I remember back when The Mountain Goats No Children was a meme on here seeing a post that went “I hope you live, i hope we both live,” and it making me SO angry…
And this was before I had ever even listened to the song (or anything by TMG for that matter), but now, knowing that John wrote the song, and specifically the line “I hope you die, I hope we both die” in response to radio overplay of the sugary sweet I Hope You Dance, I feel even more vindicated, because like.
Yes. Ultimately my overall life philosophy is that I hope we all live… I would hope that goes without saying. But No Children isn’t a life philosophy. It’s about how sometimes everything sucks and you feel like shit and trapped and hopeless and angry and I HOPE YOU DIE, I HOPE WE BOTH DIE!!!!!!!!! And who can’t relate to that? Who has NEVER felt like that in their lives??????
I feel a little silly accusing what was ultimately just a joke meme post of Toxic Positivity, but that was the vibe I was getting from it, which is why it made me mad. As though it was sticking up its nose at a song it clearly had no understanding of and going “well I hope we both LIVE 😇😇” and like. Fuck you lol. It’s okay to feel negative emotions. It’s okay to be angry.

Im afraid that there was NOTHING normal about the 7th Japanese XYZ ending (Kirakira sung by Yūki Kaji).

This is just something stupid I wanted to sketch
So today I’ve been listening to “New Divide” by Linkin Park, because it worked its way back into my head, and so I was going to draw, but all I could think about was someone singing it. And because the Strawberry Jam Sword has been on my brain, but also I’ve been thinking about retconning things, I decided why not draw the Sovereign of Darkness passionately singing Linkin Park?
I drew it without the shoulder pads just because they’d look weird, but honestly regardless, just looking at this drawing, god they look like such an edge lord, it’s hilarious
You know, it really messes with my interpretation of the Sovereign being this entity that even the other members of the Cookies of Darkness are afraid of, because it’s clearly not a Cookie, but they also don’t know what it is, just this…unnatural entity. But here it’s discovered Linkin Park and is a passionate fan
But honestly, who cares. Maybe the Sovereign can become another member of BAD 4
But yeah, just take this stupid sketch that I probably put too much effort into

working on a short post (…maybe? look. anyone following me knows what my version of short looks like, when it comes to media analysis) about why from a structural/implications level, i don’t love the read that ed’s desire to throw a talent show is an indication he needs to be brought down to earth by any means necessary
(ft why that read also makes that scene between ed and lucius in the blanket fort sort of… narratively atonal in a way that also strips it of the poignance of connection)

I really do think the Cady in the Movie of the Musical of the Movie Mean Girls is funny and engaging, but. Like. In the movie, Cady is only really naive in the sense that she has not been exposed to Girl World (or the arbitrary institutional unpleasantness of the typical American high school). She would be perfectly functional in a rational environment, and in many ways she begins as the kind of girl that many parents would have wanted their daughters to be circa 2004 (from progressive bohemians to moderate conservatives still practical enough to want academic/professional success for their daughters). She’s smart, friendly to everyone, and not neurotic about body image. She’s drawn into Girl World because it’s attractive despite the bullshit. And there is a rhetorical purpose to this that just gets dulled if Cady is genuinely immature and out to lunch —if, when her mom worries that it was the wrong decision to send her to a big school, you’re like “yes, obviously” rather than “well, I wouldn’t have predicted that she’d get drawn in an elaborate revenge plot, either.”
