(FE: Engage) Ivy, Lapis, Goldmary, Rosado, and Yunaka's S/O wanting to listen to their heartbeat
Tumblr media
I'm adding Rosado and Yunaka cause I feel like writing them as well.
And it's my pleasure! More Engage content must be given to the world
Tumblr media
(Ivy) "You wish to hear my heartbeat?...A-As you wish."
Ivy blushes for a very brief moment before the feeling of their head on her chest clears her mind.
She thought it'd be more embarrassing, but it calms her. Ivy smiles as her hand brushes across their face.
Her S/O notices her heart started off beating fast but slowly evens out, though its still loud.
The blush never leaves, just like her smile.
(Ivy) "Does this comfort you, S/O? If it's alright with you, I'd...like to stay like this for a while."
Tumblr media
(Lapis) "You...what? Um...O-Okay, sure thing."
Lapis's heart threatens to leap out of her chest when S/O presses their head against it.
She doesn't really know what to say, but upon seeing how calm S/O is, she calms down herself.
Lapis sits awkwardly still, waiting for S/O to be satisfied.
Her heartbeat continues at a fast pace but she can't help but chuckle.
(Lapis) "Jeez, if you just wanted to cuddle, you could've just asked that instead."
Lapis ruffles their hair with her hand playfully.
Tumblr media
(Goldmary) "Why, of course you can. Who wouldn't want to be this close to me?"
She takes S/O's head into her chest confidently with her signature smirk.
Her heartbeat is very calm, Goldmary humming in content.
She barely fidgets, her attention all on S/O and waiting for a reaction.
Seeing them smile gets her to speak up.
(Goldmary) "Surely this isn't all you wanted from me, S/O? You don't need to be shy, you know."
Tumblr media
(Rosado) "Hm? Sure, listen away!"
Rosado lets S/O lay on his chest, blushing ever so slightly.
He can't control himself and immediately begins cuddling S/O, his arms bringing their head closer.
He giggles, brushing their hair back with one free hand.
His heartbeat fluctuates faster when he's getting into proper cuddling mode, but is relatively stable.
(Rosado) "You're so adorable, dear.~"
Tumblr media
(Yunaka) "Huh? Why do you wanna-...Hah, alright, go ahead."
Uncharacteristically for Yunaka, she gets extremely quiet when S/O puts their head on her top of her chest.
The look in her eyes grow extremely soft alongside her voice.
She hugs them closer all of a sudden, her heartbeat getting faster and faster.
Yunaka takes a deep breath as the pounding of her heart doesn't stop.
(Yunaka) "...Hm? My heart's pounding? Gee, I wonder why.~"

Been playing a little game called pretend that I was given a written premise for fe engage characters and had to design them as if they didn't already have designs*. Here's Timerra, Panette, and Yunaka !
*kind of. I keep color palettes and generally follow that rule loosely but that's what it is in theory
Explanations/thought process bullet points below the cut
Timerra
I gave her Fogado's feathery sleeves and her mother's feathers in her hat to make them feel a little more connected
In her support with Alear she talks about wearing jewels and she straight up is not. Unless her balloons are jewels¿? So I gave her some
Because she starts off with Ike's ring, she now has Ike's sleeveless-nes with the one shoulder pad and the big cape.
Changed her hair a bit to fit jewelry I thought would be neat
Tried to keep metal off of her skin directly so she doesn't overheat
Flower motif. Just felt like the vibe
Tried to vaguely keep her original silhouette, in that her center of gravity is at her hips. Everything else "points" in that direction
Panette
With how dedicated she is to being a Solm Retainer, you'd think she'd present herself in the Solm fashion more. (Not that Solm fashion is very concrete; I mainly worked off of Seforia and my Timerra redesign for consistency in that regard. So she has the signature lightweight fabric and the tassels + beads to indicate wealth.)
She needs a hood because she is so pale and she is going to sunburn to death . Also it's a little bit gothy
She's significantly less gothy overall bc it seems to me like Presenting As Dignified As Her Station Requires is her whole thing, and being goth is just a hobby
Tried to make her center of gravity higher so that everything points to her shoulders and she's parallel and opposite to Timerra. Don't know how well I succeeded there
Had a difficult time fitting in her brawling into her design. She's embarrassed about it so she wouldn't really want to indicate it...but it's also practical to be ready to throw down if needed...I worked that out by having wraps around her arms that are mostly covered, but on second thought I could stand to extend those to wrap around her knuckles too
Yunaka
Wanted to lean into her mysteriousness + practicality while also letting her be flashy
She's transfem. To me.
Tried to contrast very lightweight assassin-y cloth with big chunky leather
She lowkey reminds me of wolfwood trigun so she obviously keeps her low cut neckline. In reference to him 🙏
Kept it simple but with flare (hopefully). Flashiness is in how her clothing works as she moves (the two-toned "cloak" flitting behind her should be striking) instead of flashiness in jewelry or accessories.
Spare knives at her belt seem appropriate
Tried to keep fluttery strips of cloth throughout her design as a motif
Piercing. Real and true

