show a little bit of rebellious nature. There seems to be no variety when it comes to their characters since they all just want them to be exactly the same, including Buzz Lightyear! It felt really shocking that Buzz Lightyear, of all characters that Pixar could majorly mess up, would be given a really generic treatment to make him look more like a generic hero in a science fiction movie, and probably the biggest mistake Pixar could ever do. And once again, “Soul” seemed to be sole exception - no pun intended - because Joe Gardener and 22 both underwent big character arcs that transformed them more than just being the same generic musician and the same generic rebellious soul. Joe learns that having a spark doesn’t mean having a talent, but just enjoying life in general, while 22, after experiencing almost a full day in Joe’s body, started to appreciate living life on Earth and became more interested in finding her own spark. And do I have to remind you about the massive leap of quality between the characters in “Soul” and the characters in “Luca”? All in all, I found Disney’s characters to be really forgettable.
In conclusion, it seems shameful for me to talk so harshly about Disney. They’ve made so many great films before, whether it’s live action or animated. They’re the ones I turn to whenever I have a bad day or I want to remember the memories of watching the Pixar movies on DVD with the fantastic main menus. Everyone grew up with Disney at one point of their lives, and seeing what they have become now... calling it a “fall from grace” seems to be a understatement. Yes, I did find some enjoyment in them, but they really didn’t compare to the powerhouse they used to be. Right now, Universal, under the auspices of Illumination and DreamWorks, seemed to be executing much more better in terms of storytelling and animation style while also having memorable characters. Believe me when I say that I had more enjoyment in watching “The Boss Baby: Family Business” than I did watching “Lightyear”. Yeah, “Lightyear” was good, but it always felt a bit generic, and the twists they try to make are considered a bit nonsensical and arbitrary to me, whereas “The Boss Baby: Family Business” took massive risks in telling what is otherwise a basic story and just delivered in making what I considered to be a favorite guilty pleasure of mine, while also executing the twists really well and far more smartly.
And that, in the grand scheme of things, is why I think Universal is better than Disney in terms of their animated movies - Universal seems to care more about storytelling and making the most outlandish ideas work on screen while pushing the boundaries of their animation style, creating out of a place of experimentation, creativity, and passion, while Disney just seems to care more about making products to go on the shelves of Targets and Walmarts around America. They always say that Disney is the apex of the animation studio, but I honestly think that has gotten to their heads.
There was a quote that Kurt Russell, as Herb Brooks, says in the movie “Miracle”, and that is this:
“This cannot be a team of common men, because common men go nowhere. You have to be uncommon.”
Disney has turned into the common men, and if they continue down this trend, they may as well go nowhere. It’s tragic to think that, but... here we are.

@puella-peanut tagged me into this, thanks :D
3 Ships:
SPN: Sabriel. I mean like, there are people who ship Sam and Gabriel and then there are people who are wrong ahahahha xD
No but seriously, their character beats mirror each other, they are little brothers who got forced into situations they don’t wanna be in. Besides, tho Sam and Dean are the protagonists, the writers favored Dean that he became de facto the main character. Gabriel is one of the very few characters in the whole series who paid primary attention to Sam. I dunno, i ticks me, every time I think of I am done with this fandom I get fond feelings over them
Cobra Kai: Lawrusso. Oh my fucking god with these karate trainwrecks xDD No but, they kinda compliment each other too. Neither of them is completely stable in the head, Johnny is more outwardly trash, but sometimes I am like, you know, Daniel is kinda sad sod too xD Plus admire balls to the walls lets ruin our lived over karate kinda attitude. Mach made in karate heaven, I mean, what are the changes of finding that person who is just equally as fucking wild about the special interest. Besides I started karate classes myself because of these motherfuckers.
Jago & Litefoot: Prof. Litefoot/Mr. Jago :D I man, what I can even say, other than list Chronoclasm and tell me Litefoot didn’t just like declare his love in action right there. Not mention the the triangle drama with vampire, couple shenanigans on the run or in another universe. Jago was crying when he though Litefoot was stuck in that snowglobe and giving a full I love you speech. Only reason thy might not be in the books as canon is the fact that they’re both Victorian idiots who can’t express their emotions right.
