Propaganda
Anna Sten (The Girl with the Hatbox, Wedding Night, Nana)— The most beautiful actress of USSR that sadly didn't manage to became a bigger star in Hollywood. And not only that she was beautiful (online photos are not doing her a justice) but she was also an excellent comedian.
Leonor Maia (The Tyrannical Father)— She didn't do a lot of movies but in The Tyrannical Father she is so pretty and charming that there's a guy who's obsessed with her to such a degree he is still a meme 80 years later. Her character's name is Tatão and the guy would stare at her whenever she was there and say her name to the tune of everything. A clock ticking: ta-tão, ta-tão, ta-tão. And to this day one of the lines people know the best from that very quotable movie is "ta-tão". She inspired crushes and horniness of legendary levels.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Garbo's Influence in Hollywood, 1930s
Tumblr media
"When anthropologists of the future lean their beards over cinema's archives, they will find a disconcerting phenomena: they will notice that all female citizens of Hollywood who in the beginning of the XX the century all had different body types from 1931-32 onward suddenly began to look the same. The main characteristics they shared were a more or less combed blondish hair, medium in length and curled inward; fine eyebrows lifted high up to the sky and incredibly long eyelashes.
Other traces in common were a sulking lower lip, and a thinness that might lead one to believe that all the actresses of those days suffered from some unpleasant disorder of the digestive tract. Of course, such a deduction would be false. What really happened can be seen on the pictures (bellow.) The upper row shows them in their golden days of pre-Nordic innocence. But then came Garbo. And the metamorphoses that subsequently took place can be seen on the lower row."
Scanned and quoted from Bronwen Meredith's "Vogue Body and Beauty Book" 1977.

Brief thoughts on Nana (1934)
Tumblr media
I watched Nana last night, a last gasp of pre-code filmmaking starring Anna Sten.
A few months ago I watched We Live Again, another movie with the ill-fated Sten. She was a Ukranian actress brought to Hollywood by Sam Goldwyn to be the next Dietrich or Garbo. She failed to click with audiences and after three flops was let go from her contract.
Sten is often touted as a bad actress and yet she was popular in Russian and German films during the late silent period and early sound era. Also, having seen We lLve Again and Nana, I can safely say she was in no way catastrophically bad. Actually, in Nana, her comedic scenes are quite charming. I think some of the awkward moments in her performance are the result of having had to learn English really quickly and her allegedly having a hard time mastering the language. But she's not unintelligible nor is she wooden.
I don't know. I think the poor woman's been given an unfair shake.
