Review: Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Cemetery Boys is an Own Voices story about Yadriel, a young trans teenager, who wants to become a brujo. Because his family and the other brujx firmly hold on to their traditions, Yadriel is denied as a brujo and thus takes it upon himself to prove them wrong, but when he accidentally summons the ghost of Julian Diaz and not his cousin, proving himself becomes far more difficult than he originally thought.

This book and these characters tore my soul apart and stitched it back together. I absolutely loved this story and not just because this is a Latinx book filled with Latinx characters and traditions, but because it shows just how difficult it can be to want to be seen and accepted for who you are.

The main character, Yadriel, is trans and gay and his family doesn't fully accept him. As much as I hate to say it, homophobia and transphobia are hugely embedded in the Latinx community. It's something that the older generations, and some of the newer, have a difficult time wanting to understand and that's something that we see with Yadriel and his family. They're so set on the old ways that they don't even consider the possibility that he can exist as himself. Later on in the story, we get to see his family realize how much they've hurt Yadriel and we even see his father outwardly and vocally support him, which is such an important moment for so many reasons. I think Thomas does a wonderful job showing that it's possible to appreciate tradition and still allow room for change and differing experiences. Not only do we see this development with Yadriel's family, but we also see it with Yadriel. A lot of the story really delves into his own inner turmoil with accepting himself and wanting the people he cares for to accept him as well, but that's not something that's explicitly clear at first. It's explored the deeper we dive into the story. I absolutely loved all the characters. Maritza is by far my favorite. She's witty and funny and super supportive of Yadriel. She's the type of person I would have wanted to be friends with in high school. Also her comebacks had me ROLLING. Her relationship with Yadriel is absolutely top tier. Not only do we get los primos who always get in trouble together, we also get a super loving and supportive relationship. I would die for these two. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON JULIAN DIAZ. This boy, I freakin' swear. He's a soccer dude. That's all you need to know and you'll know. This boy constantly gets into trouble and has anger problems, but he's funny, supportive, and protective. He acts like he doesn't give a shit about anything, but he's definitely ride-or-die for those he cares about and we get to see all these pieces of him throughout the story. Not only is this boy a joker, but he's smooth af. I mean...

"¿Me dejas robarte un beso?" he said softly, in the most agonizingly beautiful Colombian accent Yadriel had ever heard. It was pure and melodic, like a song. Ch. 20, p. 274 This boy had me rooting for him. I just wanted a HEA for him and Yadriel, spoiler, they get one. You'll just have to read to find out how. Another thing I really liked about this book is that each character introduced also has something they're dealing with, be it an abusive household, the loss of a parent, homelessness, differing values and morals, the need to be accepted, etc., and I think Thomas does a really good job showing that what we see and think we know isn't always the truth. I also think recognizing that these issues exist is important, especially for young readers who may be experiencing similar situations. Representation will always matter. In terms of representation, Latinx culture was heavily embedded in everything, which I absolutely LOVED. It felt like being with my own friends and family and I love that people who are unfamiliar with these traditions get to see a piece of it. I also loved that Spanish was incorporated into the dialogue. For people who are unfamiliar with the language, I could see how not having the english translations could make things a little difficult to understand since some meanings could be lost in translation, but that's what Google is for. I think this was a really great example that shows what being bilingual is like and how much our language means to us.

I also appreciate that there were a lot of LGBTQ+ Latinx characters. In the words of Julian, "Queer folks are like wolves...we travel in packs." I loved that Thomas showed there's no one way to be gay, everyone has their own experience, and there will always be people in your corner who will love you, support you, and appreciate you despite.

In terms of the writing and the plot, this book was fairly fast-paced. It took place over the course of a few days approaching Dia de Muertos. I don't think there were any areas that dragged on. If anything, I wanted more interactions between characters, especially Julian and his friends and then Julian and Yadriel. I really hope Thomas continues with this world and these characters because I NEED MORE. As for the storyline, I absolutely LOVED it. Those twists were so good and basically the worst thing you could think that could happen happened, which made me feel so many things all at once. I was relieved but angry and ngl, I cried a few tears, but in my opinion, what happened needed to happen. I ended up guessing part of the major twist toward the end, which just goes to show how great Thomas's foreshadowing was throughout the book. Major plot points were only predictable if you knew what you were looking for. I, for one, really enjoy guessing what's going to happen next so I really enjoyed this aspect. All the major events in the story also made sense and were pretty much resolved. There wasn't anything that stuck out too much.

