hi! want to experience all the highs and lows of IYR/RTG (IF YOU REGRET / RESET THE GAME) but have no idea where to start or what Lyn and I are even going on about? no problem! here's a starter pack/summary post that'll get you up to speed in no time 💫

the tldr is that it's a roleswap AU where Haru is the protag and Ann is the traitor. the "not long enough; need more context" (doesn't roll off the tongue quite like tldr though) is below the read more!!

NOTE: this AU contains spoilers for both vanilla Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. you've been warned!

most of the information for the AU is very neatly summed up (and comes with extremely good art by Lyn) in this thread on Lyn's twitter. below is more of a neat recap containing some plot points and stuff that you can use for reference or whatever.

what does IYR/RTG mean?

it means "if you regret, reset the game" and is a lyric from the song Axe to Grind from Persona 5 Strikers! it's a reference to how the roleswap is essentially a 'reset' of the canon game.

how did the AU come about?

two years ago I (Ash) posted a silly tweet about a roleswap AU "but it's just the Thieves put in a randomiser" and Lyn saw traitor!Ann and went wild. anyway two years passed and we're now back working together to make the AU a reality! sort of! we're not Maruki! maybe!

new plot changes!

Kawakami now works at Crossroads part-time rather than the maid service. there is no maid service in IYR/RTG.

Crossroads is also the place where Haru winds up spending most of her time due to the high number of confidants there and their lax rules about having birds in the bar

there's also a new waitress at Crossroads called Ren!

Shido is a complete nobody in the AU and is not relevant to the plot at all

the confidants that have been swapped out are either dead (sorry Sae) or they no longer need their confidant chain doing due to the lack of Shido in the AU

Ohya is now having a great time with her reporting partner and probably drinks a somewhat reasonable amount now maybe

Haru's dad is alive and well and still a complete asshole

Ryuji is fine :) stop asking questions about him :)

@crescentmoonteas has been a friend for a while, so I wanted to write something for their Persona 5 AU, “If You Regret, Reset the Game.”

Inspired by this tweet.

She’s underwater.

Everything is tinged a deep blue color that slowly bleeds into black the further it goes out. She’s so deep that, as much as she twists and turns, she doesn’t know which way is up. She can’t see the sun.

There are schools of fish in the distance, and beyond them are lone, murky shapes, swimming in solitude. Bigger fish.

She passes by a reef. Or maybe a cliff, the edge of a sea floor pit. There’s seaweed growing out of the sides.

There’s a shape out of the corner of her eye. She contorts her floating body to face the curious fish that’s swum out to meet her.

She shouldn’t have turned.

It isn’t a fish.

She comes face to face with her father’s sunken corpse. She jumps, her arms come up to defend herself, her hands smack against the body. It’s immovable. She just pushes herself backwards, spinning with the motion, and her arm gets tangled in the seaweed behind her.

Shouldn’t have pushed him away.

She pulls and thrashes and struggles to get out of the trap, but the more she moves, the more it winds itself around her fingers, her hand, her arm, pulling her closer. She tries to move through the water and swim away — it doesn’t help. The seaweed wraps around her shoulder, her chest, her neck.

Something brushes against her foot. She has just enough freedom to look down and see her sister’s bloated corpse. She reflexively gasps, but the moment her mouth opens, water floods in and down her throat.

Shouldn’t have opened your mouth.

The water reaches her lungs. She’s drowning. The seaweed constricts her throat. She can’t scream. The pressure of the depths pounds at her head. Her vision is growing blearier and blearier. Everything in the sea is losing focus, becoming fuzzier and indistinct.

Everything but the corpses.

Their faces are stuck in a rictus of anger. They condemn her every action, revile her every moment. Useless, they call her. Burdensome. Beloathed. It’s your fault, they tell her, as is their right. She pushed him away into a violent gang war he had no reason to be involved in. She opened her mouth and leeched at her life and she died at her desk from overwork.

Your fault.

All your fault!

DROWN FOR YOUR SINS!

Makoto wakes.

Her fingers are tangled in her hair again, she can’t remove them without hurting her head. Slowly, she moves her hand closer to her head and begins the delicate process of freeing herself without tearing her hair from her scalp. She mostly succeeds. Along with the torn strands, her fingers come out covered in dirt and grime.

If nothing else, she should wash her hair.

And so Makoto goes, not so much sliding out of bed as she oozes out of it, slow and graceless. She plods along her apartment floor and reaches the bathroom. She reaches to the right and flicks on the light.

Okay. Now for the hard part.

Slowly, minutely, step by hesitating step, Makoto approaches the shower. She reaches the tub, her toes grazing against the acrylic. Her hand comes up to chest level,

and slowly

reaches

for the fau—

ALL YOUR FAULT!

Makoto snatches her hand back. It falls to the side, landing on the matchbook she keeps on the bathroom counter. She grabs it, steps over and sits inside of the dry tub, and lights a match.

