SO many thoughts. It’s the foundational ship for this fandom ofc.

Firstly, let me establish that I am a Germany-is-HRE truther. Everyone knows that EXCEPT Lutz himself but they all just kind of agree to not mention it. So Feli KNOWS that the boy he love(s/d) is RIGHT. THERE. But he can’t say anything to suggest they’re the same person because to Lutz, that’s a different nation who died, and Feli doesn’t want to confuse or upset him. But Lutz does love him, and not just because of any lingering memories from before!!! He fell in love with Feli completely on his own, and he would fall in love with him over and over again. AUGH. Once they both get their heads out of their asses and express their feelings for each other, FELI is actually the one who takes it slow because he’s afraid of making Lutz feel like he’s just a stand-in for HRE. Feli doesn’t want to jump right to “established relationship” because even though that’s how it kind of feels for him, that’s not how it feels for Lutz. So they take it slow <3 first dates, flowers, first kisses… augh.

Anyways enough with the amnesia agony. THE AGE GAP!!!! Lutz, in his experience, is only about 150 years old. But Feli has been around for over 1300 years. Cradle robber smh. It just cracks me up. And Feli forgets sometimes that Ludwig doesn’t remember anything before the 1870s so he’ll offhandedly mention something that happened hundreds of years ago as if everyone knows it, and Lutz is just like ??? I have no fucking clue what you’re talking about. So even though Lutz often thinks that he’s the more “mature” one, Feli will make some joke about Byzantine Empire being bad in bed and Lutz suddenly feels very, very young. Feli often has to explain in-jokes between all the older nations to him or provide an INSANE amount of context for a simple passing comment. Lana del ray wants what they have.

Ok enough background. Let’s get to the headcanons

Their first dates were very simple <3 Museums, restaurants, art galleries, etc. Feli loves taking Lutz to art galleries and explaining the artworks and their historical backgrounds in vivid detail, and Lutz could listen to Feli talk passionately about art and architecture all day <333 Really I think he just likes the sound of his voice, his musical accent and animated speech. Every once in a rare while Feli will sing, maybe just a couple lines to a song, and Lutz fucking MELTS. They stopped going to restaurants after their first few dates after Lutz was like. Actually. Your cooking is way better and I like helping you in the kitchen. So let’s just do that instead. <3 Realistically a lot of their dates are things they were doing before they were a couple, just in a different light.

Feli taught Lutz how to relax <3 lounging in bed all day, curling up on the sofa with a cup of cocoa and a good book, just enjoying life without worrying about deadlines and routines. Although I don’t think Lutz will ever be able to sleep in the same way Feli can, they absolutely spend Saturday mornings in bed until midday, just tangled up in each other with not a care in the world <3

Conversely, Lutz taught Feli the joys of physical activity besides the walk from the sofa to the fridge lol. Hikes, bike rides, anything that gets them outside and moving. Feli has never been super outdoorsy or active, but breathing in crisp Alpine air and being surrounded by trees older than him is incredible. And he’s enjoying it with the man he loves <3

Meals! Entrées are Italian, desserts are German. Feli never acquired a taste for German food but goddamn that man can make a pie like nobody else. Feli is a lot more passionate about cooking (and Lutz can’t be trusted in front of a stove) but Lutz is happy to help chop vegetables or stir a pot of sauce. The one time they switched roles, Feli was stuck eating some sad, burnt to all hell potato and beef thing, and Lutz learned that he really hates tiramisu. This is not a condemnation of German food, they have some bangers, Lutz is just a bad cook lol.

They do indeed fight and argue like every other couple. Feli tends to be messy, leaving laundry all over the place and not cleaning up his dishes, whereas Lutz is neurotic about cleanliness and goes INSANE trying to convince Feli to just. Put his laundry in the fucking basket. Feli gets mad because sometimes Lutz will treat him like he’s incompetent or just outright stupid. Like there’s a reason he’s still alive and thriving after all this time. Get fucked mate. Ultimately their fights often come down to Feli being inconsiderate and Lutz being condescending.