Overall, I really enjoyed everything about this book, especially the characters. I would 100% die for them and I will definitely be reading everything Aiden Thomas publishes ever. Read this book.

“owning the land is equal to owning the sky and the wind.”

Premise (spoilers for the first episode and the existence of a major character).

in the pseudo-Bronze Age, two races of people (the sarams and the neanthals) live in an uneasy co-existence. the sarams want an alliance for the neanthal’s lands so that they can farm and mine, the neanthals are like lol we don’t need any of that because we actually have survivalist skills so keep your agriculture you nerds b y e.

the leader of the saram is Not Having That, and sends an envoy (asa hon) to allegedly act as a diplomat. what she actually does is unknowingly carries a plague that wipes out a huge chunk of the neanthals. because that is not enough, the leader sends his son (tagon) to wrap up the rest of this genocide.

asa hon is betrayed and upset and doesn’t return to the sarams. instead, she shacks up with a surviving neanthal named ragaz and they have spoilers twin boys spoilers, hybrids known as igutu. based on Prophecy, any children born under the blue flame comet are Destined to bring calamity. so, doom babies. they are two doom babies.

after killing ragaz, tagon snatches one of the babies For Reasons, and asa hon flees with the other

flashforward about a decade.

the neanthals are extinct OR ARE THEY we get a pretty Quick understanding of who tagon is as a human as he’s re-introduced drinking out of one of their skulls before being surrounded by his hypemen who chant his name Gaston style. he’s joined by taeahla, and they are a Match Made in Hell. it’s quickly revealed that taeahl is raising the other twin baby, who is kept hidden because he’s igutu. and, like, tagon’s famous because he killed all of the neanthal, so having one of their hybrid babies is ngl

asa hon makes it to a land beyond the saram’s influence, where she and eunseom come across a tribe called wahan. they’re lead by a ten-year-old tanya, who had a dream that eunseom would arrive. which is a big deal, because sarams can’t dream. it turns out tanya was also born on Blue Comet Doom Prophecy Day. asa hon dies from the injuries she obtained saving her son, and eunseom is raised by the wahan tribe. it’s a very idyllic existence for them.

until tagon and his men invade in a manifest-destiny-realness bid to capture slaves and conquer land and ruin wahan’s coachella festival before enslaving all of them and bringing what survives of the tribe to arthdal.

the plot then centers around eunseom trying to rescue the wahan tribe, the wahan tribe trying to survive arthdal, and something about gods being reborn, political backstabbing, a church cult being absolute dicks, and a lot of interchangeable evil old men

it’s a fucking awesome show.

eunseom’s been a part of the wahan tribe since he was ten, but everyone (especially him) is aware he’s Different From The Rest of the Reindeer. the only one who treats him the same is tanya, and it’s clear these two are joined at the hip. he has dreams of being locked away in a tower, has a bunch of ~strange~ ideas like trying to ride horses, and is totes crushing on the soon-to-be village wise woman. once the wahan village is attacked, he makes it his mission to save the tribe and his One True Love tanya

pure. does not think things through. just wants to believe in people, god damn it.

my wife daughter of the wahanian version of “crazy old maurice,” and apprentice to the Great Mother of the Tribe. as another child born under the Doom Comet, she’s been known as the Prophesied One since birth (the One Who Will Break the Shell). we meet her as she’s struggling to follow in the Great Mother’s footsteps, and her journey is grounded in uncovering her mystical destiny. naive and a fish out of water, she leads her people in surviving arthdal after their enslavement

moves like jagger. center of a reverse harem. by her pretty flower crown she can end you

this bitch but also that bitch. almost single-handedly responsible for the genocide of the neanthals, tagon’s grown into the leader of an army that is the definition of ride-or-die for him. he has a 100% approval rating in arthdal due to defeating the neanthal, defeating the ago tribe, and defeating the will to live for the thousands of slaves he supplies for arthdal’s terrible economic system. he starts the series off with Pure Intentions, in that he wants to rule but he wants to do it by The Love of The People. because that works out well for people who habitually wear black cloaks

poster child #1 for arthdal’s fantastic hair products for men, will smirk you to death, you feel sorry for him a lot and you’re like why?? but then yeaaah, can only stare in heart eyes at his partner in subterfuge...