Last song? Kiss from a Rose by Seal. I’ve been listening the Soundtrack album for Batman Forever on repeat for couple weeks now, I dunno. Gives me the feels.
Last movie? I watched the Puss in Boots in theaters. That was quite honestly the best movie of the year, not gonna lie.
Currently consuming: I have some sugar free ginger soda I bought from post xmas sale.
Currently watching: I am in the middle of Sophmore year on D20′s Fantasy High, even though I know I am not even getting more content for my shipping feels xD
Currently reading: I got a vintage edition o Yrjö Kokko’s fairytale Pessi & Illusia about a little troll boy and a fairy and that’s a classic.
Currently craving: I just really want to eat all the sweet stuff, candy and chocolate and whatnot, but I am trying to be healthy so like. Suprssing those feels I guess.
Anyway, thanks for asking :D

non lyle ask (bc my blog has been de-lylified <//3)but like. okay theres a lot a to expain here but okay first point ik some poeple know the games 20 questions as a game where you just ask the person ur playing with 20 questions abt them so incase tht is u i am refering to 20 questions as in a game where one person thinks of an object/person/character and the other players ask 20 yes or no questions abt what theyre thinking of then guess what it is theyre thinking of but the thing abt me(+my sibling+my cousin) is that despite always calling it 20 questions we never like, limit the amnt of questions to 20 we just ask the person questions until we guess the right answer and basically since my cousin has been facetiming me nd my sibling a lot lately weve also been playing 20 questions a lot on ft and basically we all facetimed today we talked for a bit etc then my sibling had to leave to do smth (the call was like. in our groupchat so like they cld leave and join again rly easily etc) so i decided to play 20 questions w my cousin and we play for a while nd have fun etc but after a while i was like "yk what im going to think of puss in boots even though they havent seen the movie i talk abt him a lot so they shld b able to get it easily" and like. they asked like standard questions but they like. were not getting it like i tihnk they got tht it was a male animated character from a movie but when they asked if the movie was on netflix it got kinda cofnusing bc like the last wish isnt on netflix isnt on netflix but the first puss in boots and two shrek movies hes in (for some reason netflix uk only has the last two shrek films like shrek 1+2 arent on there but shrek 3+4 are ??? so thts weird) so i was like some of the movies hes in are not netflix but not all of them and they got rly cought up on that (in hindsight i shld have probably said to ignore tht aspect but i did not think tht in the moment ig) and also like another thing. the iconic "becuase singing killed my grandma" scene from trolls has become somewhat of an inside joke with us bc its fucking insane and hilarious and like a few times when playing 20 questions together one of us will jokingly be like "oh did singing kill their grandma?" etc and like my cousin started asking like oh did singing kill his grandma did he break his neck tapdancing once (bc of the guys who says my uncle broke his neck tapdancing once during that scene literally would say the most insane movie scene ever but weve been lyle lyle posting all day) and like haha v funny (it actually was p funny the bit has not gotten old yet) i kept being like no and i almost was like "he has never died while singing or dancing" but then i remembered his eighth death was right before he was abt to sing a song so didnt say that but i did say "he did not break his neck while tapdancing once!" and apparently i put an emphasis on the word once becuase my cousin started being like did he break his neck tapdancing twice did he break his next tapdancing three times and at once point i was just like "he has never broken his neck tapdancing!" so then they were like " did he break his neck singing once" and i was like "he has not *broken his neck* while singing" b he did die right before singing like i said and then my sibling rejoined the call and we explained what was going on to them we were playing 20 questions my cousin said they new it was a male character from an animated movie and i said "[cousin name] is asking if he specifically broke his neck while singing once so i have to say no" and then my sibling was like "oh its puss in boots" which is just. the most incredible thingg that my sibling got it from me just saying that but it took my cousin so long and then i explained tht puss' eighth death happened before he was going to sing a song but then he got crushed by a bell and said that he died "ernesto de la cruz style" but my cousin was still like " didnt that happen to that one guy in coco? hector- no it was ernesto" but anyway. very funny story from today i think love and light <3
AISHRIEHDJSJ I LOVEEEE UR SIBLING JOINING AND IMMEDIATELY GETTING IT SOO MUCHHHHH….. also literally when it happened alll i could think was ernesto de la cruz style like!!!!! thats what it issss😭