Fire Emblem Engage 18 - 20
Spoilers beneath the cut. This game is SO much fun to play, even if the plot is a bit basic.
Also, I'm shipping Alear with someone HARD.
Ok, so I paired Lief with Goldmary because I thought she'd benefit from the extra build staff and he 100% friendzoned her in their support, lamo.
Time for just about everyone to get Canto. About to see a lot of Sigurd's support conversations. Ivy, Hortensia, Seadall, Chloe, Goldmary, and Merrin are all getting Canto. Alfred already has it. I have Kagetsu with Sigurd right now and may or may not leave it that way. We'll see.
Ouch, Ivy's and Sigurd's support hurt. He talked about knowing the pain of a grieving child. My heart. 😭😭😭 His with Hortensia is pretty much the same. 😭😭😭
Goldmary commits to her gimmick. She is gaslight, gatekeep, and girlboss all in one.
Has anyone found a good use for Ike's blessing? It's makes everything so heavy and the rewards don't seem worth it.
Ok, so it looks like they already patched in (or added) a way to grind supports as a free update (I'm getting the DLC, but not yet). That was one of my biggest complaints about this game is how hard it is to get supports, esp since it encourages you to constantly replace your units, like every single freaking chapter almost throws superior units at you. Way worse than previous games. This should fix that a bit.
Oh, wow, and it got me Alfred and Yunaka's A support first time! I dropped her because I swear she didn't get a single strength point in her level ups, but their supports were really interesting so far. But I didn't get Ivy and Zelkov's C when they swam together so . . . not sure how strong this is, but it's welcome nonetheless. Doing it twice unlocked their C support. Not bad, esp if you have this from the start next time and can grind out more supports.
Rosado taking his life in his hands claiming he's cuter then Goldmary. And Yunaka and Alfred's final support was pretty cute.
Eirika talking about Lyon will never not hurt me. Her paralogue was a big step up in difficulty from Corrin, I feel. I think it was the map layout constricting movement so much and her wing sword making is harder to take advantage of the flier friendly areas.
Somniel is more fun gameplay wise than the Monastery because it's less necessary and feels less tedious, but man does it mess with the storyline way more than the Monastery did. Lief is like "there are still rings in trouble!" and Goldmary is just . . . lying in her bathing-suit and tanning. It's unintentionally funny.
Sombron is pissed that he lost Eirika and Sigurd. No mention of Lief though. 😭
So . . . Alear and Veyle are siblings, right? That means Lumera had sex with that dude.
Yessssss I was so hyped seeing a chapter on the water. I love ship battles. And a recruitable enemy too! This is like old-school FE.
So "the Miracle" that all the Emblems are discussing and mentioning Lumera, is it reviving someone back to life? Also, cool that Sigurd took the lead there.
Man, I just had one of the most satisfying overrides yet. It was during Lief's paralogue, and Kagetsu!Sigurd with Ridersbane must've taken out like 6 of Lief's mage horses.
I also sent Alfred way out by himself to chase down the speedwing on Lief's map. I "told him" that if he survived, he'd get the speedwing. Boy tanked everything like a champ and ended up MVP of the battle (deserved), so now he's 2 points faster.
Both Kagetsu and Ivy are level 19, so I'm doing Ch 19 before Sigurd's paralogue hoping they reach 20 there, and I can reset before doing that chapter where there's a TON of units to fight.
Are we going to fight wolves AGAIN? I hope they die for good this time.
So is Mauvier only staying with the 4 wolves to protect Veyle? Or partly? So I still predict we can recruit him later. I wish we could recruit Griss. Dude is unhinged. I'd love to see supports lol.
I think it's cool that Alear wanted to leave the area because there's no one left. But also fell a bit harder for Alfred who struggled with that decision the most.
This map is going to be VERY annoying with all that purple shit everywhere. Though, do I get Micaiah and Roy back after this?
It's amazing to me that we can destroy the Wolves so many times, and they keep trash talking. Somehow. They're so pathetic. And then, yet again, our heroes are chitchatting and somehow the enemies keep running away. I think it's best you just turn your brain off.
Alfred is like, "should we really let them go?" The voice of reason, finally. But Roy and Micaiah back!
I like Ivy so much more than I expected too. She's hilarious. Her B support with Panette was gold (and some really good voice acting too).
Why does no one ever want to spar with Kagetsu? 😭 There are so many supports about sparring, but not poor Kagetsu. He needs to support Alfred. He's always down for training.
There are so many characters I want to use next time because I like their personalities: Jade, Citrinne, Rosado, Fogado, Zelkov, and Boucheron are some. Pannette has promise. Lapis seems cute. I'm sure Timerra MUST have more to her than songs about eating meat.
Chloe and Merrin are girlfriends. Also, Goldmary starts stripping naked in her support with Framme. Didn't put that on my bingo card.
Micaiah's paralogue map is an amazing choice. Alcryst is the 3-13 Archer this time I guess lol. And there's a stand-in for Sothe too I see. Glad he got a little shout out there.
I GOT THE DEER 😭
Goldmary needs some real issues in her life. Homegirl is having a breakdown because she made a funny face while eating. Who knew her and Framme's support would have so much entertainment?
So at the end of Roy's paralogue he's like "I used to know this demon dragon who wanted to wipe out humanity, you kinda remind me of her." Uh, thanks??? What are you trying to say exactly, Roy?
Mauvier is a Camus archtype 100%, except hope he's recruitable.
Alfred's reassuring Alear. I swear, these two are literally perfect for each other. I've never shipped a self-insert character with someone this hard before.
Oh, will I get Celica back this time? She deserves much better than Griss. He's like the anti-thesis of what Celica stands for.
How come Griss gets to use Ragranok every. single. turn. I never get to do that. Kagetsu finally sent that asshole back to his tile. Couldn't have done it if I didn't trust Alfred a metric fuck ton and just sent him out there.
Woop, got Celica back. She's free! Only Marth left.
Griss was easy to deal with after he stopped attacking me every round. Also, why are we not killing Griss and just letting him laugh about whatever he's so amused over.
Poor Alear just learned that she's the child of Sombron. Ok, Alear needs some headpats. She's confused how she can be Lumera's and the Fell Dragon's child. My dear, it takes two.
Alfred says he doesn't believe it. The only one who said something to try and help her feelings and not about the situation.
I like seeing Sigurd get more focus again. I really hope this means FE4 remake is coming.
So Lumera isn't Alear's blood mother? But, the writers DO know you need two to have a baby divine/fell dragon, right?
Alfred being the first to support Alear 😭😊❤️ And so unquestioning and complete about it. Alear's response to him got me too. Like, I'm falling for this ship hook, line, sinker. I'm going to have a hard time pairing up Alear or Alfred with anyone else unless their S-Support is a dud.
Like, I like Dimileth and Chrobin well enough and all, but I ship all 4 of those with other people too, and sometimes more (like Dimitri and Chrom). But, like, I ONLY am shipping Alfred and Alear with each other so far.
I love how casual Alear is seeing Mauvier wander up, when like we've fought to kill each other multiple times.
Also, I'm rich again! Thank you, Elusia. I may actually be able to afford the cute outfits now.

20, 22, and 32 for the Engage Ask!!
20) Are there any ships that you like, whether popular or rarepair?
Alear/Yunaka is the one I actively ship and it's sadly less popular than it should, but another one I really like is Chloè/Merrin because not only they're this close to making out in their C support, there's this one artist that just constantly makes gorgeous art about them.
Timerra/Ivy is another neat one even though I don't actively ship them and- oh, right!
In the last Engage manga chapter Rosado calls Alcryst cute and, you know. I can see those two making a pretty good pair <3
22) What is your favorite song on the OST?
Oh, it's got to be Determined Journey. Such a good song and it fits the mood of the maps it plays in so well.
32) Was there anything you disliked in the game, whether it came to gameplay or story, from a major dislike to a minor nitpick?
Compared to, uh, another Switch Fire Emblem game, I don't have any major dislikes in Engage, but that said I do have a bunch of minor grievances.
Like Alear's first encounter with the Corrupted being accidentally goofy through awkward dialogue (luckily the manga and later scenes make it clear their fear of the Corrupted isn't just "ooo scary undead!", it's straight up PTSD), the whole thing about Veyle's draconic instinct being a load of garbage in my opinion because they don't apply to any other dragon in Elyos so why is she the exception (that's the reason why I go with an alternative explanation for her evil self's origin being a personality crafted from her intrusive thoughts exacerbated by Zephia's magic).
Alear still being an Avatar thus unable to be called by name is quite frustrating given their whole character arc has a major component in wanting to be approachable despite being the Divine Dragon and, you know. I just hate the way Switch FE Avatars are handled.
And Zephia may be probably the most interesting example of the archetype, but at the end of the day she's yet another evil sorceress in skimpy clothing whose majority of the character relies on being beautiful and/or motherly. And I say this while still liking her and thinking she's underrated.
(Personally I appreciate that her wanting to have a child with Sombron and only Sombron is not out of any romantic interest but out of a coldhearted desire to have the most powerful servant possible all to herself. (Note that Zephia begins being interested in the idea of a child only after Sombron expresses his whole, um, philosophy on family) Also she is absolutely not interested in Alear in any way which not gonna lie, it is so refreshing to see.)
Also I hate Veyle's ankle chains and think they're stupid.