taeahla

MY WIFE said partner in subterfuge. i cannot spell her fucking name ever. her and tagon have been Not Together for over ten years. she’s the heiress to the hae tribe, who are known for their inventions and are the only tribe that knows how to smith bronze into weapons. therefore she’s hot shit. and also just hot. she seems like the character You’re Not Going to Like but she became one of my favorites after the first episode.

she wants to help tagon in his ambitions, but she also v much wants to see his ambitions help herself. her and tagon made an Oath to never sacrifice their survival for the other and that’s the most metal thing i’ve ever heard. she wears couture. would get a pre-nup. can and will fuck you up. and she also raises the Hidden Igutu Twin Doom Baby...SPOILERS

saya

so at this point you’re probably thinking a few things: this show needs more beautiful hair and pro fashion sense, a complete shit stirrer, and a morally ambiguous pretty boy.

well well well

saya is eunseom’s twin brother, although neither of them know about the other’s existence. because of their neanthal blood, they can see snapshots of each other’s lives in their dreams. as his existence would lead to death, and would DEFINITELY garner tagon some bad PR, saya’s been locked away in his princess tower for the majority of his life. he views tagon and taeahla as his father and mother, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

daddy’s boy. wants to kill birds for fun. has the hots for the girl who can teach him how to kill birds for fun. surprisingly religious???

it’s very much an Ensemble show, which means if you’re only watching for 1-2 characters you’re likely going to get frustrated. there’s several plot lines going on

WORLD BUILDING. im a huge nerd for world building and the lore in this makes me so happy.

i love?? all the leads???? like normally i get frustrated with the second leads in dramas, but i genuinely love all of them and was interested in all of their stories. this show has an incredible cast/set of actors and they bring it home

Black Eagles Route

Finally, with a certain level of dread in my heart, I completed Crimson Flower

Why I chose Black Eagles (specifically Crimson Flower): I had already completed Azure Moon and Verdant Wind, so it was just a matter of picking between Crimson Flower or Silver Snow. I figured it’d be best to just knock out Crimson Flower, since I still needed Hubert, Jertiza, and Edelgard’s supports.

Who Was My Dancer: Sylvain! I kept my recruits for this route only to characters I needed to complete supports, and then also Sylvain, because his aesthetic sense just seemed to jive with the Black Eagles. As a dancer, he did okay, but I think I much prefer him on a horse. However, his dancing was crucial to killing Dimitri before Dedue turned into a beast, and a few other pivotal moments. I just don’t think Sylvain has the magical firepower I like with my dancers (It should be known I don’t typically use the dancer character at all in other FE games, but I really enjoy the magic-utilty they have in 3H)

What Paired Endings Did I Get:

Edelgard & Hubert (I actually feel really bad for Hubert; it wasn’t my intention to do this)

Linhardt & Hapi

Dorothea & Petra

Jeritza & Bernadetta

Ferdinand & Mercedes

Not as many paired endings as usual because I really only cared about filling out my missing supports

Who Did Byleth Marry: Sylvain. Totally, totally not who I meant to marry; my intention was Yuri, but then I never used Yuri. And I just have a soft spot for Sylvain. I stand behind my decision.

Which Edelgard Do I prefer?: Purely on aesthetics, post-timeskip Edelgard is p hot, ngl, but I find her to be more intolerable because of how hard they push that weird sort of gap moe waifu bait with her. So I guess pre-timeskip, even if that’s not much better.

