After Scarlett’s grand escape from NICU, she and I didn’t immediately go home. Home for us is actually 2 hours away in Andrews, Tx.  So going “home” for Scarlett meant an extended stay at Grandma Sylvia’s and Popo’s house (my mom & her boyfriend).
Both of whom we are so incredibly thankful for, for opening up their home to us following Scarlett’s hospital stay. I honestly can’t say enough how much their help meant to us during this transitional period.
Our reasons for sticking around longer are not as crazy as you might think. BJ & I made decisions that were best for our family at the time. While we would have loved nothing more than to take our sweet, tiny warrior home; it was better if she and I stayed close to her doctors for a little while. Following her release from NICU she would have several specialists she would need to follow-up with (within the first month alone). Cutting out traveling time, not only helped us financially but also gave this mama a peace-of-mind staying close to doctors who were already familiar with her medical history.  Not to forget to mention that Scarlett came home on supplemental oxygen support! All of which was something I wanted to be completely comfortable using, before taking any extended road-trips.
The Oxygen tanks & Pulse Ox Machine
The answer to the million-dollar question: Why did we choose to follow up with doctors in Lubbock, rather than Midland/Odessa which are a lot closer to us?
For starters. Because we wanted to. Our kid, Our choice lol.
But for real, because I was scared. I was a first-time mom, with a fragile baby, who had already overcome SO many obstacles. Having a choice between going to doctors in an area I’m not 100% familiar with. Verses seeing doctors in the area where my daughter was born, and we already knew.. I mean… It wasn’t really a choice – at least not in my eyes. We also have most ALL of our family in Lubbock. It’s where BJ & I were born and raised. So having that familial support and being so close, allowed the opportunity for our family to enjoy time with Scarlett. That was something we really wanted for her, especially during that time.
Grandma Sylvia
Finding balance isn’t; easy and can be very taxing. I know it took us time to find ours (and we’re still working on it lol). We found that by following the NICU schedule the first few days at home made the transition a lot easier on Scarlett. The absence of machines beeping and people coming and going made home eerily quiet for her. Thankfully the sounds from her oxygen machine created white noise which helped her sleep. I eventually started changing the routine a little at a time in order to make it our own and what worked for us.
That first couple of days home were both a challenge and a blessing. While I no longer had the helping hands of 100 NICU nurses, I was able to take care of Scarlett all by myself. I had been looking forward to days like these. That’s not to say I didn’t have my worries. But thanks to the wonderful UMC NICU staff, I had been well “trained” on what to do in case things got a little hairy.
The days were fairly smooth and easy…when she slept, I slept – We slept. 😉 Jk. I had a “newborn” on my hands – I wasn’t getting any sleep! lol Like any other mom, I spent most of my time changing diapers, prepping bottles, feeding, and washing bottles. Change. Feed. Wash. Repeat. You get the idea. My mom and Luis (a.k.a Popo) were almost always at work, so most days we had the house to ourselves. Visitors were far and few between. We were still in Flu/RSV season and everyone respected our boundaries. Healthy = a visit & Scarlett snuggles.  Unhealthy = Love us from a distance.
When our families would visit I would get a “break” and was able to shower and feed myself lol. Which was AWESOME! You don’t realize how amazing those things are until you wind up skipping a few meals and start to smell like baby poop. They are such a godsend! They stepped up and learned Scarlett’s routine in order to alleviate some of the work Scarlett required lol. I’ve said it a thousand times and I’ll say it a million times more. OUR VILLAGE ROCKS! Seriously.