Made an Engage tier list, this is purely from a combat standpoint not about how they are as characters! Gonna put some explanations under the cut. There are two spoilers at the very bottom of the explanation so beware of going below the D Tier section!
Tumblr media
Okay obviously I lied bc Sommie is at the top but how was I gonna see him and not put him there? Anyways!
S Tier: I genuinely never thought Alcryst would be very good but his insane Dex growths combined with a high Dex cap makes Luna an invaluable tool that procs often. If you give him an energy drop or two, while not necessary in the least, he'll become an actual nuclear warhead. Chloe is S because her availability + really good personal magic growth combined with Griffin Knight just being a pretty good class makes it so that if you give her a Levin Sword even as early as chapter 8 or 9 she'll be melting everything in sight and retains nearly that level of viability for the rest of the game. Panette shines with Ike though sometimes I give him to Diamant. Even still, slightly nerfed when paired with Hector she is still an i n s a n e unit and I would recommend placing her on any and every team composition you'll ever have. Genuine demon of a unit and I love her dearly. Seadall is self explanatory, dancer always S Tier.
A Tier: Jean wasn't on this list for some reason but he'd be at the top of A if he was. So much potential, he can do pretty much anything very well especially with Veronica. Hortensia's staff +1 range utility paired with pretty decent stat growths makes her the best healer imo. Yunaka paired with Corrin outshines any other dagger user in my experience though I do plan on messing around with her viability with Chrobin. Anna paired with Camilla as an axe Mage Knight makes amazing use of Camilla's skills and weapons, I'm aware that Sage Anna with Byleth is also very good but I'm very partial to this setup. Rosado reclassed into great knight and paired with Tiki becomes immortal against physical damage after a few levels it's wild. Alear being this high may be a surprise but they can be very good when reclassed immediately into wyvern knight after promotion. Kagetsu is someone I haven't used but I can't deny that everyone seems to think he's very good. Merrin provides good utility when paired with Lucina to poison foes during chain attacks due to her movement range and good stats. Louis is this high up due to his availability, amazing tank up until Diamant can take off or you get Rosado going and then he starts falling off.
B Tier: Diamant makes a good off-tank when paired with Ike, especially if he gets lucky with Sol. Goldmary is another candidate for Lucina who can make chain attacks a damage carry if you handle her properly on the hero class. Ivy is a competent unit though from what I've seen/read I messed up by not giving her speed buffs from Lyn which I plan to do in this run. Jade is another competent tank that falls off in endgame. On paper Zelkov seems better than Yunaka, however her synergy with Corrin and personal skill has her winning out to a large degree against him in my opinion. Good replacement option though if you get unlucky with her growths/lose her. Lapis is another good replacement option for Kagetsu specifically, she makes a very good Swordmaster though I also enjoyed her as a wyvern knight. Pandreo is the second best healer imo and can deal very good damage if set up properly/paired with Soren though I don't recommend this late-game as I'll explain later. Céline can be very good early game though she falls off quickly especially if reclassing Anna to Mage Knight and using Ivy.
C Tier: Etie I feel is a good unit though I can't deny that she falls off quickly when compared to Alcryst and in a game with such few deployment slots compared to viable characters I can't justify using her. Alfred is another character that falls off quickly due to his unique class being redundant with his low Dex scaling and his growths not being viable enough to justify another class. Admittedly I haven't used Amber much though from what I have experienced/seen/read he doesn't distinguish himself much at all. Framme makes a competent healer if you lose Hortensia or Pandreo, otherwise I'd recommend dropping her ASAP. Citrinne relies nearly entirely on Olwen's S rank bond ring Dire Thunder ability, she simply doesn't have the stats anywhere but her damage to justify anything else or being any higher. I'm actually not too sure on Vander, as with every Jagen I drop him very quickly so I'm not sure how he scales. Haven't heard much though so he can't be too fantastic.
D Tier: God I wish Timerra was more viable, I love her as a character but she's so utterly RNG reliant that I can't justify investing in her on hard mode especially when her role is filled far easier and more reliably by Diamant. Clanne is someone who if you're absolutely committed to using him should be reclassed to an axe unit to make use of his good accuracy and related growths however I don't personally find it worth it. Fogado suffers from somewhat lackluster growths and an utterly useless unique class, reclass to Warrior if determined to use him but there are much better options. Boucheron is a sad case because while you can make him viable it takes pretty hefty investment and quite some time to set up. Other than that one specific setup he's simply not good. Bunet I love you you out and proud creature, absolute freak of a character but I can't think of a single case you'd want him on a team other than a niche setup with Celica's food skill and even then it's more gimmick than anything.
Spoilers!
Mauvier would go in B Tier right behind Diamant. He may join rather late but his scaling is actually very decent and his base stats get ramped up very quickly with a little bit of work. I'd recommend giving him a try just for the sake of judging for yourself.
Veyle is a curious case because while I'd place her in A tier between Rosado and Alear I can see why some people put her in C Tier. She has two specific niches: a Celica Echo Draconic Hex setup to become a dedicated debuffer and the other being paired with Soren. This is what I was referencing above and why I place Veyle in A tier, when paired with Soren she becomes a perpetual near unkillable glass cannon to an unbelievable degree. Takes insane damage but heals it back almost instantly, I've seen her solo entire maps with this setup on higher difficulties.

I know next to nothing about engage at the moment, but I would most definitely like to read your thoughts on your favourite or least favourite characters so far! Or anything you like/dislike about the make, really!
Also- I have no idea about anything about the Brodian family besides They’re Royalty but I would 100% die for Alcryst.
I'll be honest, Engage has really surprised me with just how much fun it is!!
(Spoilers below the cut!)
I actually love a lot of different characters. Alcryst is my boy, he keeps outleveling everyone but the healers because I have to take him everywhere. Also, please know that you will not die for Alcryst: Alcryst will die for you (he is 100% willing to throw himself into danger to protect other people because of a frankly massive inferiority complex that makes him believe he's worth less than the people around him; I honestly do not know where this comes from, given that his brother and father love and support him so much, but his brother being perfect in his eyes may contribute in part).
Also, Fogado. I was so afraid I was going to hate Fogado because the pre-release stuff gave the impression of a flirt along the lines of Virion or Inigo, one of my most beloathed character traits. Fogado is honestly more along the lines of Claude in how laid-back and easygoing he seems (while secretly getting shit done), and I love him so much.
(Also, both Alcryst and Fogado are the younger brothers and have an archer class specialty, so between them and Takumi and Claude depending on how canon you consider Three Hopes to be, I apparently have a Thing for the younger brother archers in Fire Emblem games.)
I also love Boucheron. Boucheron my beloved. Buff and kindhearted and everyone is obsessed with his muscles. It's hilarious. But he takes it in stride with incredible grace and also he's just so nice? His supports are all great and also I love setting him up with Lucina's ring because they synergize so well (her special move calls in all allies within two spaces to join in a chain attack, and his personal ability raises his strength when allies jump in to assist like that).
AND YUNAKA. I was so sure that Yunaka was going to backstab us but I was completely wrong and I honestly ended up so attached to her. She's so fun and honestly so silly, which is hilarious since she's literally an assassin or, well, former assassin. "Hiya, Papaya" is now ingrained in my lexicon, thank you Yunaka.
Oh and Zelkov and Kagetsu. They are both utterly delightful in completely different ways: Zelkov is very cool to the point of coming off as intimidating but he has no tolerance for boredom: he teaches himself new things and tries his hand at all manner of crafts and hobbies to keep himself engaged. Also, he has the most interesting inflections in his speech I have no idea what it's drawing from but I love his speech pattern. And Kagetsu is the exact opposite: he's bright and cheery and charming and friendly and so excited about so many things he's so endearing. Also, I don't think that the common langage of Elyos is his first one because he says "I could quiz you" instead of "I could kiss you" and I just. I love him. I love him so much.
I'm also really fond of Alcryst's older brother Diamant, Fogado's older sister Timerra, Rosado the adorable wyvern rider, Merrin the wolf knight who's obsessed with rare critters, Lapis the sword knight who loves a craft project, Jade the meditative knight who secretly writes novels in her free time, Etie the archer with her weighted teacups for getting buff during teatime, Saphira the axe-wielding badass old lady, Framme and Clanne the twin presidents of the Divine Dragon fanclub...honestly it's a shorter list of characters I don't like.
Funny enough, I'm not a big fan of Vander. He might be fine if not for how he comes down hard on Framme for forgetting things, and Framme gives off intense ADHD vibes. I got in a lot of trouble as a kid for forgetting things people told me, so it does not endear me to him when Vander chastises a girl with attention problems rather than trying to coach her and figure out a system that works for her.
I'm also not big on either Hortensia and Goldmary. Both of them are manipulative in different ways but it's extremely uncomfortable; Hortensia gives me Severa vibes with how she tries to leverage her cute looks and get people to fawn and fuss over her, while Goldmary is...almost like a lady Inigo, in a way? She's extremely flirty and kind of full of herself from what I've seen and I just haven't been endeared to her as of yet. I still have a lot of supports to unlock though so all of these might change!
I actually really like a lot of the mechanics in the game! Engaging is such a fun system and I love shuffling the rings around to different characters to see how they work together: giving Marth to an Archer with high speed will absolutely obliterate flying enemies (or just about anything else, honestly) with the extra shot of half damage for every attack they make. Right now I'm abusing Corrin's inheritable Quality Time skill for trying to build up supports because it increases the Support level of all nearby allies after a move (and heals a few points of damage too). Also, having weapon proficiency linked to the Engage rings means you have so much freedom with reclassing: right now I've gone to Advanced class just based on the original base class, but I plan on changing things around once I hit the max level just to see what happens! I think Yunaka would benefit from some time as a Wolf Rider for the Hobble class skill, but Thieves and Dancers are special classes that don't have a level cap at 20 so I'm still trying to find the max level for her. Also, I haven't seen a single normal Base Class that has a unique class skill: only Advanced Classes do, but once you've used a Master Seal once every other Advanced Class change just takes a Second Seal; combined with that freedom afforded by the weapon proficiency system, it's super easy to experiment.
Also I kind of love the skirmishes. Skirmishes level with you: at this point my skirmishes are asking for Advanced Class Level 11 and 12 while the main story is something like Advanced Level 4 or 5. I actually got forced into doing the story at one point because it needed Advanced Classes and I just didn't have enough Master Seals. On top of that, after battle you have an opportunity to run around, adopt animals, pick up items, and talk to your allies! It's really interesting to explore these maps in 3D that you'd just viewed from above or in brief flashes during combat sequences -- some of them are really beautiful, too, like the Solm Palace!
Overall the story isn't bad, either! It's been fun to play through, the cast is delightful, I'm honestly shocked and delighted that for once it's not the desert nation that's the site of the villains, and the dark-skinned characters are absolute gems with some remarkably keen strategizing in play when it comes to keeping their nation and its people safe. Full respect for Solm, I love it dearly (though I will confess that the number of lily white Solmese characters still grates on me: aside from the royal family, every recruitable Solmese character including the dancer is white, despite one of them making it pretty clear from her supports that she was desert born and raised).
That said, it definitely has some of the same flaws that I've seen in Fire Emblem games before it, which continues to be the most uncomfortable aspect to interact with. The villainous nation worships the evil dragon, the only good members of that nation are the ones who don't worship the evil dragon but instead worship the Divine Dragon, the warrior nation is justified in constantly encroaching on the evil nation's territory because they worship the evil dragon, the evil dragon in this case is quite literally devouring the inhabitants of the nation that worships it...there are several aspects that feel like they were lifted from Awakening, but this actually takes it a step further than Awakening ever did and has made Sombron directly and tangibly responsible for the death of a nation. In Awakening we know that Validar orchestrated events at the Dragon's Table in the doomed timeline, so it's not just Grima's influence that caused that disaster; I also don't think it's unreasonable to say that Validar's mind control over both Robin and the people of Plegia at large was only attributable to Grima's influence, since I've always been under the impression that Robin killed Chrom in the doomed timeline because of Validar's manipulation, not Grima's (that cackling at the end of the opening movie sounds like Validar to me, not Robin). My impression in Awakening was always that that Validar sacrificed Plegia to raise Grima, even in the doomed timeline; in Engage, Sombron sacrifices his own people because he's evil, I guess. It's just a bad look and does not lend itself well to crafting a nuanced villain.
I'm admittedly not done yet so hey, that may turn around, too, but my hopes aren't exactly high there.
Also Veyle is precious, I love her, I want to give her hugs and I want Mauvier to live even though I'm pretty sure he's not long for this world (preemptive RIP Mauvier).
Also, if you've made it this far, this is where I'll put the actual big spoilers:
I did not really feel anything when Lumera died. We knew her for a chapter at most, and while her affection for her child is heartwarming despite Alear's amnesia, her death didn't really have any punch because we barely knew her and it was telegraphed in the most obvious way ("we'll talk later and I'll tell you all these things" yeah right I've heard that from a Fire Emblem game before you're not making it out of Chapter 3 lady). Meanwhile, I was completely gutted by the death of Morion, King of Brodia and Diamant and Alcryst's dad. We didn't know him long, really, but we got to see him in action, got to see how he interacted with his kids, how much he loved his family, and how committed he was to the safety of his land and people. And when he was corrupted...you could bring his sons to the fight. And have them face their father. And the dialogues for the brothers when they faced their father just destroyed me. Diamant, worrying he's not ready for kingship, asking his father if he was a good son though Morion no longer answer; and Alcryst, insisting that he has to strike down his father because he knows the task would break the older brother he so loves, and telling Morion that he loves his father and always will. I was a wreck after that, they really pulled out all the stops with those conversations and I am still in pieces honestly.