They’re both fucking obsessed with how the other looks. Lutz is all strength and muscle and Feli wants to bite down on his forearms like a chew toy, and Lutz will never get enough of how Feli’s little waist feels in his hands or having those long legs wrapped around his hips. Also Ludwig is often like:

American drinkers will consume an estimated 360 million glasses of champagne on New Year’s Eve. It is, of course, the number one night of the year for popping bottles of bubbly. But let’s forget about quantity for a moment and focus instead on quality. Because what’s the point of celebrating with something mediocre? Especially when there are so many fantastic examples of reasonably priced effervescent wines sitting on shelves at this very moment.

Today we’re going to highlight what some experts consider to be the very best of them all. Those experts happen to be the judges at the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. Now entering its 12th annual iteration, it is the premiere international competition of its kind, comprising a cadre of high profile sparkling wine specialists from across the globe. After two weeks of judging earlier in the year, the CSWWC released its 2023 results to the world in September.

The formidable title of “Supreme World Champion” went to a 2008 vintage of Millésime Rare Champagne from producer Piper-Heidsieck. And this wasn’t just any bottling, but a magnum format, specifically. As any seasoned sommelier will explain to you, the 1.5 liter bottle offers superior aging conditions compared to that of a standard 750ml. That’s because the overall size of the vessel is larger, but the neck is not. Therefore, less air is contained inside, and aeration and oxidation are both minimized.

Now that we’ve gotten some general bottle basics out of the way, let’s talk about what makes this specific expression so worthy of praise. Millésime is always a vibrant juice, notably effervescent with a pronounced crispness. It typically noses with pear and marzipan. But the sensational growing season of 2008 enabled a concentrated dose of spring in the glass: fresh floral blooms, orange blossom and a tangy citrus thread which holds firm across the palate.

There’s also a very subtle saline quality that emerges near the end of each sip. It’s enough to keep you reaching back for more, and also begs you to pair it with something from the sea; think oysters or Dover sole. The degree of complexity and structure exemplified here is quite a value at $209 for a bottle. Remember, this is twice the amount of liquid you’re getting in the outsized glass.

But if you’re less concerned with medals and more interested in time-tested icons, my professional recommendation is to grab a bottle of Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Brut 2013 for your New Year’s Eve celebration. It's an especially poignant vintage for the legacy brand, boasting ample orchard fruit in the nose and nods to dried vanilla on the tongue. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful inside and out, brandishing instantly recognizable white anemone bottle art, originally designed by Émile Gallé back in 1902.

It doesn’t come cheap, at $229 for a 750ml bottle. But it’s guaranteed to inspire some priceless memories as we say goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024. Regardless of what ends up in your glass, may you and yours enjoy a very Happy New Year!

Just to clarify, The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky won The World's Best Scotch Whisky award just in Singapore 2023 🇸🇬 The award was presented by the Tasting Alliance, who are well-known by SH and don't require more lengthy introductions.

In 2019, Tasting Alliance created the SWSC, which stands for the Singapore World Spirits Competition. This organisation is responsible for organising the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the New York World Wine And Spirits Competition, both of which are very well-known by SH who was awarded gold medals in this competitions. The SWSC’s methodology is the same as the San Francisco competition, but it also focuses on Asian spirits producers, bottlers, and products that are available to Asian consumers.

The competition has gained popularity among consumers in the Asia-Pacific region, despite accepting entries from all over the world, including Scotch single malt, American Bourbon, Chinese baijiu, and Korean soju. In 2023, the competition received an entry for rakija, a type of fruit brandy commonly made in Croatia and other Balkan countries.

Tomatin 36-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been awarded the 'Best in Show' title in the whisky category at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC). The whisky is part of the distillery's Prestige Collection, which positions it among the finest whiskies in the world, and its master distiller is Graham Munson.

New York World Wine And Spirits Competition 2023

In 2023, the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition voted the single malt from Islay Ardbeg 25 Years Old as the best scotch. This award is part of the Tasting Alliance group of wine and spirit competitions, which includes the San Francisco World Spirits and the Singapore World Spirits Competitions.