Laura stealing Scarlett cuddles so Mom could “nap” (aka clean lol)
Tia Stephanie & Tia Mo helping with the nighttime routine
Night times were a little more challenging. BJ would continue to travel back and forth from Andrews to Lubbock, which meant I was something like a single mom. (Kudos to ALL of you full-time single parents. Raising a small human on your own ain’t easy!)  On the weekends, we would take turns getting up with Scarlett during the night which worked out…for the most part. However, two grown adults sharing a twin bed wasn’t exactly comfortable…so neither one of us was getting much sleep. Yet, somehow, we managed. At the time, I think BJ & I were in “survival mode” and just did what we had to do to make things work. We didn’t take a single thing for granted. After all, we had already been blessed beyond measure. Scarlett slept in a pack’n’play that was given to us by our dear friend Shannon. Which made things SO much easier! With Scarlett on oxygen support, she would constantly need her pulse ox monitor on. The pack’n’play made it THAT much easier for us to pick her up/move her without having to thread or untangle all of her wirings. I highly recommend using one of these for your own little one in the beginning.
Her first post NICU appointment would be with her pediatrician, two weeks after her release. That day was one of my most anxious days of all.
From our Facebook Group 1 1/2 years ago.
I took Scarlett to her first appointment today; and I’ll be honest with you – I was really nervous about it. Just like any first time mom, I felt all of the anxiousness you feel when it’s time to take your new baby on their first outing. I had all of these questions and worries flooding my mind. What time should I leave? Will we be there on time? Am I going to the right place? Do I have enough diapers? Do I need to pack extra clothes? And the list goes on and on and on…
And then on top of all of THAT, I felt the nervousness new moms, of a preemie, feel and all of THOSE worries and questions that come to mind. How am I going to carry Scarlett AND all of her equipment? Will I need to take all of her medicines with me? Do I give her medicines now or wait until after the appointment? What if the battery goes out on her monitor? What if her tubing gets snagged somewhere and I don’t know how to fix it? And on and on and on…
Needless to say – I was one very anxious and overwhelmed mess of a momma this morning. (And don’t get my started on how my night went, especially, with our little rain storm)
I made a plan. I had a list. I tried my best to be prepared.
So I when woke Scarlett up this morning to start our morning routine, (change diaper, feed Scarlett, give Scarlett her breathing treatment…) God surprised me and put my worries at ease. I walked past my moms room, like I have every morning since we came home, and instead of it being empty, my mom was in her bed. She was waiting for me to wake her up so she could help and go with us today.
We went to her appointment and it was great! We got there okay, and after a little adventure (called being lost), with some help we found our way. I met with Scarlett’s pediatrician – she’s nice, I REALLY like her. But she gave me a lot of information and in the end I felt overwhelmed yet again. I forget that even though Scarlett is out of the hospital, she still has a ways to go before she is caught up with other babies her age. There are things that I as her mother have to do to help her get there. So when we came home I was kind of feeling down in dumps. I just felt worried all over again because I want to make sure Scarlett is taken care of and that I am doing the best that I can for her.
I don’t know about you, but to me that’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself – but I tend to do that sometimes. I have worried so much about Scarlett, her health and wanting to do what is best for her. That I sometimes forget to stop and ask God to help me. I forget to ask him to take these worries from me. When I opened my bible app today, I was searching for a new devotional to follow and I saw my favorite bible verse. Isaiah 40:31 And in that moment I felt an instant relief. I laughed at myself; because in all of my worrying, even though I forgot to ask for Gods help, he saw what I needed and he provided for me – like he always has. He never ceases to remind me of his constant love.
1st Doctors Appointment
I know this new season of life will challenge me again. Now that Scarlett is home there are new obstacles to face and overcome. But only by Gods grace and love will we be able to get through it. We just have to take things one day at a time and remember to pray.
So with all of that being said – Scarlett is 8lbs 9oz and 20.5in long! She’ll have a weight check appointment next week. We will see her pediatrician every 2 weeks (until we decide otherwise) and She has an eye appointment on Friday. Please pray that we get good results like we have been.
Thank you all for your love. And I hope this helped you in some way. If you are struggling with something or just needed a reminder of Gods love. Know that he is always ready and waiting.
“…the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. The Lord is a faithful God…” – Isaiah 30:18
Looking back at this I can’t help but be PROUD of myself for being strong and BRAVE enough to talk about my feelings. It’s scary to open up and be 100% honest with not just yourself but the world!