Fire can’t exist inside water.

As long as this match is lit, she isn’t drowning.

hi same anon as before, i'd love to hear more about the plot you have planned out so far!

and I would love to tell you about it!! be aware this contains spoilers for both Persona 5 Royal and the AU itself, so I'm putting it under a read more just in case

okay so this is a very loose/rough plot outline because it's still changing and being confirmed (I literally changed Makoto's palace like 10 minutes ago) BUT

edit: I FORGOT MY BOY RYUJI........... RYUJI I AM SO SORRY........... timeline now updated to include Ryuji!

story opens with Haru talking to Wakaba about the exploits of the PTs (same framing device as Sae talking to Joker)

flashback to Haru arriving in Tokyo to start her probation

Sojiro is like "grumble grumble kids these days and their *checks notes* haha you kicked a guy in the balls? that's rad. anyway don't do it again"

first day of school

Haru meets Sumi

Sumi's like "I KNOW WHERE SCHOOL IS SENPAI"

surprise: school is now Madarame's palace (same art gallery kind of theme, thinking of having waxworks instead of paintings and it's highly implied the waxworks are just the cognitive versions of students that have been dipped in wax)

Sumi's like "OKAY MAYBE I DON'T KNOW WHERE SCHOOL IS SENPAI"

anyway blah blah awaken Haru's persona

meet Goro who's stuck and about to be taxidermied (chrome spellcheck told me this was wrong and it was actually taxidermised but apparently you can use both. this is irrelevant to the plot I'm just letting everyone know what I learnt today) by Madarame

save Goro, learn about persona, etc etc

decide best way to get Yusuke to fess up is by stealing his diary

steal the poor man's diary

Haru takes it back to Leblanc and tries to open it

Goro is no help because he's like WE HAVE NO LOCKPICKS!!! WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO!!! PECK IT OPEN?!

Akira (works part-time at Leblanc) is like "hi :) let me get that for you" *opens diary*

(Akira is the one who teaches Haru about infiltration tools)

meet Ryuji at some point. he's the new track star at Shujin!

anyway. something something awaken Sumi's persona, recruit Yusuke, awaken his persona, everyone gets a persona,

defeat Madarame

yay

go to Kosei to attend a volleyball game

Haru learns who Ann and Futaba are

[the second palace belongs to the guy who runs the eSports team that Futaba is on. I have yet to really nail these details so let's just skip forward]

Futaba: persona awakened, joins the team, hooray!

Futaba promotes the PTs by claiming they're sponsoring her. she puts their logo on her gamer jacket and all.

third palace is Principal Kobayakawa whose name I can never spell correctly from memory so apologies in advance

Kobayakawa has tasked our poor little meow meow Morgana, who is literally just a first year hall monitor with big dreams, with finding out what's going on with students getting jobs and shady deals

Morgana: panic.mp4

the PTs decide to go and change Kobayakawa's heart because tbh he's a bit of a dick

Morgana: persona awakened, joins the team, hooray!

important note: they do NOT find out about Kaneshiro or any of that. however, Kaneshiro is mysteriously taken down anyway.

Haru gets a text that's like "hello pls change my heart. I am literally dying. here's my address pls bring Big Bang Burger if you're coming" (that's a joke) (maybe)

the address leads to an apartment complex and Makoto lives on the very top floor. she's basically barricaded in and the state of her apartment probably violates every single health code

her rent/bills were set to auto-pay but the money's running out

they find out the auto-pay was set up by Sae before she died while out on a mission

"hey this apartment kinda looks like a lighthouse huh-"

MAKOTO'S OWN PALACE TIME

Makoto's palace is an abandoned lighthouse on a deserted island

the water level is rising and there's a leviathan nearby threatening to kill them

the PTs need to get through her palace and change her heart before they all drown/get eaten

pls look at this tweet by Jazzy for Makoto's palace and persona refs!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway. save Makoto, reconciliation with Sae, wooo Makoto is a PT now and she's the nav so Goro can finally stop guessing everything wildly

fifth palace belongs to Akira's dad who owns a wildly successful modelling company (that happens to be the same one Ann belongs to! what a coincidence)

Akira is engaged to Mika and the deadline for their wedding is approaching

(note: Mika isn't a complete bastard in the AU like Haru's fiance - she keeps her own personality!)

Akira's dad's palace is a factory where the models are the product

something something something. have yet to decide if Akira's dad dies like Haru's. remind me to ask Jazzy about this when we start designing that bit of the AU

Jazzy mentioned having both Akira's parents as bosses in the palace so we're doing that!!!

cognitive Akira is like a Barbie doll - he's trapped in a plastic box and he's not allowed out lest the world damages their perfect little darling <3

(hitting cognitive Akira turns him into damaged goods)

sixth palace is Wakaba's

she asks the PTs to explore her palace in the name of COGNITIVE PSIENCE!!!!!

