Why Wen is the best adult on Moonlight Chicken

This show had four weeks to make its impact and boy did it! I will be the first to admit that when the show started I was verryyyy ready to hate Wen. The trailers and first few made very clear implications that were meant to be picked up by the audience. I was extremely happy that they subverted it. But i think even if they hadn't i would love Wen. It is some great complex character writing (and no, he doesn't have to be messy for him to be complex, fight me).

When we first see Wen we get a hint that he is not necessarily in the best place in life. He's still doing pretty well for himself, but he's looking for something. I will preface this by saying, Wen is still flawed. How he handled the situation with Alan left much to be desired.

But the reason why I will stand by Wen is because he makes it a point to keep his mess separate from the rest of the characters as well as he can. Jim, Alan and Wen are the only ones who are even involved in their relationship drama, and that is by design.

Wen's interactions with Li Ming especially are proof to this. He has absolutely no reason to help this kid. But he did. And you cannot tell me he wouldn't adopt Li Ming and Heart in an instant even if Jim and Wen never got together.

My favourite choice about this is that it would have been sooooo easy to use Wen and Li Ming's interactions as a means to make him more attractive in Jim's eyes. But never once in the show did they do that (🥲 let me take this time again to thank P'Aof. Sir. You are everything 🤌🏼)

This moment

This was the exact moment I was like, yeah. He is gonna be the best mentor to Li Ming (and maybe Heart).

He is not afraid to ask for advice, but is smart enough to not take the advice at face value. He never pushed his drama onto anyone else. His relationship with Alan exists in isolation with his relationship to Jim (much to Alan's disappointment) but when push comes to shove he still chose to stay by Alan because he had no one else to take care of him at the time.

He gives Jim all the time he needs to adjust to Wen. He is nothing more than a gentle nudge in the "ik you were hurt, but find it in you to let me in" agenda. He understands that Jim needs that time and let's him set the pace.

He recognises Kaipa needs someone and for that someone to be Jim (credit where credit is due for Jim doing the same thing with Wen and Alan) and not once questioning his own security in that undefined space Wen and Jim are in.

I will admit, i have a Mix bias. But it is impossible to disagree that this is probably the best role he's played to date. Both in acting and characterization. He is the most well realised character Mix has played.

I just love Wen okay 😭

Man im so conflicted about totk. I really enjoy playing it like a fucking lot, every new scene and memory was fascinating to me. But mostly because it was something new, and once i started to connect them and think about it, the more evident it is that for the developers the priority was the game play first, and then the story.

It feels so lacking, i dont know, im not asking for a shakespearean drama, but that good vs bad kinda stoy gets a bit old after like 30 years.

And i dont mean it because i want a good ganondorf or something like that, but because it would be great to know why the fuck he is such a bitch about hyrule, other than oh he bad hyrule good. I loved how oot had some serious implications about the shitty stuff the hyrule kingdom did, use that shit! Here it is just like yay we good friends with everyone, this gerudo dude is just an asshole, and it makes ganondorf look so damn plain because his reason to make a mess in hyrule is just im bad and power hungry, and im going to fix something thats not broken, just like in the other 3 games.

I didnt like botw ganon, but it was more interesting to me a dude that became a destructive force of nature for unknow (on that time) reasons. It got me like bitch, what is your problem? who hurt you? But no, he was just petty.

I dont have problems with villains being bad for no particular reason, but when you tell the same story again, and again, it gets a little old and tired. Specially after waiting for like 6 years to know wtf is going to happen next.

And this conflicts me even more, because you have no idea how fucking much i still enjoyed every second on screen of totk ganondorf 😭. His deliver was ~ chef kiss 🤌💕~ fucking awesome, but his reasons were, at this point, lacking for me u.u

I honestly find the scene of kiara being taken by the kitty hawk hard to watch. The acting, dialogue, music, the IMPLICATIONS, everything.

What other scenes are hard for you to watch? Any scenes with Luke and JJ for sure make me uncomfy. I remember watching when Luke hits JJ in the car after bailing him out in season 1 for the first time, I was so shocked

Omg anon 😭 Sorry it took me a while to get to this, but I absolutely agree! That whole part is devastating and Madison Bailey acted the HELL out of that scene. The car scene with Luke really shocked me too (and still does!)

So many scenes hit SO HARD for me! Two scenes off the top of my head that really stand out are ofc the hot tub scene and the dock scene when Luke leaves OBX. I don't know if I'd say it's hard for me to watch them per se since I've watched them ad nauseam aklsdjkfj but as far as the emotional gut punch, these shatter me no matter how many times I see them!