While life after NICU was ANYTHING but normal and easy, I am so grateful that God provided for us time and time again. It’s hard being a new parent and learning to take care of someone else. But it’s just a “tad” bit harder when your child requires a lot of special attention. Yes, we are blessed that SO MANY things went RIGHT for Scarlett. But that doesn’t mean our struggles weren’t real. I’m still dealing with my PTSD and taking things one day at a time. But if sharing our story will help any of you other NICU parents, I am so happy about that!
I hope that you can learn to find balance too and always know that no matter how hard the struggle is, you are NEVER alone.
Epilogue: Balancing Act – Life after NICU After Scarlett's grand escape from NICU, she and I didn’t immediately go home. Home for us is actually 2 hours away in Andrews, Tx.

Drake is the cream of the crop in the rap game, but questions have been asked of his abilities lately and he provides adequate answers on ''Scorpion''.
Adversities either breaks or make a man and for Drake, he utilises his dark moments to create a radiant project in 'Scorpion'.
Drake had started the year as the heavyweight boxer in the ring, and despite the best attempts by the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole at shooting for the throne, deft moves like giving out the entire budget for his videos for 'God's Plan' and the star-studded 'Nice For What', ensured that the belt was tightly wrapped around his waist.
But everything changed in May when Pusha T reignited a long feud by baiting him on Infrared from his long-awaited Kanye West produced Daytona album.
Fired up, Drake released a response in Duppy Freestyle barely 24 hours after the album was officially out, his reply was a deep punch that struck the right the right nerves and landed Pusha a well-struck punch.
ALSO READ: Album Review of Nas's album, Nasir
But everything changed with The Story of Adidon, Pusha went personal, he had unearthed Drake's secrets, touched on his family and landed a knockout punch that was way below the belt.
This had fans excited, their heavyweight rapper was about to rise up and land his own blows, but Drake never did, he laid with his face in the ring, while the Referee counted away.
Hip-hop don, J Prince had attempted a reason for this, people began to insinuate that this could turn bloody, but the truth is Pusha had won the battle, at least this round of it, now it was time to focus on the war.
Of what use is a Scorpion when it cannot sting?
Friday, June 29, Drake released his fifth solo studio album, Scorpion, the album has two sides, Side A contains 12 songs which cater for his rap fans, while the B Side is filled with 13 RnB songs, so this review will be broken into two parts, with this part focusing on the Side A.
Scorpion shines bright, as he maintains the same concept and delivery styles that worked for him on his early projects, but this time there is an edge to his delivery, a new hunger that makes it more lethal.
The album features previously unreleased material with Michael Jackson and the late Static Major, a verse from Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, TY Dolla $ign and Future.
'Survival 'and 'Nonstop' open the doors into Scorpion, on the former, he touches lightly on his industry beefs and how he is the cream of the crop, while the latter sees him demanding for respect like Lebron.
But it is on 'Elevate', where it begins to get really exciting as Drake is intricate with his lyrics, this is the ultimate demonstration of his newfound level of domination.
''Couldn't picture wifing Braden when I was pumping gas on road trips to go from Cincinnati on to Dayton, I couldn't gauge it, I wanna thank God for working way harder than Satan, He's playing favourites, it feels amazing (yeah)''
'Emotionless' is the reason why we have been waiting for this album with heightened expectations in the past few weeks, as in contrast to the title, Drake lets his emotions out as he addresses the issues raised by Pusha T on his ''Story of Adidion'' diss, with the blessings of a Mariah Carey sample.
''I wasn't hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid, from empty souls who just wake up and looked to debate, Until you starin' at your seed, you can never relate''.
Previously released singles, God's Plan, which topped the charts following its release, and I'm Upset are lined up immediately after.
There is the bragging Drake on '8 out of 10', ''I been on top for three sets of three years'', Mob Ties and Can't Take A Joke is Trap Music with Southern flavour.
''Sandra's Rose'' is one of the most enjoyable moments on the project.
Drake delivers a track that is the very essence of what brought him to this great heights as he makes the beat fall back while he just raps from his soul, there are more names dropped on this song than on a line assembly.