Haru still gets apprehended and arrested by the antisocial force after and they fake her death like oh no, the PTs aren't together anymore. what a shame. anyway,

Seventh palace is Kamoshida

Ann gets her engine room moment (keeping this under wraps because the ideas Jazzy had were AMAZING and I don't want to spoil them)

Kamoshida goes down in FLAAAAMMEEESSSSSSSSS

I can tell you! :D also thank you omg! Ophelia means a lot to me as a character and honestly I was just like WE NEED HER!!!! I AM PUTTING HER IN!!!!

all the personas in the roleswap AU are ones which have an element of either tragedy or strife to them, whether it's in their lore or their personality!

I've listed them below in the format of "[first persona] + [seconds persona unlocked at max friendship] + [third persona unlocked in third sem under certain conditions]" and a "?" just means I have yet to confirm what the persona is. if the person isn't listed it just means I haven't chosen any of their personas yet 😭

Haru can obviously use any persona because she's the wild card/fool but she still has her 3 personas just like Joker does in canon. Akira and Goro also keep their third personas for story purposes.

I'm also not explaining why I chose any of them (though I have linked their SMT wiki page if they have one!) but if you do want to know, send me an ask! :D

i genuinely feel like goro is like “god i hate being a bird this sucks” until he realizes he can just openly be rude to people as much as he fucking wants. he’s then like. “wait this rules actually.” openly calls ppl cunts and sumire is like “GORO SENPAI (bc he’s still the senpai of the meta verse) YOU CANT JUST CALL PEOPLE THAT!!!” instead of watching a blond kid argue with a cat they have to see a girl yelling at a bird to not curse out people

sdjkfdshjf just Goro swooping down to steal someone's sandwich because he's hungry and Sumi chasing after him like "BAD CROW!!!! BAD!!!! GIVE THE SANDWICH BACK AND APOLOGISE RIGHT NOW!!!!" while Haru peacefully sits and eats her lunch (spoiler alert: Goro does NOT return the sandwich and enjoys it while sat on the top of a telegraph pole while Sumi shouts at him from the ground)

Haru would 100% enable Goro and his mischievous ways. Sumi has to be the voice of reason here. also I'm imagining Goro climbing onto Yusuke's head to get a slightly better vantage point and Sumi's like "Crow-senpai, you can fly!" and Goro flops dramatically and plays dead on Yusuke's head. Yusuke is unfazed. they've basically adopted a toddler with a knife for a face omg

HI UHM.... you've probs been getting a lot of p5 swap au stuff but it's got my braincogs turning so much and I was just wondering would kunikazu okumura get a sort of sojiro role??? because like assuming it doesn't go like in the og game where his empire gets insanely successful and here it's more like a humble themed burger joint and just imagining protag!haru and birdkechi coming back home everyday to a fresh homemade burger from an okumura being a better dad like what og haru describes him to be like before it all makes me feel so happy

there'd be a cool arc there too if he's the hierophant arcana bc he could still have the same ambition and maybe he'd be distant like soji bc he's focusing too much on his business again?

idk idk I think I am just throwing out ideas into the universe you don't have to take them !! this au is just probably gonna take up my brain space for the next week now y'all are doing an absolutely phenomenal job

this is such a good idea!!! but omg my mind went straight to all the fics where Joker is described as smelling of coffee and I was like ah....... Haru smells like burger grease and love <3 she spends all her time sneaking fries to birdkechi OMG IMAGINE HARU MAKING A TINY CROW-SIZED BURGER FOR HIM!!!!

but: crow yelling aside: we've kept Sojiro in his role as caretaker/hierophant in the AU just because 1. easier on my brain 2. Haru's been sent to Tokyo after kicking a man in the nuts because he was being creepy 3. yes.

Wakaba is also alive in the AU so Futaba lives with her mother, while Akira works a part-time job at Leblanc (Akira now being the one with rich parents!! his parents own a modelling agency - this is v. relevant to the plot (not sarcasm) - and he's engaged to Mika) so Sojiro's still like a grumpy old dad to his kid(s)

maybe Haru's dad now owns a little burger joint out in the country? and he's a family man instead of an annoying CEO. omg I'm still thinking about a tiny crow-sized burger ;;;;;

Hiii I have a question about your cool au, do the velvey room outfits have significance to the plot?

yes! sort of! their outfits (and rooms) represent how they see the world, so Haru's got her nice groundskeeper outfit and the Shuake duo have......... whatever's going on over there......... so while it doesn't like directly impact the plot, it does play into their motivations!!

Does the protag Haru AU have a proper name?

I have a draft tentatively titled "Lucky Remix" (because her Thief nickname is Lucky and it's a NG+ AU) but not an official one!!! I'll ask Jazzy about it because I can't just say "protag!Haru AU" forever