L, R and U for the fandom asks?
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.
hah, was struggling for this one for a bit, simply on who to choose.
Alfred from Fire Emblem Engage is probably one of my, irrationally, least favorite characters, perhaps in that entire game. I think because he's a standout for Engage's weaknesses: a one-note character whose gimmick outstays its welcome, and while there's an undercurrent of potential with his character it's never actually realized due to the simplicity of the story Engage seeks to tell. He's also a sweet boy that fandom has the tendency to latch on to, while his sister is 100% better, which annoyed me
but this is for positivity!!! anyway, while Engage designs are over the top in this weird, colorful v-tuber way, once I got past that I kind of dig what they've done with him, design-wise. The country he's from is this idyllic spring-time farmland, and I like how that motif caries into the flowers in his outfit as well as the delicacy of the lace. It's over the top, but endearing to have the 'obsessed with muscles' character dressed in this delicate outfit.
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
I think the greatest of all time is going to be a lot of platonic relationships in Ace Attorney-- Phoenix and Maya is just about peak when it comes to their friendship and banter throughout the series, and Phoenix and Mia strikes such a unique and mentorship relationship. And the entire Fey clan has just this... terrible web of animosity and power struggle! bad, tense family (and especially sibling) relationships are great, and man does the Fey family do that well.
There's a reason why AA3 works so well as a trilogy ender, and it's because all the Fey relationships are so intertwined and complicated. it's great.
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites
need to get back to work so a speed round for this (with a theme!!! sorry going through my last fandoms I'm like, predictable):
Yunaka, Fire Emblem Engage: Speaking of Engage, Yunaka is fun! Engage character gimmicks are very one-note, but Yunaka is funny to me in the sense that she's putting up a very obvious farce on who she is. She's a character who wants desperately to be something else, and will put on a face to get there, even if that farce cracks quite a bit. it's really fun, even with Engage's storytelling problems
Sanji, One Piece: Sorry to anyone who thought I had taste!!! I like Sanji, unfortunately: he's a mix of a lot of specific brands of angst I enjoy (self-sacrificial moron driven by self-worth issues). on TOP of that, he's abrasive and annoying, not to mention extremely rude-mouthed, he puts up an aggressive front over his own feelings. on top of that, under that exterior, he's a kind person. good mix of things, unfortunately
Eunie, Xenoblade: Eunie is an abrasive loudmouth who doesn't admit her own feelings, even at the end of the game when she will never have the chance again!! she's headstrong and loud and opinionated and it seems like she's the type of person to wear her heart on her sleeve, but softer, vulnerable things she keeps close to her chest.

Engage Drip Marketing: Yunaka
Tumblr media
This one’s a day late. Wanted to get some personal writing finished first.
I figured we’d get the remaining royals first, but instead it seems like we’re getting Yunaka first. In terms of design, I’m kind of dispassionate. Like, I’m used to the overall style of engage characters, so she seems like nothing new. And as dumb as they are, side waist windows is such a niche design choice that I appreciate the novelty. Also, oh look, a short girl that doesn’t look like a baby, mostly thanks to booba. I do unironically like that shade of red/ purple they used for her hair though.
Now, for the intro tweet…
Yunaka is a strange girl you meet during your travels. She's bright and active, and gets along easily even with people she's just met thanks to her good vibes.
And the Cutscene tweet…
Yunaka is trying to find something she dropped. Maybe these two nice people will help her.
Yunaka: "How could I mess up like this..."
Alfred: "You there."
Yunaka: "Huh?"
Alfred: "What are you doing crying in a place like this? Is something wrong?"
Yunaka: "...Yi-"
Alear: "You must be in shock. Sorry for suddenly talkin-"
Yunaka: "Yipee! Help is here!"
So, at first glance, she seems to be your typical cute and plucky thief girl. Considering the cutscene takes place at night, I think we’ll end up recruiting her after the night village map. The presence of Alfred makes me confident of this.
Of course, the juicier stuff is shown off in the crit clip…
Yunaka's starting class is Thief. Good at picking locks and dazzling enemies with swift moves. Uses daggers, capable of poisoning enemies with them.
Not gonna lie. When Yunaka’s voice went deep and cold for her crit quip, she shot up from a 4/10 to a 9/10. Also, the gold plating on her legs looks dope. If Yunaka turns out to be like a gremlin version of Charlotte from Fates, she may end up being one of my faves.
As for the clip itself, it takes place in the ruins chapter, so nothing new here. However, another tweet I don’t feel like copy and pasting did shine some light on how daggers will function. Not only are they 2 ranged, but they inflict the poison status, which works differently, again…
So in old dames, poison worked like in more typical jrpg’s, dealing a little bit of damage and wearing off in a couple turns. This meant it was about as dangerous as a gnat when integrated into Fire Emblem gameplay. In fates, it shaved off 10% of your health after combat. That doesn’t seem like much, but if you weren’t careful it could fuck you up fast. Especially if a unit was surrounded by multiple enemies that could inflict it.
In Engage, poison seems to be a stackable defense debuff, and one that doesn’t go away on its own. Since we don’t exactly see how much your defense is affected, I can’t really say what my thoughts are. This could be op/ frustrating, or this could be largely irrelevant. Only time will tell.
Honestly, though, I feel like status effects just don’t work in Fire Emblem. Even in typical jrpg’s status effects are hard to do right. If they aren’t punishing enough, they might as well not even be there. If they’re too punishing, they feel unfair and unfun. And a lot of them limit or take away your control in some way. And in Fire Emblem, where so much happens each turn, where merely one or two rounds of combat can mean life or death, where the mere act of position of unit affects so much, any act of taking the players control away can put them in unfair positions. Easier to manage and understand stat changes could make this work though, as long as it’s easier for the player to know what those changes will be ahead of time.