From Sandra (A perceived reference to his mother's name, Sandi, to Charmalagne, Mohamed Hadid, Adele, Amber Rose and more), this is a line by line dissection of his story.
Jay Z appears on ''Talk Up'' and the duo indeed Talk it up, this is a smart move as the duo have also been involved in a beef in the past, but with Pusha's association with Kanye, it was only wise he aligns with another top-shot in Hov.
No one brags like Jay Z and he reigns 'Supreme' (No pun intended) on this, ''Niggas would be like Young, I got your President tweeting, I won't even meet with him, Y'all killed X and let Zimmerman live, Streets is done''.
Drake is imposing on ''Is There More'' as he closes the Side A gloriously while acknowledging there is more music on the R&B part.
It has been a year of great albums, rap has flourished under the Kanye West album series and the unannounced invasion of Everything Is Love by Hip hop's power couple, Hov and Bey but Scorpion, as expected, doesn't get lost in the numbers.
There is a plea, a raw one at-times mixed with relatable, catchy and re-energised edge in Drake's lyrics, even when he is bragging.
Scorpion is not Take Care or Nothing Was The Same, but it is a beautiful masterpiece that even when it does not totally wipe out the cut that Pusha placed on his abilities, it is an album that keeps the crown on his head and reminds doubters of the greatness of the man from Toronto when he is in the zone.

LISTEN to Snow Patrol's "I Won't Let You Go" from the #DIVERGENT soundtrack!
Now is your chance to listen to Snow Patrol’s song from the Divergent soundtrack “I won’t let you go”.
Without giving in to hyperbole, there may be no film as epically anticipated in 2014, en masse, as Divergent. The post-apocalyptic series has all the makings of a major event, including the die-hard following, an incredibly capable star, intense and dramatic teenage love, and a whole heap of…

She won’t call until I call. She won't text most times until I text. She always wants me to apologize even when she is the one who has done wrong.
Dear Bukky,
I have been dating this girl for over a year, though I’m not perfect and there have been times when I wronged her, and I asked for forgiveness and there were also times she wronged me, too.
But she always claims that she loves me but I don't see it. I complain and she tells me she loves me but she just doesn't like showing it.
She won’t call until I call. She won't text most times until I text. She always wants me to apologize even when she is the one who has done wrong. She always nags, every time she walks up to me and tells me it's over and I will beg her only for her to then say, she didn't mean it.
She belittles me all the time. Last week we had just a minor misunderstanding, and she walked into my room and told me it’s over. I was very angry and I told her to leave. I called and she said that I am meant to apologize because I walked her out of my room.
I love this girl so, so much but she does not show a single fact that she loves me, since that incident she just called that day which I missed due to the fact that I was mad at her after that day she never called or even send a text.
I was the one calling and asking why she could not even check on me after she hurt me.
Please I need your advice on what to do because I can't simply get my mind off this girl, but it seems I’m on a wrong path. ___________
Dear reader,
Yes, you guessed right – you are indeed on a wrong path.
Love is not meant to be that way. That’s toxic behavior, and healthy relationships do not roll like that.
See, if we all had to date everyone we loved, it would be a mad disaster. Love alone is not enough. How about compatibility and the synergy between you and the person you claim to love. How good are they fr your peace of mind?
This woman sounds like someone who is not good for you. I do not know the extent of your relations with her so I can’t be sure of how you treat her back. But if this email is anything to go by, I don’t think this is a relationship to continue except something changes very quickly, and permanently.
Constantly playing the ‘breakup game’ is bad and you should communicate this to her, alongside your need for more healthy displays of love from her.
If she’s always doing that and refuses to change even after that communication, please, for the sake of your sanity, quit that relationship, for good.
It does not matter how far you have gone on a wrong path, keeping at it won’t take you to your destination. It is wiser to turn back and take the right path. ____________
Do you want to talk about your love life, marriage or family issues?
Do you have burning questions that you would love to get answers to?
Just send a mail to [email protected] and I'll provide the most honest answers to them anonymously.