General Thoughts: I tried, oh so hard, to go in with an open mind about Edelgard and the other route exclusive characters. Edelgard leaves about 0 impressions in the other routes, as far as being an antagonist goes, but from the opening chapters on my first playthrough, I found her to be manipulative, condescending, and perhaps a bit immature. And yeah, she’s all of those things and more.... But Hubert, Hubert I love and I’m so mad that I can see the appeal of Hubert x Ferdinand now. My only point of contention remains the fact that in canon they remain subservient to her in their paired ending.

I also went out of my way to kill every single named character throughout the route, and it was both satisfying and heartbreaking. That Dimitri and Dedude death scene, Seteth’s shouts as I struck down Flayn, the dialogue between Sylvain as he fought against his childhood friends.... so good.

The Black Eagles Characters:

I did almost all the supports possible, sans route exclusives and DLC on my first playthrough, but I’ve yet to hash out my general feelings about the Black Eagles.

Edelgard: Plain and simple, I do not stan Edelgard. I found a lot of her behavior more reasonable if she was 13 pre-timeskip and 18 post-timeskip, but a 23 year old being so cringey and unaware of the greater political climate (Hubert regularly does things behind her back that she doesn’t even notice or care to notice, while complaining that Hubert makes her work for ambitions rather than letting her eat sweets or stare at the sky all day, ugh) is just unappealing as hell. The whole sequence where I had two opportunities to call her fear of rats “cute” was super off-putting, and the don’t get me started on her drawing Byleth fanart. She’s constantly looking for affirmation from Byleth (despite insisting she doesn’t need praise in lecture), while being manipulative and condescending to everyone else. Her calling Lysithea “good girl” when Lysithea is 20/21, only three years younger, and an entire inch taller than Edelgard post-timeskip is pure cringe. Also the name Black Eagles Strike Force is an awful name and I’m not sorry I told her as much.

Hubert: I’m torn on whether or not Hubert is my favorite Black Eagle. I really enjoy devoted servant characters, and I find him more endearing because Edelgard doesn’t deserve him. He’s so visually unappealing (though, not as bad as I find Lorenz to be) and weird, but I respect that about him.

Ferdinand: Sweet, dumb Ferdinand. I love him; his supports are a delight and I am consistently charmed by how sweet he is in his supports. I prefer him in other routes than how he has to behave in Crimson Flower, but what can ya do. Truly, the noblest of nobles

Linhardt: I’ve heard mixed opinions about Linhardt, but I for one like him. He’s a fair-weather sort of guy who only cares about a few things, and I support that. He’s just strange and intelligent and a dry sense of humor I can appreciate.

Caspar: This moron, I love him. Caspar is the one person I’d expect to follow Edelgard unquestioningly because he just doesn’t have enough brain cells to do otherwise. I think he’s funny, even if his tone-deaf screaming in eagerness to kill and conquer Fodlan grew taxing.

Dorothea: I like Dorothea alright; I think she has a lot of personality in her supports, but she’s not really the sort of character I find especially endearing or relatable. Nothing wrong with that.

Petra: A great girl! I find her manner of speech endearing, and I’m personally grateful that didn’t try to do some sort of accent for her that’s 1:1 for the real world. I was a bit put-off by how gungho she is with siding with Edelgard and dismantling Fodlan, but ya know, what choice does she have a political prisoner shoved into the black hole that surrounds Edelgard?

Bernadetta: People complain that Sylvain doesn’t mature post-timeskip, but Bernedetta still does that awful screeching and being a recluse routine up until the very end. I don’t like her or find her funny, but I do enjoy the sort of moral relativism she employs. Her supports with Yuri made me feel exceptionally sorry for Yuri.

Jeritza: His voice and cadence irritates me to no end, but he was enjoyable as a unit, at least. I think his “personality” or “two personalities” is troupey to the max, and his supports with Byleth were especially off-putting. I feel like if you’re going to make a murder-happy character like Jeritza, especially one with like a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde thing going on, it needs to be way more campy or bombastic.

