Daily Wrap Up September 12, 2022
I almost feel like I don’t need to post anything other than this map:
Tumblr media
(source) (Image ID: A map of Ukraine showing the territory they’ve reclaimed since the Russian invasion in blue and the territory still occupied in red. Ukraine has taken back roughly half or what has been invaded. End ID.)
Under the cut:
“The military command of the Russian federation has suspended the sending of new, already formed units into the territory of Ukraine,” [Ukrainian] officials said on the general staff Facebook page.
Since the beginning of September, Ukrainian forces have taken back 2,400 square miles of Russian-held territory
Russia has largely ceded its gains near Kharkiv and many of the withdrawing Russian soldiers have exited Ukraine, moving over the border back into Russia, a senior U.S. military official said on Monday
Ukrainians capture Russian ammo, weapons, vehicles in Kharkiv Oblast
“The military command of the Russian federation has stopped sending new units into Ukraine following a dramatic Ukrainian counter-offensive that has reshaped the war and left Moscow reeling, the general staff of the armed forces of Ukraine said Monday.
“The military command of the Russian federation has suspended the sending of new, already formed units into the territory of Ukraine,” officials said on the general staff Facebook page.
“The current situation in the theatre of operations and distrust of the higher command forced a large number of volunteers to categorically refuse the prospect of service in combat conditions,” the statement continued. “The situation is affected by information about the actual number of dead, while losses from private military companies and those mobilised from temporarily occupied territories are not taken into account. The situation worsens due to the general attitude toward their own wounded. In particular, in Russian hospitals, diagnoses and the nature of combat injuries are deliberately simplified and no time is given for rehabilitation in order to quickly return servicemen to the combat zone.”
This information could not be corroborated. The Kremlin has yet to respond.”-via The Guardian

“Since the beginning of September, Ukrainian forces have taken back 2,400 square miles of Russian-held territory, Reuters reports.
“Since the beginning of September and up to today, our fighters have liberated more than 6,000 square km (2,400 sq. miles) of the territory of Ukraine in the south and in the east,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video. “The advances of our forces continue.””-via The Guardian

“Russia has largely ceded its gains near Kharkiv and many of the withdrawing Russian soldiers have exited Ukraine, moving over the border back into Russia, a senior U.S. military official said on Monday.
As it pulls back, the United States has seen anecdotal reports of Russian forces abandoning their equipment, "which could be indicative of Russia's disorganized command and control," the U.S. military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The remarks to Pentagon reporters followed a weekend of rapid gains for Ukrainian forces. Ukraine's general staff said its soldiers had recaptured more than 20 towns and villages in just the past day, as Ukrainian forces swept deeper into territory seized from fleeing Russian troops.
The U.S. military official was upbeat, but cautious, when describing the Ukrainian advances.
"It's clear they're fighting hard," the official said, citing progress in the south and east to reclaim territory.
Ukraine said it repelled attempted Russian advances in two important areas of the Donetsk region - the city of Bakhmut and Maiorsk, near the coal-producing town of Horlivka, the general staff said in an evening update.
But the senior U.S. military official said Russia was still focusing its firepower on Bakhmut.
"We continue to see heavy use of artillery and airstrikes," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Vitaly Ganchev, the Russian-installed head of Moscow's occupation administration in what remained of Russian-held territory in the Kharkiv region, acknowledged that Ukrainian forces had broken through to the frontier.
The official did not say how many withdrawing Russian forces had left Ukrainian territory and exited to Russia but described a significant pullback.
"On the ground in the vicinity of Kharkiv we assess that Russian forces have largely ceded their gains to the Ukrainians and have withdrawn to the north and east. Many of these forces have moved over the border into Russia," the official said.”-via Reuters