The hot tub scene: the look of horror and shock on Kiara's face, JJ completely unraveling in real time, like he's rapidly losing his ability to pretend/conceal and it's just slkfdjsldkfj it's SO upsetting 😭 The I just wanna do the right thing - I know, I know....oh god. I could sit in a dark room and think about that for the rest of time. The soulmatism in that scene is insane...Kiara knowing instinctively what he needs and her "I know" is just....she sees him.

The dock scene with Luke absolutely destroys me on SO many levels. The father/son of it all, Luke saying he doesn't try to do the things he does it just happens naturally, that he could've been better, that JJ's got a good heart...I really think he believes those things. It doesn't mean he has the capacity to do better though. And the jiara of it all - JJ calling Kiara his "everything" perhaps coming to terms with the gravity of that - seen later with "you're it." Kiara knowing instinctively what he needs when she comes to him at the end of the dock. Absolutely amazing, all of it 🤌

I love Jimmy/Samis friendship but there's just something 🤌🤌🤌 about Jey/Sami. Like the way Jey played that once he accepted sami that way he looks at him, interacts him, hugs him (especially after that tag match my HEART ). There's just a chemistry there, it's like lightning in a bottle and they CANT walk away from this story once the fued is over.

it's the fact jey said the one time he let his guard down for someone he thought he loved him. the one time. the implication that he finds it difficult to open up but wanted to trust in sami so much that he allowed himself to be vulnerable around him. 😭😭😭😭 i love jimmy and sami's friendship but in a oh they're bros type of way. jey and sami's is just so complex beyond that after everything they went through to get to the point they were at before it all went wrong. 😔😔

Hey girlie,

First off, I’m really sorry to hear about your job! Considering how much you loved it, it’s probably going to suck for a while but try to remain positive. sorry if this is too cringe and cheesy to say but I’m certain that as this door closes, for someone with as much talent as you, the world is only going to open doors.

I’d love to help you out by letting you know the parts of your writing I’ve enjoyed ready the most.

I know you’re already aware but you have a real talent for writing conversations, the back and forth banter. Anytime max and the reader are squabbling is highly entertaining. I love when max deliberately tries to rile up the reader but boy does he have a slap in the face heading his way.

I know I won’t be alone in telling you what a good job you’ve done with Kaia. I love how sassy, resilient, stubborn and sure of herself she is. Any interaction between her and dan are always the best (now you’ve got that cute “drive fast uncle Daniel” moment from the ausgp as inspo 🥹).

The part in the story so far that I remember most fondly is the night (maybe the first night) the reader, max and kaia spend together. When max just shows up with kaia bundled in a blanket. I love when the reader migrated to max’s bed and then how much they secretly loved it. I love when Daniel shows up to go for a run and his reaction to what he stumbles in on.

Going back further, I love how feisty the reader is and how she’s not afraid to give it to j*s verstappen or horner for that matter. When she goes to smack j*s to next century 🤌 keep that attitude coming.

I don’t know what way you’re going to go with the relationship between max and the reader, but I’m excited to read more happy domesticity. Maybe the reader observing max being really paternal or doing something really sweet with kaia. And then the reader feeling full of love at the sight she’s witnessing. And then the emotional turmoil that will inevitably ensue when she realises the enormity of her feelings because a. her and max obviously have negative history so a second go at the relationship is already risky and b. now there’s a child involved, one the reader has come to love very deeply so not only does she risk losing max but kaia as well. Could she even survive such a loss? But is it even possible to resist now? Will it even be possible for the reader to continue being platonic with max and not assume a mother like role to kaia? fuck has she got herself a predicament.

Whilst I love that Daniel is mostly in this story for his interactions with kaia and the comic relief it provides, I think it would be really cool to see him catch max and the reader perhaps getting carried away and acting inappropriately/not within kaia’s best interest, and him getting fucking serious/kinda furious with them for fucking with kaia’s emotions without really thinking things through first. Like protective!dan pls. Like we know dan is a ball of sunshine 90% of the time but give me some of that punching trailer room wall energy 🥵. Like I feel like they’ll lean into the fake dating personas but inevitably dan will catch them acting up behind closed doors.

Anyway sorry for the essay, I realise you asked for what we’ve loved reading not what we’d love to read, so please take my thoughts with a grain of salt! Whatever you have in store for us going to be incredible so please disregard what I’ve said if it’s not where you’re going with the story.

Their first night all together is my favorite part of TOU to date, I loved how it came out so much so I’m really glad to know others feel the same way!! There will definitely be some really sweet domesticity coming, there’s a scene in chapter 13 that I really fucking adore for its emotional implications and the reader being mistaken as her mother 😌 not to mention what that does to Max…

I agree with you it would be really beneficial to see Daniel step up into that roll and defend Kaia and her best interest… and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for suggesting it because it’s the missing piece for a scene in chapter 13 I’ve been stuck on for a while!!! I’m now thinking a little Dan POV action and stepping up into that Uncle role in a new way is exactly what the doctor prescribed!