I could honestly write a bunch more, but it’d mostly be me bitching about specific cringe-inducing moments with Edelgard that I’m sure other people who aren’t aggressively stanning her have brought up. If you like Edelgard, good for you, but I’m of the opinion that she’s a snake, and not even a clever or tactful one. Crimson Flower is so painful with how obvious it is with it’s Edelgard-pandering that it took me out of the game multiple times. All their routes have their flaws, but I guess the last (and only) animated sequence for CF was pretty dope, at least.

oh geez. god. I actually really feel for Mingjue here ;____; swearing he’d protect all these people and then (as far as he knows) still being unable to, with himself being the one to make it out after deliberately setting out to avoid that. ouch :(

...mmmm, okay. I get why they want to have a Single Cinematic Moment for Huaisang’s big realisation, but... the way that played out didn’t really work for me. I find it kind of hard to buy that his memory would be that clear and specific for an event ?however many months-years ago? that was incredibly emotional and chaotic in the moment? maybe have that scene as a representation of an aha! moment that clinches his suspicions a year or two down the line after uncovering a few other pieces of evidence that suggest there’s something wrong with NMJ’s death, but. I dunno. I think I would have preferred that final scene being something more indicative of long-growing suspicions, tracking down pieces of research, music study, etc., as opposed to !!!suddenly everything falls into place!!!!

so hm. final verdict.... I suppose yes, I do have more sympathy now for Huaisang’s position! esp if, as it seems, they did have a much better and more supportive relationship as children, and that’s predominantly what NHS is remembering when he mourns his brother. (stillllll not thrilled with how he went about his revenge plot, but that’s a hypocrisy for me to deal with another day~)

Logic aka Danielle, “Dan” for short:

the butch i strive to be.

short hair. she’s the only one that doesn’t have long hair and an undercut and everyone was #shook when she cut her hair.

button ups and skinny jeans and flannels for days.

seems stone cold, is like 75% stone cold. the other 25% is caring for the others and being really excited about knowledge.

she strives for knowledge and, tbh, will do what it takes to prove to others that she’s smart.

the other sides have had heated arguments about whether or not she’s a ravenclaw or a slytherin because, on the one hand, she loves knowledge and loves learning, but on the other, will do anything to get ahead of people if they’re cheating.

level headed.

she will never admit it, but she actually does care a lot for the other sides. the one she fights the most with is Hypochondria/Jamison but, even then, she at least makes sure the the other side is okay. she’s not good with emotions and has a hard time empathizing, so her way of showing that she cares is bringing you well-balanced meals and water bottles.

the other sides know that she cares.

can talk about english literature for days on end. she is also an avid lover of philosophy.

she has her planner for the sides as a whole, such as appointments coming up and important dates and stuff that they all need to do to make sure that everything goes well. it’s super neat and color coded and everything.

her personal planner??? it’s a hot mess.

has been known to stay up until three-A.M. thinking about how free-will is an illusion. this is typically when Anxiety/James comes in and is like, “yeah, you’re right, but that doesn’t mean that everything is meaningless” and they just chill together for a couple hours

despite what literally everyone thinks, Dan and Creativity/Taylor actually get along the best. Taylor spends a lot of time dreaming of fantasies, yeah, but Dan helps to keep them in check and Taylor lets it happen. also, Logic and Creativity working together helps make for realistic yet fun writing pieces. they’re the #besties and literally no one expected it at all.

Dan and Morality/Skylar have some problems they need to work through because Dan has a hard time empathizing, and sometimes even sympathizing, and Skylar is always feeling everything and feeling everything So Much. this has caused Skylar to lash out at Dan and then promptly burst into tears. things are getting better, tho. they’re working on it.

Dan and Hypochondria/Jamison fight a lot. well, not really Fight. just, Jamison starts telling everyone that they’re dying of [insert disease] and starts to freak everyone out and, therefore, starts to get even more freaked out and Dan has to step in and be like, “we’re not dying” but Jamison is always like, “and what evidence do you have on that?” and Dan.exe has stopped working.

Dan’s arc would be letting her walls down.