early game (just got Yunaka) fe engage party members, ranked:
1. Yunaka
Tumblr media
very loveable. ethically dubious cutie. buddy if your saccharine, bubbly personality is a thin veneer over the heart of a killer... then we'll really be in business
2. Chloé
hot woman who rides around on a wingéd horsé. strong wlw energy. "you're just like a sleeping princess from a fairy tale which is why I watch you sleep." actually good at battles too which is a huge plus. speaking of huge,
3. Alear
I like her vacant-ass expression and I bet there's Harrier Du Bois dialogues going on in there all day. I also like that she wakes up with no knowledge of anything at all and finds out about her important destiny and is just like "yeah I'm on board. this all seems reasonable."
4. Etie
she's got abs. please talk about something other than exercise though I am begging you
5. Celine
fine. preposterous clothing.
6. Alfred
this probably isn't that kind of game but he's got "noble boy who turns crooked midway through the game" vibes. I'll be there to kill him when he does.
7. Boucheron? Bergeron? muscle guy.
he's also in this game.
8. the twins
they're actually not as annoying as I thought they would be. but that's not the same as "not annoying"
9. louis
bro get your heavily-armored ass over here. Louis you're missing the battle!! c'mon!
10. Vander
he is going to have four glasses of wine and make a pass at me and tell me how he's always loved me. might start crying.
11. Jean
forgot about him entirely. no opinion. idk if I need any more pipsqueaks running around.

Spoilers up to Chapter 12
So, I may have cheated when I played through Chapter 10 and 11 once I saw that Ivy and Zelkov join at Lv17 and my squad were at ~Lv11-13, so I went back and did some grinding because skirmishes are terrifying enough as is without the bridge map flier swarm going up by four levels out of nowhere. Plus I really wanted Canto (okay, “Canter”) on Chloé given that it’s been pretty useful to have a pegasus knight who can hit then get out of harm’s way and we’re losing access to Sigurd for a while, but SP is difficult to grind, so I’ll just be saving hers up until he inevitably comes back. They’re really stingy with money in this game too, though I suppose weapons don’t break…
Also, now people are arriving promoted, so maybe I should start using master seals at a specific level on units so I have some idea about vaguely who’s at what level. Though looking it up, seems Lv1 Paladin Vander is Lv15 overall, while everyone has raced on ahead of him now, so I’ll just have to keep that in mind.
Yeah now I might need to actually give my units a critical eye. Clanne is blowing Citrinne out of the water in everything but magic, for example, but Citrinne is a lot more interesting to me haha. (Maybe I should second seal him, but his magic is still better than his strength!) I’m trying to use everyone, so it’s not like I’m having to make a decision over which to keep on the main team just yet, but there aren’t that many master seals, so difficult decisions might need to be made…
Three Houses has given me the bad habit of not needing to choose who to put on the sidelines since I always went with the class or faculty-Wolves on Church route lmao.
Yunaka is on the team no matter what, of course, her personal skill and crit personality change are too fun (also! I found out her real name!). I actually like Lapis a lot more than I thought I would, but Kagetsu, Diamant and Alear are all taking up footlocked sword roles… Alcryst was kinda way too cartoony for me when he was introduced, but when he is in serious moments, he’s fine and “Get Behind Me!” proccing all the time when he’s behind a frontliner is fun. Alfred has the opposite problem, where he had more potential to be interesting at first, but his supports get dull when they’re all about bodybuilding while his sister has to reveal why he’s the way he is in other supports - but Amber is also v gimmicky and probably the least interesting Brodian unless his supports pull things around, so eh. Jade is more interesting to me than Louis, a good front-liner, and at least one axe, but her personal vs his means she’s more of an all-rounder compared to Louis’ pure defence, especially now I slapped Res+3 on her… Jean was initially a little bit more unique, but Framme’s support had her call out Brodian aggression against Elusia so I’m warming to her lol. But her personal only matters when Alear is fielded…
…It’s gonna be a Brodian run, isn’t it huh, and just after me complaining about Morion lmao. Diamant’s insistence on peace in his supports compared to his dad has endeared him to me, though. I’m interested to see more of his supports with Elusians who are not Kagetsu who is from somewhere else which is why I guess it’s fine that it’s just “ohh let’s have a duel and compare our strength” FE support number 5890267
Fogado does seem interesting though, Pandreo seems decent, fake horse Boucheron left my memory the moment I won the map.

Vander & Framme B
Etie & Boucheron C
Clanne & Vander C hunky-dory!

Céline & Louis C I just fucking realised Louis is J. Michael Tatum.
Clanne & Louis B I really need to see the A support. what is it cooking.

