"But do you know what it means to be a half-breed, a half-caste, in a world ruled by whites? If you're a male, you're a coolie, and if you're a female, you're, well . . . The white half of me cried for the courtesy and protection that women like you get. The only way I could free myself was by becoming white. And it was almost in my hands, when you, you and your Kappa Society, stopped me."

'Thirteen Women' – Irene Dunne vs. Myrna Loy on Criterion Channel
Thirteen Women (1932) is a “Ten Little Indians”-style thriller set in a circle of sorority sisters whose planned reunion is marred with premonitions of death, murder, and suicide sent by a swami (C. Henry Gordon) whose astrological readings are all the rage in their society. Irene Dunne is Laura Stanhope, the good girl center of the sorority society, and Myrna Loy is Ursula Georgi, the exotic…

GILLIAN JACOBS as MARY JAYNE GOLD in TRANSATLANTIC (2023-) | period set in 1940 | costume design by JUSTINE SEYMOUR
“While I was doing my research, I was looking for fashion designers of the time, but really where people were getting their inspiration was from the golden age of cinema in Hollywood. Also, Gillian Jacobs had really enjoyed the work of an actress called Irene Dunn, so she was one of my inspirational people to watch and just see how she wore her clothes, then try to emulate it for Mary Jayne. I wanted to introduce her personality as not only cheeky but happy to go to any means to get what she felt was right. She was a moral woman for the greater good, and I really wanted her to shine.”

Irene Dunne and Myrna Loy in Thirteen Women (George Archainbaud, 1932)
Cast: Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Ricardo Cortez, Jill Esmond, Mary Duncan, Kay Johnson, Florence Eldridge, C. Henry Gordon, Peg Entwistle, Harriet Hagman, Edward Pawley, Blanche Friderici, Wally Albright. Screenplay: Bartlett Cormack, Samuel Ornitz, based on a novel by Tiffany Thayer. Cinematography: Leo Tover. Art direction: Carroll Clark. Film editing: Charles L. Kimball. Music: Max Steiner.
Myrna Loy was born Myrna Williams in Helena, Montana, but you wouldn't know it from the way Hollywood often cast her at the start of her career in the '20s and '30s. Her role in Thirteen Women is probably the purest example of her work as the stereotypical sinister Eurasian. She plays Ursula Georgi, whom the cop played by Ricardo Cortez scorns as "Half-breed type. Half Hindu, half Javanese, I don't know." (Actually, Cortez himself knew something about crossing ethnic lines: He was born Jacob Krantz in New York, but Hollywood changed his name to capitalize on the vogue for Latin lovers like Rudolph Valentino and Ramon Novarro, and later claimed first that he was French and later that he was born in Vienna.) Ursula seeks revenge on the women who belonged to a sorority at a girls' college and blackballed her when she sought admission. She seeks out a phony seer known as Swami Yogadachi (C. Henry Gordon), whose horoscope readings the girls sought out, and hypnotizes him into sending them poison-pen readings that predict dire events. Two of the girls, the sisters June (Mary Duncan) and May Raskob (Harriet Hagman), have become trapeze artists, and June is so unnerved by the fake reading that she lets May fall to her death during a stunt and goes mad as a consequence. As others fall prey to Ursula's schemes, some of the survivors gather at the home of Laura Stanhope (Irene Dunne), who thinks that their hysteria over the deaths is absurd. Laura is the single mother of a son, Bobby (Wally Albright), who is one of those cloyingly cute movie children -- he calls her "Mumsy." But even Laura's calm vanishes when Ursula makes Bobby her next target. In addition to being stupidly racist, the movie is sheer hokum, a cockamamie blend of revenge thriller and police procedural, and it was not much of a success at the box office, even after RKO cut 14 minutes from it after test screenings -- one of the reasons why we learn the fates of only 10 of the 13 women. One of the performances cut to only four minutes was that of Peg Entwistle, who played Hazel, the one who kills her husband and goes to prison. Entwistle was reportedly so despondent about her movie career that she climbed to the top of one of the letters on the Hollywood sign (reports vary on whether it was the H or the D) and jumped to her death. As for Loy, this was her last outing as a Eurasian vamp: The Thin Man (W.S. Van Dyke, 1934) changed her screen image to that of the witty and soignée wife, most often of William Powell.

Who is your favorite actress of all time?
This is such an impossible question for me to answer because I end up loving basically every actress who has a few rolls I enjoy and I'm terrible at deciding on favorites in general. Lets put it this way, if I've posted them here, I love them.
I did recently try to narrow down my top 20 but I had to leave out so many that I truly love so I'm not really satisfied with it but here is that list, just keep in mind there are so many others I like just about as much!
Jean Arthur, Joan Blondell, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Irene Dunne, Janet Gaynor, Alice Faye, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Myrna Loy, Ida Lupino, Jeanette MacDonald, Mary Pickford, Eleanor Powell, Ginger Rogers, Rosalind Russell, Sylvia Sidney, Norma Shearer And a few others that I considered for my top 20 - Joan Bennett, Greta Garbo, Greer Garson, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Carole Lombard, Merle Oberon, Luise Rainer, Ann Sheridan, Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young
So basically my top 30? But I still left out so many! so hmm....

@sorogue sent in ♫ for music recs based on our muses !!
jaymes young  --  i’ll be good  :  based on mysti after Irene’s death, when she was at her most unhinged and she stabbed poor Anna.  that, and when Myst tried to kill Charles and Anna came hunting her down saying “not my mother” . . very emotional ;-;
brooks  &   dunn  --  my maria  :  THIS is one of those key songs they’ve listened to when mysti was raising anna, and even though her name is marie not maria, whenever mysti would sing it, she’d never emphasize the ‘a’ at the end of maria, and always wrap her arm around anna’s shoulders, or do another gesture of affection.
lorn  --  acid rain  : when things turn vile.  myst  &  anna are no longer on the same page, and they couldn’t be further apart.  it’s the type of fight where anna puts her through the wall and mysti has no issues with shoving a replica of wolverine’s claws through anna  --  because at the end of the day, mysti knows anna  &  she knows shes a powerhouse. and if she kills anna, it’s because anna let her.  that, or anna just lost her tough side.

Thirteen Women (1932)
Thirteen women, who were sorority sisters at the all-girl's college St. Alban's, all write to a clairvoyant "swami" who by mail sends each a horoscope foreseeing swift doom. However, the clairvoyant is under the sway of Ursula Georgi, a half-Javanese Eurasian woman who was snubbed at school by the other women owing to her mixed-race heritage, behavior which eventually forced her to leave school. She now seeks revenge by manipulating the women into killing themselves or each other. She also goads the clairvoyant into killing himself by falling into the path of a subway train.
The victims are set up and killed off one by one until Laura Stanhope, living in Beverly Hills, is one of the few still alive. With the help of Laura's chauffeur and lover, Ursula tries to kill Laura's young son, Bobby, with both tainted candy and an explosive rubber ball, but is thwarted. Ursula follows Laura and Bobby as they flee Beverly Hills by train, unaware that police sergeant Barry Clive is escorting them. After confronting Laura, and apparently hypnotizing her into falling asleep, Ursula enters Bobby's room and is caught by Clive. She then flees to the back of the train and jumps to her own death.