Creativity aka Taylor:

a bit of a beauty queen.

she is always in dresses and heels or, at the very least, a super put together outfit.

she says it’s because she likes making good impressions. really, it’s because she relies on her looks for people to like her because talk about distorted confidence.

she likes how she looks and she likes the content she puts out, but she doesn’t really like herself. but we can’t angst yet, it’s too early for that.

despite typically being pretty proud about what she puts out, she is very defensive about criticism. she’ll show you something she wrote and you could be like, “oh, it’s really cool!!! why did this specific part happen, tho?” and she’s angrily rewriting the entire thing. or angrily defending why her way is the best way.

Dan typically has to step in and be like, “of course some critics can be harsh, but not every criticism you receive is a personal attack”

Taylor hates when her best friend is right but she legit cannot argue with the physical embodiment of logic. well, she could, but that’s exhausting.

she would never do anything to hurt someone. but if she’s like, “hmm, i want to write a dragon fight, but it needs to be realistic so people like it,” guess what? there’s a dragon now. everyone’s screaming. Taylor simultaneously regrets everything and nothing.

she has the habit of recreating fictional characters for fanfiction purposes. sides meet sides. it’s meta af. everyone is confused.

she’s not allowed to watch horror movies because suddenly every room in the house has a killer in it and her, Skylar, and James are sobbing hysterically while Dan has to deal with it. Jamison comes along for the sake of watching Dan be like “YOU DON’T MAKE ANY SENSE” to fictional murderers and monsters.

despite her sometimes abruptness and her want to get her way, she really does love the other sides with all her heart. Dan is her ride or die, Skylar not only helps with writing emotional scenes but also is a great shoulder to lean on, her and James actually don’t conflict that much, and even her and Jamison get along, though that friendship is watched with caution by everyone else.

she easily gets trapped in the fantasy world. she imagines worlds where there is a girlfriend to love, friends who always click with her, a world where everything works out.

she has a hard time liking herself because, yeah she likes how she looks, and she thinks the content she helps make is good, but what about herself? she’s worried that she’s not actually that interesting.

there isn’t really a side that she doesn’t get along with. though, James did once call her a brat after Taylor got really defensive about constructive criticism. Taylor got real quiet real fast and, after a huge amount of awkward silence, the two immediately started apologizing. most don’t expect Creativity and Anxiety to get along, and at one point they fought more than usual, but Dan was the one to come in and help find a bridge between Taylor’s dreams and James’ reality.

Taylor basically follows Dan along for everything and anything. if you have Dan, Taylor typically isn’t too far behind.

however, she did once get into a nasty fight with both Dan and James because, as she puts it, they “fucked up a chance at love”

Taylor and Skylar get along super well. they’re both sensitive, yes, but Taylor is a lot more level headed then Skylar so she can help her out when Skylar is having a hard time. and Skylar can help her write more emotional things and also is super good for emotional support.

Taylor and Jamison literally aren’t allowed to be around each other, just the two of them, for too long. leave them alone for five minutes, and they’re both sobbing hysterically because they think they’re dying and they have already worked out how it’s happening.

Taylor’s arc would be learning to love herself.

Morality aka Skylar:

comfy leggings and sweaters with sweater paws all day every day.

so sensitive. so emotional. please help her.

her mood changes super easily. one morning, she’ll be bouncing off the walls. that afternoon, she’s a bit irritable and has a hard time mixing with the others. that night, she’s an empty, upset mess.

her catchphrase might as well be, “i’m feeling everything and i don’t know what to do”

she’s incredibly sensitive and is easily hurt. she hates the fact that an offhand comment or a joke can hurt her so much.

she wants to be there for everyone but she sometimes has a hard time with it because she feels like no one’s there for her.

the other sides are all there for her, or at least they try to be. Skylar just has a hard time with stuff like that.

a “broken heart” physically pains her to the point where she can barely move without crying.

she can be a bit of a doormat occasionally because she has a hard time standing up for herself.

and the one time she did stand up for herself was... it was a mess:

her and Dan were arguing because Skylar was having a bad day and Dan couldn’t understand that and couldn’t understand why Skylar was feeling so bad when nothing was technically wrong

and Dan probably said something about how Skylar should just try to be rational and Skylar just. snapped.

she started yelling and cursing a bit and basically seething with rage at Dan and perhaps a few not-nice words were thrown by her and everyone watching (which is literally everyone) just freezes because they’ve seen Skylar be happy, sad, irritable, excited, etc etc etc, but they’ve never seen her enraged.

they all silently agreed it was quite heartbreaking, actually.

when Skylar was finally finished, she just froze for a second and then instantly burst into tears because of how awful she felt.

that day, Dan and Skylar finally sat down and had a talk that lasted for hours because they both wanted to start seeing eye to eye.