How do SH’s fans decide what whisky to buy when faced with a plethora of options, especially if they don't drink or know very little about spirits? Some may choose to stick with the only brand they know and have been buying but not drinking for the last three years, while others may opt for the most aesthetically pleasing bottle, hoping to impress the person they will give it to. 🤷‍♀️

Mads babysat his neighbor’s little girl- she was a nurse and a single mom so this toddler just hung out with The Great Kingdom of Denmark every day. Gave him baby fever lol </3

Lu actually did make a sourdough starter and took up baking as a hobby. It kept his hands busy and his stomach full so he didn’t have a total break from reality.

Ti and Ber holed up together at a cottage near their border and played house <3 Home cooked meals every night, doing chores together, grocery shopping- almost like a normal human couple.

Feliks was/is a Twitch streamer that made BANK. He’s known for critiquing historical inaccuracies in video games and wearing Nekomimi.

VI’s boss, instead of making him work from home, let him chill for the first time in 1000 years. He slept almost the entire time, only getting up to use the bathroom, shower, and eat. Liet’s year of rest and relaxation lol

Ivan retreated to his dacha and enjoyed the simple life for a while. He doesn’t get to spend a lot of time there so he was able to do a lot of repairs and maintenance the place has needed.

The Singapore World Spirits Competition has only been in existence since 2019. But in that short sum of time, it has grown into one of the most important annual judgings in all of Asia. A big reason why it attained so much stature so rapidly is because it’s run by the Tasting Alliance. These are the same folks responsible for the San Francisco World Spirits Competition—which is regarded by many in the industry as the gold standard of booze contests.

This year saw thousands of entries roll in across all major categories of adult beverage. Several weeks ago we were here talking about the best bourbon winner. It was an eyebrow-raiser, to say the least; a brand that didn’t enjoy widespread recognition, even amongst ardent aficionados of American whiskey. That all changed after the announcement of the accolade, underscoring just how valuable these contests can be for brands.

Today we’re taking a look at the top-ranked scotch from the Singapore Worlds Spirits Competition. And it’s bound to generate its own fair share of rancor. The honor belongs to The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky.

Why is this a controversial pick? Well, most notably it’s a blend. That means it includes a combination of malt and grain whiskies plucked from across the Scottish landscape. The conventional wisdom of the day holds that blended scotches are somehow inferior to their single malt counterparts.

If you don’t know the difference between the two categories, don’t kick yourself. It’s relativelystraightforward: single malt is whisky distilled from malted barley—and only malted barley—in a pot still at a single distillery. Blends, by contrast, can combine any number of single malts, often times collected from dozens of distilleries, and then married against a lion’s share of grain whisky.

And there lies the rub, in that last bit. Grain whiskies can come from a number of different ingredients—chiefly corn (but sometimes wheat and rye and other cereals). They are distilled in large column stills, which results in a markedly lighter flavor profile. Some deride this liquid as merely scotch-flavored vodka. Being that this component often makes up the majority of the booze in any blend, it’s a short jump to blended scotch being lesser then.

But here’s a not-so-little secret: blends can be beautiful. They are often times more accessible and “easy-drinking.” Hence why they are far and away the most popular style of scotch on the planet. And when rendered properly, they can serve up a kaleidoscopic array of tastes which is difficult to achieve when you’re only working with malt sourced from a single distillery.

And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. It holds a bouquet reminiscent of the sweet shop: marzipan, candied orange peel and ginger. Upon the palate is a smattering of heather, ripened stone fruit, and dried apricot. It fades after the sip in a subdued sweetness—butterscotch and nutmeg are both apparent. Overall, the 92-proof scotch leaves you with little resistance but plenty to contemplate.

For anyone who remains dismissive of the blended style, this bottle stands as a testament to the follies of your preconceived notions. Although it does so at a relatively hefty price: it typically retails at around $125 per 750ml.

That revelation will inevitably be met with a degree of blowback from a certain subset of drinks enthusiasts. But it’s not really a discussion worth engaging in, because either a whisky is good or it isn’t.