“Ukraine’s surprise counteroffensive in Kharkiv Oblast forced Russian soldiers to beat a hasty retreat, abandoning ammunition and equipment to be captured by Ukrainian forces.
Since the beginning of the advance on Sept. 7, Ukraine has liberated about 3,000 square kilometers, or over 40 settlements, in Kharkiv Oblast, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
Ukraine recaptured the strategic city of Izium, which was used as one of Russia’s main logistics bases. Ukrainian forces also took Kupiansk, the railway hub supplying Russia's front lines in northeastern Ukraine. Multiple settlements on the border with Russia, including Kozacha Lopan and Volchansk, have also been returned under Ukrainian control.
This push weakened the Russian forces in the Donbas, helping the Ukrainian forces to retake the important towns of Bohorodychne and Sviatohirsk in Donetsk Oblast.
When the Russians fled, they left behind stockpiles of mines, grenades, portable rockets and multiple types of fighting vehicles.
"Under the pressure of Ukrainian warriors, the Russian occupiers are fleeing and leaving behind entire arsenals," Vladyslav Abdula, spokesman for the Kharkiv Region Department of the Security Service of Ukraine wrote on Facebook. "We know what to do with them and will definitely use them as intended — against the enemies."
Abdula posted pictures of what looked like stockpiles of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines sitting in a warehouse.
More footage of Ukrainian soldiers looking around a building packed with cases of ammunition, rockets and grenades appeared on Twitter. The Ukrainian soldiers joked, calling the windfall a “lend-lease,” the name of the U.S. program that simplifies military aid to Ukraine.
Liberated Kharkiv Oblast residents from Zaliznychne told the Washington Post that Russians dropped their weapons on the ground when they fled, with some jumping onto stolen bicycles, trying to pass for locals.
Vehicular losses were also great. Many pictures of Kharkiv Oblast showed abandoned Russian assets ranging from main battle tanks to engineering vehicles, self-propelled mortars and supply trucks
Analyst Jakub Janovsky estimated that Russia lost a total of 336 fighting vehicles in the country from Sept. 7-11. A full 102 vehicles were lost on Sept. 11 alone, most of them in Kharkiv Oblast.
WarSpotting’s online database says that in September, Ukrainians in Kharkiv Oblast captured 18 T-72 tanks (including T-72s, T-72Bs and T72B3s) and a dozen M-80 tanks (including M-80s, M-802BVs, and M-80BVMs).
According to the same database, dozens of infantry fighting vehicles, including MT-LBs and various models of BTRs and BMPs, were captured in Kharkiv in September.
Ukrainian forces also seized several self-propelled howitzers, including Msta and Akatsiya models, according to multiple sources.
Photos posted in open source online channels show that the Ukrainians also reportedly captured a mine clearing vehicle, an armored recovery vehicle, a R-149MA1 command and staff vehicle, and various Russian trucks used for fuel, transport and logistics.
Valentyn Ermolenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Operational Command East, which includes Kharkiv, told the Kyiv Independent that he could not confirm any numbers at this time.
According to investigative project Oryx, as of Sept. 7, Ukraine has been visually confirmed to have captured more than 1,500 vehicles and other pieces of equipment from the Russian army.
Oryx found that since the start of the conflict, Russia has lost 5,802 vehicles. This includes 1,073 tanks, 334 of which were captured and 51 were abandoned, since the beginning of the war. The Conflict Intelligence Team, an independent Russian monitor, says the Oryx database covers nearly 70% of the total equipment lost by both sides, as it includes only fully-verified losses.
However, despite these losses and Russia’s poor maintenance of its tank fleet, it likely has thousands more combat-worthy tanks, enough to potentially fight for years.”-via Kyiv Independent

Quote from Syniehubov: "Among the bodies exhumed today, 99% have signs of violent death.
Several bodies have their arms tied behind their backs; one person was buried with a noose around their neck. These people have clearly been tortured and executed. There are also children among those buried [at the mass burial site in Izium]."(..)
P.S. In these circumstances, the Russophiles, who are still cooperating with the Kremlin, look especially disgusting...They are complicit in the war crimes committed by the Kremlin...

Under the cut:
More than 20 suspected Russian “torture chambers” have been found in the northeast territory recently retaken from Russian forces, a top police official said
The bodies of more than 500 civilians have been discovered in the territory in northeast Ukraine that has recently been retaken from Russian forces, according to Ukrainian police
France has created a fund, initially worth €100 million ($98 million), for Ukraine to directly buy weapons and other materiel it needs in its war against invading Russia, President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday
Ukrainian troops have reported outages of their Starlink communication devices while fighting on the frontline, according to Ukrainian officials and soldiers
Russia has targeted Zaporizhzhia with explosive-packed “kamikaze drones” for the first time, as the death toll from a missile strike on an apartment building in the city rose to 11
“More than 20 suspected Russian “torture chambers” have been found in the northeast territory recently retaken from Russian forces, a top police official said.
“In almost all large cities and towns, where military units of the Russian army were based, they set up such places of detention of civilians and prisoners of war and tortured them,” said Serhii Bolvinov, head of the investigative department of the regional police, adding that one was in the town of Pisky-Radkivski.
The most common torture techniques were electric shocks and severe beatings with sticks and other objects, he said, adding that there were also cases of nails being pulled out and the use of gas masks to restrict breathing.
Bolvinov cited testimony from a 67-year-old man in Izium, who the Russians accused of assisting Ukrainian targeting.
According to Bolvinov:
This man was taken to the local police department and later had a black hood put over his head. One of his interrogators had put a gun to his head and demanded to know to whom he had given the coordinates of targets. When he denied doing so, they used a pipe or bat on his hands and broke his arm. The man had testified that later his captors had pushed metal spokes from a bicycle wheel under his skin, and beat him. His injuries included internal bleeding and he was now in a Kharkiv hospital, according to Bolvinov.
CNN has not been able to verify the regional police chief's account.
Bolvinov also said there were also criminal proceedings underway regarding allegations of rape.
"We understand that it is very difficult for victims to testify about such facts. However, there are proceedings that we have registered, there are appeals from women who were raped. We have information about the alleged facts of rapes in torture chambers," Bolvinov added.”-via CNN