Skylar considers all the sides her friends, even Dan, but she gets really sad sometimes because she feels like she’s the least liked.

they all love Skylar tho. give this side some love. pls.

even though Skylar is quick to fall for James and Jamison’s anxious thoughts, she is the first one to go and comfort them. while Dan talks logically with them, Skylar is the one to go and make sure that they’re comfortable and okay and give them both big hugs.

Skylar’s arc wouldn’t be accepting that she feels everything, it would be learning how to properly handle them.

Anxiety and Hypochondria aka James and Jamison aka “the twins”:

even though all the sides look the same, even Dan with her short hair, it is near impossible to tell James and Jamison apart

their hair is always up in either a pony tail or a messy bun. they’re both always wearing ripped leggings or jeans and a hoodie or a sweater. it’s always in dark colors, such as black or dark blue or dark green.

and, yes, they always end up matching. they don’t mean for it to happen. but when they are literally two sides of anxiety, it’s kinda hard for them to not think the same on some aspects.

the only way to tell them apart is that Jamison looks incredibly sickly. she’s super pale, super frail. she has gaunt eyes and is shaking a lot and basically looks like she’s about to keel over at any moment.

James fights with Jamison a lot because Jamison’s hypochondriac thoughts fuels James’ general anxious thoughts, but she would also fight anyone who hurts her sister.

James is a bit insecure about her name because it’s not a typical “”“girl’s”””” name, nor has she ever heard it used in a gender-neutral sense, but she at least learns to accept it.

if you call her Jamie though, she will deck you in the face.

James, despite her dark clothing and being slightly rough around the edges, isn’t actually that mean.

she used to be super present and super agitated all the time and super quick to fight literally all the sides, but as time passed and things calmed down, so did she. she works a lot with Dan to help see reality better because, now that she isn’t as heightened, she wants to see how she could work on her anxious thoughts.

actually, it’s the other sides that tend to freak her out. Dan makes her think about whether or not she’s really smart. Taylor makes her wonder if she’s actually good at anything. Skylar makes her think that all her friends hate her. and Jamison aka Hypochondria is obvious. basically, whatever they fear, she ends up fearing.

but she’s doing better than she has in years. which is nice.

but Jamison is an entirely different ball game.

James and Jamison both formed after Dan, Taylor, and Skylar were already there. once they all found out that their purposes were Anxiety and Hypochondria, everyone was super confused as to why they wouldn’t just be one side. why separate an anxiety disorder from anxiety???

and then they learned that Jamison’s hypochondriac thoughts are worse than anything James could think of.

your chest could hurt for a couple seconds and Jamison has already told everyone that you’re dying and that the hospital can’t help you now.

her more... morbid thoughts tend to get incredibly upsetting for everyone.

she doesn’t mean to be like that. she doesn’t mean to scare everyone and to make everyone feel sick.

going to Jamison’s room makes everyone take on different symptoms for illnesses.

but all these anxious thoughts just... happen and she can’t control it.

the only side she really argues with is James because anxiety + anxiety = a whole lot of bad, but besides that, the other sides don’t fight with her purely because she’s more scared than any of them.

yeah, Dan finds it frustrating when she finds Jamison crying with the other sides and they’re all freaking out because they think they’re dying, but she can’t even yell because Jamison is by far the most panicked one.

so, basically, all the sides, while frustrated, work to at least calm her down.

WebMD and Mayoclinic and any other website that will list symptoms are banned. Jamison doesn’t even have a phone/laptop because of this.

she easily appears and disappears. there have been times when the sides haven’t seen her for weeks, sometimes even months. and then, all of a sudden, she’s back and her room is taking up the most space.