Note; the chances of getting a quick response reduces if the text in your email has a lot of abbreviations. So, please write as properly as possible.
So, why not send that mail today and let's talk about it?
A problem shared is a problem half-solved!

It wasn't always that way. For the first 34 years of his life, the entrepreneur and co-founder of Reddit let his business take priority over his physical wellbeing.
Lots of guys make excuses to skip the gym, but Alexis Ohanian isn't one of them.
It wasn't always that way. For the first 34 years of his life, the entrepreneur and co-founder of Reddit let his business take priority over his physical wellbeing.
He took pride in his ability to run on minimal sleep and staring at screens for days on end.
But during the 2017 Australian Open in Melbourne, when Ohanian learned that he and wife Serena Williams were going to be parents, he decided it was time to start thinking about his health for once.
"I knew I needed to start taking my fitness seriously," Ohanian said in the days leading up to Father's Day, his first since the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia. The new dad - who's partnering with Johnnie Walker to celebrate the exciting milestone - opened up to MensHealth.com about his healthy lifestyle transformation.
 Getting started in the gym
"My first step was - literally - a step down to the gym at the hotel we were staying at in Melbourne, and just picking up the free weights again," Ohanian explained. "I like strength training because it feels very efficient, and it's different enough to distract me."
He couldn't say the same about running on the treadmill or riding the bike. (Hey, he isn't alone.) "I was very anti-cardio for a really long time," Ohanian confessed. "I’d say about six months ago, my wife - who knows a thing or two about fitness - finally convinced me."
The hardest part about cardio is keeping himself interested.
"I have tried everything, from an app that lets you pretend there are zombies chasing after you, to just downloading my favorite TV shows on my phone," he said. "If you're watching my wife's Instagram or Snapchats, you'll see she finds some really inopportune times to catch me on my phone while I'm in the gym."
The muscle he loves and hates to work out
These days, Ohanian's workouts start and end with 10 minutes of cardio to get his heart pumping, but they mostly involve free weights, and occasionally some machines. "I'm a pretty basic, straightforward dude," he says.
Ohanian did put his trainer, Tim, on one very specific mission: "I needed to be able to impress Serena with my glutes."
Tim accepted the challenge, crafting a killer lower body routine for his client. It features a fair amount of hip thrusts - a popular move that works your glutes without overloading your back.
"They're awful and awesome," Ohanian said. "I hate doing them, but I love doing them."
Have the results been noticeable?
"You should ask my wife that."
Hitting the gym with Serena Williams
The pair sometimes hit the gym together, especially when they're traveling. But when asked if he and Williams do couples' workouts, Ohanian made one thing very clear: "She's too serious to work out with me."
He doesn't mind.
"The nice thing is, she's the G.O.A.T., and I don't work in her industry - it's obviously not a competition, because she won," he said. "I find it both liberating and motivating. I'm free to be the best me, and she's free to be the best her."
He can't compete - but he still tries to impress her
"I'll flirt with her from across the gym," Ohanian said.
His go-to move? The tricep pulldown. Ohanian explained exactly how he deploys it in an attempt to woo his wife:
"If you get pretty deep into the workout there... you're like 45 minutes in, and you're kind of glistening a little bit, and you're in the sleeveless shirt, and you hit that tricep pulldown... I'll look over - it's so obnoxious - I'll look over and flirt with her, and she'll roll her eyes. It's always the same thing. I'm sure she's tired of it by now. She hasn't said anything - she indulges me."
Now that's love.
 His goal for 2018? Getting a six-pack.
Between Williams and Tim, his trainer, Ohanian says there's a plan in place for washboard abs by the end of the year.
"Believe me, when I see that first little outline of a six-pack, I'll be raising a glass and toasting a little bit of Blue Label to celebrate," he said.
He'll be celebrating a lot of milestones in the near future - and not just in the evolution of his abs.
"It feels like the chances that I have now to celebrate are even better," he said. "As much as I loved my first 34 years, when I was basically just living for me, I'm really excited for my next 34 years as I'm living for this house - for this family."