“The bodies of more than 500 civilians have been discovered in the territory in northeast Ukraine that has recently been retaken from Russian forces, according to Ukrainian police.
Most of the remains — 447, according to Ukrainian forces — were found at what was described as a mass burial site in the town of Izium, which Ukrainian forces liberated from Russian occupation in early September. Russian troops had been using Izium as a launchpad for attacks southward into the Donetsk region.
As Ukrainian forces liberated more land in the northeast, new burial sites are being discovered.
“We found the bodies of 534 civilians from the de-occupied territories," said Serhii Bolvinov, the head of the investigative department of the regional police,
They included 226 women and 19 children, Bolvinov added.”-via CNN

“France has created a fund, initially worth €100 million ($98 million), for Ukraine to directly buy weapons and other materiel it needs in its war against invading Russia, President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday.
"We are setting up this special, dedicated fund initially with €100 million to allow the acquisition of equipment that we have already delivered and that we will continue to do so in terms of weapons, meaning defensive ones," Macron said after a summit in Prague.
He added that discussions were being held, particularly with Denmark, to deliver more highly accurate CAESAR truck-mounted cannons to Ukraine, on top of the 18 France has already given.
"France has been giving military support to Ukraine from the first day, with anti-tank and individual anti-aircraft systems," Macron said.
The new fund, he said, "will allow... to also work with France's defence industry base" and "demonstrates our will to act as Europeans and to align ourselves with this collective effort" helping Ukraine.
The fund would significantly boost the military support France is showing Ukraine, from the €233 million committed so far, which is a fraction of what some other allies have allocated.
The United States is the biggest military supplier to Ukraine, to the tune of the equivalent of 25 billion euros, while Britain has given some €4 billion worth of weapons and gear, and Poland €1.8 billion worth.
Publicly-known shipments that France has so far made include anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, armoured personnel carriers, fuel, infantry gear and towed artillery cannons -- as well as the 18 prized CAESARs.
The discussions with Denmark would be to see about diverting some CAESAR units Copenhagen had ordered from France.”-via France24

“Ukrainian troops have reported outages of their Starlink communication devices while fighting on the frontline, according to Ukrainian officials and soldiers.
Thousands of terminals by Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband service have been delivered to Ukraine to help troops operate drones, receive vital intelligence updates and communicate with each other.
The disruptions have hindered efforts to liberate territory from Russian forces, with some of the outages resulting in a “catastrophic” loss of communication in recent weeks, the Financial Times cited one senior Ukrainian government official as saying.
Many of the outages were reported as troops breached the frontline into Russian-controlled territory and some during pitched battles, according to the official.
They were acute in the south around the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, but also took place along the frontline in eastern Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk, the Ukrainian official said.
Another Ukrainian official said the connection failures were widespread and prompted panicked calls from soldiers to helplines.
The FT reports that the disruptions underline Starlink’s outsized role in Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion, and comes after Musk angered Kyiv when he asked Twitter users to weigh in on his ideas to end Russia’s war.”-via The Guardian

“Russia has targeted Zaporizhzhia with explosive-packed “kamikaze drones” for the first time, as the death toll from a missile strike on an apartment building in the city rose to 11.
The regional governor, Oleksandr Starukh, said Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones damaged two infrastructure facilities in the city. He said other missiles also struck the city, injuring one person.
With its army losing ground to Ukraine’s counteroffensive, Moscow has started to deploy drones to attack Ukrainian targets. According to Ukrainian military officials, “kamikaze drones” are cheaper and less sophisticated than missiles but have proved effective at causing damage to targets on the ground. The Shahed-136 drones are able to remain airborne for several hours and circle over potential targets before being flown into enemy troops, armour or buildings and exploding on impact.
On Monday, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani denied supplying the drones to Russia, calling the claims “baseless”. However, the Ukrainian military said its forces had shot down more than 20 drones over the last 24 hours and that most were Iranian-made.”-via The Guardian

Day 206. Yesterday, the whole world was again shocked by the inhumanity of the russian army.  A mass grave site was found in the recently liberated #Izium (Ukraine). 440 graves were revealed there. There are more graves in the city, as a police report. All these people died during the 6-month-occupation by russia. Victims from the graves had signs of torture and their hands tied behind their backs. The hand and 🇺🇦 bracelet now became a symbol of the russian occupation of #Izium . #iziummassacre