♕ SHIPPING INFO.

WHAT IS YOUR OTP FOR YOUR CHARACTER?: i used to have a few really great ships for sawyer but now those writers have moved on from rp so i'm just down to one, but tbh its still the best. @tcughguy being basically the love of sawyer's life ?? like i don't think anyone has brought sawyer out of her shell so much like tim does, he just accepts her when she never thought anyone could do that completely, so yeah, they're end game and she's basically gonna spend the rest of her life with him. and since i'm having something of a rewrite of sawyer's relationships prior to tim, since i still used to keep those old relationships as 'canon', sawyer's romantic history before tim is something of a clean slate. i have a few headcanons for relationships sawyer could have had, or a wishlist of sorts for shipping, so i'm looking forward to getting some more ships.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO WRITE WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?: since i'm starting a new with sawyer's ships aside from the one with tim, i'm pretty open to writing most things. i like the big romantic ships with plenty of drama, but not necessarily drama caused between the two people. life just tends to shaft sawyer so often the drama kind of creates itself. i like realistic ships tho, bc honestly sawyer needs the kind of guy who can both keep up with her but also bring her down a peg when she needs it, so i like a rounded ship where they love each other, support each other and ground each other too. sawyer having a reputation as a monster fucker is important to me so i'm all here for inter-species shipping, ships with age gaps, angsty ships, fluffy ships, long term and short term ships, random ass dates and sawyer just sleeping around. i'm also down for shipping with canons and ocs. the only things i won't ship are those concerning underage relationships, incest or abusive relationships.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?: sawyer has a bit of a thing for older men, it's probably down to her daddy issues, but i wouldn't recommend telling her that's the case. she's always had a crush on da/vid bo/wie and ma/rk ham/ill pretty much from day one, and still does btw. i think she's just always kinda dated older men ?? she doesn't often date people who are close to her in age but she's had the odd exception here and there. she doesn't particularly go after people who are older than her or dismisses those the same age as her, she just has something of a weakness for mature guys. she really just goes for the person she's attracted to and / or has a connection with, so dating someone older than her just doesn't phase her at all.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?: i can be selective but only because sawyer has to have chemistry with the other muse. i'm always open to talk about things, always. if i know the writer well and know their style of writing i'm happy planning a ship, that's totally fine. but i have to see the chemistry or the potential for it. i've mentioned that sawyer has something of a weakness for supernatural muses and / or bad boys, an accent always help too, but i will say that i wouldn't pair sawyer with a straight up bad guy. the morally gray are fine, but completely evil with no redeeming features just doesn't do it for it, infact its a major turn off for her. so you wouldn't see me shipping her with lets say someone like lucifer or crowley. she would literally rather die.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NS/FW?: this is kind of a weird one bc i've never actually gotten to write smut before. i'm not sure how good at it i would be, so for safety i usually just tend to cut to black or only write smut situations in meme responses. i wouldn't be against writing smut, since sawyer has an active sex drive and had a pretty bad phase of having one night stands all the time so it stands to reason that i could write smut for her and it not be out of character. however i would have to really trust the person i was writing with. i would have to have known them for a long time both in and out of rp, but i wouldn't object to no smut writing ever if i felt comfortable enough.

WHO ARE THE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU SHIP YOUR CHARACTER WITH?: as stated before tim & sawyer are my forever otp. some honourable mentions would be gavin miller and gabe fletcher written by the wonderful dee over @bondsforged. and clay from @crcss. in terms of canon characters from supernatural i'd be happy shipping sawyer with the following, but its by no means going to be forced on anyone writing those characters, i'm just saying i'd be open to it, castiel, gabriel, kevin tran, cole trenton, benny lafitte and gunner lawless. i'd also be down for ships outside of supernatural and into other fandoms, just come ask me about it. generally speaking i would ship sawyer with humans, vampires, witches, werewolves, shifters, etc. i'd also love to have a ship with a musician or singer like sawyer is bc then they can write songs and perform them together. or just give her a guy who's gonna love her tbh.