[BATTLE START]
oh god this map's big. I haven't plays any Archanea games, but I assume this is a reference map.
OMG that map almost killed me. There's was this one dodge I really needed from Chloé that she couldn't do, so then she was in danger + stranded, so I had to save her and yada yada it was a mess. Yunaka w/ edel emblem really saved me in the last few turns. Anyway, I still did enjoy the map!
[POST BATTLE]
aww, I'm glad to see marth & tiki talk. I wish there were more interesting emblem/emblem conversations.
Alfred & Sigurd B reminded me that Lumera asked him something that we didn't see...what does he know.
omfg Edel talking about impressions to Yunaka is so fucking funny since all the house lords did at least 1 in houses 💀💀💀
Alear & Framme B "The Divine Dragon loooves to drink water." so true! a great reminder to be like Alear and drink up! Framme is even a fan of the pepsi hair.
Framme & Cholé C
Céline & Etie B I loved that little Etie animation when she said "And look at me now!" oh my god it's the training teacups again.
Yunaka & Etie C "Whatcha need, pumpkin-seed?"
Etie & Clanne B
so the ally notebook now says that she has a distant relation to Vander...interesting. WTF is judging beets.
Alear & Alfred B If Alear won't eat them, I sure will. Alfred playing the flute to help Alear sleep 😀 He really is trying his best though. noooo Alfred, Alear should be the worthy one, not you!
'[Alfred] was ill as a child, and now seeks to compensate through exercise' 🥺🥺
okay, chapter map time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Ooh, those are some cute Unit/Emblem combos.
Here’s my list for who goes where.
Marth: Alear. (Frequently bought together, do not separate.)
Celica: Céline. (Frequently bought together, do not separate)
Sigurd: Chloé. (She was my favorite female character prior to the game’s release, so I wanted her to have an Emblem and I feel like Sigurd’s tragic life’s story pairs with her love of a fairytales in an interesting way.)
Leif: Fogado. (They’re both little bros with a Lance wielding big sister who they love.)
Roy: Diamant. (Crown Royal and their partner Emblem)
Lyn: Ivy. (Crown Royal and their partner Emblem)
Eirika: Veyle. (Felt fitting to give the ring of the twins to Veyle, as it not only references to two sides of Veyle but could also reference Lyon and his possession.)
Ike: Timerra. (Crown Royal and their partner Emblem)
Micaiah: Yunaka. (She was the one to find Micaiah and she probably reminds her of Sothe)
Lucina: Alfred. (Crown Royal and their partner Emblem)
Corrin: Seadall. (He was the one to find Corrin and he probably reminds her of Azura)
Byleth: Hortensia. (Since Hortensia used Byleth the most when she was an enemy, I felt like partnering them together would give her some closure, and their Bond Supports proved me right.)
Tiki: Anna. (Since Awakening Tiki and Anna were friends, I thought it’d be cute if Engage Tiki and Anna could be friends too.)
Chrobin: Jean. (Since Jean is the Aptitude unit of Engage and that archetype was first invented in Awakening (I think) I decided to give Jean the Chrobin bracelet)
House Leaders: Alcryst. (Alcryst’s skills mesh well with what the House Leaders offer, plus I think it’s endearing that Alcryst reminds Edelgard of Bernadetta.)
Hector: Vander. (I feel like Vander would remind Hector of Oswin and Marcus, plus I wanted all of Alear’s retainers to get an Emblem partner.)
Soren: Clanne. (I wanted Alear’s retainers to have Emblems and I figured Soren’s skill set would mesh well with Clanne’s.)
Camilla: Framme. (I wanted Alear’s retainers to have Emblems and I figured Camilla’s skill set would mesh well with Framme’a.)
Veronica: Amber. (Amber is probably my favorite male character in the game and he also holds the honor of being able to make Veronica laugh so I think they’d work well together.)
(I beat the game before the Fell Xenologue came out, so I never used any of the DLC units.)
Oooo good combos! I also beat the game before Fell Xenologue came out, but it was nice without DLC for my first playthrough!
As i already said my pairings for symbolism last ask, let me give you some GAMEPLAY for this one! I know you didn't ask for this but I have to give a long ask with a longer answer 🤣
Marth - Alear and Diamant, break defenses with weapons that can break are good, especially if you have multiple weapons, and then you can charge up your engage meter easily. Too bad Marth early game doesn't utilize this much, and you don't use him much endgame either.
Sigurd - Seadall, Alfred and Louis, gallop on cavalries go brrrrrr, also brave lance is good for slow units and hits hard, except accuracy, its okay he also gives hit, also canter is busted.
Celica - Celine, Ivy, Chloe, and Framme, she really needs to go on a magic user for extra power, and if you are flying you get extra range (this is how i cheesed the Leif paralogue), otherwise she doesn't really do much near endgame, early game tho she's neat. Sephraim is good tho, there are corrupted everywhere.
Micaiah - Hortensia and Ivy, flying healers are busted okay, and aoe warp is good too, Hortensia has high luck to utilize multi Entrap, but Thani and Nosforatu is good in case for battle, but that really it, she is a very glorified healer and makes everyone a healer
Roy - Seadall, Diamant, Fogado, Alear, Pannette, hold out is busteddddd, if you don't get doubled. Calvary gets one more movement so that a plus, otherwise he's really there to be a statbooster. I give him to Pannette for those neat extra crits and vantage
Leif - Timerra, Pannette, and Mauvier, okay he's kinda underwhelming, you use him for like two chapters before he gets yeeted, and in endgame his engage attack doesn't do much damage. He's good in case your units need more build or you have the weapon advantage for reducing damage. Oh master lance is neat but he'll probably switch weapons on counter attack and you die. Vantage is neat tho, he's there to survive, not deal damage.
Lyn - Alcryst, Diamant, Celine, and Ivy, she is just SPEED, ya need speed, but she doesn't do much damage unfortunately for Alcryst case. But if you have a unit with speed problems just give Lyn to them. Speedtaker is really good if you get kills, and astra storm baits everyone you need, or snipe those 10 million flying units lollll
Lucina - Alear, Merrin, Yunaka, and Ivy, dual strike go brrrr, if you have daggers then it can poison as well, which is useful for bosses. Bonded shield is a bit unreliable unless you are a dragon or you are a specific unit. All for one is good in case you need set damage, but unreliable. However making anyone a backup is useful in some situations
Ike - Timerra, Pannette, and Mauvier, he's there to tank but no avoid. This is ironically bad for Timerra case because she is actually pretty speedy to avoid, but she's naturally tanky so it even outs. Wrath and Resolve and Great Aether is just a really good combo and for Pannette she's a monster. Put it on your speed curse units and they turn out okay. Ragnell is good with the a extra def and range
Byleth - Hortensia, Ivy, Fogado, Merrin, Gregory, and Celine, 4 person dance babyyyyyy. He gives magic so you should probably give it to your mystical units for that +2 magic range, also staves can also recharge the engage meter so you can just heal or obstruct to recharge. Ivy and Hortenisa is good since they can fly and heal, and Ivy has BAD luck so Divine Pulse helps, and it also affects staves. Unfortunately fthe Flying engage weapon sucks for Ivy and Hortensia 🤣 . Oh there is also Instruct but why would you use that for your engage turn unless you're a dragon???
Corrin - Alear, Veyle, Fogado, Celine, Rafal, and Nel, dragon veins come back with 8 effects!!!!! Fire is the most useful since it damages and hinders movement, but ice and healing are neat too, water isn't that usefull but less avoid is nice. Dragons are just op af here, and with Veyle she's pretty good. Also freezing movement and debuffing is so good
Eirika (and Ephraim)- Alcryst and Fogado, true damage go brrrrr. The twins are good on units who are speedy. If you can quad with any brave weapons with Eirika you can be sure that you will kill them due to TRUE DAMAGE. Ephraim is good as well if you need healing, and with bravery you also deal true damage. In engage form you are kinda broken lmao, you heal and do more damage, also Sieglinde is good agains corrupted. Fogado is great with them as he has weirdly good magic at base (also why do the twins give magic???) and Radient Bow is op if you have good magic as a bow user. Alcryst is similar case but he has bad magic lol.
Alear - uhhhh anyone really lmao, maybe not the healers. I tend to pick anyone who doesn't have their engage meter filled, or i need the healer/dancer to attack lmao. Bond blast is op and so is attuned, Lyrátion is hard but gaining meters is good, Dragon Fist is good if you actually have good magic (you don't usually for Alear), and Oligoludia is great for corrupted (and Fell Xenologue). I do think Mythical and Backup benefit the most do to extra damage output.
Edelgard (and Dimitri and Claude) - Alfred, Chloe, and Louis, raging storm go brrrrr, the other weapons are neat tho. The houses leaders are great if you want to chip damage or straight up destroy people. Their weapon sync are good with the lance, bow, and axe combos outside of engage mode. Shield gambit is okay if you're baiting out mages or range units. Oh with Byleth you can use houses unite and get another turn, and thats op
Tiki - Zelestia, Seadall, Framme, and Jean, divine blessing also op. If you use it next to Mart you can get either a engage meter filled or reset it back to 3 full turns, which is pretty huge. As a engaged form though she's a little weird since you can only use dragon moves, and she's physical unless your a mythical unit. She is very bulky tho so slap it on the ones who either don't do much and but need to survive.
Hector - Alfred, Madeline, Chloe, and Timerra, he's like Ike but you can actually dodge. He's great on units who don't have much build, or can't naturally double. Runesword is cool but it has weird calculations and unlike Micaiah Nosforatu span, Hector is supposed to be frontline so healing is neat if you need it. Armad just make you tankier, and Impenetrable is great for enemy phase. Lyn doesn't do that much for Storm's eye though
Camilla - Nel, Rafal, Alear, and Veyle, corrin but MORE, dragon vein is busted on Dragons, but in most cases i find ice and smoke (as it reduces def/res) rather useful, and sometimes stone. She's more damage oriented than Corrin but she jsut have very weird skills to use. Lightning is a neat weapon though to double, but engage she gives Soar and extra movement which is pretty good if you don't fly. Dark inforno is neat but it tend to hurt more than help, though with Corrin it helps a bit more with the extra aoe
Soren - Veyle, Celine, and Citrinne ,ranged attacks go brrrrr, and with Veyle he's op. Reflect is neat but i use it for gaining sp 🤣 , Excalibur is great against flying units, and bolting is just good. Catalyst is great as well, and slap him with a mage and you are good to go. With Ike, Catalyst is bigger so thats cool
Veronica - Ivy, Seadall, Goldmary, Hortensia, its gacha timeeeeee, though i use her as a Reprisal user, because extra damage is good. Summon Hero is nice but unreliable, though if you put her with a backup unit then its more useful. I find Fortify and Hliðskjálf neat but i didn't use that much unless its emergencies. Contract is op though its just dance but you gotta be stationary, which is good enough
Chrom (and Robin) - Celine, Yunaka, Zelkov, and Alcryst, rally bot is back!!!! Suprise attack is good but only if you have avoidance terrain, which you can fix with Corrin's fog. Rally bot is great and you can spam it, if you have nothing to do. When you are engage you get more magic which is great with magic units, and giga levin sword is even more op. With lucina its just extra chain attacks, but it might make a difference. Brute force is nice if you have a crit unit that has lowish strength then they should, but isn't that useful otherwise.
I thinks thats it! the great thing with Engage is that you can mix and match emblems with other units to get so cool combos, and you can do some fun combos in subsequent playthoughs!

