Characters: Naofumi Iwatani x Kaede Honjou/Maple
Fandoms: Rising of the Shield Hero/Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari | Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt so I'll Max Out My Defence/Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu
Relationship: Familial/Romantic
Ok, I just started Bofuri and, hear me out;
This pair goes one of two ways. Either, Naofumi sees this girl with a shield and insane defence stats and decides to help train her, learning the devour technique along the way and subsequently buffing his own stats in the process. They help each other loads, and eventually Naofumi adopts her like he does Raphtalia, Filo and Melty (daughters and little sister respectively) and she becomes his precious little sister (she's there before Melty). Kaede is absolutely down for having a big brother!! The pair of them make for an untouchable duo!
OR;
The lovers road. Basically the same as above, but instead she gets a crush on him and tries not to let it affect her too much. Naofumi goes full detective mode when he realises something's off, but he's not exactly clued in on romantic relationships, and that shit goes RIGHT over his head. Still, eventually he realises, and he starts to question how she could like him of all people. But, with help from his family, he starts to see her in a new light too :D
I have thought about this WAY too much in the past three days!!!

"#oh... this IS the website for bottoms huh" is so funny to me because every healer main I know has a personality that's like "yes I will take care of you but if you're a dumbass I'm breaking your neck myself". Completely without mercy or patience. I would fear for my life but my DEF is so high they do scratch damage to me at best. Maybe this is a new development, though, I'm pretty new to RPGs
Both of these are bottom behaviours, IMO. Like the two faces of a tsundere dating sim character.
Also, let me answer your question about the age of this phenomenon with an anime recommendation and wikipedia quote.
Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. (Japanese: 痛いのは嫌なので防御力に極振りしたいと思います。, Hepburn: Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu., "I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'd Like to Maximize My Defensive Power.) is a Japanese light novel series written by Yuumikan and illustrated by Koin.
There's an anime of this (I have not read the novels) and it's hilarious and about this exact phenomenon, which has been occuring since the dawn of games with defensive stats. A trope older than DnD. Integral, foundational even, to the essence of the roleplaying game.

Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense, Vol. 5
By Yuumikan and KOIN. Released in Japan as “Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu” by Kadokawa Books. Released in North America by Yen On. Translated by Andrew Cunningham.
This is the fist volume to take place post-anime (while a 2nd season was immediately announced, there has been no word about it ever since), and as such I imagine it has a few folks reading the series for the first time to try to see what happens next. That said… does Bofuri have an ongoing plot? We’re still entirely inside the game, with the most important real-life event in this volume being Kaede getting the flu. The plot of the books is basically “watch everyone slowly move to new levels and see what they do”. This volume has a weather-based level, with lots of clouds, lightning, and the like. If there is an ongoing plot that might affect future volumes, it’s Sally’s. She’s always taken the lead in gaming with Maple,. and has now found a game that Maple is not only intuitively better at but a LOT better at. Sally doesn’t want to play like Maple does… but she wants to be cool for Maple.
While this is not a “short story” volume per se, the book feels more scattered than usual, mostly as we’re having various groups team up with each other. Having faced off against Mii and Pain’s groups in the last event, there’s no similar guild war this time around. So Maple can team up with Mii for one day, getting to see more of her “real” self when she’s not putting up a front. She can also team up with Pain, who discovers, as he knew, that Maple can be a terrifying monstrosity, but also (as he didn’t know) that she can also be amazingly dense in equal measure. However, she *is* learning slowly how to game the “normal” way as well, and how to use new skills to bet suit her playset. Which is good, as the GMs are not making things any easier for her.
For those who go to Bofuri for the humor, there are definitely fun examples. Kasumi, the straight man samurai of the group for the most part, turns out to have a weakness for antiques, and on this level that mostly consists of getting quests by buying things at shops, she ends up spending FAR too much money. As for Maple, her defense – or more accurately her lack of everything other than defense – means that she’;s advancing far slower than anyone else in Maple Tree, and when she recovers from her flu she finds they all fought a boss without her. They’re pretty sure she can solo it, so she goes to do so… only to accidentally fight the LAST boss. Which she does of course beat, but it’s easily the most difficult fight we’ve seen her have since the first book, and it’s fun watching her throw everything at the enemy and seeing it not work.
Bofuri is fun and relaxing, and while it may not appeal to fans of the anime’s quicker comedic style, it’s a good read in and of itself. And good luck trying to show off for your girlfriend, Sally. At least there’s still Frederica if you can’t keep up.

I have been watching Bofuri - I Don't Wanna Get Hurt, So I'll Max Out My Defense before bed for the last few nights, as kind of a palette cleaner for the day and something I'm really appreciating is that we are given this fun slow burn of a world where people just play a game to enjoy it, and not hard rush to max level end game content.
In the beginning of episode 6 we learn that Maple and Sally are around level 30, and the highest level guy in the game is 60 (which is or isn't the level cap, it's unclear). In the 6 episodes I have seen Maple and Sally's strength in combat comes from a eclectic array of skills gained through gameplay and non-standard thinking, and are comedically represented as being over powered. More than that though we are given to understand that there is only a certain amount of time they can play. We're told that in game events last for maybe 2 to 3 hours, of which we have seen several events at this point and despite all of the things they have acquired, it has nothing to do with being over powered. Just really being in the moment and having fun and feeling cool doing it.
The world of their MMO is just a really fun, polite place. It's been a good energy to go to sleep after.
Also Maple used her event currency to give her pet turtle Syrup the ability to become gigantic and then the ability to fly, instead of any potentially busted abilities she could have gained and as someone who stopped playing Burning Crusade at it's launch to grind out a Talbuk (space elk) mount I get it 1000%.

Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu - Episode 1: Defense and First Battle
Do They Get Eaten? - Yes. First, various low-level enemies attempt to eat Maple but are unsuccessful. Then, a Poison Dragon lunges at Maple with it’s mouth open; it is unclear if it is attempting to eat her or not. Finally, Maple completely consumes the Poison Dragon.