Since it's still too soon for me to send Fòdlan asks... Alear, Veyle and Yunaka for the character ask game?
love that we sent each other the same characters...
cut for length and some spoilers for late- and end-game stuff
Alear
First impression: Like many, I thought the design was uh...interesting. Kinda silly. I didn't think the art was bad or anything, it's just, there was so much high saturation red and blue. Pepsiman to the max. Otherwise I had no strong interest or hopes for their characterization bc on average I am wildly neutral on protagonists even when they aren't avatar-esque characters.
Impression now: Hoo boy, do I love Alear something fierce and this hit me out of nowhere like a train bc I was not expecting Alear's writing to be so good, and just. Damn, Alear's one of the most characters of all time, love them lots and lots, probably my personal favorite FE protagonist honestly. Still can't believe the hair was plot relevant.
Favorite moment: Oooh, there's lots, but I really enjoyed the post-Ch10/11 scene where like, Alear looses everything they thought they needed to fight Sombron, but then Lucina gives them the pep talk and like, of course it's Lucina, the girl who has faced similar hardships, who knows what it's like to have to keep fighting against impossible odds, and like, Alear realizing that no wait yeah they have their friends and they might find help in Solm, and that initial burst of resolve to keep trying was just, I dunno, a really good midpoint both for the game's story arc, and for Alear's personal story arc... I ALSO really liked the scene post-reveal of Alear being a Fell Dragon where Alear literally just, sits and talks things out with the others instead of making some rash decision by themself, bc like, I know miscommunication or otherwise lack of healthy conversation makes for drama and all that, but it's actually so refreshing and interesting to have a character make the decision to talk things out instead and like, mmm, I absolutely loved that scene.
Idea for a story: I'm not much of an AU person, but a Lumera Lives AU might be interesting if only bc I'm not partial to the "self-sacrifice to save another" trope like, I know "I'd die for you" is a popular phrase right now for showing affection or love, but I find that willingness to die a bit concerning, and there's something really powerful about "I'd live for you" as a way of expressing love that I don't think gets explored enough. So maybe like, Lumera lives, but she has to go into a deep sleep to recover or something, and Sombron tries to mind-control her in Ch25, like how he did with Veyle with the crown, and after you free Lumera she's regained enough strength that she could be a last-minute recruit for the battle against Sombron, as it would be really cool to see her interactions with Alear after Alear's character development and growth (and Emblemification), as well as with Veyle and the other Lythos characters. A fic exploring that, as well as the post-game setting would be interesting. I'm probably not gonna write it bc I like coming up with ideas more than actually doing anything with them, but it's fun to think about.
Unpopular opinion: All positive opinions about Engage are unpopular opinions, but anyhow, Alear's writing is fantastic actually. Also I think Alear is the first and (so far) only time that FE has used an "avatar-esque" protagonist well, bc Alear has a firmly established personality and doesn't actually act as a true self-insert (since there's no customization outside of the name and gender appearance, neither of which are important to or affect the story), but still allows the player that sort of link into the game by letting them choose a gender appearance. Like, don't get me wrong I like the other avatar characters, but something about the execution didn't work either as an avatar or as a story protagonist for me for each.
Favorite relationship: Love, love, love Alear's familial relationships with Lumera and Veyle, and later Nel and Rafal, but I also love how much Alear kind of adopts everyone into their family in some way or another as well, like Alear turned the Somniel, this place of austere worship and divinity, into a place that's like a second home for basically the entire army plus the few random civilians who runs the stores.
Favorite headcanon: It's sorta implied in canon that Alear will literally just sleep all day if someone doesn't wake them up, but I think once Alear is awake they can also stay up for much longer than humans can without getting tired. However, Alear enjoys sleeping enough that they don't actually do the staying up thing that often and no one realizes it until some freak incident where Alear's awake for like a week solid, and then sleeps for a week afterwards.
Veyle
First impression: I came in knowing sort of vaguely what her arc was bc I spoiled myself on part of the Engage stuff, but I wasn't wildly interested or disinterested in her as a character.
Impression now: LOVE HER, she's so sweet, her story's actually way more tragic and hopeful than I was expecting it to be, and she's great, she's wonderful, I hope she gets all the nice things in life bc she deserves them.
Favorite moment: Oh, when she's able to break through the mind-control helmet, and forcefully take her own body back from Sombron's control so she could revive Alear, that was such a chilling scene to watch and it was so cool to see her finally take her own life back for herself. Like, she has this strength of heart that comes from how kind she is and then to see that strength manifest in literally being able to oppose even Sombron's most powerful magic, like damn I was so proud of her even as I was watching the lowkey horrific scene of Alear becoming a Corrupted play out.
Idea for a story: Ever since you mentioned a fic idea for Veyle rebuilding Gradlon I've wondered what that would look like, it's such a cool concept. Also, if there were potentially other dragon survivors who had gone into hiding who sought out Gradlon and Lythos after Sombron was defeated, how Veyle would interact with them, like, I dunno that would be interesting to explore. It'd also be cool to explore her potential relationship with Lumera (branching off from the Alear fic idea above).
Unpopular opinion: For all the criticism Engage gets, I haven't seen Veyle catch too much flack and that's nice honestly. I guess...I know a lot of people wanted to see Alear and Veyle turn into dragons, but I'm actually fine with them not being able to do that? Like it works for the narrative theme of questioning what it means to be a fell or divine dragon, and the idea that fell does not equal evil and the inability to transform does not make one a defective dragon feels relevant to both Veyle and Alear.
Favorite relationship: I love her familial relationship to Alear and how she's so excited to have Nel as a sister in their supports, and I'd like to imagine that excitement at having new siblings extends to Rafal as well. I think her relationship with Mavier (esp. her insisting they be friends bc she doesn't want a retainer or a worshipper) is nice too, and I love how invested she becomes in connecting with the various people in the army (I still want to know the results of her spicy food eating competition with Diamant).
Favorite headcanon: Like Alear, Veyle has a habit of giving people small gifts like pretty rocks or flowers that reminded her of whomever. Also, once she eases into a normal life routine a bit more, she likes to host parties or larger gatherings so she can be around a lot of friends in peaceful times and have lots of happy memories to cherish.
Yunaka
First impression: I thought her design was cute if a bit unusual for FE (esp. with the stars in her hair), but I wasn't sure what to think otherwise at first.
Impression now: Oooh, Yunaka's great, one of my top favorite characters for sure. I love the dichotomy between the peppy and lighthearted mask she puts up against how casually she drops these darker "definitely used to be an assassin" lines in battle. Plus she's such a mess, and I mean this in the best way, but like, where she's at in her life is a mess, she's trying to break away from being an assassin, she has no frame of reference for what is "normal", she doesn't quite know what she actually wants to do, she's terrified of people learning the truth about her but she also seems kind of relieved anytime they do, she's so incredibly complex while also being the fun girl who drops likes like "hiya papaya" and "zappy". She's just amazing, I love her so much as a character, we need more characters like her.
Favorite moment: Oh hmm, she has a lot of good supports, but I thought it was really incredible how she decides to open up to Alear in their supports about her past, but like, on her terms and because she chose to share this information. Like, I really enjoy her supports with Citrinne and Zelkov as well, but Citrinne sort of forces Yunaka to explain her past, whereas Zelkov's able to pick up on it bc he's also a former assassin, and in both cases Yunaka doesn't get to choose to reveal this thing about herself that she's trying to keep secret. I also really liked her supports with Alfred for this reason, bc while Yunaka thinks she's going to have to explain everything for them to be "actual, real friends", Alfred makes is very clear to her that he doesn't care at all about her past and is fine with only knowing the person she is now, on her terms, and he has no reason or need really to know more than who she is now, which was just like, really sweet (and very Alfred given that he's also keeping secrets).
Idea for a story: Hmm, maybe something exploring her life before joining Alear? Something post-game, following her travels and how she eventually figures out who she is and wants to be and becomes comfortable as that person (yes I'm ignoring the ominous ending card) and what she eventually settles into would be interesting as well.
Unpopular opinion: Something something about how people say Engage has less complex characters, and how Yunaka disproves that (well, there's plenty other characters I could cite, but I could literally write an essay on Yunaka she's got so much stuff going on). Also I think Yunaka is probably one of the most complex characters from the recent games, and she's also miles more interesting, complicated, and well-written than most of the women from 3H (no shade intended for the 3H ladies, they're great too, but some of them are pretty standard in terms of the FE women with one-key characterization).
Favorite relationship: Love her friendship with Alfred, and friendship or romance with Alear, and I think her relationship with Citrinne turns out really interesting too. Love that she and Zelkov just start hanging out as a way to sort of heal from the trauma of being assassins in their youth. Also her supports with Goldmary were incredibly good and I like to think the two remained friends. Basically Yunaka having friends who accept her for who she is and allow her to grow and become who she wants to be are Very Good, and I want her to have the best. Oh, and I know they don't interact in the game, but I think she'd get along really well with Veyle, especially since Yunaka didn't choose to be an assassin and her entire childhood was ruined bc of it, and she'd see Veyle who's also had a shitty childhood but still has some childhood left, and be like, "Yeah, I'm gonna make sure this girl's life is good from here on out."
Favorite headcanon: Her ending is unusually ominous and I like to Ignore It (inset meme image of Yunaka and Sonya shaking hands over a caption reading "FE woman with more than one personality trait ominously vanishing in their ending card"). I like to think that after her time as a street performer she travels the world doing random good deeds (helping out at Zelkov's orphanage, being that Really Strange Guest in Goldmary's classes, hanging out with Citrinne and helping her navigate how to better help the commoners, maybe even sometimes going and scaring a bunch of ruffians causing trouble to stop causing trouble bc while she's put the assassin life behind her, she can still be scary enough to get some troublemakers to reform their ways, so on and so forth). And I think she does eventually figure herself out and find a place she can call home and live out a happy, quit retirement.

Did Jean and Anna’s paralogues, and I don’t have much to say beyond why does Alear think child soldiers are a good idea?! It’s at least understandable to recruit characters in their late teens, since we don’t know the ages of legal majority in the Fire Emblem multiverse, but literal ten-year-olds?
I bench one pair of children only to find that their soonest replacements are also children. I’ll also probably bench these two. At least if I leave them on the Somniel, I know they’re safe.
Also, one of Etie’s comments in her C-Support with Alfred implies that Alfred’s new to this whole workout thing, so that’s neat to know. Most characters who are as into fitness as Alfred tend to already be pretty buff, so seeing a “gym newbie” (or equivalent thereof) is cool!
Also? Alear, Alfred, I love you two, but you are so freaking dense regarding Yunaka keeping a secret and being this bad of a liar.
Speaking of, though, I don’t think Fire Emblem has had compulsive liars before. That’s good to know.
I’m not disliking this game as much as I thought I would. The characters really seem to be calming down about the whole “Divine Dragon” thing, minus the twins, who I have benched. That being said, the gameplay is definitely better than the story. The rings definitely help a lot, and their myriad of benefits are interesting to balance out. Do you give Sigurd’s ring to Louis to help him catch up and even go past everyone else, or do you give it to a mounted unit to give them that extra edge in chasing down foes? At least the engagement isn’t literal, so you can mix and match as your strategies change!
(Also, forget what I said about changing Micaiah, Claude, and Corrin’s eye colors. All the Emblem characters have silver eyes, to indicate they’re spirits. That actually makes sense.)
I must say, though, when you have Chloé Engage with Sigurd, she looks really cool! The look really suits her!
Interestingly enough, the Three Houses ring has Boucheron fuse with Claude, and yet when he hits Bond Level 5, his conversation is with Dimitri. Perhaps I should pass it around to different characters and see who they all fuse with when they Engage!
Also, only the blue half of Alear’s hair changes with each character they Engage with. Huh. Perhaps blue is their natural hair color, and they dyed half of it red.

Star's Engage Catalogue Day 24 (part 1)
OK, I'm done with my break and I finally have time to play, and I have a lot of catching up to do. But I think I can still do it before the DLC comes out! Let me check the date-
"April 6"
Tumblr media
Yeaaaah... As you can tell things got really away from me. And with how much sh*t I have to do this month, I'll be lucky if I even have time to play this game, let alone beat it to get to the xenologue before the month is over. But I'll still try my best, especially since I don't have to rush as hard anymore.
But before I do that, I'm gonna start this day a bit differently. Since I wanna speak more about what happened the last time I played, something I wanted to talk about but was too tired to get to and has been consuming my thoughts for the last week. This is going to be talking about that last scene from chapter 20 and how it relates to Alear, so if you don't want spoilers, just skip this one. If you're cool then
Spoilers for chapter 20 (the last one)
Now I don't think I need to say that the ending scene after Griss reveals who Alear is was amazing. Everything from the voice acting, the writing, the music, and the emotions was on point. But what made me really love this scene and this chapter was something else.
I've noticed that an underlining theme some of the characters have is not allowing your past actions or problems to stop you from living your own life. Alfred dealing with his childhood illness coming back and pushing through to get stronger, the Elusian sisters turning against their kingdom and allying with their enemy to better themselves and give their people a better future, Yunaka leaving her past as an assassin behind and trying to do better while dealing with the consequences of that, Seadall becoming a well-renowned dancer despite being a homeless orphan as a child, Pandreo and Pannette salvaging a good life for themselves in their own way despite having sh*t parents; there are likely more examples I can give once I go through more supports. And the big example of this is Alear learning he's the Fell Dragons child but persevering in being the Divine Dragon.
Let me give an idea of just how intense learning this would feel. Imagine in your head learning in your adult years that your adopted and the people you've been calling your parents are strangers who picked you up on the side of the road. Got that idea in your head? Now imagine learning that your real parents are effectively Satan.
The fact that Alear didn't break down into complete despair and hopeless nihilism upon learning this is genuinely shocking. And even then, he was still left in shock and considered leaving the cause altogether. What point is there for him to stand as their beacon of hope if he's a false prophet? How can he accept his role if he's not even the person everyone believed he was?
It's what made Sigurd and the royals reassuring him so heartwarming because it reinforces the theme of the game; what matters is who you are now. Even if Alear isn't a true Divine Dragon in blood, he is one in heart. He's kind, caring, loving, and supportive despite his fell dragon lineage and that's no different now that he knows about it. And the people who love and care about him aren't going to turn their backs on him just because he's not a true Divine Dragon, because that love and trust in him was built on who he is as a person, not because of his title. And I feel like during the end stretch, Alear is going to come to truly accept his role and who he is meant to be, not just because he has Lumera's power in him, but because it's what he chooses to be.
And considering that the remaining Hounds know about this and that Zephia has already used the helmet on Veyle, I am f*cking terrified about what's gonna happen to my dragon children.
I just want them to have happiness!
